[Industrial application fields]
The present invention relates to nematic liquid crystal mixtures useful for active matrix liquid crystal displays (AMD) operating with a transmission minimum of the Goth-Tally curve of second order or higher, having an optical birefringence Δn of 0.08 to 0.20.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Active matrix displays (AMD) are highly preferred for displays that are of interest as commercial products because of their high information capacity. Such AMD is used in TVs (eg projection systems) and also in laptops, cars and airplanes, for example.
[0003]
The AMD has a non-linear electrical switching element included in each image element. As a non-linear drive element, a thin film transistor (TFT) is [U. Okbo et al., 1982, SID 82 digest pages 40-41) or diodes (eg, metal-insulator-metal, MIM) [K. Niwa et al., 1984, SID84 digest, pages 304-307) can also be used. If a good viewing angle characteristic can be obtained, these non-linear driving elements allow to use an electro-optic effect having a somewhat flat electro-optic characteristic. Twist angle 90 0 TN type LC cell (M. shut (Schadt) -W. Fuherufuritchi (Helfrich), pp. 1971 APPL.Phys.Lett.18,127) can also be used. In order to obtain good contrast over a wide range of viewing angles, operation with a transmission minimum of the first order [L. Paul, R.W. Eidensink and F.M. Del Pino and G.M. German Patent 30 22 818, U.S. Pat. No. 4,398,803, L., Weber et al. Paul, G. Weber, R.W. IDENSYNC, G. Bauer and W.W. Fehrenbach 1981 APPL. PHYS. LETT 38, 497, Weber G. Finkenzeller U. Geelhaar T .; Plach H., et al. J. et al. Rieger B. And Paul L. 1988, International Symposium on Liquid Crystals, Freiburg Liq. Crys. To be announced). These AMDs are very suitable for TV and are therefore of great market interest. For such applications, the physical properties of liquid crystals are much more important than for passive TN displays. Some properties that are critical to the performance of AMD are the resistance and stability of liquid crystals [Togashi S. Sekiguchi K, Tanabe H. et al. , Yamamoto E. et al. Sorimachi K. et al. Kajima E. Watanabe H .; Shimizu H.I. Proc. Eurodisplay 84 September 1984 A210-288 Controlled matrix LCD with double diode ring 144p or lower, Paris, M. et al. Stromer Proc. Eurodisplay 1984 Design of thin film transistors for matrix addressing of television liquid crystal displays, page 145 and below, Paris]. A frequently encountered problem is the unfavorable effect of UV-irradiation on the resistivity, and thus the unfavorable effect on the overall performance of the liquid crystal matrix in the display.
[0004]
In AMD, nonlinear switching elements are addressed in a multiplex manner. As a result, the device charges the pixel electrode within the limit time that the pixel electrode is active. Then it is inactive until it is addressed again in the next cycle. Thus, a change in voltage on an activated (charged) pixel is undesirable, but is a very critical property of such a display. Pixel discharge is determined by two factors. These are the capacitance of the pixel including the liquid crystal, and the dielectric between the electrodes, that is, the specific resistance of the liquid crystal. The voltage decay characteristic time constant (RC time) at the pixel must be much larger than the time between two types of addressing cycles ( tadr. ). A parameter often used to describe the performance of AMD is the voltage holding ratio HR of the screen element:
[0005]
[Formula 1]
Since the voltage at the pixel decays exponentially, an increase in retention requires a liquid crystal material with exceptionally high specific resistance.
[0006]
There are important points regarding the specific resistance of the liquid crystal inside the display, for example, the curing conditions of the alignment layer and alignment material. This is not to say that the electrical properties of the liquid crystal used are not important. In particular, the specific resistance of the liquid crystal in the display determines the magnitude of the voltage drop at the pixel.
[0007]
Previous studies on low Δn materials have shown that the requirements for resistivity and UV stability and the temperature dependence of resistivity when used in TFTs cannot be met with materials containing cyano groups as end groups. Show. Non-cyano materials containing halogenated end groups have much higher specific resistance and UV stability and superior viscosity values than conventional cyano materials. In general, however, these non-cyano materials unfortunately have a strong tendency to form crystalline and / or smectic phases, especially at low temperatures. Therefore, the clearing point and dielectric anisotropy of non-cyano materials having halogenated end groups are much lower.
[0008]
Modern commercial mixtures must operate over a wide temperature range. Therefore, crystallization at low temperature or formation of a smectic phase must be excluded. Good solubility is the most important prerequisite for the feasibility of using liquid crystalline materials in the development of nematic mixtures. Compounds with high melting temperatures and a tendency to form smectic layers are not suitable for this reason.
[0009]
Extremely careful selection of the components and proper mixture design made it possible to find a low birefringence non-cyano mixture with a wide range of nematic temperature ranges for the first minimum utilization. [B. Rieger et al., 18th Freiburg Liquid Crystal Working Group Proceedings, Freiburg, 1989, 16 (1989)]. Non-cyano materials with high birefringence that are intrinsic to the blend concept of the present invention unfortunately often have higher melting and / or stronger smectogenic behavior than similar materials with lower melting points. Even more undesirable properties are exhibited.
[0010]

[0011]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
Although the broad general formula of WO 90/09240 covers the fluoroterphenyls of formula I, only one example of these compounds is not disclosed, and only a mixture containing fluorinated fluoro- and chloroterphenyls is disclosed. No example is disclosed.
[0012]
Current mixtures with birefringence suitable for operation in transmission higher than second order of Gooch-Tally curve are not suitable for active matrix use.
[0013]
There is still a need for liquid crystal compositions having high resistivity and other properties suitable for AMD use. The above chlorinated terphenyl no. 3 is known from JP 60-056932-A. As already reviewed, these compounds are recognized as meeting the strict specifications of the electronics industry, especially because of their low solubility in other liquid crystal materials, their high melting points, and their remarkable smectic properties. Absent. Accordingly, there is a need for improved high birefringence non-cyano liquid crystal compounds.
[0014]
It is an object of the present invention to provide a nematic liquid crystal mixture useful for an active matrix liquid crystal display that satisfies these requirements.
[0015]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
The chloroterphenyl of formula I was disclosed at the Pisa / Italy International Liquid Crystal Conference 1992.
[0016]
The present invention provides a nematic liquid crystal mixture having a birefringence Δn of 0.08 to 0.20, characterized in that the mixture is of formula I

The present invention includes: * Two parallel support plates that together with the frame form a cell of thickness d * Combined non-linear elements for switching the image element here on the support plate * In the cell It is also an object to provide a high-temperature and UV-stable matrix liquid crystal display that contains a nematic liquid crystal mixture that exists and has a positive dielectric anisotropy and birefringence Δn, the display being d · Δ n, and by appropriately selecting a liquid crystal composition that meets other needs having a very high non-resistance, it operates with a transmission minimum of the second order or higher of the Gooch-Tally curve, and is characterized by UV light (280 The ratio of retention HR 20 and HR 0 before exposure to UV light after exposure to −400 nm, 12 mW / cm 2 ) for 20 hours is greater than or equal to 98%.
[0023]
It has been found that such values of HR are possible even for mixtures with high birefringence by using laterally fluorinated non-cyano materials and / or ethyl-bonded non-cyano materials. Very high RC time values can be obtained with AMD. These mixtures also exhibit low viscosity and short switching times with reasonable threshold voltage values.
[0024]
The thickness of the AMD is preferably in the range of 3 to 10 μm. 3 to 7 μm is particularly preferable.

[0034]
Especially preferred are liquid crystal mixtures having one or more fluoro- or chloro-terphenyls of the formula I and containing less than 15%, preferably less than 10%, of the compounds of the formulas 1 to 5 of EP 04 39 089, Wherein R 1 and R 2 are selected from alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxy, alkenyloxy and alkanoyloxy.

[0036]
Mixtures according to the present invention are usually based on moderately polar components having the above central structure and other non-cyano components. However, of course, such mixtures can additionally contain known cyano liquid crystal components, for example, if extremely high HR values are not required for TN or STN use. Such a mixture can also contain a tolan component to adjust to a high Δn value. The resulting mixture is important to achieve a very wide nematic phase range including very low temperatures (outdoor use).
[0037]
The mixture is preferably based on moderately polar halogenated components and / or essentially free of cyano components.
[0038]
The novel compounds of formula I can be prepared analogously to the methods described in EP 0 439 089 A1, WO 90/09420, WO 90/15113 and WO 91/13850, the disclosures of which are incorporated herein by reference. Cited as a reference. In the components of formulas I to XII, R and R 1 are preferably straight-chain alkyl groups having 1 to 7 carbon atoms, or straight-chain methoxyalkyl (methoxymethyl, methoxyethyl, methoxypropyl, methoxy Butyl, methoxypentyl, methoxyhexyl, methoxyheptyl).
[0039]
The mixture according to the invention is produced in a conventional manner. In general, the desired amount of the component to be used in a small amount is dissolved in the component constituting the main component, particularly by raising the temperature.
If this temperature is chosen to be above the clearing point of the main component, the completeness of the dissolution method can be observed particularly easily.
[0040]
However, it is also possible to mix a solution in which these components are dissolved in an appropriate organic solvent such as acetone, chloroform or methanol, and to remove these solvents later. Care must be taken that the solvent does not introduce any contaminants or undesirable dopants.
[0041]
With suitable additives it is also possible to modify the liquid crystal phase according to the invention in such a way that it could be used for the AMD types disclosed so far.
[0042]
