BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an image display device that includes a display element having a plurality of pixels that can control light according to image information, enlarges an image displayed on the display element with a lens, and displays or observes the image.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Conventionally, an image display device using a CRT has been widely used as an image display device. However, in recent years, an image display device using a spatial light modulation element such as a liquid crystal display element is generally used as a display element. It has become. In an image display device using a spatial light modulation element (for example, a liquid crystal display element) as a display element, the definition of an image to be displayed is basically determined by the number of pixels constituting the liquid crystal display element. If the number of pixels is increased in order to obtain an image, the cost of the liquid crystal display element increases, and a higher-speed signal processing circuit is required. Therefore, a technique for displaying a higher-definition image using a liquid crystal display element having a limited number of pixels has been developed. As such a technique, for example, the following Patent Document 1 and
[0003]
By the way, in an image display device using a pixel shifting means, it is known that performance such as contrast deteriorates due to display during operation when performing pixel shifting. Therefore, in the following
[0004]
In addition, there is a spatial light modulation element (LCOS) made of a liquid crystal display element using a ferroelectric liquid crystal, and the pixel switching time is generally about several tens μs although it depends on conditions such as a use temperature. It is suitable for high-speed operation.
One of the characteristics of the ferroelectric liquid crystal material used for this spatial light modulator (LCOS) is that spontaneous polarization occurs. For this reason, when configured as an image display element, the spontaneous polarization splits into two states above and below the substrate interface, making it bistable, so that the polarization state is maintained even when the external electric field is removed, and the memory performance is improved. Show. Since it has a memory property, once the pixel signal is written, the writing state is maintained even if the external electric field is stopped. However, since the ferroelectric liquid crystal has such a memory property, when a new display is performed, it is necessary to apply a compensation voltage as a process for neutralizing residual charges due to polarization. This is because, when the residual charge is left or when an electric field is further applied in the same direction as the residual charge, the possibility of ion breakdown of the ferroelectric liquid crystal is increased.

[Problems to be solved by the invention]
A display element comprising a plurality of pixels whose light can be controlled according to image information and a pixel shifting means for displacing the position of the pixels are provided, and light emitted from the plurality of pixels of the display element is emitted by the pixel shifting means. In an image display device that performs pixel shifting by shifting the axis and is capable of displaying an image with a resolution higher than the resolution of the display element, it takes time to shift when the optical axis is shifted by the pixel shifting means. . For this reason, when image data is displayed even during operation, a failure such as a decrease in contrast occurs. As means for solving this problem, as described in
[0007]
A spatial light modulation element (FLC-LCOS) using a ferroelectric liquid crystal must be applied with a compensation voltage during operation. When an image is displayed during the operation, a failure such as a decrease in contrast occurs. Also, in the image display device that performs pixel shifting, as described above, when the optical axis is shifted by the pixel shifting element, a time for shifting is inevitably generated, so that the image during that time is not displayed at a predetermined position and is not obstructed. It becomes. In addition, when a pixel shifting element having a finite stability period is used until a predetermined pixel is stably displayed after moving the center of gravity of the pixel due to pixel shifting, a phenomenon called pixel scattering occurs during the stable period. In addition, since the predetermined pixel is not displayed in the image in the meantime, when this is displayed, the image quality is deteriorated.
[0008]
Furthermore, in an image display device that uses a spatial light modulation element (FLC-LCOS) that uses ferroelectric liquid crystal as a display element and performs pixel shifting by a pixel shifting element, the above-described multiple problems occur at the same time. It is not possible to achieve the high quality originally required. Also, as described in
[0009]
The present invention has been made in view of the above circumstances, and when using a pixel shifting element having a finite stable period until a predetermined pixel is displayed even after moving the center of gravity of the pixel as a pixel shifting means, When using a spatial light modulation element made of a ferroelectric liquid crystal that requires the application of a compensation voltage as a process to neutralize the residual charge due to polarization when performing a new display, the image quality deteriorates. When there is a factor, the phenomenon that causes the degradation of image quality is aggregated within the shortest time, and the control that does not display the image during that time is removed, thereby removing the factor that degrades the image quality and higher than the resolution of the display element An object of the present invention is to provide an image display apparatus capable of displaying an image with high resolution and high image quality such as contrast.
[0010]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
As means for achieving the above object, the present invention is characterized by the following configurations.
In the first configuration of the present invention, a display element including a plurality of pixels whose light can be controlled according to image information and a pixel shifting means for displacing the position of the pixel are provided and emitted from the plurality of pixels of the display element. In an image display device capable of performing pixel shift by shifting the optical axis with respect to a light beam by the pixel shift means and displaying an image with a resolution higher than the resolution of the display element, the pixel shift means When a pixel shifting element having a finite stability period is used after the center of gravity shift until the predetermined pixel is stably displayed, the center of gravity shift of the pixel and the stable period until the predetermined pixel is displayed Is characterized in that control is performed so as not to display an image (claim 1).
[0011]

The third configuration is characterized in that in the image display device of the first configuration, control is performed to block light from the light source during a stable period until the center of gravity of the pixel is moved and a predetermined pixel is displayed. (Claim 3).
In the fourth configuration, in the image display device of the first configuration, during the stable period until the center of gravity of the pixel is moved and the predetermined pixel is displayed, the image display element is displayed in black or displayed with the lowest luminance. (Claim 4).
[0012]
In the fifth configuration, a display element including a plurality of pixels whose light can be controlled according to image information and a pixel shifting unit that displaces the position of the pixel are provided, and a light beam emitted from the plurality of pixels of the display element is provided. In the image display device capable of displaying an image with a resolution higher than the resolution of the display element, a new display is performed as the display element. In the case of using a spatial light modulator made of a ferroelectric liquid crystal that requires application of a compensation voltage as a process for neutralizing residual charges due to polarization, pixel shift is performed during application of the compensation voltage of the spatial light modulator. And during this period, control is performed so as not to display an image (Claim 5).
[0013]
In a sixth configuration, a display element including a plurality of pixels whose light can be controlled according to image information and a pixel shifting unit that displaces the position of the pixel are provided, and light rays emitted from the plurality of pixels of the display element are provided. In the image display device capable of displaying an image with a resolution higher than the resolution of the display element, a new display is performed as the display element. In this case, a spatial light modulation element made of a ferroelectric liquid crystal that requires the application of a compensation voltage is used as a process for neutralizing residual charges due to polarization. When a pixel shifting element having a finite stabilization period until stable display is used, the pixel overlap caused by the pixel shifting is applied during the application of the compensation voltage of the spatial light modulation element. Including moving and the stable period until a predetermined pixel is displayed, during that period, it is characterized in performing control not to display the image (claim 6).
[0014]
The seventh configuration is characterized in that in the image display device of the fifth or sixth configuration, control is performed to turn off the light source for at least the compensation voltage application time.
The eighth configuration is characterized in that in the image display device of the fifth or sixth configuration, control is performed to block light from the light source for at least the compensation voltage application time (claim 8).
[0015]
In the ninth configuration, a display element including a plurality of pixels whose light can be controlled according to image information and a pixel shifting unit that displaces the position of the pixel are provided, and light rays emitted from the plurality of pixels of the display element are provided. In the image display device capable of displaying an image with a resolution higher than the resolution of the display element, a new display is performed as the display element. In this case, a spatial light modulation element made of a ferroelectric liquid crystal that requires the application of a compensation voltage is used as a process for neutralizing residual charges due to polarization, and the time required for pixel shifting of the pixel shifting means is set to a compensation voltage application time. If it exceeds, the pixel shift operation period includes the compensation voltage application period of the spatial light modulation element, and during that period, control is performed so as not to display an image. A shall (claim 9).
[0016]
In the tenth configuration, in the image display device of the ninth configuration, control is performed to turn off the light source for at least the pixel shifting operation time.
The eleventh configuration is characterized in that in the image display device of the ninth configuration, control is performed to block light from the light source for a pixel shift operation time or longer.
[0017]
In a twelfth configuration, a display element including a plurality of pixels whose light can be controlled in accordance with image information and a pixel shifting unit that displaces the position of the pixel are provided, and the light emitted from the plurality of pixels of the display element In the image display device capable of displaying an image with a resolution higher than the resolution of the display element, a new display is performed as the display element. In this case, a spatial light modulation element made of a ferroelectric liquid crystal that requires the application of a compensation voltage is used as a process for neutralizing residual charges due to polarization. Using a pixel shift element that has a finite stability period until it is displayed stably, the pixel's center of gravity shifts due to pixel shift, and the stability until a predetermined pixel is displayed If the interval exceeds the compensation voltage application time, including the compensation voltage application period of the spatial light modulation element from the shift of the center of gravity of the pixel accompanying the pixel shift to the end of the stable period until the predetermined pixel is displayed, During the period, control is performed not to display an image (claim 12).
[0018]
The thirteenth configuration is characterized in that in the image display device of the twelfth configuration, the light source is controlled to be extinguished for at least the time from the start of the pixel shifting operation to the end of the stable period (claim 13).

If there is a factor that degrades image quality, such as when using a spatial light modulator made of a ferroelectric liquid crystal that requires the application of a compensation voltage as a treatment to neutralize residual charges due to polarization, the image quality may be degraded. By consolidating the phenomena that occur within the shortest time and controlling the image not to be displayed during that time, the factors that deteriorate the image quality are eliminated, and the image quality such as contrast is high in resolution that is higher than the resolution of the display element. If the compensation voltage application time exceeds the pixel shift operation time and the pixel shift is not completed during the compensation voltage application and the image is displayed after the compensation voltage application is completed, the pixel shift is not completed. Since the image is not displayed, an adverse effect caused by the image is generated on the image. Therefore, a method of including the compensation voltage application period in the pixel shift operation time and not displaying the image during the pixel shift operation time will be described. Here, the time T during the compensation voltage application and the pixel shift end 4 + T 5 As described above, T is displayed without image display. Three -T 5 The image is displayed at the following times. During the non-display time, for example, the light source 1 is turned off or light shielding is performed using various light shielding means (for example, the light shielding means shown in FIGS. 5 to 7). As a result, the influence on the image can be avoided, and high quality of the image quality such as contrast can be realized. In this embodiment, the pixel shift start and the compensation voltage application start are at the same timing, but the compensation voltage application timing is T 4 + T 5 As long as the application is completed, any timing may be used.
[0040]
(Example 7)
The basic configuration of the image display apparatus according to the present embodiment is the same as that of the sixth embodiment, but here, after the center of gravity of the pixel moves, a predetermined stable period is displayed until a predetermined pixel is stably displayed. A case will be described in which a pixel shift operation using a pixel shift element and a stable period until a predetermined pixel is displayed exceeds the compensation voltage application time of the spatial light modulation element. FIG. 11 is a timing chart showing another example of the operation of the image display device according to the present invention. In this timing chart, the time of pixel center-of-gravity movement by pixel shifting is expressed as T. 4 + T 5 Then, the time until a predetermined pixel is stably displayed is T 6 Then, the stable period T from the shift of the center of gravity of the pixel accompanying such a pixel shift until the predetermined pixel is displayed. 4 + T 5 + T 6 Is the compensation voltage application time T 4 If the image is displayed after the pixel shift operation and the application of the compensation voltage, which is before the end of the pixel display stabilization period, the pixel shift and the stable period may not be completed, so the predetermined pixel may not be displayed. And an adverse effect resulting from this occurs in the image.
[0041]
Therefore, the compensation voltage application period T 4 From the start of pixel shift to the end of the stable period T 4 + T 5 + T 6 A method for including the image and hiding the image in between will be described. Here, the time T from the pixel shift to the end of the stable period 4 + T 5 + T 6 As described above, T is displayed without displaying image data. Three -T 5 -T 6 The image is displayed at the following times. During the non-display time, for example, the light source is turned off or light shielding is performed using various light shielding means (for example, the light shielding means shown in FIGS. 5 to 7). As a result, the influence on the image can be avoided, and high quality of the image quality such as contrast can be realized. In this embodiment, the pixel shift start and the compensation voltage application start are at the same timing, but the compensation voltage application timing is T 4 + T 5 + T 6 As long as the application is completed, any timing may be used.
[0042]
【The invention's effect】
As described above, in the image display device having the first configuration according to the present invention, the image quality such as the contrast is controlled by performing the control not to display the image in the stable period until the center of gravity of the pixel is displayed and the predetermined pixel is displayed. Can be improved.
In the image display device of the second configuration, the scattering phenomenon is settled during the pixel center-of-gravity movement time by performing the control of turning off the illumination of the light source during the stable period until the pixel is displayed and the predetermined pixel is displayed. It is no longer possible to display an image that causes a reduction in image quality that occurs during the stable period until the image quality, such as contrast, is improved, and display image quality can be improved.
In the image display device having the third configuration, by performing control to block light from the light source during a stable period until the center of gravity of the pixel is displayed and a predetermined pixel is displayed, a scattering phenomenon occurs during the time of center of gravity movement of the pixel. Thus, it is possible to stop displaying an image that causes a decrease in image quality that occurs during a stable period until the image is settled, and to improve the image quality such as contrast without selecting a light source, and to improve the display image quality.

Further, image quality such as contrast can be improved by performing control not to display an image during the period.
In the image display device of the sixth configuration, spatial light modulation using a ferroelectric liquid crystal using a pixel shift element having a finite stability period until a predetermined pixel is stably displayed after moving the center of gravity of the pixel. By including the shift of the center of gravity of the pixel accompanying the pixel shift and the stable period until the predetermined pixel is displayed during application of the compensation voltage of the element, the time during which image quality degradation occurs can be reduced.
In the image display device having the seventh configuration, the image quality such as contrast can be improved by performing the control to turn off the light source for the compensation voltage application time or longer.
In the image display device having the eighth configuration, the image quality such as contrast can be improved without selecting the light source by blocking the light from the light source for the compensation voltage application time or longer.
[0044]
In the image display apparatus of the ninth configuration, when the time required for pixel shifting exceeds the compensation voltage application time, the time during which image quality deterioration occurs is reduced by applying the compensation voltage of the spatial light modulation element during pixel shifting. can do. Further, image quality such as contrast can be improved by performing control not to display an image during the period.
In the image display device having the tenth configuration, by performing control to turn off the light source for the pixel shift operation time or longer, the image quality such as contrast can be improved and the cause of deterioration of the image data can be suppressed.
In the image display device having the eleventh configuration, by performing control to block light from the light source for the pixel shift operation time or longer, the image quality such as contrast is improved without selecting the light source, and the cause of deterioration of the image data is suppressed. be able to.
[0045]
In the image display device of the twelfth configuration, when the time until the predetermined pixel is displayed after the shift of the center of gravity of the pixel due to the pixel shift exceeds the compensation voltage application time of the spatial light modulation element, the pixel shift due to the pixel shift By including the compensation voltage application period of the spatial light modulation element in the period from when the center of gravity moves to when a predetermined pixel is displayed, it is possible to reduce the time during which image quality degradation occurs. Further, image quality such as contrast can be improved by performing control not to display an image during the period.
In the image display device of the thirteenth configuration, the image quality such as contrast is improved and the image data is improved by turning off the light source for a time period from when the center of gravity of the pixel shifts due to pixel shifting to when a predetermined pixel is displayed. The cause of deterioration can be suppressed.
In the image display device of the fourteenth configuration, the light from the light source is shielded for more than the time until the predetermined pixel is displayed after the shift of the center of gravity of the pixel due to the pixel shift, so that the contrast or the like can be selected without selecting the light source. The image quality can be improved and the cause of the image data deterioration can be suppressed.
