BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an image forming apparatus such as a copying machine, a printer, and a FAX, and a developing device used in the apparatus, and more specifically, a toner carrier that carries toner on the surface and conveys the toner to a developing area facing a latent image carrier. A toner supply member that carries a two-component developer containing toner and magnetic particles on a surface thereof, conveys the toner to a toner supply region facing the toner carrier, and supplies the toner in the two-component developer to the toner carrier; The present invention relates to a developing device having a developing bias power source that applies a developing bias voltage to a carrier, and a toner supply bias power source that applies a toner supply bias voltage to a toner supply member, and an image forming apparatus including the developing device. is there.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Conventionally, as a method for developing a latent image on a latent image carrier, a two-component development method using a two-component developer containing toner and magnetic particles and a one-component development method using a one-component developer containing only toner are used. Are known. Among these development methods, the latter one-component development method is such that the toner carried on the surface of the toner carrying member in a uniform thinned state is opposed to the latent image on the surface of the latent image carrying member in a contact or non-contact state, thereby The toner is attached to the surface to form a visible image. On the other hand, in the two-component development method, a two-component developer composed of toner and magnetic particles is supported in a brush shape on the surface of a developer carrier having a built-in magnet to form a magnetic brush. A visible image is formed by attaching only the toner in the magnetic brush to the image.
[0003]
Among these development methods, the one-component development method does not use magnetic particles, so that there is no problem on the image such as development unevenness caused by the magnetic brush of the two-component developer hitting the latent image carrier, Development faithful to the electrostatic latent image can be performed. Therefore, a high-quality image can be obtained, which is advantageous for increasing the resolution.
However, in the one-component developing system, the blade is thinned against the toner on the surface of the toner carrier in order to make the toner supply roller slide in contact with the elastic toner carrier or to thin the toner on the toner carrier. Are moved relative to each other in contact. For this reason, the toner carrying member is worn out, or the toner on the toner carrying member is easily stressed to cause toner filming, which is not good in terms of durability of the apparatus. Further, since only the toner is continuously stirred in the developing device, the toner is liable to deteriorate, and it is difficult to obtain the temporal stability of the image quality.
[0004]
In view of this, the development method that combines the advantages of the two-component development method and the one-component development method is adopted, and a toner supply member having a magnetic brush made of a two-component developer formed on the surface is used. Development devices have been proposed in which only toner is supplied to and carried on a toner carrier by a brush (see, for example, JP-A-56-40862 and JP-A-59-172626).
[0005]
In these developing devices, the two-component developer is stirred in the developing device, and the two-component developer is carried on a toner supply member (for example, a magnetic roller, a magnetic brush forming body, etc.) to form a magnetic brush. The toner in the magnetic brush is charged to a predetermined polarity by friction with the magnetic particles. Only the toner charged to a predetermined polarity from the magnetic brush on the toner supply member moves and is carried on a toner carrier (for example, a developing roller, a toner layer holder, etc.). As a result, the stress on the toner carrier and the toner is reduced as compared with the one-component development method, and the development is performed by the one-component development method, so that high image quality equivalent to that of the one-component development method can be obtained.
[0006]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
In a developing device that combines the two-component developing method and the one-component developing method, a developing bias voltage is applied to a toner carrier from a developing bias power source. By applying the developing bias voltage, a predetermined developing electric field is formed in the developing region where the latent image carrier and the toner carrier face each other. Along with the application of the developing bias voltage, a toner supply bias voltage may be applied to the toner supply member from a toner supply bias power source. By applying the toner supply bias voltage, a potential difference is generated between the surface of the toner carrier and the surface of the toner supply member, and the charged toner in the magnetic brush on the toner supply member is transferred to the toner supply region where both surfaces face each other. An electric field for supplying toner to be moved to the carrier side is formed. The toner supply electric field can promote toner movement from the magnetic brush on the toner supply member to the surface of the toner carrying member, thereby improving toner supply efficiency.
[0007]
However, when the configuration in which the toner supply bias voltage is applied is adopted, if the potential (absolute value) on the surface of the toner carrying member is abnormally lowered for some reason, the surface of the toner supply member is separated from the surface of the toner supply member through the toner supply region where the developer exists. There is a possibility that an excessive current flows in a current path between the surface of the toner carrier. This excess current is likely to occur particularly when the toner supply member is made of a conductive material. The cause of the abnormal lowering of the potential on the surface of the toner carrying member is, for example, that a defect occurs in a part of the latent image carrying member and the electric resistance is remarkably lowered, and a current due to the developing bias voltage flows intensively in the defective portion. It is possible. Another possible cause is that a connection failure occurs in a part of the developing bias voltage application circuit and the surface of the toner carrier does not rise to a predetermined potential.
[0008]
In addition, even when the direction of the toner supply electric field is switched, the potential (absolute value) on the surface of the toner carrying member may be abnormally reduced and an excessive current may flow. For example, as disclosed in Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 6-67546, an electric field formed between a toner carrier and a toner supply member (developer carrier) is intermittently supplied from the toner carrier. When an electric field switching means for switching so as to shift to the member side is provided, the excess current may flow transiently with the electric field switching.
[0009]
If excessive current flows in the current path through the toner supply area, magnetic particles adhere to the surface of the toner carrier, the developer overflows in the toner supply area, or the toner carrier surface layer is damaged by dielectric breakdown. For example, there is a possibility that a serious failure that is difficult for the user to maintain may occur. When such a failure occurs, repair by a service person is required.
Although it is conceivable to provide an automatic cutoff circuit that detects the excess current and automatically shuts off the application of the bias voltage when the excess current flows, the configuration of the power source becomes complicated and the cost increases. There is a problem that it ends up.
[0010]
The present invention has been made in view of the above background, and an object of the present invention is to provide a toner when the absolute value of the surface potential of the toner carrier is abnormally reduced without providing an automatic cutoff circuit based on excess current detection. An object of the present invention is to provide a developing device and an image forming apparatus capable of suppressing an excessive current in a current path through a supply region and preventing a serious failure.
