Description
The present invention generally relates to a method and an optical receiver for optical communication, and more particularly, to a method for optical communication applicable to high-power signal light and an optical receiver used for implementing the method.
In recent years, a manufacturing technique and a use technique of a silica-based optical fiber with a low loss (for example, 0.2 dB / km) have been established, and an optical communication system using the optical fiber as a transmission path has been put into practical use. Also, optical amplifiers for amplifying optical signals or signal light have been put to practical use in order to compensate for losses in optical fibers and enable transmission over long distances.
2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally known is an optical amplifying medium to which signal light to be amplified is supplied, and pumping for pumping the optical amplifying medium so that the optical amplifying medium provides a gain band including the wavelength of the signal light. An optical amplifier composed of a unit.
For example, an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) has been developed to amplify signal light having a wavelength of 1.55 μm with a small loss in a silica-based fiber. The EDFA includes an erbium-doped fiber (EDF) as an optical amplifying medium and a pump light source for supplying pump light having a predetermined wavelength to the EDF. By using pump light having a wavelength of 0.98 μm band or 1.48 μm band, a gain band including a wavelength of 1.55 μm can be obtained.
As a technique for increasing the transmission capacity of an optical fiber, there is wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). In a system to which WDM is applied, a plurality of optical carriers having different wavelengths are used. A plurality of optical signals obtained by independently modulating each optical carrier are wavelength division multiplexed by an optical multiplexer, and the resulting WDM signal light is sent out to an optical fiber transmission line. On the receiving side, the received WDM signal light is separated into individual optical signals by an optical demultiplexer, and transmission data is reproduced based on each optical signal. Therefore, by applying WDM, the transmission capacity in one optical fiber can be increased according to the number of multiplexing.
With the application of optical amplification and WDM to an optical fiber communication system, the power of signal light propagating through an optical fiber transmission line increases, and it is practically required to cope with this. For example, in a conventional type system to which optical amplification and WDM are not applied, the optical input power to the optical receiver is several dBm at the maximum, so that the components of the optical receiver were not destroyed. When the optical input power to the optical receiver exceeds 10 dBm due to the performance improvement of the WDM device or the optical amplifier by Raman amplification, it is necessary to consider the proof strength of the components of the optical receiver.
Specifically, since the upper limit of optical input power that can be withstood by an avalanche photodiode used as an optical / electrical converter in an optical receiver is approximately 5 dBm, if signal light exceeding 10 dBm is input, optical reception is caused by component destruction. The machine becomes unusable.
In order to cope with this problem, it may be proposed to provide the optical receiver with an optical attenuator that attenuates the signal light having a large power to a predetermined level, but this makes it impossible to receive the signal light with a small power. The dynamic range of the optical receiver is significantly degraded.
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide a method and an optical receiver for optical communication in which components such as an optical / electrical converter are not likely to be destroyed even when there is a large optical input power.
Other objects of the present invention will become clear from the following description.
According to the present invention, there are provided an optical fiber transmission line for transmitting signal light, and a limiter fiber having a threshold value that causes Brillouin scattering when light having a power substantially larger than that is input. , and a step of converting a signal light transmitted by the optical fiber transmission line comprising the steps of inputting to said limiter fiber, the signal light output from the limiter fiber into an electric signal by the optical / electrical converter, the limiter The threshold value is set such that the upper limit power of the signal light output from the fiber is the upper limit of the dynamic range of the optical / electrical converter that receives the signal light, and the attenuation coefficient of the limiter fiber is set to be the threshold value. A method is provided in which the effective core area and fiber length are controlled .
According to this method, when a large amount of light is input, Brillouin scattering occurs in the limiter fiber, and the power of light passing through the limiter fiber is reduced, so that components such as an optical / electrical converter are destroyed. And the object of the present invention is achieved.
According to another aspect of the present invention, an optical receiver for receiving signal light transmitted through an optical fiber transmission line is provided. This optical receiver has a threshold value that causes Brillouin scattering when light having a power substantially larger than that is input, and the limiter fiber to which signal light is input and the signal light output from the limiter fiber. And an optical / electrical converter for converting into an electrical signal.
For example, as the limiter fiber, an optical fiber having an effective core area smaller than the effective core area of the optical fiber transmission line or an optical fiber having a loss smaller than that of the fiber transmission line may be used. it can.
According to the present invention, there is an effect that it is possible to provide a method and an optical receiver for optical communication in which components such as an optical / electrical converter are not damaged even when there is a large optical input power. This makes it possible to provide an optical communication system and an optical receiver that have high performance and a long lifetime, and greatly contribute to the development of the field of optical fiber communication.
Form
Hereinafter, exemplary embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Referring to FIG. 1, an optical fiber transmission system to which the present invention is applicable is shown. In this system, a transmission-side WDM device 2 and a reception-side WDM device 4 are connected by an optical fiber transmission line 6, and the reception-side WDM device 4 is connected to an
The WDM unit 2 on the transmission side includes an optical multiplexer (MUX) 14 for wavelength division multiplexing optical signals received via a plurality of optical
The WDM device on the receiving side includes an
The
In the system configured as described above, the power of the signal light in the optical fiber transmission line 6 may be more than 10 dB due to the application of WDM and optical amplification. When such high-power signal light is supplied to the
Referring to FIG. 2, a first embodiment of an optical receiver according to the present invention is shown. In the following description, the part indicated by
Referring to FIG. 3, a limiter effect due to stimulated Brillouin scattering of a general single mode fiber is shown. The horizontal axis is the power (dBm) of the signal light input to the fiber, the vertical axis is the scattered light power (dBm) generated in the opposite direction to the input direction of the signal light, and the signal light is transmitted in the same direction as the input direction. The power (dBm) of light. It can be seen that the power of the output light saturates and the power of the scattered light suddenly increases when the power of the input signal light exceeds 5 dBm.
Therefore, by inserting the
Next, the threshold value at which the
Pth=21KAeff/gLeff
P th = 21 KA eff / gL eff
Here, K is a constant depending on the degree of freedom of the polarization state, A eff is the effective core area of the fiber, g is the Brillouin gain coefficient, and L eff is the effective length of the fiber defined by the following equation.
Leff=(1−exp(−αL)/α)
L eff = (1−exp (−αL) / α)
Here, α is the attenuation coefficient of the fiber, and L is the length of the fiber.
Accordingly, the threshold can be reduced by reducing the effective core area A eff of the fiber, decreasing the fiber attenuation coefficient α, or increasing the fiber length L. In other words, a desired threshold value can be obtained by appropriately setting these parameters. For example, the effective core area A eff and the attenuation coefficient α of the
In the embodiment of FIG. 2, when the power of light input to the
FIG. 4 is a block diagram showing a second preferred embodiment of the optical receiver according to the present invention. In contrast to the embodiment shown in FIG. 2, this embodiment is characterized in that an
According to this configuration, the scattered light guided in the direction opposite to the signal light propagation direction by the

FIG. 6 is a block diagram showing a fourth preferred embodiment of the optical receiver according to the present invention. Here, the same
FIG. 7 is a block diagram showing a fifth preferred embodiment of the optical receiver according to the present invention. In this embodiment, a laser diode (LD) 44 is additionally provided as a light source for supplying reverse light having a wavelength different from that of the signal light to the
Generally, in the band of 1550 nm, the Raman effect has a peak at a frequency shifted by +13 THz (about 100 nm in terms of wavelength), and a wide amplification effect can be obtained over a band exceeding 40 THz. Therefore, the signal light is Raman-amplified in the
The wavelength of the laser diode 44 is set to, for example, about 1650 nm in the above-described embodiment, but may be matched with the wavelength of light generated by stimulated Brillouin scattering. This increases the power shift from the signal light to the scattered light in the
