本発明は、プリンタ、ファクシミリ、複写機等の画像形成装置及び当該装置に装着される加熱定着装置に関するものである。

【従来の技術】
可視像形成のためにトナーを用いる画像形成装置においては、トナー画像を紙やOHPシートなどの記録材に定着するために、記録材を加熱ローラと加圧ローラとで挟持搬送しつつトナー画像を記録材上に定着する加熱加圧型定着装置が一般に使用されている。ローラを加熱する方式としては、AlやSUSなどの金属からなるローラ内に内蔵されたハロゲンランプにより加熱する輻射加熱方式、金属パイプからなる円筒体の内周面に耐熱絶縁層を配置し、その内面側にセラミックスヒータ等の発熱抵抗体を設ける、あるいはローラ自体が発熱抵抗体で形成されている表面発熱方式、さらには金属導電体からなるローラを内部に収容した誘導コイルに生じる高周波磁界による渦電流によって加熱する誘導発熱方式などがある。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
以上のような加熱源をローラ内に配する定着装置の近傍においてジャムが発生すると、ユーザや修理者は部材が高温になった範囲でそのジャム紙を取り除かなければならない。加熱源への給電がオフになっていて、室温に低下中の比較的低い高温状態であれば、ローラやその周辺の部材に触れても問題ないが、オンオフ制御中や給電オフの直後など比較的高い温度状態において、高温の部材に触れるとやけどを負うこととなってしまう。どの程度の高温状態であるかを判断することは従来において容易でなく、注意深く高温になった部材に触れてみる等で判断しているにすぎない。十分に冷えるのを待っていると、作業効率が妨げられる。メンテナンス時においても同様の問題がある。ハロゲンランプを加熱源とする装置であって、外部からランプ光を認知できるような構成になっているものであれば、給電中か否かを判断する程度のことは可能であるが、ジャム処理やメンテナンスなどの作業を安全に行うことができるか否かを簡単に判断することは容易でない。

そこで本発明は、上述の問題に鑑み、加熱源をローラ内に備えた定着装置や当該定着装置を有する画像形成装置において極めて簡単な構成を利用してジャム処理やメンテナンスなどの作業を待機時間も短く安全に行うことができ、特に定着装置を画像形成装置本体から取り外しても定着装置の電気的な温度検知を引き続き行うことができるようにすることを課題とする。

【課題を解決するための手段】
上記課題は、記録材を挟持搬送してトナー画像を上記記録材に定着する定着装置にして、少なくとも加熱ローラ内に加熱源を備えた定着装置において、定着装置が所定の高温状態であることを検知・表示する注意喚起手段を備え、当該注意喚起手段が、ゼーベック効果による熱電素子と当該熱電素子により発生する電力で駆動される表示器を備えることによって、解決される。所定の高温状態とは、触れた場合にやけどを負うような温度状態を意味する。

【発明の実施の形態】
本発明の詳細を、図に示す例に基づいて説明する。以下の例においては、画像形成装置に装着される定着ローラ(加熱ローラ)近傍に注目して述べ、特に断らない限り、説明しない部分については在来の装置(定着装置及び画像形成装置)と同様であるものと理解されるべきものである。

第1の実施形態を概念的に示す図1において、例えば誘導発熱式の定着ローラ1の温度検出にゼーベック効果を利用した半導体タイプの熱電素子2が用いられる。この熱電素子2は、定着ローラ1に近い側の高温側電極21と反対側の低温側電極22の間にP型半導体23とN型半導体24を有してなるものである。低温側電極22は雰囲気での室温状態となっている。そして熱電素子2は、定着ローラ1の表面から数mm程度離れるように定置配置されているが、不図示の接離機構を用いて例えば装置の動作時には定着ローラから離れ、動作終了後には接触するように、必要に応じて定着ローラ表面と接離するようになっていてもよい。

熱電素子2のPN電極によって発光ダイオード(LED)3が駆動するようになっているが、この場合、時間の経過につれて低温側電極22も伝導熱によって温度が上昇すると、高温側との温度差が減りLED3の駆動時間が短くなってしまうので、これを避けるために低温側電極22には放熱板4が取り付けられ、雰囲気温度と同程度に維持される。図示していないが、熱電効果が少なく、LED3を駆動するほどの電圧が得られない場合には、熱電素子2とLED3の間に電子回路による駆動回路を入れるようにしてもよい。 以上のような構成によって、定着ローラ1が所定の高温状態にある場合には、その雰囲気との温度差により熱電素子2が熱電効果を生じ、LED3を駆動して定着ローラ1が所定の高温状態にあることを表示する。

周知のように、熱電素子には可逆性があるので、以上の構成を、市販の熱電冷却素子を用いて実現することもできる。また上記2例では、高温表示機構をすべて定着ローラ付近に配設するので、画像形成装置から定着装置を取り外した場合でも、高温表示をすることができる。

上記2例のように、特に本体側から電源供給を受けずに、定着ローラ部分のみをもって高温状態を表示できる機構としておけば、本体の電源がオフになっても表示器が点灯可能で、注意を促すことができ、安全である。

上記2例はいずれも高温状態の表示器を定着ローラ1の、したがって検出装置の近傍に配置する構成となっているが、図3に概念的に示すように、更に「定着部が高温です」「高温注意」などの注意を促すメッセージを、画像形成装置本体のCPU10を経由して操作パネル11に表示させることで、機械カバーを開ける前にも、注意を促すことが可能となる。定着ローラ近傍に表示器を配することに代えて、操作パネル11にのみメッセージを表示させることも当然ながら可能である。

【発明の効果】
本発明によれば、記録材を挟持搬送してトナー画像を上記記録材に定着する定着装置にして、少なくとも加熱ローラ内に加熱源を備えた定着装置において、定着装置が所定の高温状態であることを検知・表示する注意喚起手段を備えているので、ジャム処理やメンテナンスなどの作業を待機時間も短く安全に行うことができる。加熱源をハロゲンランプとし、外部からランプ光を認知できる構成になっているものであれば、ランプ光が点灯しているか否かによる判断との二重チェックが可能である。また他の加熱源を利用するものにあっても、皮膚感に頼るだけでなく、安全にジャム処理等を、しかも速やかに行うことができる。
