本発明は、応力発光表示装置に関し、特に、機械的エネルギーを光に変換する応力発光材料を利用した応力発光表示装置に関する。

従来より、発光タイプの表示装置として、CRT(Cathode Ray Tube)やプラズマディスプレーなどが用いられている。また、大型表示装置としてはLEDを用いたものが採用されている。その他、現在、エレクトロルミネセンスを用いた表示装置が開発されつつある。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
しかしながら、表示装置は多様な環境で使用されるものであるため、多様な表示装置が要求されている。近年、機械的エネルギーを光に変換する応力発光材料が開発されつつある。機械的エネルギーをエネルギー源とする発光を表示装置に応用すれば、これまでにない環境での使用や表示装置の新しい使い方を提案できる可能性がある。

本発明は、かかる発案からなされたもので、機械的エネルギーを光に変換する応力発光材料を用いた応力発光表示装置を提供することを目的とする。

【課題を解決するための手段】
本発明は、機械的エネルギーを光に変換する応力発光材料を薄膜化した応力発光層を画素毎に独立して変形を生じる変形可能基体の上に設け、変形可能基体の変形に伴って応力発光層が変形し、この機械的エネルギーを応力発光層が光に変換することによって、画素毎に発光する表示装置を構成したものである。

【発明の実施の形態】
以下、本発明の応力発光表示装置の実施の形態について説明するが、本発明は以下の実施の形態に限定されるものではない。

図1に、本発明の応力発光表示装置の画素を構成する発光素子を示す。図1(a)に示す発光素子1aは、独立して変形を受ける変形可能基体2aを有し、変形可能基体2a上に応力発光層3を有する。変形可能基体2aとしては、(a)に示すように、フィルム状で、破線で示すように厚さ方向に変形するものが例示される。

また、図1(b)に示す発光素子1bは、矢印の如く厚さ方向と直交する方向に変形するような薄い変形可能基体2b上に応力発光層3が設けられている構造を有する。

変形可能基体2a、2bを変形させるには、変形可能基体2a、2bに外部から機械的に変形を与える方法と、変形可能基体2a、2bに電気、光学、磁気、熱等のエネルギーを与えて変形可能基体2a、2b自体に変形を起こさせる方法とがある。図1(b)に示すような振動を生じるものとしては、例えばPZTを用いた円盤形のランジバン形振動子を例示することができる。

応力発光層3は応力発光材料を含有する。応力発光材料は、摩擦力、剪断力、衝撃力、圧力、張力などの機械的な外力による変形によってその機械的エネルギーを光に変換することができる。応力発光材料は、機械的エネルギーによって励起されたキャリアーが基底状態に戻る際に発光する。応力発光材料は、母材となる材料に発光中心イオンを添加することにより、発光強度を著しく高めることが可能である。変形可能基体2a、2bの変形により応力発光層3が変形を受け、受けた機械的エネルギーに応じて応力発光層3が発光する。発光強度は受けた機械的エネルギーにほぼ比例して強くなる。発光色は母材の種類、発光中心イオンの種類によって変化する。

応力発光材料の母材としては、例えばアルカリ土類金属酸化物とアルミニウム酸化物とから構成され、アルカリ土類金属イオンの組成比を欠損させた非化学量論的組成を有するアルミン酸塩を例示することができる(特開2001−49251号)。欠損の割合は0.01〜10モル%の範囲である。発光中心イオンとしては、希土類金属や遷移金属が用いられる。希土類金属としては、Ce、Y、La、Eu、Sm等が挙げられる。遷移金属としてはV、Mn、Cu、Ti、Zr、Co、Nb、Mo、Ta、W等が挙げられる。具体的な組成としては、発光中心イオンとしてEuを用いたSr0.90Al2O3.90:Eu0.01を挙げることができる。

また、ZnS、ZnO、SiC等のウルツ鉱型構造の化合物を例示することができる(特開平11−120801号公報)。発光中心イオンは前記と同様である。代表的な組成は発光中心イオンとしてマンガンが5重量%添加された硫化亜鉛である。

また、Sr3Al2O6又はCa3Al2O6に発光中心イオンを添加したものも挙げることができる(特開2000−63824号)。代表的な組成は、発光中心イオンとしてEuを0.6重量%添加したSr3Al2O6である。

応力発光材料は、硫化亜鉛のようにスパッタリング、真空蒸着、イオンプレーティング法等の物理的成膜法やCVD(化学蒸着)により成膜できる場合は、変形可能基体2、2b上に直接成膜して応力発光層3を形成することができる。また、粉末状にして、例えばエポキシ系接着剤、シリコーン系接着剤、アクリル系接着剤などの透明被膜を形成できる接着剤に混合し、変形可能基体2、2b上に塗布することにより、応力発光層3を形成することができる。

次に、本発明の応力発光表示装置の具体的な構造について説明する。図2は、超音波駆動による平面型応力発光表示装置の概略構成図である。この表示装置10は、変形可能基体として図示しない枠体などに張設された矩形状の振動膜11が用いられている。振動膜11は高分子フィルムで構成されている。振動膜11の上に図示しない応力発光層が設けられている。

振動膜11の縦方向の1辺にはX方向のマトリクスを構成する図示しない超音波振動子が水平方向に超音波を発振するように配列されている。横方向の1辺にはY方向のマトリクスを構成する図示しない超音波振動子が垂直方向に超音波を発振するように配列されている。振動子は指向性が鋭く、また、超音波は固体中では良く伝搬する性質を持っているため、振動子から発射された超音波は、振動膜11を直進する。X方向に発射された超音波とY方向に発射された超音波の交点で振幅が最大になる共振点となり、交点と交点の中間は振幅がゼロの定在波が発生する。従って、X方向に入力された超音波とY方向に入力された超音波の交点部分の振動膜が独立して変形する画素となり、交点の上の応力発光層のみが発光する。そのため、この応力発光表示装置10は、XYの両方向の超音波振動子の発振を制御することによって特定の画素を選択的に発光させ、発光を制御することによって画像を表示することができる。

超音波振動子としては、棒状フェライトを2本組み合わせたπ形フェライト振動子、ニッケル振動子等の磁歪振動子、PZT振動子、水晶振動子等の電歪振動子を例示することができる。

このような超音波駆動の平面型応力発光表示装置は、表示部が振動膜11であるため、超薄型とすることが可能である。

図3に示す応力発光表示素子は、画素毎に振動子を配置した例を示す。図3(a)に示す応力発光表示素子1cは、画素毎に振動膜13がこれを支持する枠体14で囲まれ、画素毎に振動膜13に固定されている超音波振動子15を配置し、振動膜13上に応力発光層3が設けられている構造を有する。

超音波振動子15の発振を制御し、超音波振動子15で画素毎に独立している振動膜13を振動させ、振動膜13上に設けられている応力発光層3を画素毎に発光させる。振動膜13と振動膜13を支える枠体14は、例えばシリコン単結晶板のエッチングにより一体に製造することができる。

また、図3(b)に示す応力発光素子1dは、ランジバン形振動子を変形可能基体して用いた例を示す。円盤形のランジバン形振動子20は、径方向に振動する。このランジバン形振動子20は、円盤形に成形されたPZT等の厚さ方向と直交する方向に伸縮する圧電体21の両面に電極として銀の蒸着膜22,23が形成された構造を有する。応力発光素子1dはランジバン形振動子20の一方の電極23上に応力発光層3が設けられている構造を有する。

電極22,23に高圧の直流電圧を印加して圧電体21にストレスを与えながら交番電位を重ねることにより、圧電体21に電気変位の2乗に比例した径方向の歪みが生じる。圧電体21の歪みにより応力発光層3が変形を受け、発光する。このような発光素子1dを画素としてマトリクス状に配列することにより、応力発光表示装置として構成することができる。

また、厚さ方向と直交する方向に伸縮する圧電体薄膜の両面に電極を設け、電極の上に応力発光層を設けた構造は、フォトリソグラフィを用いることによって、極めて小型化が可能であり、多数の応力発光素子を有する表示装置を一体で作製することができる。

図4に示す応力発光素子は、カンチレバー形に形成した圧電素子を変形可能基体として発光素子を形成した例を示す。

この発光素子1eは、シリコン基板31の表面に設けられた窪み32の上に突出した片持梁(カンチレバー)33が形成され、カンチレバー33の上に第1電極膜34、圧電体膜35、第2電極膜36、応力発光層3がこの順序で設けられている構造である。圧電体膜35はPbTiO3、PZT等の圧電効果を有する材料が選択される。カンチレバー33はシリコン又は酸化シリコンで構成される。第1電極34は例えばクロム又はチタン膜の上に白金膜が設けられている。第2電極36は例えばアルミニウムが用いられる。シリコン基板31上に形成されるこれらの構造は、フォトリソグラフィを用いて形成することができる。

第1電極34と第2電極36とを介して圧電体膜35に交流を印加すると、圧電体膜35が変形し、カンチレバー33の自由端が振動する。カンチレバー33の変形により、応力発光層3が変形を受け、発光する。このような構造の発光素子1eをマトリクス状に配置することにより表示装置として用いることができる。この発光素子1eは、フォトリソグラフィにより形成できるため、非常に小型化でき、多数の発光素子1eを有する表示装置をシリコン基板31上に形成することができる。

図5に示す応力発光素子は、平面スピーカを利用したものである。この発光素子1fは、板状又は棒状の磁石41の両側に接近して一対の振動膜42が張設されている。振動膜42は例えばポリイミド等の高分子フィルムで構成され、図示しない枠体に支持されている。それぞれの振動膜42の外表面に振動膜42上に蒸着された銅膜をエッチングして形成された渦巻き状のボイスコイル43が設けられている。それぞれの振動膜42の外表面にはボイスコイル43を覆って応力発光層3が設けられている。

両方のボイスコイル43に同位相の電流を流すと、両振動膜42が逆方向に振動し、両方向に同じ音が出力される。ボイスコイル43は平行ピストン運動に近い振動であり、変形量は小さいが、ボイスコイル43と振動膜42を支持する枠体との間の振動膜42aが大きく変形し、応力発光層3が発光する。このように構成した発光素子1fを画素としてマトリクス状に配置することによって表示装置として用いることができる。なお、振動膜42は片方のみとすることができる。

このような応力発光表示装置は、薄型であり、しかも両面表示が可能であり、その上画像と同時に音声を出力することができる。そのため、今までにない用途に用いることができる。

【発明の効果】
本発明の応力発光表示装置は、機械的エネルギーを光に変換する応力発光層を画素毎に変形する変形可能基体上に設けている構造であり、種々の方法で変形可能基体に変形を与えることによって応力発光層が発光するため、発光タイプの表示装置として用いることができる。

According to the present invention, a stress-stimulated light-emitting layer obtained by thinning a stress-stimulated luminescent material that converts mechanical energy into light is provided on a deformable substrate that causes deformation independently for each pixel, and stress light emission is accompanied by deformation of the deformable substrate. The layer is deformed, and this mechanical energy is converted into light by the stress light emitting layer, whereby a display device that emits light for each pixel is configured.
