(技術分野)
この発明は光導波(optical waveguide)の分野に関し、特に電磁放射の導波を増強させるための全方向多層デバイス(device)に関する。

鏡はおそらく光学デバイス中で最も一般的なものである。古代人は鏡を知っており崇拝と美の対象として使用し、現在では鏡は画像化、太陽エネルギーの収集、レーザ空洞(キャビティ:cavity)において使用されている。鏡のおもしろい光学的性質は、科学者のみらず、芸術家や作家の想像力を捕らえてきた。

2つの型の鏡、すなわち昔から続いている金属の鏡とより最近の誘電体の鏡とに分類することができる。金属の鏡は任意の角度から入射する広いレンジ(range)の周波数にわたり、光を反射する。すなわち、全方向反射である。しかしながら、赤外及び可視周波数では、数パーセントの入射パワーは吸収により典型的には失われる。多層誘電体鏡は主に特別な角度あるいは特別の角度範囲から入射する狭いレンジの周波数を反射させるために使用される。対応する金属鏡とは異なり、誘電体反射器の損失は非常に低いものとすることができる。

全誘導体構造に対し、任意の入射角の光を反射することができる能力は、完全な光子バンドギャップの存在と関連する。このバンドギャップは3つの直交する方向に沿って周期的な誘電体機能を有するシステムにおいてのみ存在することができる。実際、最近の理論的な解析によると、1つの界面を有する周期システムにおいて全方向反射を達成するための十分条件は、雰囲気媒質の光円錐上方の位相空間においてオーバーラップバンドギャップ領域が存在することであることが予想された。

理論的解析は拡張され、赤外周波数において動作可能な多層全方向反射器が実験的に提供されている。その構造は異なる誘電定数を有する材料(ポリスチレンとテルル)の薄層で構成され、金属鏡と誘電体鏡の両方の特徴が結合されている。その構造は、周波数選択性を備えた金属様の全方向反射と、多層誘電体に典型的な低損失挙動を示す。

(発明の開示)
したがって、この発明によれば、電磁放射が閉じ込められる少なくとも1つの内部コア領域と、前記内部領域を取り囲む少なくとも2つの外部領域とを有し、その領域はそれぞれ異なる屈折率を有するデバイスが提供される。外部領域は電磁放射を内部コア領域内に閉じ込める。屈折率、外部領域の数及び外部領域の厚さにより、平面構造では、電磁放射の波長レンジに対し全ての偏光において、0°から少なくとも80°までの範囲の入射角に対し95%を超える反射率が得られる。例示的な実施の形態においては、内部コア領域は低誘電材料で形成され、外部領域は低誘電材料と高誘電材料の交互層を含む。この発明の1つの観点では、デバイスは導波路であり、他の観点ではデバイスは微小空洞(ミクロキャビティ:microcavity)である。

(発明の実施の形態)
図1は、本発明にかかる多層周期誘電膜構造100の1つの例示的な実施の形態の簡略化したブロック図である。この構造は、界面で、n0で特徴付けられる(例えばn0=1の空気)均一な媒質に結合された交互の誘電層102、104のアレイから形成される。電磁波は均質な媒質から多層膜に入射する。そのようなシステムに対する全方向反射の可能性は現在認識されている。h1及びh2は層の厚さであり、n1及びn2はそれぞれの層104,102の屈折率である。

主な興味は周期構造の外部の均一な媒質から発する波にあるので、光線上に存在する位相の部分にのみ焦点が存在する。均一な媒質から生ずる波は条件ω≧cky/n0を満たす。式において、n0は均一媒質の屈折率であり、そのため均質媒質は光線上に存在しなければならない。ky=0の均一媒質の状態は直角入射であり、kx=0のω=cky/n0線上に存在する状態は90°の角度での入射である。

図2Aへと導かれる多層系は、制限された反射率円錐を有する構造を表す。というのは、どの周波数に対しても常にkyベクトルを見出すことができるからである。そのベクトルに対しては、その周波数の波はその構造内を伝播することができ、このようにその膜を通過することができる。例えば、ω=0.285 2πc/aの波(水平破線218)はTEモードでは0(垂直入射)から0.285 2π/a(90°入射)までの範囲のky値のレンジでは反射され、一方、TMモードではその波はky=0.187 2π/a(〓41°入射)で透過し始める。所定の周波数での全方向反射に対する必要かつ十分な基準は、光円錐内で構造の透過状態が存在しないことである。この基準は図2Bの周波数レンジ214及び216で満足される。実際、図2Bに導かれる系は2つの全方向反射レンジを示す。

全方向反射に対する必要条件は、構造の外側からの光が多層構造のブルースター角θB=tan-1(n1/n2)に到達することができないことである。というのは、この角度では、TMモードは透過されるからである。この条件は、ブルースター線が光線の外側に位置する時、すなわち層群の屈折率の項がsin-1(n0/n2)<θBである時に満たされる。十分条件は結晶内で伝播モードがky=0とky=ω/c間で存在しない1つの特別の周波数の存在である。

垂直入射から離れると、TMモードの電場は周期性方向の成分を有する。この成分は電場の大部分を低い誘電領域に押しやる。そのためTMモードの群速度は向上する。対照的に、TEモードの電場は常に周期性の方向に対し垂直であり、そのエネルギーは主に高い誘電領域内に集中される。

ポリスチレン−テルル(PS−Te)材料系を選択して、全方向反射について明らかにした。テルルは高い屈折率を有し、興味のある周波数レンジでの損失特性が低い。さらに、PSのガラス転移温度が高いこと、凝縮の潜熱が比較的低いことにより、Teのポリマー層中への拡散が最小に抑えられる。測定レンジにおいて一連の吸収ピークを有するPSの選択により、吸収ピークが一過性の状態の領域内に位置する場合に生じる反射と吸収の間の競合が立証される。Te(0.8μm)及びPS(1.65μm)膜を逐次析出させ、9層膜を作製した。

NaCl 25mm塩基板(研摩NaClウインドウ、ウイルマッドグラス(Wilmad Glass))上にテルル(99.99+%、ストレムケミカルズ(Strem Chemicals))の0.8±0.09μm厚の膜を10-6torr、7Aで真空蒸着した(ラッドインダストリーズ(Ladd Indusctires)30000)。層の厚さ及び析出速度を結晶厚モニター(サイコン(Sycon)STM100)を用いてその場でモニタした。トルエン中10%のポリスチレン(グッドイヤー(Goodyesr) PS標準、110,000g/mol)溶液を1000RPMで、テルルコートされた基板上にスピンキャスト(cast)し、数時間乾燥させ、ポリマー層の厚さを1.65±0.09μmとした。9層膜の順はTe/PS/Te/PS/Te/PS/Te/PS/Teであった。

この特別な多層膜の光学応答は、どの入射角度においても(我々が0°から80°まで測定した実験では)10から15μmレンジにおいて高い反射領域を有するように設計した。斜角の入射での光学応答を、偏光子(ZnS スペクトラテック(SpectraTech))及び角反射ステージ(スペクトラテックによるビーマックス(VeeMax))を備えたフーリエ変換赤外分光計(ニコレット(Nicolet)860)を用いて測定した。垂直入射では、ニコレット赤外顕微鏡を用いて反射率を測定した。反射率測定のためのバックグラウンドとして、新たに蒸着させたアルミニウム鏡を使用した。

図4は、垂直、45°、80°の入射でのTM及びTEモードに対する波長の関数として計算した反射率(実線)及び測定した反射率(破線)(%)を示す一連のグラフである。このように、全方向反射バンドが示されている。図4では、計算された反射スペクトルと測定された反射スペクトルとの間での良い一致が示されている。計算は膜パラメータを用い、F.アベレス(Abeles)、De Physique 5,706(1950)(この内容はこの中で引用され参照される)において説明されている変換行列法を用いて行った。

異なる入射角での高い反射率の領域はオーバーラップし、あらゆる角の入射光に対する周波数の反射レンジが形成される。全方向レンジの周波数位置は層の厚さにより決定され、調整すると仕様を満たすことが可能である。式6からレンジは5.6μmであると計算され、中央波長は12.4μmであり、実験の屈折率パラメータに対する図3の破線で示される45%のレンジ対ミッドレンジ比に対応する。これらの値は測定データと一致する。計算は損失のない媒質に対するものであり、そのため〜13及び14μmでのPS吸収バンドの予想をしていない。PS吸収ピークはTMモードでは入射角が大きくなるにつれ増加し、TEモードでは減少することがわかる。

この現象に対する物理的基盤は、透過の深さと吸収量との関係にある。透過長はξ∝Im(1/K)であり、Kはブロッホの波数である。ξは全方向反射器のTMモードでは入射角の単調増加関数であり、TEモードではほぼ一定である。このように、TMモードは、図5の表に示されるように、入射角が増加すると構造内により深く浸透し、より簡単に吸収される。そのギャップ内に存在するモードに対するブロッホの波数の虚部分の大きさはバンド端からの距離に関連する。この距離はTEモードでは入射角が増加するとギャップが広がるため増加し、TMモードではギャップが縮むために減少する。

PS−Te構造は完全な光子バンドギャップを有しない。その全方向反射は、それよりも系の伝播状態に有効な制限された位相空間による。材料及びプロセスは、低コスト、広い領域への適用性に対し選択した。全方向性の他に、測定によりポリマーは赤外領域では損失があるが、性能を犠牲にせず反射用に適用することができることが示されている。全方向反射を達成する可能性は、材料の特別な選択には関連せず、興味のある多くの波長に適用することができる。この発明にかかる構造は広範囲の周波数に対し金属様の全方向反射を提供し、同時に損失が低い。さらに、周波数選択の柔軟性が提供される。

本発明にかかる、全反射多層膜を用いたキャビティ内での光の閉じ込め及び導波について説明する。多層膜構造は、共に出願中の、共通の譲受人の、1999年2月19日に出願された出願番号第09/253,379号及び1999年3月12に出願された出願番号第09/267,854号において説明されている。これらはこの中で引用され、参照される。特に、非常に損失の低い広帯域光ファイバの製造方法が提供される。この光ファイバは鋭く曲がった部分の周りを伝達することができる。さらに、設計により、近距離場光ファイバチップの出力を伝える能力が改良される。

図6Aは例示的な構造600の簡略化したブロック断面図である。図6Bはその構造600の半径方向の屈折率プロファイルの対応する断面図である。構造は低い誘電材料n0、例えば空気を中心とする屈折率n1,n2が交互となっている同一中心の円筒形層群604−616からなっている。コアの半径はh0であり、層の厚さはh1,h2である。例示的な実施の形態は異なる材料及び対応する異なる層厚からなる個々の層を含む。多層膜のパラメータは、どの入射角及び偏光からの光も信号周波数のレンジでは多層膜により完全に反射されるように選択される。

例えば、図2Bのようにn0,n1,n2,h1,h2の値では、光は2つの広帯域全方向反射レンジ214及び216内ではどの周波数でも光を導くことができる。一般的には、電磁放射は閉じ込められる領域のサイズにより、マルチモードあるいは単一モードである。このように、各広帯域レンジ内では、電磁放射は内側のコア領域のサイズによりマルチモードとも単一モードともすることができる。コア半径が大きいと、光はマルチモードであり、半径が非常に小さいと光は単一モードである。

従来の光ファイバは、総内側反射により伝播EMパルスを閉じ込め、その場合、電磁(EM)波は低インデックスクラッディングにより取り囲まれた高インデックスファイバコアを通って進行する。本発明によれば、オムニガイド(Omniguide:登録商標)導波構造内での閉じ込めの方法は、中空ファイバの壁でのEM波の偏光独立全方向反射である。この閉じ込めのモードの利点は多い。

材料吸収に関連する損失は非常に低い。というのは、波は本質的に空気中を進行するからである。空気は他の高密度の媒質に比べ損失が非常に低い。これにより、損失の低い伝播が可能となる。これは、通信用の光ガイド、レーザなどを含む基本的に全てのデバイスにおいて重要なことである。

従来の光通信ファイバでは材料中の吸収損失を補償するために増幅させる必要があり、このため、ファイバには周期的にエルビウムがドープされる。エルビウムを使用すると、ファイバの帯域幅が厳密に制限される。この発明の構造の損失は非常に低く増幅する必要がないので、使用可能な帯域幅の大きさのオーダーを増加させることが可能である。さらに、全方向多層構造は強い閉じ込めメカニズムを提供し、他の強い閉じ込めメカニズムを有するシステムにおいて立証されているように非常に鋭い湾曲部の周りを通って信号を伝播させる。

そのような多層コートファイバはまた、近距離場走査光学顕微鏡においてファイバチップの出力を向上させるためにも重要である。そのチップを使用して、光の波長よりもずっと小さいスポットサイズの光出力を与える。そのような小さな長さの程度に光を閉じ込めるために現在では金属コーティングが使用されている。金属コーティングでは材料の吸収損失があり、この場合最大出力が制限される。多層コーティングを有するファイバチップはこの問題を克服する。というのは本質的に損失がないからである。

最終的な目的はこれまでに説明した構造に従う多層コーティングからなる壁を有する中空構造を作製することである。その構造は円筒形としてもよいが、それに限定されるものではない。そのような構造を作製するための1つの方法は、ガラスまたはポリマー製の薄壁中空ファイバを獲得する工程と、前記ファイバを誘電体で交互にコートする工程とを含む。層群は低い屈折率成分としてポリマーまたはガラス、高い屈折率材料としてゲルマニウムまたはテルルからなる。ファイバを獲得し、熱蒸着器またはスパッタリング装置を用いて所定の厚さの層の蒸着を行う。続く低インデックス層はそのファイバをポリマーの希薄溶液中に浸漬させることにより、あるいはモノマーを蒸着してその後直ちに重合させることにより、析出される。

他の例示的な方法は、図7に示されるように、一方には微細粉末の型の光インデックス成分が添加され、他方には添加物が存在しない、混合することのないポリマーの組み合わせを用いて全構造を共有押しだし成形する方法である。図7は本発明にかかる共有押しだし成形アセンブリ700の簡略化した概略図の断面である。押し出し成形装置702は空気コア706の周囲を取り囲む高インデックスポリマーと低インデックスポリマーの交互層群からなる構造704を提供する。

Claims (27)
- 電磁放射が閉じ込められる少なくとも1つの誘電内部コア領域と、
前記内部コア領域を取り囲む少なくとも2つの外部誘電領域であって、それぞれが異なる屈折率を有し、該外部領域により電磁放射が前記内部コア領域内に閉じ込められる外部誘電領域と、を備え、
前記外部領域は低誘電材料と高誘電材料の交互層群を含み、
前記屈折率、外部領域の数、外部領域の厚さにより、前記電磁放射の波長レンジに対する全ての偏光に対し0°から少なくとも80°の範囲の全ての入射角において、平面構造で95%より大きな反射率が得られるデバイス。 - 前記デバイスは円形断面を有する請求項1記載のデバイス。
- 前記内部コア領域は低誘電材料を含む請求項1記載のデバイス。
- 前記内部コア領域はガスを含む請求項3記載のデバイス。
- 前記内部コア領域は空気を含む請求項4記載のデバイス。
- 前記低誘電材料はポリマーまたはガラスを含む請求項1記載のデバイス。
- 前記高誘電材料はゲルマニウムまたはテルルを含む請求項1記載のデバイス。
- 電磁放射が閉じ込められる少なくとも1つの誘電内部コア領域と、
前記内部コア領域を取り囲む少なくとも2つの外部誘電領域であって、それぞれが異なる屈折率を有し、該外部領域により電磁放射が前記内部コア領域内に閉じ込められる外部誘電領域と、を備え、
前記外部領域は誘電体と薄い金属材料の交互層群を含み、
前記屈折率、外部領域の数、外部領域の厚さにより、前記電磁放射の波長レンジに対する全ての偏光に対し0°から少なくとも80°の範囲の全ての入射角において、平面構造で95%より大きな反射率が得られるデバイス。 - 前記デバイスは高出力電磁放射をガイドするために使用される請求項1記載のデバイス。
- 前記デバイスは少なくとも1つの広帯域領域の電磁放射をガイドするために使用される請求項1記載のデバイス。
- 前記デバイスは複数の広帯域領域の電磁放射をガイドするために使用される請求項1記載のデバイス。
- 前記広帯域領域における電磁放射は単一モードである請求項11記載のデバイス。
- 前記広帯域領域における電磁放射はマルチモードである請求項11記載のデバイス。
- 前記デバイスは電磁放射を閉じ込めるミクロキャビティとして使用される請求項1記載のデバイス。
- 光が閉じ込められる少なくとも1つの内部コア領域と、
前記内部コア領域を取り囲む少なくとも2つの外部領域であって、それぞれが異なる屈折率を有し、該外部領域により光が前記内部コア領域内に閉じ込められる外部領域と、を備え、
前記外部領域は低誘電材料と高誘電材料の交互層群を含み、
前記屈折率、外部領域の数、外部領域の厚さにより、前記光の波長レンジに対する全ての偏光に対し0°から少なくとも80°の範囲の全ての入射角において、平面構造で95%より大きな反射率が得られる、全方向反射を示す導波路。 - 光が閉じ込められる少なくとも1つの内部コア領域と、
前記内部コア領域を取り囲む少なくとも2つの外部領域であって、それぞれが異なる屈折率を有し、該外部領域により光が前記内部コア領域内に閉じ込められる外部領域と、を備え、
前記外部領域は低誘電材料と高誘電材料の交互層群を含み、
前記屈折率、外部領域の数、外部領域の厚さにより、前記光の波長レンジに対する全ての偏光に対し0°から少なくとも80°の範囲の全ての入射角において、平面構造で95%より大きな反射が得られるミクロキャビティ。 - 前記外部誘電領域の屈折率は等方性である請求項1記載のデバイス。
- 前記外部誘電領域のそれぞれの屈折率は前記誘電内部コア領域の屈折率よりも大きい請求項17記載のデバイス。
- 前記外部誘電領域のそれぞれの屈折率は前記誘電内部コア領域の屈折率よりも大きい請求項1記載のデバイス。
- 前記外部誘電領域の屈折率変化は、前記誘電内部コア領域から前記外部誘電領域に入射する電磁放射の全方向反射の周波数レンジを生成し、前記周波数レンジにおける全方向反射は、垂直入射電磁放射のバンド端に対応する周波数ωhにより上から規定され、TM電磁放射のバンド端と前記誘電内部コア領域により規定される光線との交わりに対応する周波数ωlにより下から規定される請求項1記載のデバイス。
- 前記外部誘電領域の屈折率変化は、(ωh−ωl)/[(1/2)(ωh+ωl)]で定義されるレンジ対ミッドレンジ比を形成し、前記レンジ比は10%以上である請求項20記載のデバイス。
- 前記外部誘電領域の屈折率変化は、(ωh−ωl)/[(1/2)(ωh+ωl)]で定義されるレンジ対ミッドレンジ比を形成し、前記レンジ比は20%以上である請求項20記載のデバイス。
- 前記外部誘電領域の屈折率変化は、(ωh−ωl)/[(1/2)(ωh+ωl)]で定義されるレンジ対ミッドレンジ比を形成し、前記レンジ比は30%以上である請求項20記載のデバイス。
- 前記外部誘電領域の屈折率変化は、(ωh−ωl)/[(1/2)(ωh+ωl)]で定義されるレンジ対ミッドレンジ比を形成し、前記レンジ比は40%以上である請求項20記載のデバイス。
- 電磁放射が閉じ込められる少なくとも1つの誘電内部コア領域と、
前記内部コア領域を取り囲む少なくとも2つの外部誘電領域であって、それぞれが異なる屈折率を有し、該外部領域により電磁放射が前記内部コア領域内に閉じ込められる外部誘電領域と、を備え、
前記外部領域は低誘電材料と高誘電材料の交互層群を含み、
前記外部誘電領域の屈折率変化は、前記誘電内部コア領域から前記外部誘電領域に入射する電磁放射の全方向反射の周波数レンジを生成し、前記周波数レンジにおける全方向反射は、垂直入射電磁放射のバンド端に対応する周波数ω h により上から規定され、TM電磁放射のバンド端と前記誘電内部コア領域により規定される光線との交わりに対応する周波数ω l により下から規定され、
前記屈折率、外部領域の数、外部領域の厚さにより、前記電磁放射の波長レンジに対する全ての偏光に対し0°から少なくとも80°の範囲の全ての入射角において、平面構造で95%より大きな反射率が得られるデバイス。 - 前記誘電内部コア領域の屈折率をn0、外部誘電領域の高誘電材料層及び低誘電材料層の屈折率をそれぞれn1、n2、膜厚をそれぞれh1、h2とした場合、n1>n2>n0である請求項25記載のデバイス。
