TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an electrophotographic image forming apparatus such as a copying machine, a printer, and a facsimile. More specifically, the present invention relates to heater control of an amorphous silicon (a-Si) photosensitive drum used therein.
[0002]
[Prior art]
In an electrophotographic image forming apparatus, an image in which a charging device, an exposure device, a developing device, a transfer device, a cleaning device, a static elimination device, and the like are arranged around a cylindrical photosensitive drum having a photosensitive layer coated on a surface thereof. A toner image formed on the photosensitive drum is formed on a sheet by forming a toner image on the sheet.
[0003]
The basic process of image formation in the image forming section will be described. First, the surface of the photosensitive drum is uniformly charged by corona discharge of the charging device while rotating in one direction at a constant speed. The charged surface is irradiated with exposure light for image information from the exposure device on the downstream side in the rotation direction, and an electrostatic latent image is formed. Further, the toner is adhered to the electrostatic latent image by a developing device disposed further downstream thereof to form a toner image. In the transfer device, the conveyed sheet comes into contact with the drum surface, and the toner image is transferred onto the sheet by imprinting of the opposite potential. The toner remaining on the surface of the photosensitive drum without being transferred to the paper by the transfer device is scraped off by the blade member and collected by the cleaning device. Thereafter, the surface of the photoconductor drum is uniformly irradiated with light by a static eliminator to eliminate the residual potential.
[0004]
The above-mentioned photosensitive drum has a photosensitive layer of several tens of μm formed on the surface of a cylindrical substrate, and the photosensitive layer is made of an organic photosensitive member, a selenium arsenic photosensitive member, amorphous silicon (hereinafter a- (Described as Si). Organic photoreceptors are relatively inexpensive, but are prone to wear, have a short life, and require frequent replacement. Further, the selenium arsenic photoreceptor has a longer life than the organic photoreceptor, but has a drawback that it is troublesome to handle because it is a toxic substance. On the other hand, the a-Si photoreceptor is more expensive than the organic photoreceptor, but has recently been attracting attention from the viewpoint of environmental measures and excellent total cost due to its harmless substance, easy handling, and long life. Demand is increasing.

The a-Si photoreceptor generally has a configuration and characteristics as shown in FIG. As shown in FIG. 3A, the a-Si photoreceptor has a
[0006]
Further, the characteristics of the a-Si photoconductor change as shown in FIG. 3B depending on the thickness of the photoconductive layer and the like. When the thickness of the photoconductive layer is about 80 μm (A in the figure), a high surface potential can be obtained, but the influence of the temperature becomes large. When the thickness of the photoconductive layer is set to about 30 μm, it is hardly affected by temperature, but has a characteristic that dark decay is fast because the film is thin, and the surface potential cannot be maintained high and the surface potential can be suppressed low. .
[0007]
Further, in an electrophotographic image forming apparatus using an a-Si photoreceptor, a phenomenon called image deletion sometimes occurs depending on the use environment. The image deletion is a phenomenon in which an image is blurred or the periphery of the image is blurred. The cause of the image deletion is that the moisture in the air is adsorbed on the surface of the photoreceptor drum and the surface resistance is reduced, and the electric charge of the formed electrostatic latent image flows in the circumferential direction to lower the potential or to reduce the boundary. It is thought to be unclear.
[0008]
The reason why moisture is adsorbed on the surface of the photosensitive drum is that the molecular structure of the surface of the a-Si photosensitive member has a structure that easily adsorbs moisture. Further, when the image forming process is repeated on the surface of the photoreceptor, ozone generated by corona discharge of the charging device reacts with paper powder and the like to generate discharge products such as nitrate ions and ammonium ions, which are generated on the surface of the photoreceptor. The effect of adsorbing moisture on the surface is considered. If the drum is placed in a high-humidity environment under such conditions, a phenomenon occurs in which the surface resistance of the photoreceptor decreases to a level at which a moisture image flows on the drum surface.
[0009]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
In a conventional image forming apparatus using an a-Si photoreceptor, as a measure for stabilizing performance and preventing image deletion, a drum heater is provided inside the photoreceptor drum to heat it, and the surface is always maintained at a constant temperature. Attempts have been made to prevent the adsorption of moisture in the air. However, as the necessity of dealing with environmental problems increases, it is becoming increasingly necessary to reduce power consumption during standby and use of the image forming apparatus. In the control of the heater provided on the photoconductor drum, it is required that the power consumption be reduced by effective control in consideration of environmental conditions and characteristics of the a-Si photoconductor, instead of always operating the heater.
[0010]
Accordingly, the present invention provides an image forming apparatus using an a-Si photoreceptor, in which a temperature detecting unit and a humidity detecting unit are provided to measure the temperature and humidity of the environmental atmosphere in which the image forming apparatus is placed, and to detect the drum at an appropriate timing. An object of the present invention is to provide an economical apparatus that operates a heater to reliably prevent image deletion and the like without lowering work efficiency, and that reduces power consumption.
[0011]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In the image forming apparatus of the present invention, an a-Si photosensitive drum is used for an image forming section, and a charging device, a developing device, a transfer device, a cleaning device, a static eliminator, and the like are arranged around the drum to form an image. Is The photoconductor drum is formed in a cylindrical shape, and a drum heater is provided along an inner surface thereof. A humidity detecting unit and a temperature detecting unit are provided inside the image forming apparatus, and always detect the humidity and the temperature in the atmosphere of the environment where the image forming apparatus is installed. The signals from the respective detecting means are sent to a control means for controlling the operation of the image forming apparatus, and are judged to control the on / off operation of the drum heater.

Next, embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings. Although the embodiment is a copying apparatus as an image forming apparatus, the present invention is not limited to this, and various types of images such as a laser beam printer, an LED printer, and a facsimile that employ an a-Si photosensitive member as an electrophotographic process. Applicable to forming equipment.

What is predicted from the experimental results is that a difference occurs between the actual environmental temperature and humidity and the measured value of the temperature / humidity detecting means provided in the
[0036]
Although it is conceivable to provide the temperature detecting means and the humidity detecting means near the photoconductor drum, it is expected that accurate measurement will be difficult due to the presence of air flow, which may cause differences between locations and severe changes. You. Therefore, it is considered that the position shown in FIG. 1 is effective as a place for installing the temperature / humidity detecting means in which the space is easily secured and the design is convenient, and the external environment temperature is most approximately reflected. . However, it is difficult to predict the delay and some differences with respect to the temperature and humidity changes in the actual environment. Therefore, when the absolute humidity for operating the
[0037]
Therefore, the boundary value of the drum heater operation was reexamined. Most image forming apparatuses are used in air-conditioned offices and the like, and it is empirically known that no image deletion occurs in such a comfortable environment. Environmental conditions there are generally expected to be 60% or less at 25 ° C or less. From FIG. 10, the absolute humidity at 25 ° C./60% is 13.4 g / m. 3 It is. Therefore, the operating condition of the
[0038]
In this confirmation experiment, image deletion did not occur, and almost satisfactory results were obtained. The set value of the absolute humidity for operating the drum heater and the control temperature at the time of operation are affected by the characteristics of the photoreceptor and the configuration of the machine, and may be set higher than this value. However, considering that the environment in which the image forming apparatus is used is generally an air-conditioned office, even if the drum heater is operated only when the environment deviates from the environment, economic effects such as reduction in power consumption can be obtained. It is thought that it can be obtained sufficiently. In particular, a great effect can be obtained in a season in which the humidity decreases. Furthermore, in consideration of the risk of image deletion and the economical efficiency, the setting values of the absolute humidity and temperature for optimal operation of the drum heater may be changed in accordance with the environment and season of the installation room. It is also possible to provide a setting mode in which optimal setting values corresponding to the respective settings are set in consideration of the above, so that the user can select the setting mode.

【The invention's effect】
From the experiments described above, in the electrophotographic image forming apparatus using the a-Si photoreceptor, the drum heater was always turned on in order to keep the photoreceptor temperature constant and to prevent image deletion. With thin-film type a-Si photoreceptors that are not easily affected by temperature characteristics, it is possible to predict the environment where there is a risk of image deletion from temperature and humidity, and it is possible to operate the drum heater only when necessary It is. In addition, it can be seen that there is no problem even if the drum heater is stopped because heat is applied to the photosensitive drum during the copying operation. Therefore The image forming apparatus of the present invention operates according to the detection result of the ambient temperature and humidity of the environment where the image forming apparatus is placed. When the drum heater control is used, image deletion can be reliably prevented and power consumption can be reduced.
