現在ではLED照明の寿命は白熱電球の約40倍と長く、そのため球切れなどのメンテナンスが激減するため、数多くの照明を用いる遊園地や高天井の倉庫、工場、体育館、商業施設などに設置すれば維持管理費を抑える効果が大きい。
しかしながら既設照明器具と同等の明るさ性能を求めた場合、価格や設置コストを考慮すると設置適合性には問題があった。
その大きな要因としてはLEDが発する熱がLED照明の性能と寿命に大きく影響を及ぼすためLED照明器具本体の放熱が重要な課題となっている。
そのため明るさ性能に比例し放熱部は大きく、同様に内蔵された電源も重くなり、その結果LED照明本体が大きく重くなっていた。
そのため、高天井の倉庫や工場、体育館などに用いられていた軽量な水銀灯の代わりに設置する場合には頑丈な取り付け工事等が必要であった。
