Description
ン等に用いられる光結合器に関し、特に半導体光アンプ
とスプリッタ、コンバイナ等を組み合わせた光スイッチ
に用いる光結合器に関する。
ー、入出力装置等を結合するデータ転送経路としては電
気配線が一般的に用いられている。しかしながら近年の
コンピュータの動作速度の高速化に伴い、これらのデー
タ転送容量の増大が必要不可欠となっている。さらに最
近のコンピュータでは複数のプロセッサをコンピュータ
内に実装し、これらをネットワークで結合して並列化を
図る検討が盛んに行われているが転送経路の容量の拡大
が大きな課題となっている。また通信用装置においても
交換機の要求スループットの増大に伴い、通信装置内ボ
ード間、あるいは通信装置架間で転送する容量の拡大へ
の要求が高まっている。結合装置数の増大、容量の拡大
に伴い電気配線を増やすことで対応してきたが配線数は
限界にきている。
代わり光を用いる光ネットワーク技術が盛んに研究され
ている。中でも光でデータ転送経路を実現するため構成
の一つである光スイッチは特に重要である。
導波路を形成しLiNbO3 の電気光学効果を利用した
光スイッチ、石英導波路の熱光学効果を利用した光スイ
ッチが規模の拡張性等の優位点から一般に開発が行われ
ている。
スイッチング電圧が数十ボルト必要であるため、この光
スイッチを駆動させるためのドライバに負担がかかる。
またR. Nagase 等のJournal of Lightwave Technology,
Vol. 12 No. 9 1994 pp. 1631-1639 に記されているよ
うに石英導波路型光スイッチでは1素子あたり1ワット
近い電力が必要であり、電力消費が大きいという問題が
ある。
光アンプのゲート機能を用いた光スイッチが提案されて
いる。この光スイッチの基本構成を図7に示す。各光送
信器11から光ファイバ5に出力された信号はスプリッ
タ13において分岐され半導体光アンプ10に入射す
る。
OFFを行なうゲートとして機能するため、任意の出力
させたいパスを選択し、このパスの半導体光アンプのみ
を駆動させることにより所望のパスの光受信器12にコ
ンバイナ14を通して増幅された信号を伝送することが
できる。
チは非常に単純な構成であるが、次のような欠点を有し
ている。すなわち、このタイプの光スイッチを構成する
ためにはスプリッタ13及びコンバイナ14が必要不可
欠である。スプリッタ及びコンバイナは一般にはファイ
バ融着型カプラが用いられているが、これらの損失は分
岐数が増えるに従って増大してしまうことが知られてい
る。これはカプラの分岐部分において分岐損失が本質的
に存在するためである。

れ1/8(=9dB)の信号パワーの劣化が生じる。即
ち、入力、出力の両方で18dBも劣化するため、半導
体光アンプで増幅しても受信器に入射される信号は非常
に弱いものとなる。
化に伴い、光スイッチの大規模化、高速化は必要不可欠
であるが、受信器の高速化を図るために要求される光受
信レベルを増加させる必要がある。しかしながらファイ
バ融着型カプラを用いたスプリッタ及びコンバイナを含
む構成では伝送速度及び大規模化を達成することが非常
に困難であり、実際には2×2、4×4レベルで数Gb
it/sの信号を扱えるに過ぎない。

ードの側面に1本のシングルモード導波路を斜めから接
続した例が報告されている。この構成では1本のマルチ
モード導波路の側面にテーパー形状の1本のシングルモ
ード導波路を設けることで分岐損失を低減しているが、
多数のシングルモード導波路を結合することは困難であ
る。

チの大規模化を図ることができる光結合器を提供するこ
とにある。
述した課題を解決するために以下のような特徴を有して
いる。

し、前記複数のシングルモード光導波路からの各々の信
号光のビーム径が前記マルチモード光導波路の出射端で
重なるように前記マルチモード光導波路の形状およびシ
ングルモード光導波路の配置が設定されていることを特
徴とする。

る径が、マルチモードファイバのコア範囲内であること
を特徴とする。
モード光導波路の幅が、前記マルチモード光導波路との
結合部近辺でテーパ状に拡大していることを特徴とす
る。
グルモード光導波路と光学的に結合する複数のシングル
モードファイバと、前記マルチモード光導波路と光学的
に結合するマルチモードファイバを備えていることを特
徴とする。
ングルモード光導波路と前記マルチモードファイバとの
なす角が、前記マルチモードファイバの最大受光角より
も小さいことを特徴とする。
石英系光導波路または半導体光導波路により構成されて
いることを特徴とする。
数のシングルモード導波路とマルチモード導波路が形成
され、複数のシングルモード導波路はマルチモード導波
路に光学的に結合されている。さらに複数のシングルモ
ードファイバと基板上の複数シングルモード導波路が結
合され、基板上のマルチモード導波路がマルチモードフ
ァイバに結合されている。
導波路とマルチモード導波路が結合されているため、従
来のファイバ融着型カプラ等において必然的に存在して
いた分岐損失が生じなくなる。これにより従来のコンバ
イナ部における損失を除去でき、ついては光スイッチ全
体の損失を低減することができる。すなわち光スイッチ
の受信感度の向上(すなわち伝送速度の高速化)及び光
スイッチの大規模化を図ることが可能となる。

上に形成されたマルチモード導波路とシングルモード導
波路である。シングルモードファイバ5から入射した信
号光はシングルモード導波路2を伝搬しマルチモード導
波路3に結合する。マルチモード導波路3から出射され
た信号光はマルチモードファイバ4を伝搬し受光器にお
いて検出される。
ド導波路2とマルチモード導波路3の結合部分について
説明する。第1の実施形態においてシングルモード導波
路とマルチモード導波路が平行となるように配置され端
面どうしが結合されている。本実施形態ではこれらの端
面同士を光学的に結合することで放射損失を低減させて
いる。
50μm 〜80μm であり、第1の実施形態でファイバ
との結合損失を低減するためにはマルチモード導波路幅
はコア径以下にすることが望ましい。この条件から、マ
ルチモード導波路に入力されるシングルモード導波路の
分岐数は制限される。
ドファイバとマルチモード導波路の径をそれぞれ80μ
m 、60μm とした場合を考える。半導体光導波路を用
いた場合、一般的に導波路幅としては1〜2μm が適当
である。よって分岐数は30〜60程度まで拡張するこ
とができる。しかしながら石英系の導波路を用いる場
合、シングルモードファイバとの結合損失をできるだけ
低減させるため、一般的にコア幅として4〜8μm の値
が用いられる。この場合、分岐数は8〜15程度となり
半導体光導波路に比べて分岐数が限られる。

4はマルチモードファイバ、5はシングルモードファイ
バ、1は基板、3、4は基板1上に形成されたマルチモ
ード導波路とシングルモード導波路を示している。シン
グルモードファイバ5から入射した信号光はシングルモ
ード導波路2を伝搬しマルチモード導波路3に結合す
る。マルチモード導波路3から出射された信号光はマル
チモードファイバ4を伝搬し受光器において検出され
る。
導波路3とシングルモード導波路2の接合部分について
説明する。図3は第2の実施形態のマルチモード導波路
3とシングルモード導波路2の接合部分を示す平面図で
ある。
波路2の端面から横方向における閉じ込めのないマルチ
モード導波路3の端面に入射した信号光は徐々にそのビ
ーム径6を広げながらマルチモード領域を伝搬する。こ
の際、マルチモード導波路3に入射した導波光のビーム
径がマルチモード導波路3に結合するマルチモードファ
イバ4の径におさまるようにマルチモード導波路3のマ
ルチモード伝搬領域の長さを設定し、かつ全てのシング
ルモード導波路2のポートからの入射光がマルチモード
導波路端面の同じ位置でマルチモードファイバ4と結合
するように設計されている。

ことで先の第1の実施形態における分岐数よりもさらに
分岐数を拡大することができる。この際、入射した導波
光のビーム径が、結合するマルチモードファイバ4のコ
ア径の範囲内におさまるようにマルチモード伝搬領域の
長さを設定し、かつ全てのポートからの入射光が同じ位
置でマルチモードファイバ4と結合するように設計する
ことにより、第1の実施例における分岐数よりも分岐数
を拡大することができる。この時、全てのシングルモー
ド光導波路とマルチモードファイバとのなす角は用いる
マルチモードファイバの最大受光角よりも小さくなるよ
うに設計することにより、結合効率を高めることができ
る。
モード光導波路の幅をマルチモード光導波路との結合部
近辺においてテーパ状に徐々に拡大させることにより、
シングルモード導波路を伝搬する光のスポットサイズが
大きくなり、マルチモード導波路へ入射した際の光の広
がりを小さくすることができる。これにより低結合損失
で入力ポートの数を増やすことが可能となるため、本発
明の光結合器の構成には非常に有効である。

の方策であるが、第3の実施形態は分岐数の少ない場合
に本発明を適用した例である。図中、4はマルチモード
ファイバ、5はシングルモードファイバであり、基板1
上には2本のシングルモード導波路2が形成され、その
一部分が近接して配置して方向性結合器7が設けれられ
ている。方向性結合器も2つのモードが伝搬するマルチ
モード導波路の一種であるため、本発明の第1、第2の
実施形態と基本原理は同じであり出力側すなわち方向性
結合器7とマルチモードファイバ4と結合させることに
より分岐数2の光結合器として作用する。

る。この異方性エッチングを利用してV字状の溝等を形
成しこれをファイバガイドとして用いる。異方性エッチ
ングにより形成された溝は非常に高精度であるため、フ
ァイバと導波路を無調整でかつ高い効率で結合させるこ
とができる。本発明ではマルチモードファイバや多数の
シングルモードファイバを導波路と結合させる必要があ
るためこの無調整結合技術は素子の作製をする上で非常
に有効である。

ッチの受信感度の改善及び大規模化が簡単に可能とな
る。
InGaAsP系の半導体導波路、石英膜にP、B、G
e、Ti等をドーピングした石英導波路の他にLiNb
O3基板にTiを熱により拡散させた導波路、PMMA
等の有機化合物を用いた導波路、等様々な方法がある。

作製し評価した。従来のファイバカプラ等を用いると8
分岐では9dBの分岐損失が発生するが、本発明の構成
では素子全体の挿入損失として1dB以下の値を得るこ
とができた。この値には導波路自体の伝搬損失やファイ
バとの結合損失も含まれているため、分岐損失はほとん
ど発生していないと考えられる。

した複数の波長の信号光はAWGの出力側で波長毎に別
の導波路に出力される。この導波路を本発明の光結合器
15の入力部とし、半導体光アンプ10をAWG9と光
結合器15の間に挿入すると、半導体光アンプのゲート
機能を利用することにより、所望の波長の信号だけを低
損失で出力側のマルチモードファイバ4に結合させ、光
受信器12により検出することができる。すなわちこの
構成により波長選択機能が行なえる。

路に集光されるため、この部分における原理的な分岐損
失を生じない。よって回路が大規模化しても、分岐損失
が発生しないため、全体の挿入損失は増加せず、受信器
における受信感度の低下が生じない。

下段が本発明の光結合器を適用した16分岐の光スイッ
チであり、それぞれの構成の下に信号の強度レベルを示
している。図中11は発光素子、5はシングルモードフ
ァイバ、13はスプリッタ、10は半導体光アンプ、1
4はコンバイナ、12は受光素子を示している。
プリッタ部13とコンバイナ部14において12dBの
損失が発生する。このとき半導体光アンプ10で信号を
10dB増幅しても受信器側では−14dBmの受信レ
ベルにとどまる。実際に10Gbit/sクラスの高速
信号を受信するためには−8dBm程度の受信レベルが
必要となるが、従来の構成の場合はこの値に届かない。

- 【請求項1】基板上に複数のシングルモード光導波路と
一本のマルチモード光導波路を有し、前記複数のシング
ルモード光導波路からの各々の信号光のビーム径が前記
マルチモード光導波路の出射端で重なるように前記マル
チモード光導波路の形状およびシングルモード光導波路
の配置が設定されていることを特徴とする光結合器。 - 【請求項2】前記シングルモード光導波路から前記マル
チモード光導波路に入射する信号光の前記マルチモード
光導波路の出射端面における径はマルチモードファイバ
のコア範囲内であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の
光結合器。 - 【請求項3】前記シングルモード光導波路の幅は前記マ
ルチモード光導波路との結合部近辺でテーパ状に拡大し
ていることを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の光結
合器。 - 【請求項4】前記複数のシングルモード光導波路と光学
的に結合する複数のシングルモードファイバと前記マル
チモード光導波路と光学的に結合するマルチモードファ
イバを備えていることを特徴とする請求項1〜3のいず
れかに記載の光結合器。 - 【請求項5】前記複数のシングルモード光導波路と前記
マルチモードファイバとのなす角は前記マルチモードフ
ァイバの最大受光角よりも小さいことを特徴とする請求
項1〜4のいずれかに記載の光結合器。 - 【請求項6】前記光導波路は石英系光導波路または半導
体光導波路により構成されていることを特徴とする請求
項1〜5のいずれかに記載の光結合器。
