More specifically, in the developing process, the density (supply amount) of the toner that adheres to the electrostatic latent image formed on the surface of the photosensitive drum 1 and visualizes the electrostatic latent image is constantly controlled to a constant value. Is done. That is, in the AIDC method, for example, a spot-shaped spot corresponding to a black reference pattern formed before or after a platen glass (not shown) is formed on a portion corresponding to a region other than the document image on the surface of the photosensitive drum 1. A reference latent image is formed and developed to obtain a reference image. Thereafter, the amount of toner adhered to the reference image is detected, and the toner concentration in the developer in the developing tank is constantly set according to the detection result. To this end, the amount of toner supplied to the developing device is controlled.

In addition to the normal (normal) development, in which the positively charged toner is applied to the surface of the negatively charged photosensitive drum without being irradiated with light from the surface of the photoreceptor drum, the LED array is reversed. This is also performed when reversal development is performed in which a negatively charged toner is attached from the developing device to the surface of the photoreceptor drum 1 irradiated with light from 26 to perform development.

As described above, the arrangement position of the light receiving element 28 in the longitudinal direction is selected to be a position corresponding to the longitudinal position of the LED chip 25 that emits light when the image forming operation is not performed. Therefore, at the time of detection, the entire LED array 26 does not need to emit light, so that power consumption can be reduced accordingly. In addition, the consumption of toner can be saved.

That is, the region formed between the end position of one original image and the start position of the next original image is irradiated with light from the LED array to remove the residual charge on the photosensitive drum 1. That means. On the other hand, the side erase means irradiating light from the LED array to both ends in the axial direction of the photosensitive drum 1 which also do not contribute to image formation, thereby removing residual charges on the photosensitive drum.

A casing to be housed, a detection unit disposed in the casing, for detecting the amount of light incident when the LED array emits light, and a writing unit for writing an image density control mark during non-image formation. Control means for controlling a light emission amount of the LED array based on a detection result by the detection means when the LED array emits light.
