Description: BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a liquid crystal device having a dummy electrode group provided on an outer peripheral portion of an image display area.

[Prior Art] As shown in FIG. 2, the conventional liquid crystal device has a structure in which no electrode is present on the outer peripheral portion of the image display area 6.

[Problems to be Solved by the Invention] However, in the above-described conventional technology, the liquid crystal 4 existing between the image display area 6 and the sealing material 3 is not driven,
On the other hand, since the liquid crystal 4 existing in the image display area 6 is driven, the state of the liquid crystal rapidly changes at the boundary between the driven liquid crystal and the non-driven liquid crystal. For this reason,
Partial differences occur in the voltage-light transmittance characteristics of the liquid crystal in the image display area, causing uneven contrast.

FIG. 3 shows the difference between the voltage-light transmittance characteristics. In contrast to the voltage-light transmittance characteristic 12 at the center of the image display area, the voltage-light transmittance characteristic 13 at the periphery of the image display area is:
It can be seen that there is a shift to a direction requiring a larger applied voltage. FIG. 3 shows characteristics of a normally black system in which the light transmittance is low when no voltage is applied and gradually increases as the voltage is applied. Therefore, when the display is performed by the normally black method, the peripheral portion becomes darker than the central portion. In the normally white mode, in which the light transmittance is low when no voltage is applied and the light transmittance gradually increases as the voltage is applied, the periphery becomes brighter than the center. In either case, there is a problem that contrast unevenness occurs between the peripheral portion and the central portion, and the display quality is significantly reduced.

[Means for Solving the Problems] The present invention has a liquid crystal driving electrode group in which liquid crystal is sandwiched between a pair of substrates and a plurality of liquid crystal driving electrodes used for image display are arranged on the substrates. In a liquid crystal display, a dummy electrode group including a plurality of dummy electrodes not used for image display is formed on an outer peripheral portion of the liquid crystal drive electrode group, and a liquid crystal corresponding to the dummy electrode group includes the liquid crystal drive electrode. The liquid crystal device is driven at a lower voltage than the driving voltage of the liquid crystal present on the group, and is sequentially driven at a lower voltage from the side closer to the liquid crystal driving electrode group toward the outer peripheral portion of the substrate.

FIG. 4A is a timing chart of a drive signal (hereinafter, referred to as a video display signal) applied to the liquid crystal drive electrode 5. FIGS. 4 (b) and 4 (c) are timing charts of the drive signal (hereinafter, referred to as a dummy signal) applied to the dummy electrode, and the dummy signal to which the signal of FIG. 4 (c) is applied. The electrodes are located on the outer periphery of the substrate as compared with those of FIG. 4 (b). According to the figure, the liquid crystal corresponding to the dummy electrode group is driven at a lower voltage than the liquid crystal corresponding to the liquid crystal drive electrode group, and is driven at a lower voltage toward the main part of the substrate. That is, the fourth

Therefore, the transition of the liquid crystal state between the image display area and the non-image display area including the dummy pixel group is smoothly performed, and it is possible to suppress the occurrence of contrast unevenness for an extremely long time as compared with the related art.

In the embodiment of the present invention, four rows and three columns of dummy electrodes are provided, but the number is not limited. However, it is better to increase the number of dummy electrodes, but since it greatly affects the screen size and cost of the liquid crystal device, it cannot be increased unnecessarily.
