Abstract

This embodiment relates to an adjustable base (10) for a bed. More specifically, the present embodiments relate to safety devices for adjustable bases. The safety device prevents access to the space or area between the articulated portion of the base (10) and the frame (14).

Description

This embodiment relates to an adjustable base for a bed. More specifically, the present embodiments relate to safety devices for adjustable bases. The safeguard prevents access to the space or region between the articulated portions of the base and the stationary frame.

Prior art articulated beds are typically operable by adjusting a head portion and movable foot portions. The head part is for lifting the head, eg for reading in bed. The movable foot portion allows the foot to be raised and lowered according to the user's sleeping posture, the user's reading posture, or any other posture desired by the user.

Referring to FIGS. 1-4B, various embodiments of adjustable bases with safety devices are shown. A simple embodiment provides a safety system formed by a barricade or barrier extending between articulated portions of the deck and the frame. Referring to FIG. 1, a perspective view of one embodiment of an adjustable base safety device is shown. Adjustable base 10 includes deck 12 and frame 14 . Deck 12 is operably connected to frame 14 . Mattresses are not shown for clarity. However, those skilled in the art will appreciate that the mattress is placed on and supported by the upper surface of deck 12 .

The frame 14 can include fixed portions and movable portions. The movable portion may be movable relative to the fixed portion of the frame 14 . The deck 12 can be connected to a moving part or a moving component and a fixed part of the frame. The deck moves with the movable portion of the frame. Other parts of the deck are fixed to the fixed portion of the frame 14 . For example, actuators and/or linkages may connect the articulating portion of deck 12 to frame 14 .

Frame 14 may be defined by a single structure or one or more sub-frame structures. Frame 14 can be defined in a number of ways, and the structure of the frame and/or deck is not limited. Any of the various portions of the deck may be individually or collectively adjustable for operation to adjust the mattress (not shown). Some non-limiting examples are provided in US application Ser. No. 16/047,725, incorporated herein by reference.

Deck 12 may be formed of a plurality of supports including head portion 20 , foot portion 22 and intermediate portion 24 . At least one of the portions 20 , 22 , 24 is movable or articulated relative to the frame 14 . In the illustrated embodiment, the head portion 20 is movable to elevate the head when, for example, the user desires a reading position. Alternatively, the foot portion 22 is shown movable to lift the foot or adjust to a comfortable position for reading or other relaxing activities. Additionally, in some embodiments, the middle portion 24 of the deck may be fixed relative to the frame 14 . This ensures that the middle portion 24 of the deck does not rise or move relative to the frame 14 .

Each of the one or more portions 20, 22, 24, 26 of the deck may be pivotally connected to each other by a hinge structure, e.g., to pivotally connected subframes. . Deck portions 20 , 22 , 24 may also be pivotally connected to frame 14 of deck 12 and may be movable toward or away from frame 14 .

With respect to movement or articulation, the deck 12 or portions of the deck 12 may be movable, for example, between a flat, unbent position and the fully flexed position shown. The fully flexed position can be used as the maximum motion position away from the unbent position for sizing the barrier portion 40 . Referring to frame 14, frame 14 may be formed of at least one member 30 defining a substantially rectangular shape. Frame 14 may be inboard, outboard, or aligned with deck 12 . In a simple embodiment, multiple members 30, 32, 34 are shown. The frame has two vertical members extending in the head-to-toe direction of the bed and two horizontal members perpendicular to the vertical members. An opening or open area is defined within the perimeter of the member. In a simple embodiment there are four members that can be combined to form at least one member. Additional members not shown may be utilized, such as members in the head portion 20 of the frame 14 . Members 30, 32, 34 are generally fixed and may be connected together by fasteners or other structure, or may be welded or permanently connected together to define at least one member.

Members 30, 32, 34 may have a variety of cross-sectional shapes, such as angle-iron structural shapes or other open (unenclosed) cross-sectional shapes. Alternatively, the frame members may be closed cross-sectional shapes such as square, rectangular, circular, or other such closed shapes. The frame members may all be of the same shape or cross-section, or may be of different cross-sections, for example between longitudinal and transverse directions. As noted above, rim 14 may be defined by one or more sub-frames that define rim 14 . Frame body 14 may be formed of any upper sub-frame and lower sub-frame. One of the upper frame and the lower frame defines a support structure to allow pivoting from the one of the upper frame and the lower frame. The frame 14 may include actuators or link structures. Such actuators or linkages may be connected to fixed portions of frame 14 or may be connected to deck 12 to move portions of deck 12 .

One or more optional legs 38 may depend from at least one member. Legs 38 provide support and lift frame 14 off the ground below. Legs 38 may be formed in one or more sections to provide height. Although leg 38 is shown as being cylindrical, the cross-sectional shape may be continuous or may vary along the axial direction of leg 38 . Similarly, the cross-sectional shape may be a shape other than circular that varies in the axial direction of the leg, or a shape other than circular that does not vary in the axial direction of the leg.

In some embodiments, the frame 14 may be placed on an existing bed accessory. For example, if the user has an existing bed frame such as slats and/or box springs that the user wishes to use, the frame 14 can be placed over such bed accessories without the use of the legs 38. obtain. Frame 14 is sized to have a vertical dimension. Barricade section 40 extends between frame 14 and deck 12 . Barricade 40 may be formed of various materials and may be of various forms.

For example, the barricade section 40 may be made of an elastomeric material. An elastomeric material may be defined as any material that can return to its original shape when a deforming force is removed, such as natural or synthetic rubber. Elastomeric materials also include, but are not limited to, cloth, vinyl, plastic, and anything that stretches such that deck 12 expands when separated from frame 14 . Barricade 40 may also be formed of foam, polymer, or any combination of these materials.

In some embodiments, the elastomer can be an elastomeric fabric defined by a fabric having a proportion of elastomeric fibers. For example, the elastomeric fabric may have an elastomeric fiber content of 10% or more to provide the desired amount of elongation. Barricade 40 allows a certain amount of elongation or a certain amount of deformation. Barricade portion 40 may provide about 50% to about 300% elongation from undeformed length, or a 3-fold increase from undeformed length.

The amount of stretch can be used to size the barrier to the size of the gap between the deck and the framing. For example, but not limited to, a 12 inch barricade section at 100% extension may be utilized for a 24 inch fully flexed gap. The rate of extension may vary. Therefore, the rate of elongation may be used to size the barricade 40 . Generally, the barricade 40 is sized in the direction of the deck 12 and frame 14 such that the length of the unextended barricade 40 is less than the fully bent gap size or the maximum gap size. can be made

Various treatments may be included in the barricade section 40 . For example, the barricade may include a fire resistant (FR) treatment. The refractory treatment can be provided by the type of fiber or material used, chemical treatment, or a combination. For example, various acrylics or Kevlar may have chemicals or fibers that may have spray-on as well as bath-on applications. In other embodiments, a backing sheet of refractory material may be applied to the barricade section 40 . Also, the barricade 40 may have an amount of glass inclusion that acts as a fire barrier. These products and applications may be used individually or in combination. The fire resistant material should be able to pass known flame resistance tests suitable for bedding products, such as those found in 16 CFR Sections 1632 and 1633, for example.

Additionally, the barricade 40 may be provided with other antimicrobial treatments. For example, antimicrobial agents may control mold and/or bedbugs, as non-limiting examples. Anti-microbial agents may also include anti-fungal agents and/or biocides.

Still referring to FIG. 1, a simple embodiment provides a barricade section 40 connected along the bottom of the deck 12, to the inside of the frame 14, e.g., to the inner surface or along the inner edge. there is However, as shown in other embodiments, the barricades 40 may be connected in other ways.

Referring to Figure 2, an alternative embodiment is shown. The structure of the adjustable base 110 is generally similar to the adjustable bases in the previous embodiments. Referring to FIG. 3, a further embodiment is provided. In this embodiment, the adjustable base 210 is again of similar construction to the adjustable bases of the first and second embodiments. According to a simple embodiment, the barricade section 240 is connected along the upper edge or top surface of the deck 12 and extends into the frame 14 . Further, according to any of the embodiments of FIGS. 1-3, barricade sections 40, 140, 240 may be permanently fixed to deck 12 and/or framing 14 and removably connected. good too. In some embodiments, the upper and/or lower ends of barricade 40 may be connected to a covering or pad that extends around the edge of deck 12 or the edge of rim 14 . Such coverings or pads may be removably attached to framing 14, deck 12, or both.

With further reference to Figures 4A and 4B, a further embodiment is shown in perspective view. While FIGS. 1-3 show a barricade 40 extending between the fixed portion of the frame 14 and the deck 12, other embodiments include a barricade 40 positioned across an opening in the frame 14. can provide. The safety device of claim 2, further comprising the barricade extending between the bottom of the adjustable deck and the rim. The safety device according to claim 3, wherein the barricade section is connected to the inside of the frame. 4. A safety device according to claim 3, wherein the barricade is connected to the outer edge of the frame. 4. The safety device of claim 3, wherein the barricade extends from the upper edge of the adjustable deck to the frame. 2. The safety device of claim 1, wherein the barricade section is removably connected to at least one of the adjustable base and the frame. 2. Safety device according to claim 1, wherein the barricade part is a fabric (23). 9. Safety device according to claim 8, wherein the fabric (23) is either stretchable or foldable. 2. The safety device of claim 1, wherein the barricade is one of vinyl, plastic, or fabric. 2. The safety device of claim 1, further comprising a second barricade member extending across said rim between at least one of said perimeter members. 2. The safety device of claim 1, further comprising at least one actuator connected to said frame. 13. The safety device of claim 12, further comprising at least one linkage on said frame. A method of protecting a space between an articulated base of a bed and a frame (14), comprising:
articulating the deck (12) from the first position to the second position;
expanding the barricade (140) from a first barricade orientation to a second barricade orientation during said articulated flexion;
access to a space between the articulated base and the frame is blocked by the barricade;

said adjustable deck having at least a head portion (20), a foot portion (22) and at least one intermediate portion (24) therebetween;
at least one of the head portion, the intermediate portion, or the foot portion may be movable relative to the frame;
the barricade extends across an opening defined by the perimeter of the frame;
A safety device for the adjustable base (10).
