産業汚染または自然発生に起因する重金属(Pb、Hg、Asなど)による水源の汚染は、環境に壊滅的な影響を及ぼし、人間の健康に重大な脅威をもたらす可能性がある。産業廃棄物の排出物には、水溶性の高い重金属が含まれており、該重金属は、水流に流入して耕作土壌に吸収性の蓄積をもたらし、また、飲料水の水質を維持するための除去に技術的な課題をもたらす。重金属への長期暴露または許容濃度を超える摂取は、深刻な人間の健康障害、または死にさえつながる可能性がある。危険な重金属への人間の曝露を制限するための世界的な規制努力が確立されており、金属濃度を効果的に微量レベル(<5ppb)まで低減することは、今日まで重要な課題である1。
主にランタニド(Ln)金属とスカンジウム(Sc)およびイットリウム(Y)とからなる希土類元素(Rare earth elements)(REEs)は、REEsを技術開発に不可欠なものにする特有の特性を備えた化学的に類似した元素である。具体的には、REEsは、エネルギー、電子機器、および防衛産業における需要の着実な増加を基としているだけでなく、供給市場の不安定性もあり、強く望まれている。2015年、米国地質調査所は、世界のREE埋蔵量は合計1億3000万トンと推定し、主なREE埋蔵量は主に中国(42%)とブラジル(17%)とによって管理されており、米国が所有しているのはわずか1.3%である。2012年においては、中国が世界のREE市場の95%を支配している22。安定した米国のサプライチェーンの欠如、並びに、REEsが採掘される環境的および社会的な懸念だけでなく、外国のREE依存による国家安全保障への懸念も、REEsを回収およびリサイクルするための新技術の開発への多大な努力を促している23。
本開示は、水性流体流から金属を除去する方法であって、水性流体流を、式I:

固形吸着材は、1)ポリアミン化合物のアミン官能基と、ポリアルデヒド化合物のアルデヒド部分との間の縮合反応によるイミン中間体の形成;続いて、2)上記イミン中間体を水素化ホウ素ナトリウムで還元して、アルキルアミンを形成する、との手順を包含するワンポット2段階の手順で調製され、還元的アミノ化プロセスとしても知られている(図1)。この2段階のシーケンスは、PEIなどのポリアミン化合物をアルデヒドユニットを介して共有結合でロックし、固形吸着材を形成する。ステップの間に、イミン含有化合物をテトラヒドロフランで洗浄し、乳鉢乳棒を使用して粉砕して、非反応性アミン出発物質を除去する。対象化合物をろ過により分離し、水、メタノールおよびジエチルエーテルで洗浄して、水素化ホウ素ナトリウムの残留物と可溶性有機種とを除去する。両方の反応は、空気または湿気を排除するための予防措置を講じることなく、撹拌条件下で室温にて行われる。使用されるアルデヒド化合物は、市販されているものであってもよく、または標準的な実験室の方法によって合成されてもよい。これらの化合物は、直接アルキル化条件によっても形成され得る。最終的な吸着材は、ふるいにかけるかまたは粉砕して、所望の粒子サイズにすることができる。
ポリアルデヒドP-デンドリマー(1当量)をテトラヒドロフラン(0.005~0.1M濃度)に溶解し、丸底フラスコ内で空気に開放して撹拌した。ポリアミン化合物(0.1~1.0当量)をテトラヒドロフラン(0.2~0.5M)に溶解し、上記の混合物に素早く添加して、5秒から1時間のどこかで形成し始める白色の固体を生成した。反応物を2時間撹拌したままにした。イミン中間体をろ過し、テトラヒドロフランで数回洗浄し、次に乳鉢と乳棒で粉砕して粉末にした。粉末を新しい丸底フラスコに移し、テトラヒドロフラン/メタノール(2:1の比率、0.001~0.1M)に分散させ、撹拌した。この混合物に過剰の水素化ホウ素ナトリウム(>5当量)を加え、5~24時間撹拌した。完了後、混合物をろ過し、水、メタノールおよびジエチルエーテルで洗浄し、乾燥させた(図2)。得られた化合物は、常温保存可能であり、保存のための予防措置は取らなかった。
吸着材合成の該アルデヒド成分は、2つ以上のアルデヒド官能基を持っている必要がある。アルデヒドは、単一または個別のポリアミン化合物のアミン官能基と反応して、不溶性のイミン化合物を生成させることができる。イミン化合物は、架橋ポリマーのような結合のネットワークで構成されているが、アルデヒドユニットは、複数の結合を介して材料内にランダムに分散している。吸着材は、さまざまなポリアルデヒド化合物、およびそれらとポリアミン化合物との反応から調製された。いずれかの成分を変更すると、吸着材の形態および容量に影響を与える可能性がある。
固形吸着材のポリアミン成分は、アルデヒド成分との反応のために2以上のアミン官能基を有してもよい。アミンは、市販されており、固形吸着材の合成に費用効果がある。この方法で固形吸着材を製造するために使用されるアミンは、これらに限定されるものではないが、エチレンジアミン、ジエチレントリアミン、テトラエチレンペンタミン、ならびに、線状および分枝状のポリエチレンイミンである。追加の官能基を有する他のアミン化合物を使用して、記載された方法により固形吸着材を合成することもできる。
以下の用語は、当業者によって十分に理解されると考えられるが、以下の定義は、現在開示されている主題の説明を容易にするために記載されている。
6.1.P-デンドリマー/低分子量ポリアミン吸着材
すべての溶媒および試薬は、試薬グレードであり、受け取ったままの状態で使用した。薄層クロマトグラフィー(TLC)分析は、EMD Chemicalから購入したシリカゲルプレート(シリカゲル60、F254)で実行した。1HNMRおよび31PNMRスペクトルは、Bruker Avance(1Hの場合は300 MHz、31Pの場合は121 MHz)で記録した。化学シフトは、内部標準として残留溶媒シグナルを使用して、百万分率(ppm)として報告する(CHCl3、1HNMRのδ= 7.26 ppm)。1HNMRのデータは、化学シフト(δ、ppm)、多重度(s =シングレット、d =ダブレット、t =トリプレット、dd =ダブレットのダブレット、m =マルチプレット)、結合定数(Hz)、および積分として表した。見つかったピークの化学シフトは、31PNMRスペクトルで報告した。フーリエ変換赤外スペクトルは、PerkinElmer Spectrum 100FT-IR分光計にてニートサンプル(ATR FT-IR)で取得した。走査型電子顕微鏡(SEM)画像は、FEI Quanta 200可変圧力走査型電子顕微鏡を使用して得られた。熱安定性の測定は、メトラートレドの熱重量分析装置(TGA)にて、空気雰囲気下で1000℃まで5℃/分のステップを使用して実施した。77Kでの窒素収着等温線は、Micromeritics ASAP2020装置を使用して得られた。測定前に、サンプルを120℃で6時間脱気した。表面積は、13.5Åと推定される窒素分子の表面積を仮定して決定した。二酸化炭素収着等温線は0℃で得られた。元素分析は、Elemental Analyzer Flash 2000 C/H/N/S機器で実施した。
吸着材の調製は、市販のポリアミンを使用して、空気雰囲気下で丸底フラスコ内で実施した。各P-デンドリマー、およびポリアミンの吸着材の調製を最適化した。たとえば、1-G0、およびTEPA(1-G0-TEPAと呼ばれる)から調製された吸着材の合成は、次のように進行する:
50mLの丸底フラスコに、ヘキサ(4-ホルミルフェノキシ)シクロトリホスファゼン1-G0(0.5g、0.58mmol、1当量)およびテトラヒドロフラン(10mL、0.06M)を加えた。すべての固形物が溶解するまでフラスコを加熱し、空気に開放して撹拌した。温かいうちに、3mLのテトラヒドロフラン中のTEPA(0.55g、2.9mmol、5当量)の溶液を上記の撹拌混合物に急速に(5秒未満で)加えた。10秒未満で、白色の固体が形成し、1時間撹拌した(または撹拌棒が凍結されている場合はそのままにした)。次いで、固体を真空ろ過により単離し、テトラヒドロフラン(50mL)で洗浄し、乳鉢と乳棒で粉砕し、新しい100mLの丸底フラスコに入れた。固体を、空気に開放して撹拌しながら、40mLのテトラヒドロフランおよび20mLのメタノールに懸濁させた。この混合物に無水水素化ホウ素ナトリウム(430mg、12mmol、20当量)を室温で加え、反応物を窒素下で14時間撹拌したままにした。次いで、混合物を真空下でろ過し、得られた固体を50mLの蒸留水、50mLのメタノール、および25mLのジエチルエーテルで洗浄した。洗浄により白色粉末が生成され、これをさらに減圧下で乾燥させた結果、470mgの1-G0-TEPAが白色粉末として得られた。
PEIを使用した架橋吸着材の調製例:
50mLの丸底フラスコに、600MWの分岐PEI(2.78g、4.63mmol、2当量)およびテトラヒドロフラン(20mL、0.12M)を加えた。溶液が均一になるまでフラスコを加熱した。温かいうちに、5mLのテトラヒドロフラン中のヘキサ(4-ホルミルフェノキシ)シクロトリホスファゼン1-G0(2.0g、2.32mmol、1当量)の溶液を上記の撹拌混合物に急速に加えた。10秒未満で、白色の固体が形成され、1時間撹拌した。次いで、固体を真空ろ過により単離し、テトラヒドロフラン(50mL)で洗浄し、乳鉢と乳棒で粉砕し、250mLの新たな丸底フラスコに入れた。固体を80mLのテトラヒドロフランおよび40mLのメタノールに懸濁させ、無水水素化ホウ素ナトリウム(1.7g、46mmol、20当量)を室温で加えた。洗浄により白色粉末が生成され、これをさらに減圧下で乾燥させた結果、白色粉末として4.22g(90%収率)の1-G0/600PEIが得られた。
架橋吸着材複合材料の調製例:
2mLのアセトンおよび4.0mgのPVDF樹脂KynarUltraFlex(登録商標)Bを含有する溶液を、樹脂が完全に溶解するまでウォーターバスで超音波処理した。次いで、40mgのポリアミンP-デンドリマー吸着材を添加し、10分間超音波処理して完全に分散させた。次に、粘性のある混合物(10重量%の結合剤を含む)を、12.4mgの炭素長方形シートの表面に部分的に層状に塗布した。一旦アセトンが蒸発したら、厚くて白いポリマー層が得られるまで、さらにコーティングを施した。試験前に完全に乾燥するように、最終的な材料を1時間風乾した。カーボンシートにくっついた(bound to)ポリマー/樹脂の総量は合計5.2mgであった。複合材料はカーボンシートによく接着しており、この場合、適用した厚さは4.49mmであった。その厚さは、カーボンシートに塗布されたポリアミン吸着材/樹脂混合物の層の数に直接関係している。
本明細書で調製された固形吸着材は、CPMAS核磁気共鳴(NMR)イメージング、およびフーリエ変換赤外(FTIR)分光法によって特徴付けられ、還元的アミノ化プロセスを介したアルデヒドおよびアミン成分間の効果的な反応を確認した。吸着材の有機物含有量はC/H/N元素分析(EA)で測定し、熱安定性は熱重量分析(TGA)で測定した。材料の表面および形態の整合性(integrity)は、Z偏光共焦点顕微鏡法、走査型電子顕微鏡法(SEM)、および透過型電子顕微鏡法(TEM)で調べた。表面積および細孔径分布特性は、N2等温線によって決定した。本発明の開示では1つの固形吸着材が記載されているが、製造された他の固形吸着材についても同様の特性データが得られた。
CPMAS核磁気共鳴(NMR)
P-デンドリマーおよびポリアミン架橋を介して調製された吸着材は、ヒドロゲルとして作用する。ヒドロゲルは、親水性であり、水で著しく膨潤することの可能なポリマー材料である11。ここで調製された固形吸着材は、水にも、液体媒体(水性、有機性、酸性、塩基性)にも溶解しない。この材料は、ポリアミン化合物との水素結合によって水を吸収し、架橋マトリックスにチャネルを開いて水で満たす。たとえば、調製された吸着材は、吸着材1グラムあたり12.8gの水を取り込むことができた。ポリアルデヒドP-デンドリマー、またはポリアミンを変更することにより、固形吸着材の膨潤能力に影響を与える。さらに、これらの吸着材は、酸性および塩基性条件に対して非常に安定していることがわかった。材料を12N HClか、50wt% NaOHかのいずれかの水中に30日間浸漬した後、分解は観察されなかった。水による材料の膨潤は、水にさらされる吸着材の表面積を増加させることにより、吸着材の外部表面および内部表面の化学種が、溶解した汚染物質と反応する機会を与えてしまう。固形アミン吸着材は、主にエチレンジアミンの繰り返し単位(吸着材の質量の最大20wt%を占める)で構成されており、金属に対するキレート剤として機能することができる。
吸着材処理の前後の液体サンプルの重金属含有量を、同心ガラスネブライザー、衝突セル技術(CCT)、およびペルチェ冷却ガラススプレーチャンバーを備えた、サーモシリーズI誘導結合プラズマ質量分析計(ICP-MS)により測定した。各重金属液体サンプル、および混合重金属液体サンプルの吸着材の除去効率を、バッチ分離とクロマトグラフィー分離によって測定した。
水から重金属を結合、および除去する吸着材の傾向評価を、水銀および鉛について開始した。P-デンドリマー固形吸着材を用いてさまざまな充填(loading)レベルで、50ppmおよび500ppmの両濃度の、HgおよびPbのストック溶液を個別にバッチ処理した。吸着材をストック溶液に懸濁し、10時間撹拌し、ろ過し、処理した溶液の金属含有量をICP-MS分析で測定した。50ppmHg溶液を1g/Lの充填で吸着材により処理すると、95.6%のHgイオンが除去された(図11A)。吸着材の充填を5g/Lに増やすと、除去率は98.6%に増加した。より高い濃度では、500ppm溶液から1~5g/Lの充填で、99%を超える効率でHgを除去することができた(図11B)。Pb除去は、50ppmおよび500ppmの両方の溶液において、より効果的であり、すべての吸着材充填で99%を超える除去効率が観察された。水中のHgまたはPbの量は、安全であるとは見なされないため、99%を超える除去が常に望まれる、これは、5g/Lの充填量の吸着材で達成された。
水処理プロセスにとって、汚染された溶液に対する吸着材の初期接触時間からの急速な吸着が、非常に望ましい。pH7における50ppm濃度のHgおよびPbを、個別に吸着した場合の速度論的結果を図13に示した。HgおよびPbの両方で、固形吸着材による急速な吸着が観察された。1g/Lまたは5g/Lの吸着材充填レベルとは無関係に、Hgの55%およびPbの90%が、5分以内に除去された。30分後には、Hgの92%およびPbの>95%の除去が測定された。30分後には、金属濃度は5ppm未満に減少し、残りの微量金属の結合は拡散速度論によって遅くなった。HgおよびPbの吸着材への急速な結合は、架橋マトリックスにおける繰り返しエチレンジアミン単位で構成される吸着材の高度なキレート性によって説明できる。重要なこととして、この吸着材の膨潤挙動により、金属の表面結合と内部結合の両方を可能にする。
吸着に対する汚染水のpHの影響を、高酸性条件(pH2)から高アルカリ性条件(pH12)まで調査した。過酷なpH環境に対するこの吸着材固有の安定性(セクション3.1を参照)により、過酷な環境から金属を除去する機会が得られる。印象的なことに、該吸着材は、pH2~12までにおいて、HgおよびPbの除去に対して完全な活性(97~99%の除去)で動作するという結果を示した(図14)。多くの吸着材の場合、溶液のpHは、吸着材の除去能力に関して最も影響を与えるパラメータである。たとえば、低pH(<4.0)では、HgCl2は塩化物の種分化(speciation)とともにHg2+にイオン化する。より高いpH(>4.0)では、主な化学種は、Hg(OH)2である。通常、吸着材はこれらの種の1つに対して選択的であり、pHスペクトル全体で高い除去効率を提供しない。この驚くべき性能は、P-デンドリマー固形吸着材の強力なキレート効果を披露するものである。
各金属が50ppm(イオンの総濃度:300ppm)に調製されている混合金属イオン溶液を吸着材で処理して、結合に対する混合イオン競合性を評価した。HgおよびPbの除去効率が、混合金属環境で維持され、1g/Lの吸着材充填でCu、Co、Fe、およびNiの除去効率を大幅に上回っている結果が示された(図15)。該吸着材は、他の重金属汚染物質に対して66%の選択性でHgおよびPbを除去した。吸着材の充填を5g/Lに増やすと、Cu(77%)を除く、すべての金属の除去効率を90%以上にすることができた。この結果は、該吸着材が他の金属イオンの存在下でも、水源から有毒金属(HgおよびPb)を除去するのに効果的である可能性があることを示している。
固形吸着材は、重金属を吸着する能力、金属を選択的に放出する能力、および付随的な吸着試験にたいして再生する能力を有する。この能力は、効果的な重金属除去を維持しながら、吸着材を繰り返し再利用できるようにすることで、プロセスコストの削減につながる。このプロセスは、個々のイオン除去を通して、50ppmのPbおよびCu溶液で実証された(図16)。金属溶液を吸着材床に流し通した後、吸着材は>99%のPbおよび98%のCuを除去することがわかった。金属の結合した吸着材は、1N HClを添加して、吸着材から金属を引き剥がすことにより再生し、脱イオン化のために水で洗浄した。吸着材は、3サイクルにわたる吸着および再生で、>99%のPbおよび>93%のCuの除去効率を維持した。再生の有効性は、Cu結合吸着材(暗い)から遊離アミン吸着材(白)への劇的な色の変化によって視覚的に観察された(図17)。
この吸着材が、静的吸収ではなく、流れる液体から重金属を能動的に除去できるかどうかを測定するために、フロースルー実験を設計した。ガラスカラム(直径2インチ)に、2.0gの緩く詰めたP-デンドリマー吸着材を装填した。水中で50ppmとなるHgCl2400mL溶液を、30分後に溶液全体が吸着材を通過するように、約13.3mL/minの速度でカラムに添加した。吸着材の最上層は、溶液が通過するにつれて時間の経過とともにゆっくりと灰色に変わり、これは水銀の吸着を示していた(図18)。ろ過された水を収集し、ICP分光法で分析し、処理済み溶液のHgが0.1ppm未満であることを明らかにした。これは、99.8%の除去を示している。さらに、吸着材は、このフロースルー設計を用いて、13.3mL/minの流量により同じ効率(>99%の除去)で50ppmPbの溶液を除去できることがわかった。該吸着材は、濃縮された流水(50ppm)から飲料水用のEPA規制値を下回るまで、HgおよびPbを除去する能力があった。
ヒ素は、一般に、無機種As(V)またはAs(III)の形で水中に見出される。ヒ素は、凝固および凝集、沈殿、膜ろ過、イオン交換、ならびに吸着を含む、さまざまな手法を通じて、除去するのが特に難しいことが証明されてきた。たとえば、活性炭は、炭素1グラムあたり数ミリグラムのAsしか除去できなかったため、このアプローチは高価で実用的ではなかった。ヒ素は、地下水供給に高濃度で存在するため、このようなシステムからの除去は非常に重要となる。溶存As(V)およびAs(III)イオンは、地下水中の酸素種で飽和しており、アミンの封鎖によって除去することはできないが、これらのイオンは、酸化鉄表面に対して高い親和性を持っている。他の金属イオンを含有するモデル化された地下水溶液から、選択的にAs(V)イオンおよびAs(III)イオンの両方を容易に吸着できる材料を提供するために、酸化鉄を本開示の(our)固形吸着材のマトリックスに埋め込んだ。
酸化鉄は、水性FeSO4の浸透を介して、P-デンドリマー固形吸着材のポリマーマトリックス内に埋め込み可能であり、結果として、アミン配位を介して鉄分子の結合をもたらし、空気への曝露時に、Fe(II)種が酸化Fe(III)に酸化された。吸着材へのFe(III)酸化物の担持は、Fe(III)の酸化状態を示す白から赤みがかったオレンジへの色の変化によって、容易に視覚化された。FT-IRによるFe/PEI担持吸着材の分析において、Fe(III)酸化物の配位を示すシフトが見られた(図19、パネルA)。SEM分析では、RTIの官能化されていない固形吸着材と同様に、Feに担持された吸着材が、より大きな凝集体に凝集する不規則な粒子で構成されていることが示された(図19、パネルB)。酸分解研究の結果は、Fe/PEI吸着材のFe含有量が252mg/gであることを示した。
丸底フラスコに20mLの水を加え、その溶液を窒素ガスで3時間バブリングした。フラスコを70℃に加熱し、溶液を窒素雰囲気下に保ちながら、10.0gのFeSO4-7H2Oを加えた。鉄が溶解した後、6.0gのP-デンドリマー固形吸着材を添加し、混合物を3時間撹拌した。媒体中の固形物は完全に白からターコイズ色に変わった。反応混合物をろ過し、固体を12時間空気にさらし、オレンジ/赤に変色させて、Fe(II)種をFe(III)に酸化させた。残りの固形物を乳鉢と乳棒で粉砕し、1.0Lの水で洗浄して未結合の鉄を溶出し、50℃で24時間真空乾燥して、Fe/PEI吸着材を得た。
Fe/PEI吸着材によるAs除去効率のバッチ試験を、モデル化された粉砕ブライン水で実施し、該ブライン水は、pH7.5で、おおよそAs(III)(2,500μg/L)、As(V)(2,500μg/L)、B(15,000μg/L)、Mn(II)(2,500μg/L)、およびNaCl(1030mg/L)を含有し、すべての金属分析はICP-MSによって測定した。5g/Lの充填でFe/PEI吸着材を使用してブライン水を処理すると、12時間で96%のAs、および2.3%のMnが除去された(図20)。Fe/PEI吸着材は、B、およびNaCl種に対しては親和性を示さなかった。ブライン水を官能化されていない吸着材で処理すると、選択性が逆転し、99%のMn、および11.8%のAsが除去され、B、およびNaClに対する親和性はなくなった(図20)。Fe/PEI吸着材のアミン官能基の大部分はFe(III)酸化物に配位しており、Mnに結合できるアミンはほとんど残っていないため、吸着材はAs種に対して高度に選択的である。官能化されていないRTI PEI吸着材は、非常に活性の高いキレート剤であり、ブラインからMnを除去するのに驚くほど効果的であることが証明されている。
Fe/PEI吸着材の充填は、As除去効率に相関的な影響を与える。1g/Lを超える吸着材の充填により、バッチテストで90%を超える除去効率が得られた(図21)。充填を0.25g/Lに減らすと、75.5%のAs除去効率が維持された。Fe/PEI吸着材を使用して除去できるAsの量は、吸着材の鉄含有量に直接関連している。
バッチAs除去速度は、1g/Lの処理充填での吸着材における最初の接触時において急速であった(図22)。5分以内に、複合のAs種の60%以上が除去され、60分で75%のAs除去が達成された。接触時間を10時間まで延ばすと、Fe/PEI吸着材によるAs除去効率は93%になった。60分で75%のAsを除去した後、かなりの数のFe(III)酸化物活性部位が、Asイオンによって消費されていた。さらにAsイオンが薄まっていくにつれ、活性Fe(III)酸化物サイトの数が減少すると、拡散限界吸着(diffusion limited adsorption)を呈した。As除去の急速な反応速度は、吸着材技術を膜システムに付加するために必要なフロープロセスにとって非常に有望である。
さらに、吸着材のAs除去効率に対するブライン水のpHの影響を、バッチ試験によって調べた。印象的なことに、Fe/PEI吸着材は、高酸性(pH2において、90%除去効率)、および高塩基性(pH12において、99%除去効率)の条件で、As除去効率>90%を維持した(図23)。中性付近のpHで優勢なヒ素種は、As(III)の場合はHAsO2であり、As(V)の場合はH2AsO4 -、およびHAsO4 2-である。より高いpH値では、陰イオン性ヒ酸塩種が優勢であり、Fe(III)酸化物による除去のためのより高い結合値を提供する。重要なことは、Fe/PEI吸着材は、pH6~8の範囲内の一般的な地下水でAsを効果的に除去するということである。
この吸着材の2つの潜在的な適用経路としては、As飽和吸着材をごみ処理地に廃棄し交換するという、使い捨て材料とするもの、または、As飽和吸着材を繰り返し使用するために、吸着したAsを除去することによって再生させるという、再生吸着材とするもの、がある。どちらのシナリオでも、吸着材は飽和時にAsを浸出してはならない。初めに、200mLのAs、B、およびMnブライン水を1gのFe/PEI吸着材(5g/L充填比)で処理することにより、As浸出の可能性を調べた。12時間以上かけて、吸着材は、ブライン水から94.7%のAsを除去した。ろ過した吸着材を100mLの脱イオン水で洗浄すると、吸着材から約200μg/LのAsが浸出することが示されたが、1Lの脱イオン水洗浄後に収集した画分では、浸出したAsが、10μg/L未満に減少した。Fe/PEI吸着材は、ポリマーチャネルの膨潤によってブライン水を保持する。最初の洗浄水は、膨潤したポリマーに閉じ込められたブライン水に取って代わり、これが最初に浸出したAsを説明するものとなる。重要なこととして、吸着材は流水(flowing water)からは、Asを浸出させないことである。
セレン(Se)は、微量レベルでヒトの細胞機能において重要な役割を果たす、天然に存在する元素であるが、高用量では毒性になる。その有益な健康への影響のために、Seは、EPAによって、飲料水中においては50ppbレベルまでを許容されており、その濃度は厳密に管理されている。セレンは、一般的に農業活動、鉱業、産業廃棄物から、そして排煙脱硫を介して飲料水に入り込む12。健康リスクが最も高いセレンの最も一般的な形態は、無機亜セレン酸塩-Se(IV)、(SeO3 4-)、およびセレン酸塩-Se(VI)、(SeO4 2-)である。水性セレンを除去するために採用された技術は、凝固、イオン交換、膜ろ過、ならびに、生物学的および化学的還元を基礎としている。これら技術の普及は、高い運用コスト、有毒な化学的処理の必要性、および有毒な廃棄物の発生を理由に制限されてきた13。EPAが推奨する技術は、フェリハイドライトによるSeの沈殿を包含するが、この方法は、50ppb未満のSeを除去するには経済的ではない14。セレン除去用の吸着材としての酸化鉄の使用は、大きな注目を集めている13,15-18。酸化鉄ナノ粒子であるFe3O4は、溶液中での安定性、溶解性、分散効果が低いことが多く、酸化鉄をより実用的な形に変化させることが求められている19。1999年、Min および Heringは、Fe(III)をドープしたアルギン酸ゲルバイオポリマーを使用して、狭いpH範囲のSe(IV)を除去した20。2008年、Zhangらは、粒状活性炭にFe(III)酸化物をドープし、pH範囲2~8で5時間にわたって>90%のセレン除去を達成した21。セレン除去のための酸化鉄を用いた修飾ポリマーの使用は、私たちの知る限りでは報告されていない。
3種の水性無機セレンストック溶液:1)5000ppb Se(IV)、2)5000ppb Se(VI)、ならびに3)2500ppb Se(IV)および2500ppb Se(VI)を調製した。これらすべての溶液を5g/L充填の鉄官能化固形吸着材で処理すると、ICP-MSの検出限界を下回るSeが除去された(図24)。これは無機セレン除去に非常に有望である。2500ppb Se(IV)および2500ppb Se(VI)ストック溶液を未修飾の吸着材で処理すると、12時間で87%の除去効率が達成された。
混合REE溶液は、以下の組成物;一価イオン、Sc、La、Pr、Ce、Eu、Sm、Gd、Tb、Dy、Ho、Er、Yb、Lu、Nd、Th、Tm、Fe、K、Mn、およびMgの各30ppmで調製された。モデル化されたAMD REE溶液のpHは3.3であった。AMD液体(Fe、Mn、Mg、K)に一般的な共汚染物質が存在する場合のREE除去効率を調べるために、吸着材充填試験を実施した(図25)。このストック溶液を5g/L充填の固形吸着材で処理すると、Ndを除くすべてのREEが、100%除去されることがわかった。5g/Lの吸着材を充填すると、100%のFeが除去され、60%のMnが除去され、KまたはMgへの選択性はなかった。吸着材の充填を2g/Lに減らすと、Feが完全に除去され、REE吸着が減少した。ScおよびLaは、それぞれ20%が吸着され、残りのREEは、5~10wt%の効率で除去された。これは、ルイス酸性金属が吸着材により効果的に結合することを示している。吸着材の充填を0.5g/Lに減らすと、6%の除去効率でScおよびLaが除去され、他のREEは一切吸着されなかった。

- 前記水性流体流のpHが、約2.0~約12.0の間である、請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記水性流体流のpHが、約2.0~約12.0の間である、請求項2に記載の方法。
- 前記水性流体流が、都市廃水流体流である、請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記水性流体流が、工業廃水流体流である、請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記水性流体流が、飲料水流体流である、請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記水性流体流が、都市ごみ埋立地、水圧破砕、酸性鉱山排水、酸性鉱山スラッジ、または石炭火力発電所からの浸出液を含む、請求項1に記載の方法。

- 前記濃縮塩基性溶液が、約0.05~約2.0MのNaOH、または約0.05~約2.0Mのクエン酸アンモニウムである、請求項15に記載の方法。
