油中水型乳化化粧料は、外相が油系であるため、油特有のべたつきを感じる場合がある。油中水型乳化化粧料に、さっぱりとしてべたつきのない使用感を出すため、また、化粧持ちを向上させるために、油相にシリコーン油を配合することが行われている。しかし、シリコーン油は、他の炭化水素やエステル油などの一般的な化粧料油剤との相溶性が悪いため、均一に乳化することが困難である。
油中水型乳化化粧料の安定性を補うために油相の増粘剤として、有機変性粘土鉱物が用いられている。しかし、油相にシリコーン油を多く配合すると、有機変性粘土鉱物の増粘効果が効率的に発揮できず、粘度低下、相分離などの経時安定性に問題が生じる場合がある。
