Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an optical module manufacturing method suitable for performing photoelectric conversion with high efficiency, and an optical module.
As an optical module, a photoelectric conversion element that converts light energy and electric energy and an optical fiber are fixed to each other, and light propagates between the photoelectric conversion element and the optical fiber. In this photoelectric conversion module, a signal is converted from an optical signal to an electrical signal, or a signal is converted from an electrical signal to an optical signal. As an example of such a photoelectric conversion module, an optical fiber is fixed to a laser diode (LD: Laser Diode) and light emitted from the laser diode is propagated through the optical fiber, or an optical fiber is used as a photodiode (PD: Photodiode). The light that is fixed and emitted from the optical fiber is received by a photodiode.
In the optical module described in
Therefore, an object of the present invention is to provide an optical module manufacturing method and an optical module that can reduce the loss of light.
The present invention relates to a photoelectric conversion element having a light receiving and emitting part for receiving or emitting light, an optical fiber, and optically reflecting the core of the optical fiber and the light receiving and emitting part by internally reflecting light at a predetermined area on the surface. A light-transmitting resin coupled to the light-transmitting resin, wherein the light extends so that a longitudinal direction extends from an element surface of the photoelectric conversion element along a light-receiving / emitting surface where the light-emitting / emitting unit is exposed. An arrangement step of arranging one end of the fiber, a coating step of applying a light transmitting resin to a resin arrangement region including the light receiving / emitting surface on the element surface, and the light transmitting resin serving as the light receiving / emitting surface and the optical fiber A step of curing the light-transmitting resin in a state in contact with the one end of the photoelectric conversion element, wherein the photoelectric conversion element has a step in which the element surface is recessed in at least a part of an edge of the resin arrangement region The application The extent and is characterized in carrying out the coating so that the light transmitting resin at the edge of the step portion is stopped.
In this method of manufacturing an optical module, a step portion is provided on at least a part of the edge of the resin arrangement region. By the way, when uncured resin is applied to a base material, even when the surface is wet and spreads, the edge of the stepped portion tends to stop the resin from spreading due to surface tension. Therefore, according to such an optical module manufacturing method, the spreading of the light transmitting resin can be easily stopped at the edge of the step portion by the surface tension of the light transmitting resin in the coating process. For this reason, the region where the light-transmitting resin is applied can be accurately controlled by the edge of the step portion, and a step is provided at a portion where the flow of the resin should be stopped as in the optical module described in
The optical module of the present invention has a photoelectric conversion element having a light emitting / receiving unit that receives or emits light, and a longitudinal direction along the light receiving / emitting surface where the light receiving / emitting unit is exposed from the element surface of the photoelectric conversion element. An optical fiber in which one end is arranged to extend, and a predetermined area on the surface that is in contact with the one end of the optical fiber and disposed in a resin arrangement region including the light emitting and receiving surface in the element surface A light-transmitting resin that internally reflects light and optically couples the core of the optical fiber and the light receiving and emitting unit, and the photoelectric conversion element is at least part of the edge of the resin arrangement region, The element surface has a stepped portion that is recessed, and the light transmitting resin is arranged up to an edge of the stepped portion.
With such a configuration, it is easy to make the shape of the light transmitting resin appropriate, and it is possible to suppress the coupling loss of light between the core of the optical fiber and the light receiving and emitting unit of the photoelectric conversion element. In addition, by forming the step portion in the photoelectric conversion element, the surface area of the photoelectric conversion element can be increased as compared with the case where the step portion is not formed, and the heat dissipation of the photoelectric conversion element can be improved. In addition, as described above, the light-transmitting resin tends to hinder heat dissipation of the photoelectric conversion element, but in the optical module of the present invention, the spread of the light-transmitting resin is limited to the edge of the stepped portion, so that heat dissipation is reduced. The decrease can be suppressed. Thus, according to the optical module of the present invention, an optical module with excellent reliability can be obtained.
The stepped portion preferably extends in a curved shape surrounding the light emitting / receiving surface. In this case, it is more preferable that the optical fiber is arranged such that a straight line passing through the center of the core overlaps the light receiving / emitting surface when viewed from the direction facing the light receiving / emitting surface.
In such a configuration, it is possible to easily form a predetermined region on the surface where the light of the light-transmitting resin is internally reflected in a curved shape surrounding the light emitting / receiving portion. By the way, when the photoelectric conversion element is a light emitting element and the light receiving / emitting part is a light emitting part, the light emitted from the light emitting part propagates with a predetermined divergence angle. As described above, when light propagates with a predetermined divergence angle, a predetermined region on the surface where the light of the light-transmitting resin is internally reflected has a curved shape surrounding the light emitting and receiving unit as described above. Thus, the reflected light can be easily collected on the core of the optical fiber. Further, when the photoelectric conversion element is a light receiving element and the light receiving / emitting part is a light receiving part, the light emitted from the core of the optical fiber propagates in the light transmitting resin with a predetermined divergence angle. Even in this case, as described above, the predetermined region on the surface where the light of the light transmitting resin is internally reflected is formed into a curved shape so as to surround the light emitting / receiving unit, so that the reflected light is collected in the light receiving unit. It can be made easy to light. In particular, when viewed from the direction of the light emitting / receiving surface, when the light emitting / receiving unit is arranged at a position overlapping with a straight line passing through the center of the core, the optical coupling between the light emitting / receiving unit and the core of the optical fiber is made stronger. Can do. Thus, according to this configuration, an optical module can be obtained in which the coupling loss of light is further suppressed.
The stepped portion preferably extends in a straight line perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the one end of the optical fiber. In this case, it is preferable that the photoelectric conversion element includes a plurality of the light receiving and emitting units that are optically coupled to the core.
In this way, the stepped portion is formed in a straight line, so that the processing for forming the stepped portion can be performed more easily than in the case where the stepped portion is curved. Further, since the resin stops at the edge of the linear stepped portion, the shape of the predetermined region on the surface where the light of the light transmitting resin is internally reflected can be made closer to a plane. In this case, when the plurality of light emitting / receiving units are optically coupled to the core of the optical fiber as described above, the efficiency of optical coupling between the respective light emitting / receiving units and the core can be made to be uniform. . When there is a large difference in the optical coupling efficiency between each light emitting / receiving unit and the core, if the light receiving / emitting unit with the highest optical coupling efficiency with the core stops functioning, the core and the plurality of light emitting / receiving units The total amount of light combined with and changes greatly. On the other hand, if the efficiency of optical coupling between each light emitting / receiving unit and the core is nearly uniform, even if one of the light emitting / receiving units stops functioning, the amount of light that the core and the plurality of light emitting / receiving units combine Can be prevented from changing greatly. Therefore, even if any one of the light receiving and emitting units does not function, it can be suppressed that the optical module does not function. Further, by bringing the shape of the predetermined region of the surface where the light of the light-transmitting resin internally reflects as described above close to a plane, even if the positions of the plurality of light emitting / receiving units are shifted, the optics of each light receiving / emitting unit and core Deviation of the effective coupling efficiency can be suppressed. For this reason, it can be set as the optical module excellent in reliability.
The step portion is preferably formed by a groove.
By forming the step portion with the groove, the step portion can be easily formed by etching or the like.
The edge angle is preferably an acute angle.
Thus, when the edge angle of the stepped portion is an acute angle, the force of wetting and spreading of the uncured light transmissive resin at the edge is smaller than when the edge angle is an obtuse angle, and the light transmissive resin is applied. At this time, since the light transmissive resin is more easily stopped at the edge of the stepped portion, the shape of the light transmissive resin can be made more appropriate. Therefore, the optical module can further reduce the optical coupling loss.
As described above, according to the present invention, there are provided an optical module manufacturing method and an optical module that can reduce the loss of light.
DESCRIPTION OF EXEMPLARY EMBODIMENTS Hereinafter, preferred embodiments of an optical module and a manufacturing method thereof according to the invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings.
(First embodiment)
First, the optical module of this embodiment will be described. FIG. 1 is a plan view showing an optical module according to the first embodiment of the present invention.
As shown in FIG. 1, the
The
FIG. 2 is an enlarged plan view showing a main part of the optical module of FIG. 1, and FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the optical module taken along line III-III of FIG. However, FIG. 2 shows a part of the
As shown in FIGS. 1 to 3, the
As an example in which the
In the present embodiment, the
Further, a
An
The
The
In a state where one end of the
One end of the
The

With the
In the present embodiment, the distance from the center of the light emitting / receiving
The
Next, the operation of the
When the
On the other hand, when the
As described above, when light is emitted from the
Next, the manufacturing method of the optical module of this embodiment is demonstrated.
FIG. 4 is a flowchart showing an example of a process procedure for manufacturing the
<Arrangement process P1>
First, as shown in FIG. 1, a
After the
<Application process P2>
Next, the coating process P2 is performed. This step is a step of applying a
<Curing process P3>
Next, the curing step P3 is performed. This step is a step of curing the
Further, after the curing step P3 or between the placement step P1 and the coating step P2, a substrate fixing step for fixing the
Thus, the
As described above, the method of manufacturing the
According to such a manufacturing method of the
Further, in the
Therefore, it is easy to make the shape of the
In the present embodiment, the stepped
In particular, in the present embodiment, the
In the coating process P2, the

(Second Embodiment)
Next, a second embodiment of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to FIGS. In addition, about the component which is the same as that of 1st Embodiment, or equivalent, except the case where it demonstrates especially, the same referential mark is attached | subjected and the overlapping description is abbreviate | omitted.
FIG. 8 is an enlarged plan view showing the main part of the optical module according to the second embodiment of the present invention, and FIG. 9 is a cross-sectional view of the optical module along the line VIII-VIII in FIG.
The
Also in the present embodiment, the
In the present embodiment, at least two light emitting / receiving
Each of the light emitting / receiving
The configuration of the
Further, as described above, a part of the edge of the
In addition, the
Next, the operation of the optical module of this embodiment will be described.
When the
In addition, the optical module of this embodiment can be manufactured by the manufacturing method similar to the manufacturing method of the
As described above, according to the optical module of the present embodiment, the stepped
Further, in the optical module of the present embodiment, the
The present invention has been described above by taking the first and second embodiments as examples, but the present invention is not limited to these.
In the first embodiment, an example in which the stepped
Moreover, the
Further, the
Moreover, the
In the above embodiment, the angle of the
Further, for example, in the first and second embodiments, the outer peripheral surface of the clad at one end of the optical fiber fixed to the photoelectric conversion element is in contact with the element surface. Alternatively, the outer peripheral surface of the clad 32 may be separated from the element surface.
In the first embodiment, the light emitting / receiving
