Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a thin catalyst layer and a method for producing the same. The present invention also relates to a catalyst electrode of a fuel cell provided with the catalyst thin layer.
Catalyst thin layers are used in many applications to facilitate the reaction. For example, catalyst thin layers can be used in energy systems such as catalytic combustion systems or sensor systems such as glucose, hydrogen or oxygen detectors, or as microelectromechanical systems (MEMs), lab-on-chip or microfluidic systems. Can be used in any microsystem. More specifically, the catalyst thin layer is used for manufacturing a catalyst electrode for a fuel cell.
The basic structure of the fuel cell is schematically illustrated in FIG. The fuel cell comprises an
In a solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell, also known as a proton exchange membrane (PEM) type fuel cell, the proton exchange membrane (PEM) 1 constitutes an electrolyte material (FIG. 1). This membrane is sandwiched between two electrodes and is preferably covered by a
The
In the prior art, the
As illustrated in FIG. 2, patent EP-B-0600888 and patent publication US-A-1605 / 0064276 include
Further, EP-B-1137090 consists in sputtering a catalytic metal and a carbon source onto PEM1 to form a nanophase of
In any case, the catalyst layer contains carbon particles, which have a poor conductivity, i.e. a conductivity of less than 10 < 4 > S / m. Furthermore, access to the catalyst site can be difficult.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an effective catalyst thin layer having high electron conductivity and improved access to the catalyst site.
This is achieved by means of a thin catalyst layer as described in the appended claims. More specifically, it consists of electronically conductive catalyst nanoparticles embedded in a polymer matrix, the ratio of the number of catalyst atoms to the total number of atoms being between 40% and 90%, more preferably 50% to Obtained by a thin catalyst layer comprised between 60%.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a method for producing such a catalyst thin layer.
With reference to FIG. 4, the
The particle size of the electron
A preferred electron conducting catalyst is a metal. More specifically, the electron conductive catalyst includes pure platinum (Pt) or Pt and at least one other metal such as gold (Au), rhodium (Rh), iridium (Ir), ruthenium (Ru), tin ( It may be an alloy with Sn), bismuth (Bi) and molybdenum (Mo). It may be a mixture of Pt and at least one of the aforementioned metals. Platinum (Pt) alloys, such as Pt—Ru—Bi alloys, are preferably used in abiotic biofuel cells that use, for example, glucose or methanol as fuel when carbon dioxide is a byproduct of the electrochemical reaction. Is done.

A vacuum process is particularly suitable for realizing the catalyst
For example, the

The conductivity (σ) of several Pt catalyst
The roughness (R) is representative of the specific surface area of the Pt catalyst
Therefore, by selecting the catalyst atomic percentage of Pt within the range of 40% to 90%, more preferably 50% to 60%, the improved effect of high Pt specific surface area and high conductivity is combined.

The

The resulting MEA can be included in various types of fuel cells, such as solid alkaline fuel cells (SAFC) or solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). More preferably, the obtained MEA is used in a PEM fuel cell.
