The present invention relates to an EL (electroluminescence) display device and an electronic device using the same. Specifically, the present invention relates to a technique for preventing deterioration of an EL element.

In recent years, a display device using an EL element as a self-luminous element using the EL phenomenon of an organic material (E
L display device) is being developed. Since the EL display device is a self-luminous type, it does not require a backlight like a liquid crystal display device, and further has a wide viewing angle. Therefore, it is promising as a display portion of a portable device used outdoors.

However, since the EL layer, which is a basic part of the EL element, is an organic material, it is extremely vulnerable to oxidation and easily deteriorates due to the presence of a small amount of oxygen. It is also vulnerable to heat, which also contributes to oxidation. This disadvantage of being vulnerable to oxidation is the cause of the short lifetime of the EL element, and has been a large barrier to practical use.

In this specification, an element formed by a combination of anode / EL layer / cathode is referred to as an EL element. Actually, current is passed between the anode and the cathode, and light is emitted by recombination of electrons and holes in the EL layer.

Further, the structure of the EL element is not particularly limited in the present invention. Usually, a film having a high work function, for example, a transparent conductive film is used as the anode, and a film having a low work function, for example, a film containing an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal is used as the cathode. The EL layer can have any known structure.

Note that in this specification, an EL layer refers to a layer that is provided between an anode and a cathode and provides a field for carrier movement, transport, or recombination. Although it may consist of only the light emitting layer which becomes the recombination center, it is usually used in combination with an electron injection layer, an electron transport layer, a hole injection layer or a hole transport layer.

In addition, although materials for forming the EL layer include inorganic materials and organic materials, organic materials that require a low driving voltage are preferable. Further, among organic materials, there are a low molecular material and a high molecular (polymer) material, and a high molecular material is effective from the viewpoint of high heat resistance and easy film formation.

An EL display device formed by carrying out the present invention is a self-luminous type, and therefore has excellent visibility in a bright place and a wide viewing angle as compared with a liquid crystal display device. Therefore, it can be used as a display portion of various electronic devices. For example, for viewing TV broadcasts on a large screen, the EL of the present invention can be used as a display unit of an EL display (display incorporating an EL display device in a housing) with a diagonal of 30 inches or more (typically 40 inches or more). A display device may be used.

Such an electronic device of the present invention includes a video camera, a digital camera, a goggle type display (head mounted display), a car navigation system, a sound reproduction device (car audio, audio component, etc.), a notebook type personal computer, a game machine, A portable information terminal (mobile computer, cellular phone, portable game machine, electronic book or the like), an image reproducing device (specifically, a compact disc (CD), a laser disc (LD) or a digital video disc (DVD) with a recording medium) For example, a device provided with a display capable of reproducing the recording medium and displaying the image). In particular, since a portable information terminal that is often viewed from an oblique direction emphasizes the wide viewing angle, it is desirable to use an EL display device. In addition, the electronic devices often display information distributed through electronic communication lines such as the Internet and CATV (cable television), and in particular, opportunities for displaying moving image information are increasing. Since the response speed of the EL material is very high, the EL display device is preferable for moving image display. However, if the contour between pixels is blurred, the entire moving image is blurred. Therefore, it is extremely effective to use the EL display device of the present invention for clarifying the contour between pixels as a display portion of an electronic device.

In addition, since the EL display device consumes power in the light emitting portion, it is desirable to display information so that the light emitting portion is minimized. Accordingly, when an EL display device is used for a display unit mainly including character information such as a portable information terminal, particularly a mobile phone or a sound reproduction device, the character information is formed by the light emitting portion with the non-light emitting portion as the background. It is desirable to drive.
