Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an image forming apparatus and an image forming method for forming an image using ink that is cured by irradiation with actinic rays.
In recent years, with the dramatic advancement of inkjet technology, color large format printing that achieves both high speed and high image quality using an inkjet image forming apparatus is becoming possible. This apparatus is used in a wide range of fields especially for sign / display applications, and can be applied to, for example, printing of storefront POP (Point Of Purchase), wall posters, outdoor advertisements / signboards, and the like. In the inkjet method, a printed matter can be obtained by ejecting ink droplets onto a recording medium to form a large number of dots. That is, countless colors can be reproduced on a recording medium by combining various dots having different sizes or colors.
Incidentally, gloss is one factor that determines the quality of printed matter. This glossiness is an important characteristic for enhancing the texture of an image in recent years when the importance of design has increased. Therefore, various techniques relating to the glossiness of images formed by the ink jet method have been proposed.
By the way, when an ink containing a pigment is used, since the particle diameter is relatively larger than that of a dye, inclusions such as a pigment tend to remain on the recording surface. In particular, there is a problem that gloss nonuniformity occurs on a gradation image, and as a result, the appearance (quality) of the image is deteriorated. This is because unevenness occurs even on the same image due to the discreteness and discontinuity of the dot arrangement rule.
However, the method and apparatus disclosed in
SUMMARY An advantage of some aspects of the invention is that it provides an image forming apparatus and an image forming method capable of finely adjusting the glossiness of an image.

As described above, by storing the correspondence information indicating the correspondence relationship between the color signal value of the image signal, the gloss evaluation value, and the amount of irradiation light, and referring to it in a timely manner, the desired glossiness can be easily and reliably reproduced.
Furthermore, the gloss evaluation value is preferably an evaluation value calculated based on the surface inclination distribution. Alternatively, the gloss evaluation value is preferably an evaluation value calculated based on the declination luminous intensity distribution.
Further, it is preferable that the curing light source includes a light emitting element array arranged in a matrix and is provided so as to be able to scan integrally with the recording head.

<Description of Light Amount Conversion Table 32>
FIG. 2 is a graph showing a typical relationship between the irradiation amount of the
As understood from this graph, the glossiness (glossiness) tends to decrease as the amount of irradiation light increases. This phenomenon is because when the amount of irradiation light of the
If the above relationship is grasped in advance, the glossiness of the image can be freely adjusted by appropriately controlling the amount of irradiation with the
3A and 3B are schematic views showing an example of the data format of the light quantity conversion table 32 of FIG. More specifically, FIG. 3A corresponds to image forming conditions for forming each color chart, and shows the relationship between CMYK color values and irradiation light quantity. FIG. 3B corresponds to the measurement result of the gloss evaluation value in each color chart, and shows the relationship between the gloss evaluation value and the amount of irradiation light. By combining these light quantity conversion tables 32, it is possible to associate three parameters, that is, the image color value, the gloss evaluation value, and the irradiation light quantity.
In the example of FIG. 3A and the like, the color value that can be directly associated with the input image signal (color signal value in the input image signal) is adopted as the color value of the image. It may be a value. For example, if the color value is L * a * b * , it can be converted into a CMYK color signal value by referring to the color profile. Further, the information associating the three parameters is not limited to the table illustrated in FIG. 3A and the like, and various forms including a function and a learning model can be adopted.
[Operation of the light quantity determination unit 10]
1 will be described in detail with reference to the flowchart of FIG. 4 and other drawings as appropriate.
In step S1, the light
In step S2, the
In step S3, the light
In step S4, the target
As shown in FIG. 5, a graph similar to that in the example of FIG. 2 is created for each different color (three colors in this example). These graphs can be created by extracting each data of the light quantity conversion table 32 shown in FIG. 3B.
On the other hand, the operating range of the irradiation light quantity is determined in advance by comprehensively considering the image quality and image quality including glossiness, graininess, sharpness, and color reproducibility (presence / absence of color mixing). Then, the target
Note that the target
The target
In step S5, the data conversion unit 28 sequentially converts the image signal whose resolution has been converted in step S2 for each pixel, so that the amount of irradiation light according to the color arrangement of the image (that is, the color at each position on the image). To decide. In this process, the data conversion unit 28 refers to the light amount conversion table 32 read in step S3 and the target value of the gloss evaluation value set in step S4. As a result, two parameters (color value and gloss evaluation value) among the three parameters (color value, gloss evaluation value, and irradiation light amount) are designated, so that the remaining one parameter (irradiation light amount) is uniquely set. It is determined. Thereafter, the data conversion unit 28 sequentially supplies an irradiation control signal corresponding to the irradiation light amount to the light

[Effects of this image forming method]
The image forming apparatus 100 (see FIG. 8) discharges

[Specific examples of gloss evaluation values]
Next, a specific example of a gloss evaluation value that is an index of glossiness of an image will be described. As the gloss evaluation value, surface gradient distribution, declination luminous intensity, specular gloss (see international standard “ISO 2813”), surface roughness (for example, “arithmetic average roughness” defined in ISO 1302: 2000, average Square deviation etc.) can be used. Hereinafter, a method for calculating the gloss evaluation value that matches the visual characteristics of the observer will be described with reference to FIGS. 7A to 7C.
FIG. 7A shows the surface gradient distribution for each color on the image formed by the same apparatus. The horizontal axis of the graph is the tilt angle (unit: deg), and the vertical axis is the normalized reflected light intensity. That is, the integrated value of the reflected light intensity with respect to the tilt angle is equal to 1. As can be understood from the graph, each distribution is generally symmetric (isotropic), but the extent of spread differs depending on the color difference (first to third colors).
FIG. 7B shows a typical
ここでは、表面傾斜分布80のAAD(Average of Absolute Difference)の逆数を、光沢評価値として定義する。
FIG. 7C is a schematic diagram for explaining a method of calculating the gloss evaluation value from the
According to the gloss evaluation value, the greater the value, the smaller the angle dependency of the gloss, and the smaller the value, the greater the angle dependency of the gloss. In addition, it was confirmed that by using this gloss evaluation value, it almost coincided with the glossiness of the image perceived by the observer.
Further, by applying the gloss evaluation value calculated based on the surface inclination distribution as the light amount conversion table 32 (see FIG. 3B), it is possible to form an image with a uniform gloss feeling for the observer. Even if the gloss evaluation value calculated based on the declination luminous intensity distribution is applied, the same effect as described above can be obtained.

Halftone processing is processing for converting a continuous tone image signal into a binary or multilevel control signal. Various known means such as an error diffusion method, a dither method, a threshold matrix method, and a density pattern method can be applied as the halftone processing means. The control signal thus obtained is used as ink ejection data for controlling the driving (ON) / non-driving (OFF) and droplet amount (dot size) of each nozzle.
