Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a cholesteric liquid crystal display used for color electronic paper and the like.
A cholesteric liquid crystal is generally induced by adding a chiral agent to a nematic liquid crystal and has a helical structure with a constant period. The cholesteric liquid crystal with the helical axis perpendicular to the substrate (planar state) reflects the circularly polarized light component that coincides with the twisted direction of the helical light incident parallel to the helical axis and transmits the other circularly polarized light component. Yes (selective reflection). Here, the center wavelength λ and the wavelength bandwidth Δλ of the reflected light exhibiting selective reflection characteristics are represented by λ = n · P and Δλ = Δn · P, respectively. In the formula, n is an average refractive index in a plane perpendicular to the helical axis, P is a helical pitch, and Δn is an anisotropy of the refractive index.
On the other hand, by applying a voltage to a cholesteric liquid crystal having positive dielectric anisotropy, the planar state in which the spiral axis is perpendicular to the substrate, the focal conic state in which the spiral axis is parallel to the substrate, and the long axis of the liquid crystal are released. Can be changed into three states of homeotropic states aligned in the electric field direction. Selective reflection occurs in the planar state, white turbidity occurs in the focal conic state, and light transmits in the homeotropic state. Further, the two states, the planar state and the focal conic state, show bistability (memory property) that maintains the state even after the voltage is turned off.
It has been proposed to use the cholesteric liquid crystal as a display by utilizing the wavelength selective reflectivity and bistability (see, for example, Patent Documents 1 and 2). In particular, the wavelength selective reflectivity of the cholesteric liquid crystal makes a polarizing plate and a color filter unnecessary, and the bistability of the cholesteric liquid crystal enables a large screen by passive matrix driving and lowers power consumption. Therefore, the cholesteric liquid crystal display is optimal as a display for color electronic paper.
However, in the conventional general cholesteric liquid crystal display, as shown in FIG. 3, a blue (B)
Therefore, in Non-Patent Document 1, a slit-shaped small cell is manufactured, and any RGB liquid crystal is injected into the corresponding slit and then sealed with a sealing material, once for each RGB liquid crystal. There has been proposed a method for producing an RGB stripe by performing three times. In
However, the method of Non-Patent Document 1 can deal only with the striped RGB arrangement, and the cholesteric liquid crystal for each of the RGB needs to be arranged in small cells, so that the manufacturing efficiency is not sufficient. Further, in the method of
The present invention has been made to solve the above-described problems, and is a method for manufacturing a cholesteric liquid crystal display that is excellent in manufacturing cost and manufacturing efficiency, and that can be reduced in weight and thickness and is suitable for an electronic paper display. The purpose is to provide.

In addition, the photoreactive chiral agent is not limited to the above example, and an S-(−)-isomer that is an isomer can also be used.
Among the various photoreactive chiral agents, R-(+)-bis (terephthalate)-{4-[(1-naphthalen-1-yl-) having the largest helical induction force from the viewpoint of production cost and production efficiency Ethylimino) -methyl] -phenyl} ester is preferred. This compound is represented by the following formula:
The helical induction force of the photoreactive chiral agent is preferably 60 / μm or more, more preferably 80 / μm or more, and most preferably 100 / μm or more. Here, “helical induction force” is 1 / pc (p = pitch (μm), c = molar fraction of photoreactive chiral agent) in a measurement system containing 4′-hexyloxy-4-cyanobiphenyl as a liquid crystal. It corresponds to the twisting force represented by.
The addition amount of the photoreactive chiral agent is not particularly limited as long as the selective reflection wavelength of the liquid crystal composition is an amount such that the wavelength in the blue region or less, preferably less than 470 nm. Here, the “blue region” means a wavelength region of 450 to 495 nm.
Since the photoreactive chiral agent used in the present invention has a large helical induction force, the amount added to the liquid crystal composition can be reduced. The specific addition amount of the photoreactive chiral agent in the liquid crystal composition is preferably 0.1% by mass or more and less than 8% by mass, and more preferably 1 to 5% by mass.
The liquid crystal component in the liquid crystal composition is a nematic liquid crystal. The nematic liquid crystal is not particularly limited, and those known in the technical field can be used. Examples of the nematic liquid crystal include known ones such as biphenyl, phenylcyclohexyl, terphenyl, tolan, pyrimidine, and stilbene. These can be used alone or in combination of two or more. The nematic liquid crystal is preferably nonreactive with the photoreactive chiral agent, and preferably exhibits liquid crystallinity at room temperature from the viewpoint of practicality. Here, the above “normal temperature” means 25 ° C.
In the liquid crystal composition used in the present invention, a chiral agent having no photoreactivity may be added together with the photoreactive chiral agent until the selective reflection wavelength reaches the red region. Here, the “red region” means a wavelength region of 630 to 750 nm. The chiral agent having no photoreactivity until the selective reflection wavelength reaches the red region is not particularly limited, and those known in the technical field can be used. Examples of such chiral agents include MLC-6247 manufactured by Merck.
The addition amount of the chiral agent having no photoreactivity is not particularly limited as long as it does not inhibit the effect of the present invention.
The method for preparing the liquid crystal composition is not particularly limited, and may be performed according to a known method. For example, a liquid crystal composition is prepared by adding a photoreactive chiral agent (and optionally a chiral agent that is not photoreactive with respect to light of wavelengths below the red region) to a nematic liquid crystal and then mixing the mixture using a known mixing device. Product can be prepared.
In the method for producing a cholesteric liquid crystal display of the present invention, first, the
Next, the
Here, the “room temperature” means 25 ° C. The temperature at the time of performing ultraviolet irradiation is preferably more than 25 ° C. and 150 ° C. or less, more preferably 30 ° C. to 100 ° C., and most preferably 40 ° C. to 60 ° C. If the temperature at the time of ultraviolet irradiation is not more than room temperature, subpixels cannot be formed in a short time, the manufacturing efficiency cannot be sufficiently increased, and the manufacturing cost also increases. On the other hand, when the temperature at the time of ultraviolet irradiation exceeds 150 ° C., the chiral agent may be decomposed.
When the
It does not specifically limit as a light source used for ultraviolet irradiation, A well-known thing can be used. As the light source, for example, a high-pressure mercury lamp, a metal halide lamp, an Hg—Xe lamp, or the like can be used.
Moreover, although the ultraviolet-ray to irradiate is not specifically limited, It is preferable to have a peak wavelength in 250-300 nm from viewpoints, such as practicality.
It does not specifically limit as a heating method at the time of ultraviolet irradiation, A well-known heating means can be used. As the heating means, for example, an oven or a hot plate can be used.
In the present invention, since a photoreactive chiral agent having a large helical induction force is used, a desired selective reflection wavelength can be obtained with a smaller UV irradiation amount than a general photochiral agent. As a result, the productivity of the cholesteric liquid crystal display can be improved.
The irradiation intensity of ultraviolet rays needs to be appropriately adjusted according to the peak wavelength of ultraviolet rays, but is generally 1 to 200 mW / cm 2 . The irradiation amount of ultraviolet rays also needs to be appropriately adjusted according to the target selective reflection wavelength, the peak wavelength of ultraviolet rays, and the like, but is generally 1 to 1000 mJ / cm 2 .
Since the manufacturing method of the cholesteric liquid crystal display of the present invention performed as described above can use an existing exposure process, RGB subpixels can be formed with high accuracy and at low cost. In addition, in this production method, a photoreactive chiral agent having a large helical induction force is used and ultraviolet irradiation is performed at a temperature higher than room temperature, so that the amount of photoreactive chiral agent added and the amount of ultraviolet irradiation are reduced. Thus, an increase in production capacity and a reduction in manufacturing cost can be realized. Further, the cholesteric liquid crystal display obtained by this manufacturing method has a single-layer structure composed of RGB sub-pixels, unlike the conventional RGB stacked structure, so that the display can be made thinner and lighter.
This method is described by Toshitoshi Yumoto and one other person, “Development of photoreactive chiral agent for cholesteric liquid crystal for color filter for liquid crystal display”, Fuji Film Research Report, Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd., March 2005. The present invention can also be applied to the production of a color filter by an exposure method such as described on May 22, No. 50, pages 60-63.

After stirring overnight at room temperature, ethanol was added to precipitate a solid. The precipitated solid was recrystallized from ethanol to obtain an ester compound as an intermediate.
Next, 11.0 mmol of this ester compound and 20.0 mmol of R-(+)-1- (1-naphthyl) ethylamine were dissolved in a mixed solvent of 100 mL of chloroform and 50 mL of ethanol and refluxed at 60 ° C. for 5 hours. After cooling to room temperature, 80 mL of ethanol was added to precipitate a solid. The precipitated solid was recrystallized from ethanol to obtain the target compound. The helical induction force of the obtained target compound was 141 / μm.
<Preparation of liquid crystal composition>
As a nematic liquid crystal, a mixed liquid crystal of MLC-2140 and MLC-2148 (mass ratio 51.3: 48.7, manufactured by Merck & Co., Inc.) is used, and the above-described photoreactive chiral agent is added to and mixed with the mixed liquid crystal. Thus, a liquid crystal composition was prepared. Here, the addition amount of the photoreactive chiral agent in the liquid crystal composition was 4.04% by mass.
<Production and evaluation of cholesteric liquid crystal display>
A substrate on which ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) and a rubbed alignment film are formed is bonded to a substrate on which ITO, a photo spacer having a height of 6 μm and a rubbed alignment film are formed, and a liquid crystal cell is bonded. After production, the liquid crystal composition prepared above was injected into a liquid crystal cell.
The liquid crystal cell obtained above was irradiated with ultraviolet rays (peak wavelength: 254 nm) at a temperature of 100 ° C. at various doses, and then the selective reflection wavelength of the liquid crystal composition was measured. Here, a hot plate was used as a heating method. For comparison, the selective reflection wavelength was also measured for a liquid crystal cell injected with the same liquid crystal composition and irradiated with ultraviolet rays (peak wavelength: 254 nm) at a dose of 23 ° C. at each dose. Here, the selective reflection wavelength was measured with a circular dichroism dispersometer J-720 manufactured by JASCO Corporation. The result is shown in FIG.
As can be seen from the results of FIG. 2, it was found that the selective reflection wavelength of the liquid crystal cell linearly changes depending on the irradiation amount of ultraviolet rays. In addition, the sample irradiated with ultraviolet rays at a temperature of 100 ° C. was able to obtain a desired selective reflection wavelength with a smaller amount of irradiation than that irradiated with ultraviolet rays at a temperature of 23 ° C. That is, when UV irradiation is performed at a temperature of 100 ° C., subpixels can be formed in a shorter time than when UV irradiation is performed at a temperature of 23 ° C., and the manufacturing cost and manufacturing efficiency are excellent. it is conceivable that.
<Production of cholesteric liquid crystal display>
A substrate having ITO and a rubbed alignment film formed on the surface thereof, and a substrate having ITO, a partition wall having a height of 6 μm and a rubbed alignment film formed on the surface were bonded together to prepare a liquid crystal cell. The prepared liquid crystal composition was injected into a liquid crystal cell. Next, on the basis of the relationship between the ultraviolet irradiation amount of FIG. 2 and the selective reflection wavelength of the liquid crystal composition, ultraviolet rays (peak wavelength 254 nm) were irradiated through the halftone photomask so as to have a predetermined irradiation amount. A cholesteric liquid crystal display having a number of subpixels could be manufactured.
