Description
本出願は、2007年9月12日に出願された係属中の米国特許出願第11/854,044号の部分継続出願である。

「凝固剤」とは、凝集剤より高い電荷密度、及びより低い分子量を持つ物質の組成物であり、細かく分割され懸濁された粒子を含む液体に添加されたときに、イオン性電荷の中和により、固体を不安定化して凝集させるものを意味する。
実施形態では、前記凝集剤は少なくとも10dL/gのRSVを有する。
実施形態では、前記凝集剤少なくとも15dL/gのRSVを有する。

式中、η=ポリマー溶液の粘度、η0=同一温度での溶媒の粘度、及びc=溶液中のポリマーの濃度である。
各実施例に用いられた充填剤は、非分散、分散、又は偏三角面体晶系(scalenohedral)PCC(スペシアルティ・ミネラルズ社(Specialty Minerals Inc.,)米国ペンシルバニア州ベスレヘム(Bethlehem)より、Albacar HOとして入手可能)のいずれかである。非分散PCCが用いられる場合、乾燥製品が水道水を用いて10%固体分に希釈される。分散PCCが用いられる場合、それは40%固体スラリーとして得られ、及び水道水を用いて10%固体分に希釈される。PCCの粒度分布は、Lasentec(登録商標)S400 FBRM(収束ビーム反射測定:Focused Beam Reflectance Measurement)プローブ(ラセンテック(Lasentec)ワシントン州レッドモンド(Redmond)により製造)を用いて凝集の間に3秒間の間隔で測定される。FBRMの背景にある理論の記載は、米国特許第4,871,251号に見出すことができる。PCC綿状塊の平均翼弦長(mean chord length:MCL)が、綿状塊凝集の範囲の総合的測定値として用いられる。300mLの10%PCCスラリーを含む600mLのビーカーにレーザー・プローブが挿入される。綿状塊凝集剤を添加する前に、この溶液をIKA RE16撹拌モーターにより800rpmで少なくとも30秒間撹拌した。
この実験は、PCCスラリーを綿状塊に凝集するための連続式プロセスの実現性を実証している。18Lの水道水に溶解した10%固体非分散PCC(スペシアルティ・ミネラルズ社(Specialty MineralsInc.,)米国ペンシルバニア州ベスレヘム(Bethlehem)より、Albacar HOとして入手可能)を遠心力ポンプを用いて7.6L/minの速度で5ガロンのバケツに注入した。1.0lb/tonの活性用量の0.3%の固体凝集剤A溶液を、一軸ねじポンプを用いて遠心力ポンプの注入口のPCCスラリーに注入した。次いでPCCを、1.0lb/tonの活性用量の凝固剤Aの0.7%固体溶液と共に、静的ミキサー内に供給した。充填剤の綿状塊の粒度分布をMastersizer Microを用いて測定し、及び表IIにまとめた。実施例1〜7と同様に、300mLの生成したスラリーをビーカー中で、1500rpmで8分間撹拌した。4分及び8分における充填剤の綿状塊の特性を、表III及びIVにそれぞれ示した。
凝固剤Aが遠心力ポンプに供給され、及び凝集剤Aが静的ミキサーに供給された以外は、充填剤スラリー及び実験操作は実施例8のものと同じである。充填剤の綿状塊の粒度特性は表II、III及びIVに示されている。
この実施例の目的は、手漉き紙の物理的性質に対する異なるサイズのPCC綿状塊の効果を評価することであった。PCCサンプルは、PCCの固体濃度が2%である以外は、実施例2に記載された操作手順を用いて得られた。1500rpmでの異なる時間のせん断により異なる粒径を持つ、あらかじめ綿状塊に凝集した充填剤の綿状塊の4サンプル(10−A、10−B、10−C及び10−D)が調製された。せん断時間及び生成された粒径特性が表Vに示されている。
偏三角面体晶系(scalenohedral)PCC(オムヤ(Omya)よりSyncarbSNYとして入手可能)を水道水を用いて10%固体に希釈した。充填剤の粒度分布は、Lasentec(登録商標)S400FBRMを用いて、綿状塊凝集の間に、3秒間の間隔で測定された。300mLの10%PCCスラリーを含む600mLのビーカーにレーザー・プローブを挿入した。綿状塊凝集剤の添加に先立ち、この溶液をIKARE16撹拌モーターにより800rpmで少なくとも30秒間撹拌した。
この実験は、PCCスラリーの綿状塊凝集に連続式プロセスを用いる実現可能性を実証している。18Lの10%固体非分散PCC((スペシアルティ・ミネラルズ社(Specialty Minerals Inc.,)米国ペンシルバニア州ベスレヘム(Bethlehem)より、Albacar HOとして入手可能)の水道水溶液のバッチを遠心力ポンプにより7.2kgPCC/minの速度で5ガロンのバケツに注入した。第一の綿状塊凝集剤溶液の適切な用量を、一軸ねじポンプを用いて遠心力ポンプの注入口のPCCスラリーに注入した。次いでPCCを、第二の綿状塊凝集剤の適切な量と共に、静的ミキサー内に供給した。充填剤の綿状塊の粒度分布をMastersizer Microを用いて測定し、及び表Xにまとめた。生成したサンプルは、遠心力ポンプを循環させることにより追加的なせん断にさらされ、その結果も表Xに与えられている。
a)充填剤粒子の陰イオン性に分散された充填剤粒子の水性スラリーを提供する工程;
b)系内の荷電を完全又は部分的に中和する目的で、低分子量組成物を分散物に添加する工程で;
c)高度の混合条件の下で、第一の綿状塊凝集剤を分散物に添加する工程;
d)高度の混合条件の下で、第二の綿状塊凝集剤(凝固剤又は凝集剤であり得る)を分散物に添加する工程;及び
e)所望の粒径を有する充填剤の綿状塊の分散物を提供するために、綿状塊に凝集した分散物を随意にせん断する工程、を含む。
実施例で用いられた、分散された粉末炭酸カルシウム(GCC)は、オムヤ(Omya)よりのHydrocarb HO G−ME又はOmyafil 90であった。65%固体スラリーとして得られた分散されたGCCは水道水により10%固体に希釈された。
充填剤の粒度分布は、実施例1〜7で述べたように、Lasentec(登録商標)S400FBRMを用いて、綿状塊凝集の間に、3秒間の間隔で測定された。300mLの10%PCCスラリーを含む600mLのビーカーにレーザー・プローブを挿入した。綿状塊凝集剤の添加に先立ち、この溶液をIKARE16撹拌モーターにより800rpmで少なくとも30秒間撹拌した。
この実施例の目的は、紙シートの物理的性質に対する異なるサイズの綿状塊に凝集した粉末炭酸カルシウムの効果を評価することであった。実施例 20からの、あらかじめ綿状塊に凝集した サンプル がこの目的で使用され、及び未処理のOmyafil 90に対して比較された。
Claims (15)
- 製紙プロセスで用いられる、特定の粒度分布を有する綿状塊に凝集した充填剤粒子の安定分散物を調製する方法であって:
a)充填剤粒子の水性スラリーを提供する工程;
b)第一の綿状塊凝集剤は凝集剤であり、充填剤粒子の顕著な綿状塊凝集を引き起こさずに、分散物に均一に混合するのに十分な量の第一の綿状塊凝集剤を分散物に添加する工程;
c)第一の綿状塊凝集剤を添加した後に、分散物に、第一の綿状塊凝集剤の存在下で、充填剤粒子の綿状塊凝集を開始させるのに十分な量の、第一の綿状塊凝集剤と反対の電荷を有する、第二の綿状塊凝集剤を添加する工程;及び
d)所望の粒径を有する充填剤の綿状塊の分散物を提供するために、綿状塊に凝集した分散物を随意にせん断する工程、を含む方法。 - 前記充填剤の綿状塊が10〜100μmの粒径中央値を有する、請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記充填剤が、炭酸カルシウム、カオリン粘土、タルク、二酸化チタン、アルミナ三水和物、硫酸バリウム及び水酸化マグネシウムよりなる群から選ばれる、請求項1に記載の方法。
- 第一及び第二の綿状塊凝集剤の両方ともが少なくとも2dL/gのRSVを有する凝集剤である、請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記第一の綿状塊凝集剤が陰イオン性である、請求項1に記載の方法。
- 第一の綿状塊凝集剤が、アクリルアミド及びアクリル酸ナトリウムの共重合体である、請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記第二の綿状塊凝集剤が、アクリルアミドとDMAEM、DMAEA、DEAEA、DEAEMの共重合体よりなる群から選ばれる、請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記第二の綿状塊凝集剤が、硫酸ジメチル、塩化メチル、塩化ベンジル及びそれらの任意の組み合わせから選ばれるものにより形成される四級アンモニウム塩の形態である、請求項8に記載の方法。
- 製紙プロセスで用いられる、高い荷電を用いて分散される綿状塊に凝集した充填剤粒子の安定分散物を調製する方法であって:
a)陰イオン性に分散された充填剤粒子の水性スラリーを提供する工程;
b)低分子量組成物を分散物に添加する工程であって、添加される該低分子量組成物は少なくとも部分的に分散物の荷電を中和する;
c)高度の混合条件の下で、第一の綿状塊凝集剤を分散物に添加する工程;
d)高度の混合条件の下で、第二の綿状塊凝集剤を分散物に添加する工程であって、該第二の綿状塊凝集剤は、凝集剤、凝固剤、微小粒子、及びそれらの任意の組み合わせよりなる軍群から選ばれ;及び
e)所望の粒径を有する充填剤の綿状塊の分散物を提供するために、綿状塊に凝集した分散物を随意にせん断する工程、を含む方法。 - 前記低分子量の組成物が凝固剤である、請求項10に記載の方法。
- 前記第一の綿状塊凝集剤が陰イオン性である、請求項10に記載の方法。
- 前記第二の綿状塊凝集剤が、第一の綿状塊凝集剤の電荷と反対の電荷を有する、請求項10に記載の方法。
- 前記充填剤の綿状塊が、10〜100μmの粒径中央値を有する、請求項10に記載の方法。
- 前記充填剤が、炭酸カルシウム、カオリン粘土、タルク、二酸化チタン、アルミナ三水和物、硫酸バリウム及び水酸化マグネシウムよりなる群から選ばれる、請求項10に記載の方法。
- 前記低分子量組成物が陽イオン性凝固剤であり、前記第一の綿状塊凝集剤が、陰イオン性綿状塊凝集剤であり、前記第二の綿状塊凝集剤が陽イオン性綿状塊凝集剤であり、及び両方の凝集剤が、少なくとも1,000,000の分子量を有する、請求項10に記載の方法。
