図2(A)は2は六角ナット、3は雄ねじ、4は木材又は金属材であり、ロックワッシャ締め付け前を示している。(B)はほぼロックワッシャ締め付け状態である。
六角ナットを締めつけ始めるとロックワッシャの円錐状部分、係止片部分を押圧しながら締め付けて行くため、常に木材との間に弾性反発力が働き、六角ナットの緩みを防止する。
又六角ナットを締めつけ時はロックワッシャ係止片Cを倒しながら締め付けるが、六角ナットの緩み回転方向となるとロックワッシャ係止角部1Dが六角ナットに食いつき緩み回転を阻む。この結果六角ナットの緩みは無くなる。また木材特有の収縮による木ヤセが発生してもロックワッシャの持つ円錐状の弾性反発力により、構造物の締結部に緩みが無くなり、構造強度の維持が図られるので耐震強度の向上に繋がる。
