しかし、合成繊維糸からなる漁網は耐久性に優れるものの、使用後の廃材処理が大変であり、近年においては環境への負荷も大きな問題になっている。
特に富山湾で、ホタルイカ漁に用いられる定置網は、ホタルイカの漁獲時期が4〜6月と短期間に限られていることもあり、現在も稲わらからなるわら縄を網糸に用いられている。
これは、わら縄が天然素材であり、ホタルイカの漁獲に使用後にそのまま、海に沈めることができるからである。
わら縄は、海中で菌により分解され、栄養源ともなる。
しかし、近年稲作の機械化が進展し、はさ掛け等による天日干しも殆ど消滅したために稲わらを確保するのが困難になりつつある。
そこで本発明者らは、わら縄に替わるロープ材を検討した結果、本発明に至った。

表層紙はパルプ等の天然素材を用いたものであれば、耐水処理、撥水処理したものがよい。
ホタルイカ漁の漁網等として使用する場合には、3〜4ヶ月の使用期間であり、使用後には海中に沈めることを考慮し、表層紙の強度設計を行う。
なお、表層紙はパルプを主に使用したものであれば、古紙とバージンパルプを混合したものでもよく、耐水剤、撥水剤の添加のみでは、耐久性が不充分の場合には表面に樹脂フィルムを積層したものを用いても良い。

麻糸11からなる芯糸の周囲に古新聞紙から得られた軟質の再生紙を中間紙として、帯状にしたものを一部重ねながら、渦巻状に巻き付ける。
その上から、表層紙13を中間紙12と同じ方向に巻き付ける。
このようにして得られた子紐14を複数本、本実施例では2本の子紐を子紐の巻き方向とは逆方向に撚り合せて撚りロープ10を製作した。
このときのA−A線断面図を図2に示す。
本実施例に用いた表層紙は、古紙とバージンのパルプを使用し、紙厚70〜100μm、引張り強度縦方向6kgf以上、横方向1kgf以上、引裂き強度縦方向35kgf以上、横方向70kgf以上、伸度4%以下のものを用いた。
これを網糸としてホタルイカの漁網を網み、海中で使用したところ、従来のわら縄以上の耐久性があった。
