Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a two-component developing device that detects the remaining amount of toner in a toner containing portion using a toner concentration sensor provided for toner concentration control that keeps the toner concentration of a developer composed of toner and carrier constant. And an image forming apparatus including the same.
In electrophotographic image forming apparatuses (printers, facsimile machines, copiers, multifunction machines, etc.), two-component developing devices using a developer containing toner and a carrier are widely used. In the developing device, in order to eliminate the need for replacement and repair of the developing device due to the carrier deteriorated with time, the developer is gradually discharged from the developing device, while the developer mixed with an appropriate amount of carrier into the replenishing toner is supplied to the developing device. A so-called trickle method is adopted in which the carrier is gradually replaced by being supplied.
In the two-component developing device, toner density control is performed to maintain a constant toner density in order to maintain image quality. In this toner density control, the toner density of the developer is detected by a toner density sensor. When the toner concentration falls below a specified value, the toner is supplied to the developing device from the toner container containing the replenishing toner so as to restore the toner concentration.
However, if there is no toner remaining in the toner container, of course, proper toner density control cannot be performed. For this reason, the toner remaining in the toner container is detected, and if there is no remaining toner, a warning is given to the toner container. It is necessary to prompt the user to change the container. For such detection of the remaining amount of toner in the toner container, it is possible to provide dedicated sensors. However, in this case, the configuration becomes complicated, which causes an increase in size and cost of the apparatus, which is not desirable.
By the way, the carrier and toner of the developer are charged with opposite polarities and attracted by this charge. However, since the carriers have the same polarity, repulsive force works, and this repulsive force causes the carrier to have a low density state. Retained. However, when the carrier deteriorates due to long-term use, the charging characteristics are lowered, so the repulsive force between the carriers is reduced, and the density of the carrier is increased accordingly, so that the carrier ratio is high, that is, the toner concentration is low. In some cases, erroneous detection is performed, and excessive toner supply control is performed.
When the toner is replenished excessively in this way, the amount of developer in the developing tank increases, and as a result, the bulk of the developer is abnormally increased. In this state, the developer is above the stirring screw. It becomes difficult for the developer to be sufficiently stirred by the stirring screw, and much of the replenishment toner is conveyed without being mixed in the upper layer portion of the developer.
However, the toner concentration sensor detects the toner concentration of a relatively close developer by the magnetic permeability that changes in accordance with the ratio of the toner and the carrier. Since it is provided at the bottom, it is difficult to detect an increase in toner density due to the replenishing toner when a large amount of the replenishing toner is clinging to the upper layer of the developer as described above. An erroneous detection that determines that there is no toner remaining despite the amount of toner occurs.
In particular, in the developing device disclosed in
The present invention has been devised to solve such problems of the prior art, and the main purpose of the present invention is to increase the bulk of the developer due to the deterioration of the carrier, so that the replenishing toner and the development are developed. Another object of the present invention is to provide a two-component developing device configured to avoid erroneous detection of the remaining amount of toner caused by insufficient stirring with the agent, and an image forming apparatus including the two-component developing device.
The two-component developing device of the present invention includes an agitating chamber that agitates a developer composed of toner and a carrier while being circulated, a replenishing portion that supplies toner from the toner storage portion into the agitating chamber, and an upstream vicinity of the replenishing portion. A developer tank provided at a position and provided with a discharge portion for discharging the developer in the stirring chamber according to the bulk of the developer, and a toner concentration sensor for detecting the toner concentration of the developer in the stirring chamber by magnetic permeability A toner replenishing unit for performing a replenishing operation for sending toner in the toner storage unit to the replenishing unit, and determining whether toner replenishment is necessary from the output of the toner density sensor to control the replenishing operation by the toner replenishing unit. At the same time, based on the change in the output of the toner density sensor when the toner supply unit is operated to supply toner, the remaining amount of toner in the toner storage unit is determined. Control means, and when the control means determines that toner replenishment is necessary, it first performs toner replenishment in the standard first replenishment mode, thereby significantly changing the output of the toner density sensor. When the toner does not appear, the toner is supplied in the second supply mode in which the supply amount is increased from the first supply mode.
The image forming apparatus according to the present invention includes the two-component developing device configured as described above.
According to the present invention, the abnormal state in which the replenishment toner and the developer cannot be sufficiently agitated due to the bulkiness of the developer is eliminated by the toner replenishment in the second replenishment mode, and the toner storage unit has sufficient capacity. If there is a remaining amount of toner, a significant change appears in the output of the toner density sensor, and erroneous detection of the remaining amount of toner can be avoided.
In order to solve the above problems, a first invention includes a stirring chamber that stirs a developer composed of toner and a carrier while circulating and conveying, a replenishing unit that supplies toner from a toner storage unit to the stirring chamber, and a A developer tank provided near the upstream side of the replenishment unit and having a discharge unit for discharging the developer in the stirring chamber according to the bulk of the developer; and the toner concentration of the developer in the stirring chamber A toner concentration sensor to detect the toner, a toner replenishing unit for performing a replenishing operation for sending the toner in the toner storage unit to the replenishing unit, and determining whether toner replenishment is necessary from the output of the toner density sensor. And controlling the replenishment operation by the toner, and based on the change state of the output of the toner density sensor when the toner replenishing means is operated to replenish the toner, Control means for detecting the remaining amount of toner in the container, and when the control means determines that toner replenishment is necessary, it first performs toner replenishment in a standard first replenishment mode, whereby the toner concentration When no significant change appears in the output of the sensor, the toner supply is performed in the second supply mode in which the supply amount is increased from that in the first supply mode.
According to this, since a large amount of toner is introduced from the replenishment unit at a time in the second replenishment mode, the bulk (deposition height) of the developer increases in the vicinity of the replenishment unit. Even in the vicinity of the discharge portion in the vicinity of the upstream side, the bulk of the developer increases, and a large amount of developer is discharged from the discharge portion. Then, when a portion where the bulkiness is reduced by discharging a large amount of developer at this discharge portion moves downstream and merges with the replenishment toner, the replenishment toner and the developer are small because the bulkiness of the developer is small. Is sufficiently stirred.
In this manner, the abnormal state in which the replenishment toner and the developer cannot be sufficiently stirred due to the bulk of the developer is eliminated by toner replenishment in the second replenishment mode, and sufficient toner is stored in the toner storage unit. If there is a remaining amount, a significant change appears in the output of the toner density sensor, and erroneous detection of the remaining amount of toner can be avoided.
According to a second aspect of the present invention for solving the above problem, in the first aspect, in the second replenishment mode, the replenishment amount is increased by extending a replenishment time for operating the toner replenishing means. And
According to this, it is possible to increase the replenishment amount in the second replenishment mode without incurring an increase in the size or cost of the apparatus.
According to a third invention for solving the above-mentioned problems, in the first and second inventions, the control means is significant in supplying the toner in the second supply mode and the output of the toner density sensor. The determination of whether or not a change has occurred is repeatedly performed, and when a significant change appears in the output of the toner density sensor, it is determined that there is a sufficient amount of toner remaining in the toner storage unit, and The toner supply in the second supply mode is terminated.
According to this, by repeating the toner replenishment in the second replenishment mode and the significance determination, it is possible to reliably eliminate the abnormal state where the replenishment toner cannot be sufficiently stirred regardless of the amount of developer in the developing tank. As a result, the remaining amount of toner can be properly detected, and wasteful discharge of the developer can be suppressed, and an excessive increase in the toner concentration of the developer can be avoided.
According to a fourth aspect of the present invention for solving the above-described problems, in the third aspect of the present invention, the control unit causes the toner after the toner replenishment to be performed each time the toner is replenished in the second replenishment mode. The significance determination is performed based on the change state of the output of the density sensor.
This makes it possible to more accurately determine whether or not there is a sufficient amount of toner remaining in the toner storage unit.
In this case, the maximum value and the minimum value of the output value of the toner density sensor from the time when each toner supply is started to the time when the time required for the supplied toner to reach the detection position of the toner density sensor elapses. And the difference is compared with a predetermined threshold value to determine significance, that is, whether or not a significant change has occurred in the output of the toner density sensor.
According to a fifth aspect of the present invention for solving the above-described problems, in the third and fourth aspects of the present invention, the control unit may perform the toner replenishment in the second replenishment mode a predetermined number of times. When no significant change appears in the output of the toner density sensor, it is determined that there is not enough toner remaining in the toner storage unit.
According to this, by appropriately determining the number of repetitions of toner replenishment, it is possible to properly detect the remaining amount of toner, and to avoid wasteful discharge of the developer and excessive increase in toner density.
If it is determined that there is not enough toner remaining in the toner storage unit, a warning for prompting the user to replace the toner container as the toner storage unit or to supply the toner to the toner storage unit is displayed using a display device or the like. You should do it.
According to a sixth aspect of the present invention for solving the above-described problems, in the third to fifth aspects of the present invention, the control unit is configured to determine whether or not a significant change has occurred in the output of the toner density sensor. When it is determined from the output of the toner density sensor that the toner density of the developer has reached the specified value, the toner supply in the second supply mode is terminated.
According to this, it is possible to avoid an excessive increase in the toner concentration of the developer due to excessive toner replenishment.
Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings.

FIG. 4 shows how the output value changes when the toner density sensor shown in FIG. 3 is replenished with toner. The output voltage V of the
When the toner concentration of the developer in the developing
By this replenishment operation, replenishment toner is sent into the developing
Therefore, the maximum value Vmax and the minimum value of the output value of the
FIG. 5 is a schematic diagram illustrating a change state of the bulkiness of the developer in a normal state in the developing device illustrated in FIG. 3. As shown in FIG. 5A, when the toner is replenished in a normal state where the bulk of the developer is small and appropriate, as shown in FIG. 5B, the second stirring chamber is opened from the
Then, the portion where the toner density is increased by the replenishing toner is conveyed to the stirring
FIG. 6 is a schematic diagram illustrating a change state of the bulkiness of the developer in an abnormal state in the developing device illustrated in FIG. 3. If the carrier deteriorates due to long-term use, the charge amount will decrease, so the repulsive force between the carriers will decrease, and the density of the carrier will increase accordingly. As a result, the amount of the developer in the developing
In such an abnormal state, it becomes difficult for the developer above the stirring
On the other hand, since the
Therefore, as will be described in detail below, when the
FIG. 7 is a schematic diagram showing a change state of the bulk of the developer in the rapid replenishment mode in the developing device shown in FIG. As shown in FIG. 7A, when the toner supply is performed in the rapid supply mode in which a large amount of toner is supplied at a time in the abnormal state in which the bulk of the developer is increased, FIG. ), The bulkiness (deposition height) of the developer is increased in the vicinity of the replenishing
Thereby, the bulk of the developer is reduced in the vicinity of the
As shown in FIG. 5, even when toner supply is performed in the quick supply mode in which a large amount of toner is supplied at a time in a normal state where the developer is small and appropriate, the original developer is bulky. Therefore, excessive discharge at the
FIG. 8 is a flowchart showing a processing procedure in the
First, in the standard replenishment mode, the output voltage V of the
As shown in FIG. 9A, the toner replenishment in the standard replenishment mode includes a replenishment operation in which the
Then, the maximum value Vmax and the minimum value Vmin of the output voltage V of the
Note that this significance determination (ST105) is performed as shown in FIG. 9A in the waiting time (in this case, the time from the start of toner supply until the supplied toner reaches the detection position of the toner density sensor 29). 3.5 seconds), the maximum value Vmax and the minimum value Vmin of the output voltage V are determined from the time when the toner supply is started to the time when the significance determination is started every time the toner is supplied (ST103). The output voltage V acquired during the period is the target.
If it is determined in this significance determination (ST105) that no significant change has occurred in the output voltage V (No in ST105), the count value a of the first tonerless counter is incremented by 1 (ST106). Then, it is determined whether or not the count value a is equal to or greater than a predetermined upper limit value (here, 10) (ST108). If the count value a is not equal to or greater than the upper limit value, the process returns to toner density monitoring (ST101 and 102). When the toner density is low, the above process is repeated.
On the other hand, if there is a significant change in the output voltage V (Yes in ST105), it is determined that there is a sufficient amount of toner in the
If the count value a of the first toner-less counter is equal to or greater than the upper limit value (Yes in ST108), that is, if there is no significant change in the output voltage V continuously for a predetermined number of times (here, 10 times), It is determined that there is not enough toner remaining in the
In the quick supply mode, first, the output voltage V of the
On the other hand, if it is determined in the toner density determination (ST110) that the toner density is low, toner replenishment is performed (ST111). In the toner concentration determination (ST110), the output voltage V is compared with a predetermined determination reference voltage, and if the output voltage V is greater than the determination reference voltage, it is determined that the toner concentration is low.
As shown in FIG. 9B, the toner replenishment in this quick replenishment mode is a replenishment operation in which the
Then, the maximum value Vmax and the minimum value Vmin of the output voltage V of the
Note that this significance determination (ST113) is performed as shown in FIG. 9B in a waiting time (in this case, from the start of toner supply until the supplied toner reaches the detection position of the toner density sensor 29). 3.5 seconds), the maximum value Vmax and the minimum value Vmin of the output voltage V are determined from the time when the toner supply is started to the time when the significance determination is started every time the toner is supplied (ST111). The output voltage V acquired during the period is the target.
If it is determined in this significance determination (ST113) that there is no significant change in the output voltage V (No in ST113), the count value b of the second tonerless counter is incremented by 1 (ST114). Next, it is determined whether or not the count value b is equal to or greater than a predetermined upper limit value (here, 12) (ST115). If the count value b is not equal to or greater than the upper limit value, the process returns to toner density monitoring (ST109 and 110). When the toner density is low, the above process is repeated.
On the other hand, if there is a significant change in the output voltage V (Yes in ST113), the
Further, when the count value b of the second tonerless counter is equal to or greater than the upper limit value (Yes in ST115), that is, when the output voltage V does not change significantly for a predetermined number of times (here, 12 times), It is determined that there is not enough toner remaining in the
Thus, in the standard replenishment mode, the replenishment operation performed for 1 second at a time is repeated up to 10 times, and in the quick replenishment mode, the replenishment operation performed for 4 seconds per time is repeated up to 12 times.
Here, in the quick replenishment mode, the replenishment amount is increased by extending the replenishment time for operating the
Further, the toner supply in the quick supply mode (ST111) and the significance determination (ST113) as to whether or not a significant change has occurred in the output of the
In addition, every time toner supply (ST111) is performed in the quick supply mode, the significance determination (ST113) is performed based on the change state of the output of the
If no significant change appears in the output of the
When it is determined from the output of the
FIG. 10 shows the amount of change (V difference) in the output voltage V of the
In the above example, the color image forming apparatus is used. However, the monochrome image forming apparatus can be similarly applied as long as a trickle method for gradually discharging the developer from the discharge unit is employed.
The developing device according to the present invention and the image forming apparatus provided with the developing device have a toner residue caused by the increase in the bulk of the developer due to the deterioration of the carrier and the insufficient stirring of the replenishment toner and the developer. The amount of toner remaining in the toner container is detected by using a toner concentration sensor provided for toner concentration control that has the effect of avoiding erroneous detection of the amount and maintains the toner concentration of the developer constant. It is useful as a developing device and an image forming apparatus equipped with the developing device.
