Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to image gradation control in an image forming apparatus that forms an image on a recording material.
In the conventional image forming apparatus, the gradation of the input image and the output image are affected by the reading characteristics of a reading element such as a CCD used in the image reading section, the charging characteristics of the image forming section, the development characteristics, the transfer characteristics, and the fixing characteristics. The gradation does not match. For example, FIG. 11A shows the gradation characteristics of the image forming apparatus. This gradation characteristic is detected by forming a toner pattern having gradation characteristics on a recording medium, a photosensitive member, an intermediate transfer member, etc. based on a predetermined input signal stored in advance and detecting the density thereof. Can do. Ideally, when the detected gradation characteristic is a linear type like the
As one of such controls, there is known image correction control in which an input image signal read by an image reading unit is converted by a γ look-up table (conversion table; hereinafter referred to as γLUT) and output. In this control, γ correction for converting an input image signal into an output image signal is performed by a
The γLUT is generated as follows. FIG. 12 shows a flowchart for creating the γLUT. In step S1201, the CPU of the image forming apparatus starts gradation correction control. Then, in step S1202, a specific gradation test pattern as shown in FIG. 13 is output without converting the image signal by the γLUT stored in the image forming apparatus (when the γLUT is off) during gradation correction control. The density of the gradation test pattern output in step S1203 is read by the image reading unit. In step S1204, the CPU (conversion table creating means) creates a
However, the maximum density of the output image changes because the toner charge amount increases or the device characteristics fluctuate due to a temporary environmental change. When tone correction control is executed in such a state, as shown in FIG. 14A, a
In addition, when the apparatus fluctuates so that further environmental fluctuations occur and an image density that greatly exceeds the target density is output, an amount of toner that exceeds the fixable amount of the fixing device is formed on the recording paper in the high density region. There is a possibility that fixing failure may occur.
By frequently performing the control for creating the γLUT shown in FIG. 12 according to the environmental change and the fluctuation of the apparatus characteristics, it is possible to always obtain the target gradation. However, frequent gradation correction control consumes toner and takes control time, leading to a load on the user.
However, when the correction γLUT is created by the method of Patent Document 1, the following problems occur. That is, according to the method of Patent Document 1, the
Further, in Patent Document 1, a configuration is adopted in which a region from a predetermined point on the
The present invention has been made to solve the above problems. An image forming apparatus according to the present invention detects, based on an input image signal, an image forming unit that forms an image on an image carrier, a density of an image pattern formed by the image forming unit, and a level of the image pattern. Detection means for detecting a tone characteristic, and conversion for converting the input image signal so that the gradation characteristic for the input image signal becomes a target gradation characteristic based on the gradation characteristic detected by the detection means A conversion table creating means for creating a table; and a judging means for judging whether or not an output image density corresponding to an input image signal having a maximum density in the gradation characteristic is a target density. When it is determined that the output image density is not the target density, the conversion table creating unit causes the output image density to become the target density based on the curve of the gradation characteristics. Create a correction gradation characteristic, characterized by creating the conversion table based on the corrected tone characteristic.
According to the first aspect, when the output density corresponding to the input image signal having the maximum density in the gradation characteristics obtained by detecting the density of the image pattern having gradation is not the target density, the following control is performed. That is, the corrected gradation characteristic is created based on the gradation characteristic so that the output image density corresponding to the input image signal having the maximum density becomes the target density based on the gradation characteristic curve. A conversion table (γLUT) is created based on the corrected gradation characteristics, and the input image signal is converted based on the created conversion table. According to the first aspect, since the corrected gradation characteristic is created based on the original gradation characteristic curve, the gradation of the output image can be maintained in the high density region.

The toner remaining on the photosensitive drum 4Y without being transferred to the intermediate transfer member 5 in the primary transfer step is scraped off by a cleaning blade which is a cleaning means 9Y pressed against the photosensitive drum 4Y, and is disposed in a waste toner container (not shown). ).

Here, image processing for converting an input image signal into an output image signal using a conventional γLUT (conversion table) will be described with reference to FIG. FIG. 11A shows the relationship between the input image signal and the density of the output image when the input image signal is output without being converted by the γLUT 1103 (FIG. 11B), that is, the gradation characteristics of the image forming apparatus. FIG. FIG. 11B is a diagram showing a
It is desirable that the relationship between the input image signal and the output image signal output based on the input image signal is linear like the target gradation characteristic 1102. However, depending on the reading characteristics of the
In contrast, the
Hereinafter, the tone correction control for creating the
First, in step S1201, the
Next, in step S1203, the
As described above, the tone correction control as shown in FIG. 12 is performed for each color of the image forming apparatus, so that the
For example, as shown in FIG. 14A, the image forming apparatus having the gradation characteristic 1402 whose maximum density is lighter than the target density performs the above-described gradation correction control as shown in FIG. is there. In such a case, as shown in FIG. 14B, a
Here, when an image is formed with the image data converted by the created
Further, when an environmental change or a change in apparatus characteristics occurs such that the maximum density exceeds the target density, if the input image signal is converted by the
It should be noted that by frequently updating the γLUT, it is possible to hold the γLUT corresponding to environmental fluctuations and apparatus characteristic fluctuations. A pattern image having gradation is formed on the intermediate transfer belt 5 in order to frequently update the γLUT. The density of the pattern image is automatically detected by a toner sensor (not shown) facing the toner image forming surface of the intermediate transfer belt 5 and a γLUT is created based on the detected pattern image. This control is automatically performed by the image forming apparatus, and can be frequently performed without bothering the user. However, during control, image formation cannot be performed, and toner is consumed to form an image pattern. Therefore, a load is given to the user. Therefore, there is a limit to frequently performing this automatic gradation correction control.
Therefore, in this embodiment, when the maximum density value of the gradation characteristic is not obtained as in the gradation characteristic 1401 in the above-described gradation correction control, based on the gradation characteristic curve before the γLUT is created. Create a corrected tone characteristic of the curve. A γLUT is created based on the corrected gradation characteristics. This reduces the above-mentioned image defects.
FIG. 3 is a conceptual diagram of processing performed when creating a corrected gradation characteristic performed in the gradation correction control according to the present embodiment. Similar to the conventional gradation correction control, the
When the
Further, the
The output image density D [Si] of the correction area ΔS is increased based on the following formula to improve the gradation characteristics of the correction area ΔS. In order to obtain the curve of the gradation characteristic 302 from the curve of the gradation characteristic 301, for example, the following arithmetic expression is used.
The gradation characteristic 301 is corrected based on Expression 01, and a new corrected gradation characteristic 302 is obtained (see FIG. 3). The corrected gradation characteristic 302 is a characteristic obtained by replacing the density D [Si] of the correction area ΔS (192 to 255) described above with the calculated correction density D ′ [Si] with respect to the
In the present embodiment, the corrected gradation characteristic 302 is created in the entire area of the input image signal. However, the following method may be employed. That is, the correction gradation characteristic is detected in the correction area ΔS, a first γLUT (first conversion table) is created based on the correction gradation characteristic, and the first gradation table is based on the gradation characteristic in areas other than the correction area. 2 γLUTs (second conversion table) are created. The input image signal may be converted based on the first γLUT and the second γLUT.
In this embodiment, the correction area is set. However, the correction gradation characteristic curve is created based on the gradation characteristic curve of the entire area (input image signals 0 to 255) without setting the correction area.
5 and 6 are control flows performed by the
The
In step S510, the
In step S512, the
In step S513, the
As a result of performing the above correction, it is possible to generate a
In the present embodiment, compared to the conventional control in which the converted γLUT is converted to create a new γLUT, a corrected gradation characteristic 302 is created based on the original gradation characteristic 301, and the
By using this
In the present embodiment, the correction gradation characteristic is created from the gradation characteristic and the γLUT is created based on the correction gradation characteristic. However, the γLUT creation method is not limited to this.
For example, in a situation where the maximum density does not reach the target density as shown in FIG. 14, first, the gradation characteristic 1401 is detected, and the
(Second Embodiment)
In the image forming apparatus shown in the first embodiment, the correction region is set based on the original gradation characteristic 301 and Ss is a preset input image signal value (Si = 192 in the first embodiment). An example was described. When the correction area ΔS is fixed as described above, there is a possibility that the gradation characteristics of individual image forming apparatuses cannot be flexibly handled. In particular, since the shape of the gradation characteristics on the middle / high density side of the image forming apparatus changes greatly depending on environmental conditions, time, etc., it is not always necessary to perform correction for the area after the predetermined correction area ΔS. It is not always possible to suppress the saturation of γLUT in the concentration region. Therefore, in the present embodiment, the correction area ΔS is configured to be variably set according to the
In the present embodiment, the inclination of the original gradation characteristic 301 is detected, and the input image signal value that makes the inclination equal to or smaller than a predetermined value is adopted as the above-described Ss. Then, the gradation characteristic 301 is corrected in the correction region ΔS between Ss and Se (= 255), and the corrected gradation characteristic 302 is created.
In the present embodiment, the gradient of the gradation characteristic 301 is detected as follows. Since the input image signal is 8 bits, Si is 0 to 255, and the corresponding output image density is D [0] to D [255]. In this embodiment, the inclination Ki in step S817 is detected by the following general inclination calculation method. That is, using the input signal Si of interest and the concentrations D [Si] and D [Si + 8] corresponding to the input signal Si + 8 after 8 levels,
The slope Ki of the concentration D [Si] with respect to the input signal Si in the interval of the
The determination of the inclination Ki is performed until 0 ≦ Si ≦ 192. If Ki does not become smaller than a predetermined threshold value Kth (details will be described later) in this range, the correction start point is a predetermined correction start point Ss = 192 is adopted. The range for determining the inclination Ki may be 0 ≦ Si ≦ 255.
8 to 10 show the flow of this embodiment. Since FIG. 8 is the same as the control flow of FIG. 5 described in the first embodiment, detailed description thereof is omitted. As shown in FIG. 8, as in the first embodiment, after calculating the
The control flow in step S812 in FIG. 9 will be described with reference to FIG. In step S812, the inclination of the output image density D [Si] with respect to the input image signal Si of the original gradation characteristic 310 of the image forming apparatus obtained in step S805 of FIG. 8 is detected. In step S815, the
When the tone characteristic 301 does not include noise, in step S816, the
If it is determined in step S818 that the slope Ki is larger than the threshold value Kth, control proceeds to step S820. If the
Henceforth, steps S812-S814 are based on the control flow of FIG. 9, and the control flow after step S814 is the same as the control flow of step S807-step S808 of FIG.
In the present embodiment, as a method of setting Ss, a method of detecting the gradient Ki of the density gradation characteristic as shown in Expression (02) and comparing it with a specific threshold value Kth is shown. However, other methods for detecting the shape, change rate, and inflection point of the density characteristic may be used as long as Ss is obtained dynamically.
As described above, even when the automatic gradation correction is performed in a state where the density gradation characteristic is lighter than the target density, it is possible to suppress image defects due to gradation collapse. Further, it is possible to reduce image defects and apparatus failures caused by an increase in the amount of applied toner due to subsequent environmental changes and temporal changes of the image forming apparatus.
