このような交換作業においては、装着者にとって、紙おむつの取り外し及び装着に多大な負担を強いるものであるとともに、パッドを出し入れする際にパッドが肌に擦れて肌を傷付けるおそれがある。また、特に介護用途においては、被介護者にとってみれば局部を他人にみせることになり、自尊心を傷つけ精神的な苦痛を伴う。さらに、パッドが排泄液を吸収しても、紙おむつの取り外し及び装着に多大な負担がかかるので、介護者が頻繁に確認するのについおっくうとなる。
このような問題点を解決するものとして、被介護者の局部を露出させることがなく吸収体部分を交換するための技術が提案されている（例えば特許文献２参照）。この場合、被介護者の自尊心を傷つけ精神的な苦痛を与えずに、吸収機能を更新することができる。
