Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method for producing an organic electroluminescent element and an organic electroluminescent element, and is used particularly for a display or display element for a mobile phone, various light sources, etc., from low luminance to high luminance for light source applications. The present invention relates to an organic electroluminescent element which is an electroluminescent element driven in a wide luminance range.
An organic electroluminescent element is a light-emitting device that utilizes the electroluminescence phenomenon of solid fluorescent or phosphorescent substances, and is partially put into practical use as a small display.
Organic electroluminescent devices can be classified into several groups depending on the material used for the light emitting layer. One typical example is a low molecular weight organic electroluminescent device using a low molecular weight organic compound in the light emitting layer, which is mainly produced by vacuum deposition. The other is a polymer organic electroluminescent device using a polymer compound in the light emitting layer.
Polymer organic electroluminescent devices can be formed by spin coating, ink-jet, printing, etc. by using a solution in which the material constituting each functional layer is dissolved. It is attracting attention as a technology that can be expected to increase the area. Especially for the printing method, compared to the spin coating method, the material utilization efficiency is remarkably superior, the blue, red, and green light-emitting materials are excellently applied separately. It is attracting attention because it is easy.
A typical polymer organic electroluminescent device is produced by laminating a plurality of functional layers such as a charge injection layer and a light emitting layer between an anode and a cathode. Below, the structure of the typical polymer organic electroluminescent element and its preparation procedure are demonstrated.
例えば図18に示すように、まず陽極111としてのITO(インジウム錫酸化物)と画素規制層114を成膜したガラス基板100上に電荷注入層126としてのPEDOT:PSS(ポリチオフェンとポリスチレンスルホン酸の混合物:以下PEDOTと記載する)薄膜をスピンコートなどによって成膜する。
For example, as shown in FIG. 18, first, PEDOT: PSS (polythiophene and polystyrene sulfonic acid as a charge injection layer 126) is formed on a
On the PEDOT layer, polyphenylene vinylene (hereinafter referred to as PPV) and a derivative thereof, or polyfluorene and a derivative thereof are formed as a
Thus, the polymer organic electroluminescent device has an excellent feature that it can be produced by a simple process, and is expected to be applied to various uses.
In the case of forming a color display device or the like using such an organic electroluminescent element, it is necessary to use a plurality of types of materials for the light emitting layer and to separate them.
For example, the printing method is an excellent method for colorization because a functional material layer having a light emitting function can be formed in a desired region. However, the ink swells up, peels off, or escapes. There was a problem.
Moreover, since the PEDT surface is a hydrophilic surface, when a paste containing an organic functional material prepared using an organic solvent is applied onto the PEDT film by a printing method, the film becomes non-uniform after drying and the film thickness distribution is non-uniform. There was sometimes. When PEDT is used, it is necessary to modify the surface of the PEDT with plasma treatment, a surfactant, or the like, which may lead to a decrease in performance or an increase in cost.
In the case of an organic electroluminescent element, if the thickness of the light emitting layer is not uniform, electric field concentration occurs in a thin region, which may cause deterioration.
In the above structure, a MoO 3 film having a thickness of about 20 nm is used, and a functional layer such as a light emitting layer is formed thereon.
By the way, in a device such as an optical head, miniaturization and high integration of elements have progressed, and a thin film transistor is formed on a glass substrate using an amorphous silicon layer or the like, and a driving circuit such as a light detection element or a switching transistor is formed. A method has been proposed in which an element portion such as an organic electroluminescent element (electroluminescent element) is laminated on the upper layer, and the integration has been advanced.
In the case of such a structure, selectively forming a pattern of a functional layer such as a light emitting layer is an important problem in preventing contamination of the element portion.
In addition, in an optical head or the like in which light sources of different colors are arranged at high density, it is necessary to arrange light emitting layer patterns of different materials at high density in order to prevent color mixing.
However, in the coating method, it is necessary to take measures such as forming a recess having a depth that does not allow ink to flow into the underlayer, or using lithography.
In addition, in the ink jet method, it is necessary to form a pattern by selectively performing plasma processing on a necessary region. In the case of plasma processing, the edge of the pattern is concentrated and a portion having a high plasma concentration is formed, and a large amount of ink is generated. In order to obtain a uniform film thickness due to differences in evaporation rate of the solvent depending on the application part and difference in affinity with the base, etc. It is necessary to manage the atmosphere.
Each method requires a special mask pattern and has problems in both manufacturing workability and high density.
Under such circumstances, there is an increasing need for highly precise patterning of functional layers such as a light emitting layer when miniaturization is accompanied by high density and high integration of organic electroluminescent elements.
In particular, an optical head formed by integrating a driving circuit such as a switching transistor, a photodetecting element, and an organic electroluminescent element as a light emitting element on the same substrate, and a multicolor in which light emitting portions of respective colors are arranged. In light-emitting elements and the like, there is a high demand for forming a functional layer pattern by patterning by a printing method.
Conventionally, since organic semiconductors have a low charge mobility, it has been said that good light emission cannot be obtained in organic electroluminescent devices unless they are made as thin films of about 100 nm.
The present inventors have tried to form such a thin light emitting layer by a printing method, but the ink repelled and it was difficult to put it to practical use (Patent Document 1).
In particular, on the first electrode made of ITO, which has translucency, there are protrusions of ITO itself and attached dust, etc., which causes a decrease in pattern accuracy and a short circuit between the electrodes. This is a major factor for the decline.
Furthermore, ink remains in unnecessary areas, which not only tends to be a path for moisture and oxide materials to enter from the outside, but also may cause deterioration in characteristics of other areas such as the drive circuit section. .

The present invention provides an organic electroluminescent device comprising a set of electrodes and a plurality of functional layers formed between the electrodes and including a layer having a light emitting function made of at least one organic semiconductor. In the method, the functional layer includes an inorganic oxide layer, and the step of forming the layer having a light emitting function includes a step of forming a film on the inorganic oxide layer by a printing method.
When trying to form a layer having a light emitting function by a printing method, the pattern accuracy could not be obtained as it was. Although the present inventors have already proposed in the above-mentioned
In the present invention, a polymer layer (light emitting layer) is formed by a printing method on the upper layer of the inorganic oxide layer. For example, the method is limited to forming a layer having a direct light emitting function on the inorganic oxide layer. Is not to be done.
For example, some inorganic oxide layers have the effect of improving the charge injection effect. However, in order to add an electron blocking function or the like, the inorganic oxide layer is formed on the inorganic oxide layer and between the light emitting layer, for example, TFB. Other layers such as may be provided.
As its effect, the inorganic oxide layer originally has the effect of smoothing the surface of the anode electrode (ITO), and the thickness of, for example, TFB applied on the inorganic oxide layer is extremely uniform. The And since the light emitting layer formed by printing on TFB can use a solvent such as xylene and toluene in common, the wettability of each other is very good. As a result, the film thickness of TFB and the light emitting layer is as follows. Even when the printing method is used, both are extremely highly uniform.

With this configuration, the contact angle with respect to the inorganic oxide layer is set to 60 degrees or less, so that the wettability with the ink is good, and the ink pattern is accurately formed on the inorganic oxide layer. If it exceeds 60 degrees, the wettability becomes poor.

(Embodiment 1)
FIG. 1 shows a configuration diagram of a polymer organic electroluminescent element in an embodiment of the present invention.
In the present embodiment, the base layer is made of MoO 3 , the surface roughness is set to
That is, as shown in FIG. 1, the organic electroluminescent element of this embodiment includes a
When a DC voltage or a DC current is applied with the
According to the organic electroluminescent element of the present embodiment, a highly precise light emitting layer pattern can be formed by a printing method even in the case of high integration and miniaturization, so that photolithography is not used. Therefore, it is possible to realize a fine pattern without contamination. Therefore, even in a light emitting device or a display device having a configuration in which a large number of organic electroluminescent elements are two-dimensionally arranged, good light emission characteristics can be obtained, and a highly reliable element can be obtained even at high temperatures.
Next, the manufacturing process of the organic electroluminescent element of this invention is demonstrated.
First, an electrode layer made of an ITO thin film is formed on the
Finally, the
As described above, according to the method of the present invention, since the
The molybdenum oxide thin film in this embodiment is an amorphous thin film formed by vacuum deposition. The environment during vacuum deposition is a reducing atmosphere, and molybdenum oxide undergoes reduction in the process of being heated and sublimated and deposited on the substrate. The reduced molybdenum oxide yields several oxides with smaller oxidation numbers in addition to hexavalent MoO 3 . They are, for example, tetravalent MoO 2 and trivalent Mo 2 O 3 . Since receiving is equivalent to receiving electrons, an oxide having a reduced valence is more likely to release electrons than an oxide having a higher valence, that is, more likely to receive holes. This is equivalent to having a higher energy level.
In addition to forming a single polymer layer on an inorganic oxide layer by a printing method, a plurality of organic layers are formed on another plate and then two or more layers are formed at a time. Including the case of transferring onto the inorganic oxide layer.

Next, examples of the present invention will be described.
The structure is the same as that shown in FIG. 1, and will be described with reference to FIG.
The organic electroluminescent element of Example 1 includes a
This luminescent material can be purchased from, for example, Nippon Sebel Hegner.
According to this configuration, the background of the pixel regulation layer can be smoothed, and even if the thickness of the pixel regulation layer is reduced by that amount, sufficient insulation can be maintained. As a result of the reduction in the level difference caused, it is possible to make the film thickness distribution of the layer having the light emitting function more uniform. Also, there was no short circuit of the pixels. Here, the pixel regulation layer may be a light shielding material instead of an insulating material. Moreover, even if it has both the light-shielding property and the insulating property, the light emission region can be well regulated, and the pixels can be defined. According to the present invention, the

According to this configuration, the base at the time of forming the light emitting layer is smoothed to
Next, in this organic electroluminescent element, a sample was prepared by changing the film thickness in order to observe the characteristic change due to the film thickness of the MoO 3 layer. Here, the
For each sample, an ITO film is formed on the surface of the light-transmitting
As described above, the surface roughness of MoO 3 was changed to create 100 elements (pixels), and the lifetime of 100 elements was measured under a constant luminance of 10,000 cd / m 2 to evaluate the variation in the lifetime. .
The lifetime in this case was defined as the elapsed time until the current value input to the element reached four times the initial value.
As a result, it was found that the light emitting layer formed on the buffer layer having a surface roughness of MoO 3 of about 200 nm had pattern unevenness. When letterpress printing is performed on the base layer having such a rough surface and the light emitting layer is formed, the ink wettability is high, resulting in uneven patterning of the buffer layer, and the sample R101 has an average life. 11 hours, the minimum value was 0.5 hours, and the maximum value was 18 hours. For samples R106 and R110, the average lifetime was 9 hours and 6 hours, respectively, and the minimum and maximum values showed the same variation as sample R101.
On the other hand, the light emitting layer formed on the buffer layer having a surface roughness of MoO 3 of about 20 nm has little pattern unevenness, and the sample D102 using MoO 3 as the
Further, the number of shorted elements in the pixel corresponding to each of 100 elements was examined. Whether or not it was short-circuited was defined as short-circuiting an element in which no light was emitted within 10 minutes during the life evaluation and a large current flowed.
The number of shorted pixels for sample R101-D115 was measured and recorded in the table.
The element using MoO 3 with a small surface roughness of the present embodiment as the underlayer of the light emitting layer has a smaller number of shorts than a sample using MoO 3 with a small surface roughness, and the number of shorts as the film becomes thicker. It is clear that there will be less.
In addition, the inorganic oxide layer improves the charge injection effect, but in order to further add an electron blocking function or the like, another layer such as TFB is formed on the inorganic oxide layer and between the light emitting layer. A layer may be provided.
Thereby, the inorganic oxide layer originally has the effect of smoothing the surface of the anode electrode (ITO), and the thickness of, for example, TFB applied on the inorganic oxide layer is extremely uniform. And since the light emitting layer formed by printing on TFB can use a solvent such as xylene and toluene in common, the wettability of each other is very good. As a result, the film thickness of TFB and the light emitting layer is as follows. Even when the printing method is used, both are extremely highly uniform.

The results of measuring the light emission characteristics at this time are shown in FIG. Here, the horizontal axis represents position, and the vertical axis represents emission intensity. As is apparent from this figure, it has a rectangular emission spectrum and shows good emission characteristics. Compared with the first embodiment shown in FIG. 2, the emission spectrum is slightly steeper.
Next, an experiment for confirming the effect of the present invention was performed by changing the film thickness of MoO 3 in this structure. In this embodiment, a printing method is used.
First, a polyimide film is formed on a glass substrate or ITO substrate made of an ITO thin film on which the
On the
As a result, a bell-shaped light emission profile was obtained for the sample R201 having a small MoO 3 film thickness and a large surface roughness, whereas the sample using MoO 3 as shown in FIG. A profile was obtained.
The reason why the light emission profile was bell-shaped with the rough surface roughness was that the light emission layer had uneven thickness in the pixel, resulting in a change in light emission efficiency and a change in light emission profile. I think that the. On the other hand, it is considered that the uniformity of film thickness is improved because the light emission profile of the pixel using MoO 3 is rectangular.
Next, these were adjusted to have an initial luminance of 12000 cd / m 2 and subjected to a life test. As a result, the sample 201 was halved in 30 minutes, whereas the sample using MoO 3 showed a maximum half-life of 100 hr, and the surface roughness and thickness dependency were small.
On the other hand, as a result of the obtained life evaluation, the maximum value of the life was about 100 hr. However, when MoO 3 was thin, many short-circuited elements were seen in the middle of the life, whereas 40 nm, 80 nm, and 120 nm. There was no short-circuited element having a thickness of.
The reason for this is that when the MoO 3 is thin, there are irregularities due to microcrystals on the ITO surface, the influence of dust on the process, etc., whereas when the thick film MoO 3 of the present invention is used, the surface that may cause a short circuit It is presumed that the protrusions and dust are covered with MoO 3 so that the light emission characteristics do not change. However, the factor is still unknown. However, from the experimental facts, it was confirmed that the sample using the thick MoO 3 had high reliability.

In this optical head, as shown in FIG. 6, an

In order to the MoO 3 layer to the desired surface condition, by adjusting the film forming conditions such as film formation at low temperatures, it can be realized. It can also be easily realized by adjusting the surface roughness by forming a pixel regulating layer and performing surface treatment such as heat treatment after patterning or simultaneously with patterning.

Further, depending on the application, a material that transmits only a specific wavelength, a material that converts light into a specific wavelength having a light-light conversion function, or the like may be used. The substrate is preferably insulative, but is not particularly limited, and may have conductivity depending on a range or use that does not hinder driving of the

陽極111は、例えばITO(インジウム錫酸化物)から成る。陽極111の構成材料としてはITOの他にIZO(亜鉛ドープ酸化インジウム)、ATO(SbをドープしたSnO2)、AZO(AlをドープしたZnO)、ZnO、SnO2、In2O3等を用いることができる。

FIG. 6 is a configuration plan view showing the configuration in the vicinity of the light detection element of the optical head using the organic electroluminescent element in the third embodiment of the present invention.
As shown in FIG. 6, the optical head using the organic electroluminescent element of

As shown in FIGS. 5 and 6, the optical head using the organic electroluminescent element according to the third embodiment mainly includes a
Furthermore, since the element region A R of the light-detecting
Next, a light amount correction circuit used in the optical head of the present invention will be described. As shown in an equivalent circuit in FIG. 7, the light amount correction circuit is formed by being integrated on the
Here, the photodetection element is photoelectrically converted in the

In addition, since it is very important to detect the output of the light detection element with high accuracy, it is important to detect the thin film transistor constituting the light detection element in an OFF state. Therefore, a desired detection accuracy can be obtained by adjusting the gate potential of the light detection element.

As a modification of the third embodiment of the present invention, as shown in FIG. 10, a
In the above optical head, the anode as the
With this configuration, the gate electric field is applied with high efficiency, and the light emitting layer itself of the electroluminescent element is formed on a flat surface. It can be avoided. At this time, since the light emitting region does not become a light emitting region on the source / drain region, the light emitting region and the light emitting region can be substantially matched, and a fine line light emitting region can be obtained. Therefore, it is possible to avoid crosstalk when the pitch is increased due to miniaturization. Thus, since a small exposure spot (line) can be obtained in the sub-scanning direction, it is effective for multi-value reproduction based on area modulation.
The exposure head and the photoconductor move relative to each other in the sub-scanning direction, and the exposure area changes with this relative movement. Considering only from the aspect of area modulation, it is ideal that the exposure spot shape is a single line having no width in the sub-scanning direction. However, the light emission luminance in this case must be infinite. That is, in this case, since the light emitting area in the sub-scanning direction becomes small, the light emitting area becomes small, and the exposure condition becomes strict in terms of energy, so it is necessary to increase the luminance.
(Embodiment 4)
Next, FIG. 11 of the present invention is a cross-sectional view in the case where the organic electroluminescent element used in the optical head has a top emission structure. In contrast to the bottom emission structure, the top emission structure is a type in which light output from the
When this structure is adopted, as shown in the figure, among the light generated in the

Hereinafter, the description will be continued returning to FIG.

(Embodiment 6)
Next, a display device using the organic electroluminescent element of the present invention will be described. The display device of this embodiment is an active circuit in which a drive circuit is formed in each pixel as shown in FIG. 15 as an equivalent circuit diagram of the active matrix display device, as shown in FIG. 16 and as a perspective view in FIG. This constitutes a matrix type display device.
This display device has an equivalent circuit diagram in FIG. 15 and a layout explanatory diagram in FIG. 16, and an organic electroluminescent element (electroluminescent) forming a pixel, two TFTs (T1, T2), and a capacitor C Are arranged in the vertical and horizontal directions, and the gate electrodes of the first TFTs (T1) of the respective drive circuits arranged in the horizontal direction are connected to the scanning lines to provide scanning signals, and are arranged in the vertical direction. However, the drain electrode of the first TFT of each drive circuit is connected to the data line to supply a light emission signal. A driving power source (not shown) is connected to one end of the electroluminescent element (electroluminescent), and one end of the capacitor C is grounded.

In the organic electroluminescent device of the present invention, the charge injection layer may contain an oxynitride.
In the organic electroluminescent device of the present invention, the charge injection layer may contain an oxynitride of a transition metal.
For example, ruthenium (Ru) oxynitride crystal Ru4Si 2 O 7 N 2 and the like are extremely heat-resistant (1500 ° C.) and stable, and therefore can be applied as a charge injection layer by forming a thin film. . In this case, the film can be formed by performing a heat treatment after forming the film by a sol-gel method.
In addition, barium sialon (BaSiAlON), calcium sialon (CaSiAlON), cerium sialon (CeSiAlON), lithium sialon (LiSiAlON), magnesium sialon (MgSiAlON), scandium sialon (ScSiAlON), yttrium sialon (YSiAlON), erbium sialon (E) Further, sialons containing elements of group IA, IIA, IIIB such as neodymium sialon (NdSiAlON), or oxynitrides such as multi-element sialon are applicable. In addition, lanthanum silicon oxynitrate (LaSiON), lanthanum europium silicon oxynitride (LaEuSi 2 O 2 N 3 ), silicon oxynitride (SiON 3 ), and the like are also applicable. Since these are mostly insulators, it is necessary to reduce the film thickness to about 1 nm to 5 nm. These compounds have a large exciton confinement effect and may be formed on the side where electrons are injected.
In the organic electroluminescent device of the present invention, the charge injection layer may include a complex oxide containing a transition metal.
Although the reason is not clear, when the composite oxide containing a transition metal is used for the charge injection layer, the emission intensity can be greatly improved.
In addition, there are a great many types of complex oxides, and many of them have electronically interesting properties. Specific examples include the following compounds, but these are merely examples.
For example, barium titanate (BaTiO 3 ), strontium titanate (SrTiO 3 ), calcium titanate (CaTiO 3 ), potassium niobate (KNbO 3 ), bismuth iron oxide (BiFeO 3 ),
Lithium niobate (LiNbO 3), sodium vanadate (Na 3 VO 4), vanadium iron (FeVO 3), titanate vanadium (TiVO 3), chromic acid vanadium (CrVO 3), vanadium, nickel (NiVO 3), magnesium vanadate (MgVO 3), calcium vanadate (CaVO 3), vanadium lanthanum (LaVO 3), molybdate vanadium (VMoO 5), molybdate vanadium (V 2 MoO 8), lithium vanadate (LiV 2 O 5 ), Magnesium silicate (Mg2SiO4), magnesium silicate (MgSiO 3 ), zirconium titanate (ZrTiO 4 ), strontium titanate (SrTiO 3 ), lead magnesium oxide (PbMgO 3 ), lead niobate (PbNbO 3 ), barium borate (BaB 2 O 4), lanthanum chromate (LaCrO 3), lithium titanate (LiTi 2 O 4), copper lanthanum (LaCuO 4), zinc titanate (ZnTiO 3 , It is possible such as calcium tungstate (CaWO 4).
Although any of these can be used to carry out the present invention, barium titanate (BaTiO 3 ) is preferably used. BaTiO 3 is a typical dielectric and is a complex oxide with high insulating properties, but it is possible to inject carriers when used in thin films based on the results of various experiments. I understood. BaTiO 3 and strontium titanate (SrTiO 3 ) are stable as compounds and have a very large dielectric constant, so that efficient carrier injection can be performed. For film formation, a sputtering method, a sol-gel method, a CVD method, or the like can be selected as appropriate.

With this configuration, the escape of electrons can be blocked, and the electrons can effectively contribute to light emission in the layer having a light emitting function.
In the organic electroluminescent device of the present invention, the buffer layer may include a polymer layer.
With this configuration, since a buffer layer such as TFB can be formed by a coating method, the buffer layer can be formed without a vacuum process.
In the organic electroluminescent device of the present invention, the anode is formed on a translucent substrate, the charge injection layer has a hole injection layer formed on the anode, and the light emitting function. Including an electron injection layer formed on the layer having a light emitting function so as to face the hole injection layer through a layer, and a cathode formed on the electron injection layer Including things. That is, the organic electroluminescent element of the present invention includes an anode formed on a translucent substrate, a hole injection layer formed on the anode, a buffer layer formed on the hole injection layer, It may be composed of an electron injection layer formed on the layer having the light emitting function and a cathode so as to face the hole injection layer through the layer having the light emitting function.
With this configuration, a buffer layer such as an electron blocking layer is formed on the hole injection layer side where electrons are likely to escape, and a layer having a light emitting function is formed on these layers. It is possible to prevent the layer having damage from being damaged during the formation of the hole injection layer.
Here, the cathode is preferably formed as a multilayer structure in which a layer having a low work function such as a calcium (Ca) layer or a barium (Ba) layer for facilitating electron injection is arranged on the light emitting layer side.

In the above embodiment, printing has been described. However, the present invention can be applied to various printing methods as described below.
1) Letterpress printing method One of the printing methods using the unevenness of the plate, in which the non-image area is concave and the image area is convex, and ink is applied to the protrusion and transferred to the substrate. So-called letterpress printing (printing is combined with letterpress, photographic letterpress, line drawing letterpress, ruled lines, etc.) is this type of plate. Printing using rubber or resin letterpress is widely performed. Unevenness may be formed on the printed substrate surface due to pressure during printing. Another feature is that a marginal zone can be seen in the printed characters.
2) Planographic printing method A method in which a portion where the ink is attached and a portion where the ink is not attached is created on the plate, and the ink is placed on the image line portion and transferred to the substrate. (In fact, intermediate transfer is performed with a rubber cylinder, etc. = offset printing) Many modern Japanese publications are printed with lithographic offset printing. Unlike letterpress and intaglio, it is easy to find mistakes because the plate is not reversed. Photosetting is one of the reasons why offset printing has become popular in Japan. This is because plate making by photosetting is indispensable to make a plate-making film (collection) as a subsequent process, and offset printing is optimal as long as this process is performed.
3) Intaglio printing method One of the printing methods that uses the unevenness of the plate, and is a method in which the ink on the convex portions, which are non-image areas, is scraped off and the ink attached to the concave portions is transferred to the substrate. In contrast to other printing methods, illusions are used to express shades of gravure, whereas shades can be changed by increasing or decreasing the amount of ink due to differences in the depth of the recesses, so that the reproducibility of photographs, etc. Photo page is now called gravure because of its excellent and extensive use. The plate is durable and suitable for mass printing. In the case of printing in a single color, intaglio printing is often performed.
4) Stencil printing method A system in which a large number of fine holes are made in a plate (oil paper, etc.), and the ink passing therethrough is transferred to a substrate by pressure. It can be realized with simple equipment. In addition to printing characters and images, it is widely used as a technique for forming films of various functional materials on the surface of an object. In one example, parts such as a color cathode ray tube shadow mask and a liquid crystal display color filter are manufactured using printing technology.
