Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a display device having a cell structure surrounded by a frame shape by a seal pattern.
The panel assembly process in the manufacturing process of a typical liquid crystal panel as a display device with a cell structure surrounded by a frame shape by a seal pattern is mainly the role of the drive element substrate and color filter created based on the glass substrate For the counter substrate, there are a step of bonding at intervals, a step of cutting to a predetermined panel size, a step of injecting liquid crystal within the interval, and a step of sealing the liquid crystal injection port. In order to bond the substrates, a shape that surrounds the display portion of the panel with respect to the size of the panel, mainly on the counter substrate, of the driving element substrate and the counter substrate, and further has a liquid crystal injection port A seal pattern is formed. Two methods are generally used: a screen printing method and a seal dispensing method in which a pattern is drawn by nozzle scanning. Next, the other substrate is bonded to this substrate through a seal pattern, and heat is applied while applying pressure to both substrates to cure the seal pattern. Next, liquid crystal is injected into the space between the substrates for each pair of display areas from the injection port, and then a sealing agent is injected into the injection port from the outside to seal the injection port.
In the process of assembling the panel of such a liquid crystal panel, when forming a seal pattern on the counter substrate, the bottom of the pattern is not flat due to the presence of an alignment mark or the like on the substrate as disclosed in
Although not described in
However, in recent years, with the progress of narrowing the frame with a small panel, there has been a case where the seal pattern interferes with a concave region present in the drive element substrate. In such a case, although it can be formed with a uniform width when the seal pattern is applied and formed on the color filter, the seal material is unevenly distributed due to the concave region of the drive element substrate when bonded to the drive element substrate. Transformed. As a result, there arises a problem that the width of the seal pattern becomes unstable.
Recently, a transflective display device in which a reflective electrode and a transmissive electrode are combined as a driving element substrate has become a mainstream display device used outdoors. In this case, a method of forming irregularities on the surface with an organic insulating film and irregularly reflecting with a reflective electrode is often used. Since this organic insulating film is formed with a thickness of 2 to 3 μm, the step between the recessed region formed by the opening of the insulating film and the other region is also 1 μm or more, and when it is larger, it is 2 to 3 μm. There are many cases. In general display devices, the seal pattern is deformed so that the distance between the substrates becomes several μm. In the case of such an organic insulating film, the deformation amount of the seal pattern is large between the portion with and without the step. Different. As a result, the problem of instability in the width of the seal pattern becomes prominent. In severe cases, generation of bubbles due to peeling of the seal, display unevenness due to external contamination, and the like may occur due to changes over time of the panel.
In addition, the opening of the insulating film is often formed near the corner portion of the seal pattern due to restrictions on arrangement in the panel. The corner portion of the seal pattern has a curved shape or a bent shape, and has a more complicated shape than the straight portion. Further, a paste-like conductive material for electrically connecting the substrates is applied to the electrode portion on the electrode element side, and the electrode portion is deformed by pressure so as to overlap the seal pattern applied to the counter substrate. Interfere with When the width of the seal pattern becomes too wide and extends to the electrode portion, the seal pattern is generally not conductive, which hinders conduction by the conductive material. As a result, display failure and reliability failure are caused. For these reasons, it has been impossible to manufacture a display device having a stable quality unless the width and shape of the seal pattern are determined and formed very strictly.
In most of the openings formed near these corners, the seal pattern is in contact with only a part of the openings. In such a case, it is unclear how much the width of the seal pattern should be designed to finally obtain an appropriate width of the seal pattern only by the technique described in
The present invention has been made in order to solve the above-described problems, such as bubbles in a display device caused by an area that is more concave than other areas existing on the surface of a substrate on which signal input terminals are arranged. It is an object of the present invention to provide a manufacturing method capable of preventing the occurrence of quality defects such as display unevenness.
A first substrate on which signal input terminals are disposed, and a second substrate disposed to face the first substrate, and the first pattern is formed by a seal pattern provided on a periphery of the second substrate. When manufacturing a display device in which the substrate and the second substrate are bonded to each other, the first substrate surface has a step portion of 1 μm or more provided on the surface of the first substrate and is more concave than the other regions. The seal pattern is arranged in contact with the region, and the width of the seal pattern in the portion corresponding to the concave region is larger than the width of the seal pattern formed in the region having no stepped portion of 1 μm or more. A sealing material is applied to the first substrate or the second substrate.
According to the present invention, when manufacturing a display device having a cell structure surrounded by a seal pattern, the width of the seal pattern including a portion in contact with a concave region present in a substrate on which signal input terminals are arranged. Since the width of the seal pattern in the finished state can be controlled by designing the width to an appropriate width, it is possible to realize a display device with a narrow frame that does not cause quality defects such as bubbles and display unevenness.
In this embodiment, an example in which the present invention is applied to a liquid crystal panel will be described as an example of a display device. 1 and 2 are diagrams for explaining an embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 1 (a) is a plan view of the entire liquid crystal panel, and FIG. 1 (b) is a view of a portion C in FIG. 1 (a). FIG. 2A is an enlarged sectional view, FIG. 2A is a sectional view taken along the line AB in FIG. 1A, and FIG. 2B is a conceptual diagram showing an enlarged plan view of a portion D in FIG. It is a figure.
As shown in FIG. 1 (a) and FIG. 2 (a), two
A terminal 12 for signal input is formed at the end of the
The display device according to the present embodiment has the following structural features. First, in the
Here, the width of the seal pattern used in this specification is defined. FIG. 3 is an explanatory diagram of the definition and is a schematic diagram showing an example using the definition of the width.
The width of the seal pattern is defined as follows from the viewpoint that the role of the sealing
In addition, the organic EL (Electro-Luminescence) display device has the same cell structure, and from the viewpoint that the sealing material is used for the same purpose of blocking the outside air, the width of the sealing pattern is also defined in the same way as described above. I decided to.
Subsequently, a manufacturing process of the liquid crystal panel described above will be described. First, regarding the manufacturing process of the
As shown in FIG. 4, a
Subsequently, as shown in FIG. 5, the
Further, as shown in FIG. 6, an insulating
Finally, as shown in FIG. 7, by forming a reflective portion 30 of the
The reason why the organic insulating film is used as the insulating
Here, since the transflective liquid crystal panel has been described, the
As the organic insulating film, an organic insulating film having a thickness of 2.4 μm is formed here as a single layer, but it may be formed as two layers. A step of about 1 μm is effective as the uneven shape of the reflector, and a film thickness of 2 to 3 μm is preferable in order to effectively reduce the parasitic capacitance between layers. There is a method in which one organic insulating film is formed to a thickness of 1 μm, a step of 1 μm is formed, and then an organic insulating film of 1 to 2 μm is additionally formed to form two layers. When this method is used, the requirements of both the uneven shape and the parasitic capacitance can be satisfied, and the uneven shape of the reflector can be controlled to a comparatively gentle shape. In any case, the film thickness of the organic insulating film is more effective at least 1 μm or more and 2 or 3 μm. An effect equivalent to that of the present invention is also obtained by setting the step due to the opening in the insulating
Subsequently, the panel assembling process of the liquid crystal panel will be described with reference to FIGS. The
Next, the process of applying the sealing
In the screen printing, a
FIG. 12B shows an enlarged view of the
Next, the state of the seal pattern after application by printing, and the state after overlay and adhesion will be described with reference to FIG. (A) is the schematic diagram which showed the state after application | coating, (b) is the schematic diagram which showed the state after superposition | stacking and adhesion | attachment.
B L0/A≧L≧(1+B/A) L0/2の関係を満たしていることが判る。

Furthermore, after the
The operation of this embodiment will be described below. First, a phenomenon that occurs in a seal pattern that is in contact with the
Here, an explanation for estimating the necessary seal pattern width will be given with reference to schematic cross-sectional views in the vicinity of the seal pattern in FIGS.
The width of the seal pattern required at the time of application is determined by the final inter-substrate distance and the ratio of the area that is concave from the periphery. First, as a typical example, a case in which a half region on one side with respect to the width direction of the seal pattern covers a concave region and the other half on a region without a stepped portion is studied. In such a case, as shown in FIG. 15, the amount of the sealing material applied to both regions is the same before being deformed. Are considered equal. Subsequently, with respect to the state after the deformation, FIG. 16 shows a state where the step portion is present, and FIG. 17 shows a state where the step portion is not present. As shown in FIG. 16, when the distance between the substrates in the region without the stepped portion is A, the distance between the substrates in the recessed region is B, and the width of the seal pattern with the stepped portion as the boundary is La and Lb, respectively, La A And Lb B are considered to be equal. Therefore, it can be seen that the width of the seal pattern (represented by the sum of La and Lb) at the stepped portion shown in FIG. 16 is narrower than the width 2La at the portion without the stepped portion shown in FIG. Therefore, in order to ensure the same 2La width even in the case of the stepped portion after the deformation, it is necessary to realize the state of FIG. The required width in this case is that the area ratio of the seal part in FIGS. 17 and 18 (a) can be expressed as 2LaA to La (A + B). to the corresponding width L 0 (1 + B / a ) L 0/2 and it is learned. In this estimate, since the width is added only to the concave side, the finished width becomes a little thicker if the width is changed evenly. In addition, this estimate was made for a case where a half of the width of the seal pattern is applied to the concave region. However, as the ratio decreases, the effect of thinning becomes small, so the required width is (1 + B / A) L 0 There is no problem if / 2. On the other hand, when the ratio increases, the width during application needs to be larger than (1 + B / A) L 0/2 . In this case, as shown in FIG. 18 (b), it is a case where the entire area is concave. In this case, since the area ratio of the seal portion in FIGS. 17 and 18B can be expressed by 2La A to La B, BL 0 / with respect to the width L 0 corresponding to the region having no step portion at the time of application. It turns out that it becomes A. In order to ensure at least a width equal to that of the portion without the stepped portion even after the deformation, no more is necessary. Conversely, for example, as shown in FIG. 19A, in the case of a design with a small margin with respect to the application position of the
Based on the above examination, the distance between the substrates in the region without the stepped portion is A, the distance between the substrates in the recessed region is B, the width of the seal pattern corresponding to the region without the stepped portion is L 0 , of when the width L of the seal pattern of the portion corresponding to the region is concave, L ≧ (1 + B / a) L 0/2 of the sealing material so as satisfy the relation that is applied to one substrate, the finished In the liquid crystal panel, it is possible to ensure that the width of the seal pattern at the corner portion is equal to or greater than that at the corner portion.
Also, BL 0 / A ≧ L ≧ (1 + B / A) L 0/2 of the sealing material so as satisfy the relation that is applied to one substrate, in the finished liquid crystal panel, the seal pattern of the corner portion It is possible to secure the same width as that other than the corner portion, and it is possible to make it difficult to cause interference with the transfer material due to being excessively thick, and conduction failure associated therewith.

In this case, the inter-substrate distance A other than the corner portion of the seal pattern is set to A = 2.5 μm so that the liquid crystal can be driven at high speed, and the opening of the organic insulating film in the
Further, since the distance between the substrates is considerably smaller than that in the first embodiment, it is necessary to increase the degree of thickening the corner portion. Here, as the shape of the seal pattern that can effectively make the corner portion thicker, the line Lnoa on the outside of the substrate, which is the end face of the seal pattern, as shown in FIG. A shape composed of straight lines with multiple bends, such as a triangular shape added to the inner right-angled part, was selected. As a result, the width of the seal pattern including the portion in contact with the concave region is thicker than the width of the seal pattern in the region without the stepped portion, and instability such as narrowing of the width of the seal pattern due to the concave region. It never occurred.
As another modified example, as shown in FIG. 21 (b), a plurality of lines LNob outside the substrate, in which the triangle shape is removed from the right angle portion outside the seal pattern, are deleted from the right angle. a shape deformed into a straight line with a bent, B / AL 0 ≧ L ≧ (1 + B / a) L 0/2 to prevent it occurring interference or the like between the transfer material by adjusting so as satisfy also Can do.
The field sequential panel created as described above is low in cost because there is no color filter, and since RGB independent pixels are not necessary, the actual definition is tripled and the image quality is high. Also, since it operates at high speed, the display of moving images is smooth. At the same time, it was possible to realize a display device that is compact with a narrow frame and does not cause quality defects such as generation of bubbles and display unevenness.
Hereinafter, modifications of the display devices according to the first and second embodiments, mainly modifications of the shape of the corner portion of the seal pattern will be described. 22 to 25 schematically show the shapes after application of the sealing
The seal pattern of these shapes, the distance between the substrates in the region without the stepped portion is A, the distance between the substrates in the concave region is B, the width of the seal pattern corresponding to the region without the stepped portion. L 0, and the width of the seal pattern of the portion corresponding to the a concave area is L, so as satisfy the relation of L ≧ (1 + B / a ) L 0/2, more preferably BL 0 / a ≧ L ≧ (1 + B / a ) it is possible to obtain the same effect L 0/2 of the relevant formed to satisfy the first or second embodiment.
FIG. 26 shows an example of a general design seal pattern in which the width of the seal pattern does not change between the corner portion and the corner portion. As can be seen from the drawing, the line LNi on the substrate center side which is the end face of the seal pattern and the line LNo on the substrate outside, the arcs forming the two lines have the same center. In this way, when the line of the end face of the seal pattern is composed of straight lines and arcs, it is easier to design the
On the other hand, the shape of the corner portion of the seal pattern of the modification example shown in FIGS. 22 to 25 of the present embodiment corresponds to the line of the end face of the seal pattern made up of straight lines and arcs. The
Next, in
Here, the same components as those of the first embodiment are denoted by the same reference numerals, description thereof is omitted, and only different portions will be described. The difference from the first embodiment is that, as seen in the plan view of FIG. 27, the
Subsequently, only the difference between the manufacturing method of the liquid crystal panel described above and the manufacturing method of the first embodiment will be described. First, regarding the manufacturing process of the
Subsequently, a panel assembling process of the liquid crystal panel will be described with reference to FIGS. As shown in FIG. 29, a seal pattern is formed on the
Further, when printing the
As in this embodiment, the
Here, the
In the first, second, third, and fourth embodiments described above, after forming the seal pattern on the counter substrate, the display device is formed by bonding the concave region and the driving element substrate on which the signal input terminals are arranged. Since there is no concave region on the substrate to be coated when the seal pattern is formed, the seal pattern corresponding to the portion where the concave region finally comes into contact is predetermined. The method of forming so as to satisfy the conditions has been described. However, the effect of the present invention is equivalent even when a seal pattern is formed on the drive element substrate. In that case, when forming the seal pattern, the seal pattern including the portion in contact with the concave region should satisfy the same conditions and shape as those employed in the first, second, third, and fourth embodiments. The same effect can be realized by forming.
In the first, second, third, and fourth embodiments described above, a TFT using an amorphous silicon film as an active layer has been described as an example of a drive element. However, a TFT using a polysilicon film as an active layer, and Thin film diodes are also included in the drive elements, and include all other elements that can actively control signals. For liquid crystal panels using these drive elements, the same effect is obtained when there is a concave area on the substrate on which the signal input terminals are arranged and the seal pattern is in contact with the concave area. There is. In addition, the description has been given of the concave region of the electrode portion that electrically connects the counter substrate and the drive element substrate. However, the seal pattern is in contact with the concave region of the substrate on which the signal input terminals are arranged. In this case, the same effect is obtained particularly when the step of the concave region is as large as 1 μm or more.
Further, in the first, second, third, and fourth embodiments described above, the display device having the drive element has been described as an example. However, the signal may be generated even when the drive device has no special drive element such as a passive display device. The same effect is obtained in all cases where the seal pattern is in contact with the concave region of the substrate on which the input terminals are arranged.
Also, an organic EL (Electro-Luminescence) display device or the like has a first substrate on which signal input terminals are disposed and a second substrate disposed to face the first substrate, For those having a structure constituted by being bonded by a seal pattern provided on the periphery of the second substrate, it is an object of the present invention, and when the seal pattern is in contact with the concave region of the first substrate. All have the same effect.
