Abstract

Description

（発明の背景）
本発明は、インタラクティブテレビジョンプログラムガイドシステムに関する。より詳細には本発明は、有料プログラムを１つ以上のパッケージの一部として販売促進（promote）することを可能にする、プログラムガイドシステムに関する。
ケーブル、衛星、および放送テレビジョンシステムは、視聴者に多数のテレビジョンチャネルを提供する。伝統的には視聴者は、特定の時刻において放送されているプログラムを決定するために、印刷されたテレビジョンプログラムスケジュールを参照していた。より最近では、視聴者のテレビジョン上にテレビジョンプログラム情報を表示することを可能にする、インタラクティブな電子テレビジョンプログラムガイドが開発されている。例えば、Ｋｎｅｅらの米国特許第５，５８９，８９２号には、記憶されたテレビジョンプログラムスケジュール情報と、生プログラムのステータス情報を含むデータフィードとの両方にアクセスする、電子テレビジョンプログラムガイドスケジュールシステムが記載されている。
インタラクティブプログラムガイドは典型的には、セットトップボックス上で実現される。そのようなプログラムガイドは、ユーザがテレビジョンプログラムのリストを異なる表示フォーマットで見ることを可能にする。例えば、ユーザは、チャネル順のリストに整理されたプログラムリストの表を見たいかもしれない。あるいは、ユーザは、時刻順、テーマ別（映画、スポーツ等）、あるいはタイトル別（すなわちアルファベット順）に整理されたプログラムリストを見たいかもしれない。ユーザは、所望のプログラムリスト上に強調表示を動かして「ＯＫ」ボタンを押すことにより、プログラムガイドから有料プログラムを購入し得る。
ケーブルシステムオペレータは、有料プログラミングをパッケージで提供する場合がある。様々なタイプのパッケージが利用可能である。例えば「タイムブロック」パッケージは、ユーザが特定のチャネル上の時間ブロックを購入することを可能にする。「ペイ−パー−デイ（ｐａｙ−ｐｅｒ−ｄａｙ）」パッケージは、単一のプログラムの複数回にわたる連続的な放送を含んだものである。「スペシャルイベント」パッケージは、複数の特別なプログラミングイベントを含む。「シーズンチケット」パッケージは、スポーツシーズン全体にわたっての特定のリーグまたはチームの全スポーツプログラムを含む。「プレミアムマルチプレックス」パッケージは、１つ以上のプレミアム加入チャネルについての認可を含み、典型的には月別料金で利用可能である。「アラカルト」パッケージは、複数の加入チャネルのうちの選択的な部分集合についての認可を含んだものである。
ユーザは、カスタマーサービス代表に電話することで、あるいは自動化電話オーダシステムを用いることによって、パッケージをオーダし得る。しかし一般的には、プログラムガイドを用いてパッケージをオーダしたり、パッケージに関する情報を得ることは不可能であった。従って、ユーザはプログラムガイドを用いて個々の有料プログラムを別々に購入し、購入したプログラムが実はもう利用可能なパッケージに含まれていることに気付かないことがしばしばあった。
従って、本発明の目的は、有料プログラムに関する情報を提供し、そのようなパッケージのオーダを容易にする、インタラクティブなテレビジョンプログラムガイドを提供することである。
（発明の要旨）
本発明の上記およびその他の目的は、ユーザが購入するための有料プログラムを、インタラクティブなプログラムガイドから選択することを可能にするシステムを提供することにより、本発明の原理に基づいて達成される。プログラムガイドは、選択されたプログラムが有料プログラムの１つ以上のパッケージの一部であるか否かを決定する。もし選択されたプログラムがプログラムパッケージの一部であれば、ユーザにはそのパッケージに関する情報が提供され、ユーザは所望ならそのパッケージを購入することができる。もし選択されたプログラムが複数のパッケージの一部として含まれていれば、各パッケージに関する情報が提供され得る。
ユーザがパッケージを購入する際、プログラムガイドは、そのパッケージが繰り返しプログラミングを含んでいるか否か（すなわちそのパッケージがある２４時間内において１つの映画の連続的な放送を含んでいるか否か）を決定する。もしパッケージが繰り返しプログラミングを含んでいれば、プログラムガイドは自動的に、パッケージ中の各プログラムに対して（ユーザによって設定された任意のリマインダの後ろに）リマインダを設定する。パッケージ中の各プログラムの予定された放送時刻の直前において、プログラムガイドは適切なリマインダメッセージをユーザのテレビジョン上に表示する。
プログラムガイドは、ユーザの行動を監視することによって、ユーザが繰り返しパッケージ中のうちのいずれかのプログラムを観たか否かを決定する。これは例えば、ユーザがセットトップボックスをオンにして、セットトップボックスをパッケージ中のプログラム用のチャネルに（そのプログラムの予定された放送時刻中に）合わせたか否かを決定することにより行われる。もしユーザがパッケージ中のいずれのプログラムも観ていなければ、プログラムガイドは、各プログラムが放送される直前にリマインダを発し続ける。ユーザがパッケージ中のプログラムのうちの１つを観ると、残りのリマインダはキャンセルされる。
プログラムガイドはまた、ユーザの行動を監視することにより、購入されたパッケージのうちのいずれかのプログラムをユーザが観忘れているか否かを決定する。購入されたパッケージのうちいずれのプログラムもユーザが観ない場合は、プログラムガイドはこの購入をキャンセルする。ユーザに、（そのパッケージがまだ購入可能であれば）キャンセルされたパッケージを再度スケジュールする機会が与えられてもよい。

セットトップボックス３４は、マイクロプロセッサ、および命令を実行し、ペイ−パー−ビューサービスでインタラクティブテレビジョンプログラムガイドをサポートする他の回路を含む。プログラムガイドは、セットトップボックス３４で実施され得るか、または所望によりセットトップボックス以外の他のユーザテレビジョン機器で実施され得る。明瞭化のため、本発明はセットトップボックス実施との関連において説明される。
通信通路３０は、好適には、プログラムデータに加えてスケジュールされたテレビジョンプログラミング、有料プログラミング、および他のビデオ情報を、テレビジョン配信設備２６がユーザ機器３２に配信できるのに十分な帯域幅を有する。所望により、プログラムデータは、テレビジョン配信設備２６と同様であるが別個の１つ以上の配信設備により、通信通路３０とは別個の通信通路を使用して配信してもよい。

図２のグリッド４８のようなプログラムリスティンググリッドおよび他のプログラムガイド表示スクリーンにおいては、ハイライト領域５０のようなハイライト領域が、ユーザの現在の位置を規定するために使用される。ユーザは、リモート制御４０（図１）のカーソルを用いてハイライト領域５０を指示する。ユーザが購入を欲する有料プログラム上にハイライト領域５０が位置する場合、ユーザは、「ＯＫ」、「エンター」または「選択」ボタンを押すことによりそのプログラムをオーダーできる。これにより、プログラムガイドは、様々な有料プログラムオーダーメニューをテレビジョン３８上に表示する。
「ＯＫ」ボタンは、カーソルキーと組み合わせて、プログラムガイドメニューをナビゲートしたり、プログラムガイドからの様々な質問に応答するために使用され得る。所望により、カーソルキーおよび「ＯＫ」ボタンのようなボタンを用いてユーザが選択し得る適切なメニューオプションの形式で、リモート制御４０上に、専用の「ＯＫ」、「ガイド」、「録画」および他の様々な制御ボタンを提供し得る。さらに、所望により、リモート制御４０上に他の専用ボタンを提供し得る。

利用できる様々な有料プログラムパッケージに関する情報は、テレビジョン配信設備２６を介してプログラムガイドデータベース２４からセットトップボックス３４に供給され得る。有料プログラムパッケージを取り扱うために適切なデータ構造を図３〜図５に示す。図３に示すように、各パッケージは、関連パッケージ説明記録５２を有し得る。パッケージ説明記録５２は、パッケージタイトル５４、パッケージテキスト説明５６およびオーダー情報５８を有する。オーダー情報５８は、電話オーダーを行うための電話番号、オファーの有効期限、オーダーのためのタイムウィンドおよびパッケージ種類情報（例えば、パッケージがタイムブロックパッケージ、ペイ−パー−デイパッケージなどであるかどうか）を含み得る。各パッケージ説明記録５２は、パッケージ識別子６０および内容リスト６２も含む。内容リスト６２は、プレミアムチャネルのパッケージを構成するチャネルまたは複数プログラムのパッケージを構成する個々のプログラムなど、パッケージ内容のリストである。
パッケージのプロバイダは、パッケージの内容のすべてをオプションにすることを望まなくてもよい。例えば、プレミアムマルチプレックスパッケージは、様々なオプションチャネルに加えて、１つ以上の必須プレミアムチャネルを含み得る。そのようなパッケージにおいてオプションであるチャネルの数は、パッケージ説明記録５２（即ちオプションアイテム６４の数のカウント）に含まれる。
内容リスト６２の各内容は、好適には、関連パッケージ内容サービス記録６６（図４）（例えば、そのパッケージがプレミアムチャネルのようなサービスのパッケージである場合）、またはパッケージ内容イベント記録６８（図５）（例えば、そのパッケージが個別のプログラムのパッケージである場合）のいずれかを有する。
図４に示すように、各パッケージ内容サービス記録は、好適には、パッケージ識別子７０およびチャネル識別子７２を含む。内容サービス記録６６が関連するパッケージを示すために、パッケージ識別子７０が使用される。チャネル指示子７２は、（例えば、呼び出し文字または他の適切なラベルにより）各内容を識別する。パッケージ内容サービス記録６６に関連する内容がオプションまたは必須内容のいずれであるかを示すために、オプション／必須フラグ７４が使用される。内容が加入パッケージに関連する内容であるか、チャネルのブロック−オブ−タイムに関連する内容であるかを示すために、加入／ブロック−オブ−タイムフラグ７６が使用される。内容がタイムブロックパッケージに関連する場合、タイムブロックの開始および終了時刻は、好適には、加入／タイムブロックフラグ７６により提供される。
図５に示すように、各パッケージ内容イベント記録６８は、好適には、パッケージ識別子７８および個別イベント識別子８０を含む。パッケージ内容イベント記録６８に関連する内容が、オプションまたは必須内容のいずれであるかを示すために、オプション／必須フラグ８２が使用される。
例示的パッケージの１つはプレミアムマルチプレックスパッケージである。そのようなパッケージのパッケージ説明記録５２（図３）は、「映画愛好家スペシャル」のパッケージタイトル５４を有し得る。パッケージテキスト説明５６は、「任意の３プレミアムチャネルに＄５．９９／月で加入しよう」であり得る。
オーダー情報５８は、プレミアムマルチプレックスパッケージとしてパッケージを識別する情報を含み得る。内容リスト６２の内容は、プレミアム映画チャネルであり得る。オプションアイテム６４の数は７であり得る。
内容リスト６２の各プレミアムチャネルは、関連するパッケージ内容サービス記録６６を有する（図４）。そのようなパッケージ内容サービス記録６６のそれぞれのパッケージ識別子７０は、関連プレミアムマルチプレックスパッケージを識別する。各プレミアムチャネルのチャネル識別子７２は、チャネルの呼び出し文字であり得る。オプション／必須フラグ７４は、内容リスト６２のある内容に対しては「必須」に設定され、他の内容に対しては「オプション」に設定され得る。加入／タイムブロックフラグ７６は、「加入」に設定され得る。
別の例示的パッケージは、オリンピック水泳イベントのパッケージである。そのようなパッケージのパッケージ説明記録５２（図３）は、「オリンピック水泳」のパッケージタイトル５４を有し得る。パッケージテキスト説明５６は、「３日間の水泳イベントを楽しもう」であり得る。オーダー情報５８は、パッケージを特別パッケージイベントとして識別する情報を含み得る。内容リスト６２は、男子１００ｍフリースタイル、女子１００ｍ背泳、男子４００ｍリレーなどの水泳イベントを含み得る。オプションアイテム６４の数のカウントは「なし」であり得る。
内容リスト６２の各水泳イベントは、関連するパッケージ内容イベント記録６８を有し得る（図５）。そのようなパッケージ内容イベント記録６８のそれぞれにおけるパッケージ識別子７８は、関連するオリンピック水泳パッケージを識別する。個別イベント識別子８０は、独自に各イベントを識別する。オプション／必須フラグ８２は、リスト６２内の各水泳イベント内容に対して「必須」に設定され得る。
これらの実施例は、例示のみである。有料プログラムは、任意の適切な種類の有料プログラムパッケージにおいて提供され得る。使用されるパッケージの種類は、ユーザが特定チャネルの時間のブロックを購入できる「タイムブロック」パッケージ、単一番組の複数の連続放送（airing）を含む「ペイ−パー−デイ」パッケージ、特別プログラミングイベントの複数の内容を含む「特別イベント」パッケージ、スポーツシーズンの期間にわたる特定のリーグまたはチームのすべてのスポーツプログラムを含む「シーズンチケット」パッケージ、１つ以上のプレミアム加入チャネルに対する認可を含む「プレミアムマルチプレックス」パッケージ、多数の加入チャネルの選択可能サブセットに対する認可を含み得る「アラカルト」パッケージなどを含む。
ユーザが購入のためのプログラムを選択するとき、セットトップボックス３４において実施されるインタラクティブ電子プログラムガイドは、選択されたプログラムがパッケージの一部であるかどうかを決定する。選択されたプログラムがパッケージの一部である場合、プログラムガイドは、ユーザにパッケージの情報を提供する。このプロセスに関わるステップを図６に示す。
ステップ８４では、プログラムガイドにより、（例えば、図２のグリッド４８のようなグリッドにおいて所望のプログラムリスティングをハイライトすることにより）ユーザは購入のためのプログラムを選択できる。ステップ８６では、プログラムガイドは（セットトップボックス３４におけるメモリに格納されている）データベースを確認し、選択されたプログラムが購入可能な有料プログラムであるかどうかを判別する。選択されたイベントが有料プログラムでない場合、ステップ８８において、システムは、（そのイベントが現在放送されている場合）選択されたイベントのためのチャネルにチューニングするか、または（そのイベントが将来放送を予定されている場合）ユーザがリマインダを設定することを可能にする。
選択されたイベントが選択可能な場合、ステップ９０において、システムは、選択されたプログラムが単一のパッケージまたは複数のパッケージの一部であるかどうかと、個別に購入可能かどうかとを判別する。プログラムがパッケージの一部でない場合、選択されたプログラムの価格、開始時刻、チャネルなどがステップ９２において表示され得る。
選択されたプログラムに関する価格および他の情報をステップ９２において表示した後のユーザのオプションは、プログラムガイドからの衝動購入に対するプログラムの利用可能性に依存する。テレビジョン配信設備３２のオペレータが、選択されたプログラムをユーザに対して衝動購入可能にしていない場合、典型的に、ユーザはそのプログラムを電話によりオーダーしなければならない。そのような電話オーダーを容易にする情報（例えば、オーダー、オーダータイムウィンドウなどに対して電話する電話番号）は、ステップ９４においてテレビジョン３８に表示される。プログラムガイドから選択されたプログラムが衝動購入に対して利用可能である場合、ステップ９６においてユーザは、選択されたプログラムの購入を確認できる。ステップ９４および９６はもステップ９２を実行するのに用いられたのと同じ表示スクリーンを用いて実行され得る。
ステップ９０において、選択されたプログラムは単一パッケージの一部であり個別に購入できない、とプログラムガイドが判別した場合、そのプログラムが一部であるパッケージがステップ９８において表示される。例えば、選択されたプログラムが女子４００ｍバタフライ水泳イベントであり、そのプログラムがオリンピック水泳パッケージの一部である場合、図７のメッセージ１００のような情報を与えるメッセージがテレビジョン３８に表示され得る。メッセージ１００は、パッケージタイトル１０２、パッケージ価格１０４、パッケージ説明１０６を含み、パッケージを構成するイベントのリスト１０８を含み得る。ユーザは、（例えば、パッケージタイトル１０２上または「オーダー」ボタン上に、カーソルによりハイライトを配置して、「ＯＫ」ボタンを押すか、または他の任意の適切な技術により）購入のためのパッケージを選択し得る。
ステップ９８において、ユーザが購入のためのパッケージを選択した場合、ステップ１１０または１１２において、ユーザはパッケージの購入を完了するための機会を提供される。例えば、プログラムがプログラムガイドからの衝動購入に対して利用可能でない場合、プログラムをオーダーするための電話番号およびタイムウィンドウがステップ１１０において表示され得る。プログラムが衝動購入に対して利用可能な場合、プログラムは、選択されたプログラムの購入をユーザが確認することをステップ１１２において可能にする。ステップ１１０および１１２を実行するのに使用される表示スクリーンは、実行ステップ９８に使用される表示スクリーンと同一であり得る。
ステップ９０において、選択されたプログラムが複数パッケージの一部であると、即ちパッケージの一部であると同時に個別に購入可能であると、プログラムガイドが判別した場合、プログラムはすべての利用できるプログラム購入オプションと価格とをステップ１１４においてリストする。例えば、選択されたプログラムが男子１００ｍフリースタイルであり、そのイベントが、オリンピック水泳パッケージ、オリンピック水泳ハイライトパッケージ、または個別イベントとしての購入のいずれかとして利用可能である場合、図８のメッセージ１１６のようなメッセージが表示され得る。ユーザは、ステップ１１４において、購入のためにパッケージの１つまたは個別のイベントを、（例えば、ハイライトおよび「ＯＫ」ボタンを使用して）選択し得る。ユーザが購入のために個別のプログラムを選択した場合、そのプログラムに対する購入情報（価格、開始時刻、チャネルなど）がステップ９２において表示され得、ステップ９４または９６においてプログラムが購入される。ユーザが購入のためにパッケージの１つを選択した場合、各パッケージの内容がステップ９８において表示され、ユーザはステップ１１０または１１２においてそのパッケージを購入する。
所望であれば、購入のために個別のチャネルを選択したユーザは、選択されたチャネルを含むパッケージに関する情報を提示され得る。例えば、購入のために特定のプレミアム映画チャネルを選択したユーザは、図９の表示スクリーン１１８のような表示スクリーンを提供され得る。図９の実施例では、ユーザは購入のためにチャネルＣを選択した。チャネルＣは映画愛好家パッケージの一部としての購入に対し利用可能なので、ユーザはそのパッケージの内容に関する情報を提示される。チャネルＶおよびＳは必須チャネルである。チャネルＨ、Ｃ、Ｄ、ＭおよびＫはオプションチャネルである。
本発明の別の局面は、パッケージの一部であるプログラムのリマインダに関する。リマインダが設定された場合、セットトップボックス３４は、プログラムの予定された放送時刻の直前にテレビジョン３８のディスプレイにリマインダメッセージを生成する。任意の適切な種類のリマインダが生成される。例えば、選択されたプログラムにユーザがチューニングを望むかどうかを尋ねるリマインダを生成し得る。ユーザが肯定の応答をした場合、セットトップボックス３４は、選択されたプログラムのためのチャネルにチューニングする。また、選択されたプログラムが開始しようとしていることを単にユーザに想起させるリマインダも生成され得る。使用され得る別の種類のリマインダは、イベントの予定された開始時刻に、関連イベントにセットトップボックス３４を自動的にチューニングする。
パッケージに対するプログラムリマインダを設定することに関するステップを図１０に示す。ステップ１２０において、ユーザは、プログラムガイドから購入のためにパッケージを選択する機会を提供される。プログラムガイドは、選択されたパッケージがチャネルのパッケージであるかどうかを判別する。選択されたパッケージがチャネルのパッケージである場合、リマインダは設定されない（ステップ１２２）。
パッケージがプログラムのパッケージである場合、プログラムガイドは、そのパッケージが繰り返しプログラミングを含むかどうかをステップ１２４において判別する。繰り返しプログラミングを含む典型的パッケージは、同一の映画が２４時間繰り返し放送されるペイ−パー−デイ映画パッケージである。ユーザは、２４時間の間の放送の任意の間の映画を視聴し得る。
パッケージが繰り返しプログラミングを含んでいないと、ステップ１２４においてプログラムガイドが判別した場合、プログラムガイドは、ステップ１２６において、パッケージ内のすべてのプログラムに対してプログラムリマインダを自動的に設定する。各プログラムが放送される直前に、プログラムガイドは、ステップ１２８において適切なリマインダを表示する。
パッケージが繰り返しプログラミングを含んでいると、ステップ１２４において、プログラムガイドが判別した場合、プログラムガイドは、プログラムリマインダを設定する機会をステップ１２９においてユーザに提供する。プログラムガイドは、ステップ１３０において、パッケージ内のすべての後続するプログラムに対して、プログラムリマインダを自動的に設定する。プログラムガイドは、（例えば、セットトップボックス３４がオンであり、予定された放送時間の間に所与のプログラムに対してチャネルがチューニングされているかを判別することにより）パッケージ内のプログラムの任意のものをユーザが視聴したかどうかをステップ１３２においてモニタする。パッケージ内のプログラムの任意のものをユーザがまだ視聴していない場合、パッケージ内の次の予定されたプログラムに対するリマインダが、ステップ１３４において表示される。しかしながら、繰り返しプログラミングパッケージ内のプログラムの１つをユーザが視聴している場合、プログラムガイドは、ステップ１３２において設定されたプログラムリマインダをステップ１３６においてキャンセルする。この方法は、ユーザが放送の１つを視聴した後で、ペイ−パー−デイパッケージ内の視聴されていない放送に対する多数の不要なリマインダをプログラムガイドが生成することを防ぐ。
時々ユーザは、購入したパッケージ内の任意のプログラムを視聴できない場合があり得る。プログラムガイドは、図１１に示す方法を用いて、この種類の状況に対処し得る。ステップ１３８において、プログラムガイドは、（例えば、所望のパッケージをハイライトし、「ＯＫ」ボタンを押すことにより）ユーザがプログラムのパッケージを購入することを可能にする。ステップ１４０において、プログラムガイドは、（例えば、パッケージ内のプログラの予定された放送時間の間にユーザがセットトップボックス３４をオンにして、適切なチャネルにチューニングしたかどうかを判別することにより）ユーザのアクティビティをモニタし、パッケージ内の任意のプログラムをユーザが視聴したかどうかを判別する。ユーザがパッケージ内の任意のプログラムを視聴していない場合、プログラムガイドはステップ１４２において購入をキャンセルする。所望により、ステップ１４２でのパッケージの購入のキャンセルは、そのパッケージに対する「購入ウィンドウ」の失効（expiration）を引き起こし得る。これは、典型的には、全体パッケージより長さにおいて幾分短く、パッケージの終了の半時間または１時間前に、典型的に失効する。プログラムガイドは、キャンセルされたパッケージに対してユーザが請求されないことを、ステップ１４４においてユーザに知らせる。
ユーザはそのパッケージに興味を持っているので、プログラムガイドは同様のパッケージがまだ利用可能であるかどうかも判別する（例えば、別の日に利用可能な別のペイ−パー−デイパッケージ）。同様のパッケージが利用可能である場合、プログラムガイドは、パッケージ購入の再スケジュールの機会をステップ１４６においてユーザに提示する。
以上は、単に本発明の原理の例示であり、本発明の範囲から逸脱することなく当業者により様々な変形が為され得る。

Claims (1)

  1. 有料テレビジョン番組をユーザが購入し得るインタラクティブ番組ガイドシステムであって、
    インタラクティブテレビジョン番組ガイドから購入される番組を選択する手段と、
    該選択された番組が有料の番組のパッケージの一部かどうかを決定する手段と、
    該選択された番組が一部である該パッケージに関する情報を表示し、該選択された番組が該パッケージの一部である場合には、該パッケージを購入する機会を該ユーザに提供する手段であって、該パッケージが該ユーザによって購入された際、該インタラクティブテレビジョン番組ガイドは、該購入されたパッケージが繰り返し放送される番組を含むかどうかを決定し、該パッケージが該繰り返し放送される番組を含まないと決定された場合には、該購入されたパッケージ内のすべての番組に対する番組リマインダを自動的に設定する、手段と
    を含む、インタラクティブ番組ガイドシステム。
