Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a press roll apparatus and a press method used in the process of manufacturing an electrode for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery.
In recent years, lithium ion secondary batteries, which are nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries, have been used as batteries for personal computers and mobile phones. Lithium ion secondary batteries have the advantage that they have a higher capacity than conventional rechargeable secondary batteries and do not cause a decrease in capacity even if they are charged frequently.
An electrode to be a positive electrode and a negative electrode accommodated in a lithium ion secondary battery has an active material and a binder capable of inserting and removing lithium on a current collector made of metal foil, and a conductive auxiliary agent as required. In addition, a slurry obtained by adding water or an organic solvent and adding a thickener or the like to a slurry is applied and dried.
For the positive electrode, a lithium-containing transition metal oxide (such as lithium cobaltate or lithium manganate) is mainly used as an active material. To this active material, carbon black such as acetylene black or graphite is added as a conductive additive, and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone is added and mixed as necessary using a binder such as polyvinylidene fluoride. Use to adjust the slurry. This slurry is coated on a web such as an aluminum foil with a die coat or a comma coat in a coating process and dried. In order to increase the capacity of the battery, the web coated with the active material is pressed in the pressing step to increase the density. Then, in a slit process, it cuts along a length direction so that a plurality of tape-like electrode materials may be formed from the web. Finally, a positive electrode is obtained by cutting the tape-shaped electrode material into a predetermined length.
On the other hand, for the negative electrode, graphite or the like that can mainly store and release lithium ions is used as an active material. A slurry is adjusted by mixing a rubber binder such as carboxymethyl cellulose or styrene butadiene rubber with this active material, and adding and dispersing water as necessary. This slurry is applied on a web such as a copper foil by die coating or comma coating in a coating process and dried. In order to increase the capacity of the battery, the density of the battery is increased by pressing the web coated and dried with the active material in the pressing step. Then, in a slit process, it cuts along a length direction so that a plurality of tape-like electrode materials may be formed from the web. Finally, the tape-shaped electrode material is cut into a predetermined length to obtain a negative electrode.
The positive electrode and the negative electrode obtained as described above are wound with a separator made of, for example, polyethylene sandwiched between them, housed in a predetermined can, and injected with an electrolyte solution to be sealed. A secondary battery is obtained.
In the pressing step of the negative electrode manufacturing process described above, pressing is performed in order to increase the density of the electrode. However, if the pressing is performed too much, a coating film made of an active material or the like may be taken on the press roll (hereinafter, this phenomenon). Say "taken"). When the coating film is peeled off, there is a high possibility that metallic lithium will be deposited at the part where the coating film is peeled off during charging and discharging, and in the worst case, there is a possibility of causing a short circuit in the battery. Therefore, in the pressing process, it is necessary to press within a pressing pressure range in which no take-off to the press roll occurs. Actually, pressing is performed at a linear pressure of about 0.01 to 0.3 ton / cm.
However, because the pressure is weak, there is a subtle change in the press roll as the press actually progresses, which affects the press pressure on the electrode material web, resulting in the density and coating of the electrode material web. A change occurs in the film thickness. Specifically, heat is generated in the bearing portion that rotatably supports the press roll shaft in a state where the press pressure is applied during the progress of the press, and the heat is transmitted to the press roll. The vicinity region is thermally expanded and deformed. Exaggeratingly speaking, a cylindrical press roll is deformed into a substantially continuous shape. Due to this thermal expansion deformation, the press pressure is increased at the both ends of the press roll, the thickness of the coating film is reduced, the film is taken off, and the thickness variation in the width direction of the electrode material web occurs.
If the thickness of the electrode material web is not uniform in the width direction, negative electrode electrodes having different thicknesses are obtained depending on the cutting position, which may hinder the design of the battery.
Therefore, the present invention continuously passes between two press rolls arranged in parallel with each other after applying an active material on a metal web and drying it in the process of manufacturing a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery electrode. It is an object of the present invention to provide a press roll apparatus and a pressing method that can correct thickness variation in the web width direction when pressing.
In order to solve the above-mentioned problems, the press roll apparatus of the present invention is arranged in parallel to each other by applying and drying an active material on a metal web in the process of manufacturing a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery electrode. In a press roll device that presses continuously by passing between two press rolls,
Correction means for correcting local thermal expansion deformation of the press roll that occurs during the pressing process is provided.
In the press roll apparatus of the present invention, the correction means may be a preheating roll that heats by contacting the web on the upstream side of the press roll with respect to the advancing direction of the web, or in the press roll. It may be a built-in heater.
Moreover, in the press roll apparatus of this invention, you may adjust the bend pressure of the said press roll according to the thickness of the said web which passed between the said press rolls.
In the pressing method of the present invention, an active material is applied on a metal web and dried in the process of manufacturing an electrode for a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery, and continuously between two press rolls arranged in parallel to each other. In the pressing method of passing and pressing,
A local thermal expansion deformation of the press roll that occurs during the pressing process is corrected.
In the pressing method of the present invention, the correction may be performed by a preheating roll that heats by contacting the web on the upstream side of the press roll with respect to the traveling direction of the web, or is incorporated in the press roll. You may do with a heater.
Moreover, the press method of this invention may adjust the bend pressure of the said press roll according to the thickness of the said web which passed between the said press rolls.
According to the press roll apparatus and the press method of the present invention, for example, the web is heated by a preheating roll, or the press roll is heated from the inside by a heater, so that the entire press roll is in a soaking state. By correcting the local thermal expansion deformation, the gap between the two press rolls and the press pressure can be made substantially uniform in the web width direction, and as a result, the thickness variation in the width direction of the web passed between the press rolls. Can be eliminated.
Further, in the press roll device and the press method of the present invention, if the press roll bend pressure is adjusted according to the thickness of the web that has passed between the press rolls during the press process, the bend pressure can be increased. By slightly deflecting the press roll in the axial direction, the above-mentioned effects can be made more effective, and the gap between the press rolls and the press pressure can be kept almost uniform from the start of the press to the end of the press. As a result, the thickness change in the flow direction of the pressed web can be prevented.

Here, the bend pressure is the pressure applied by the
As shown in FIG. 2, the copper foil web W that has been negatively coated with the negative electrode active material and dried is continuously passed between the upper and lower press rolls 12 and 14 in the traveling direction indicated by the arrows. . On the upstream side of the upper and lower press rolls 12 and 14 with respect to the traveling direction of the web W, two preheating rolls (correcting means) 50 and 52 each incorporating a heater are disposed. The web W is guided between the outer peripheral portions of the two preheating rolls 50 and 52 and then introduced between the upper and lower press rolls 12 and 14. Each of the preheating rolls 50 and 52 can be heated to, for example, room temperature to 150 ° C. by a built-in heater, and can heat the web W conveyed while being in contact therewith to a predetermined temperature.
In the present embodiment, a plurality of preheating rolls 50 and 52 are provided. However, if the web W can be sufficiently heated, the number of preheating rolls may be one.
On the downstream side of the upper and lower press rolls 12 and 14 with respect to the traveling direction of the web W, four guide rolls 54, 56, 58 and 60 are arranged at alternate heights. The web W that has passed through the upper and lower press rolls 12, 14 is conveyed so as to form a substantially W shape while being guided by the outer peripheral portions of the four guide rolls 54, 56, 58, 60.
Among the four guide rolls 54, 56, 58, 60, an in-line film thickness meter (for example, TM-102 manufactured by Meisho Co., Ltd.) 62 is disposed so as to face the
In the in-line
Next, the operation of the
In a state where the preheating rolls 50 and 52 are heated to a predetermined temperature (for example, 35 ° C.), the web W coated with the negative electrode active material is continuously passed between the upper and lower press rolls 12 and 14 for pressing. While the press is in progress, the thickness of the web W is continuously measured by the in-line
As the press progresses, heat is generated in the bearing
As the press further proceeds, the upper and lower press rolls 12 and 14 are thermally expanded and deformed as a whole, and the gap between the upper and lower press rolls 12 and 14 gradually narrows. The web thickness gradually becomes thinner.
Therefore, in the

<Web thickness measurement method>
For the measurement, a contact-type film thickness meter (named “Microfine S-2”) was used. For each of the start and end of press working, 20 points in the web width direction were measured at 20 points in the flow direction, and the average value was calculated. It was confirmed whether the average value was within a target thickness of ± 2.6 μm.

<Experimental result>
FIG. 3 shows the behavior of the web thickness after pressing in the flow direction. In Comparative Example 1, only 420 m could be processed under the above-described press progress conditions, but in Example 2 where the bend pressure was adjusted during the progress, processing of 1200 m became possible. Furthermore, in Example 1 in which the bend pressure was adjusted and the preheating rolls 50 and 52 were heated, it became clear that processing of 3000 m or more was possible under the above-described press progress conditions. Further, it was confirmed that the target web thickness could be sufficiently satisfied even in the measurement at the end of processing of 3000 m or more.
From these experiments, the bend pressure contributes not only to the function of balancing the thickness of the web W in the width direction by bending the upper and lower press rolls 12 and 14 but also to increasing the roll gap by minute pressure adjustment. it is conceivable that. A much more stable operation can be obtained by increasing the gap by adjusting the bend pressure than by increasing the gap by the
However, the root cause of the change in web thickness is the temperature rise of the machines (upper and lower press rolls 12, 14,
FIG. 4 shows the average web thickness in the width direction at the start of pressing and at the end of pressing for 8 lots each processed under the same conditions as in Examples 1 and 2. In Example 2, the thickness difference between the central portion and the end portion increased at the time of the press end by 2.3 μm or more, whereas in Example 1, the difference was suppressed within 1.0 μm. Based on this result, it is proved that the web W can be heated to the press roll temperature by the preheating rolls 50 and 52 and the temperature difference between the web W and the roll surface can be reduced to suppress the thickness change in the web width direction. It was.
Further, in Comparative Example 2 in which the temperature of the preheating rolls 50 and 52 was set to 90 ° C., the appearance abnormality such as cracking and peeling of the coating film occurred and it was not possible to proceed. It was proved to be a more effective method in that good results were obtained without appearance abnormality.
<Yield comparison>
As a definition of the yield, it was defined as the ratio of the output quantity to the press input amount when 50 lots were pressed. As shown in Table 1 below, the yield was improved by 10.7% in Comparative Example 1 compared to Comparative Example 1 by adjusting the bend pressure and heating with the preheating rolls 50 and 52. This result also revealed that this is a useful method that can greatly reduce manufacturing loss.
In addition, this invention is not limited to embodiment mentioned above, A various change is possible.
For example, in the
The present invention can also be applied to a pressing step in the manufacturing process of an electrode for a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery other than a lithium ion secondary battery.
