遊泳馴化最終日の3日後から群分け試験を開始した。マウスの尾に体重の3%の重さに相当するワッシャーを通して抜けないようにビニルテープで止め、50%エタノールを浸漬させた脱脂綿で頭部以外の体表を清拭し、脱気処理を施した水温30℃の水を高さ360mmになるまで注入した2Lメスシリンダー(胴径φ84×高さ517mm)に入れ、1日おきに計3回、マウスが水中に沈み、鼻先が7秒間以上上がってこなくなるまでの時間を測定した。測定した3回の遊泳時間を用いて、個体内平均遊泳時間及び標準偏差を算出し、標準偏差の小さいマウスを選抜し、群内平均時間がほぼ同じになるように対照群と5%ヨモギエタノールエキス含有食群とに分けた。
