The present invention relates to smokable filler materials, and more particularly to agglomerated tobacco filler materials and smoking articles comprising the materials.
The primary and secondary processing of tobacco produces dust and fine tobacco materials that are not commercially available. The fine tobacco material is rich in silica and its rough surface is undesirable for subsequent processing utilizing a cutting or grinding device. At present, such fine tobacco materials that cannot be treated are discarded. In current economic trends, reducing waste is desired for financial and environmental reasons. Also, how to make the best use of tobacco waste can be very beneficial.
The papermaking process used to produce recycled tobacco products requires high throughput to be efficient and cost effective. The papermaking process may not be suitable for certain factories, specifically factories that lack expensive equipment or have few materials. There is a tremendous benefit if there is a way to use waste material without the need for expensive equipment.
Agglomeration of tobacco dust and fine tobacco material has been proposed as a means of producing recycled tobacco products.
In any of these methods, a high density recycled tobacco product that is compacted by adding a binder.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an agglomerated tobacco product that utilizes tobacco waste material that is currently not commercially valuable, particularly tobacco dust, to obtain a product having a filling value substantially similar to minced tobacco.
The present invention further utilizes a waste material that is rich in silica in conventional regenerated tobacco products and methods of regenerating tobacco, with silica having no commercial value to significantly wear the grinders and cutters used in subsequent processing. It is also an object to provide an agglomerated tobacco product that can be produced.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide an agglomerated tobacco product that can be used in a smoking article in place of or in combination with other recycled tobacco materials, where the agglomerated tobacco filler fill value is determined by the filling of chopped tobacco. It is a further object of the present invention to provide an agglomerated tobacco filling material that has acceptable handling and low brittleness so that it can be incorporated directly into a smoking article without the need for further processing.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide an agglomerated tobacco filling material that uses fluidized bed technology in one step and is made by low temperature processing.
The “filling value” here refers to the capacity measured in cubic centimeters per gram of product. The filling value is determined using a Borgwaldt densitometer (DD60A), taking a sample of a defined size, eg, a defined weight in a stainless steel cylinder with a radius of 3 cm, and adding a weight (eg, an extra weight of about 1 kg) to the sample. Is measured by applying pressure for 30 seconds with a piston attached. Measure the height of the compressed sample and convert it to volume. Results are recorded in cm 3 / g. The filling value was measured with the above-described apparatus.
Bulk density is obtained by measuring the weight (grams) of product per unit volume (cm 3 ). Results are recorded in g / cm 3 .

Such a hard filling material is advantageous because tobacco is prone to disintegration during the primary and secondary processing stages. The agglomerated tobacco filler material of the present invention is measured according to the method described in Example 3 below. Strength is expressed as the loss of agglomerated tobacco filler material during the milling process, i.e. it is a measure of the reduction in particle size resulting from disintegration. Agglomerate loss is expressed as the difference between the percentage of aggregated tobacco filler material remaining on the 710 μm sieve prior to grinding and the percentage of aggregated tobacco filler material remaining after grinding.

Tobacco dust is pulverized so that its particle size is less than 500 μm in diameter and the bulk density is from 0.3 g / cm 3 to 0.38 g / cm 3 . Charge 300 to 350 g of tobacco dust into the product container of Aeromatic-Fielder STREA-1. This device uses a top spray nozzle and operates at an air inlet temperature of 60 ° C. The discharge temperature is in the range of 27 ° C to 39 ° C. The dust is then fluidized in a warm air stream. The agglomerated fluid containing the binder is sprayed onto the fluidized tobacco dust at a spray rate of about 10 ml / min for 20 to 60 minutes. Thus, the resulting agglomerated tobacco product is agglomerated and dried in one step. The moisture content of the agglomerated tobacco filler at the end of the agglomeration process is between 12% and 16%, ideally about 14%. The agglomerated tobacco filling material is adjusted so that its moisture content is between 11% and 16% before incorporation into the smoking article.
Table 1 shows the filling values of the three different tobacco blends and the agglomerated tobacco filling material produced by the method described in Example 1, respectively. Note that apple pectin (5% by weight of the aggregate) was used as a binder.
An agglomerated tobacco filler containing 92% by weight tobacco dust, 3% by weight wetting material, and 5% by weight binder was made by the general method described in Example 1.
The strength of the agglomerated tobacco product was measured on agglomerates formed using several different binders.
A Pascal Ball-Mill with 6 balls each weighing 22.5 g was operated at “Speed 9” and 10 grams of agglomerated tobacco product was ground for 30 seconds. The weight percent of the aggregated tobacco filling material remaining before and after grinding was recorded on a sieve of a specific size, and the brittleness of different samples was calculated.
The brittleness was calculated as follows using several types of knitted mesh sieves: Brittleness (%) = Aggregate after grinding (%)-Aggregate before grinding (%)
Table 2 shows the results of the brittleness test.
Using the fluidized bed obtained by STREA-1 and 350 g of tobacco dust, the particle size distribution when the final binder concentration of the aggregate was 5% by weight was examined by six aggregation tests. The aggregate particle size distribution is shown in Table 3.
A tobacco blend consisting of 6.3 kg of blended tobacco with 10% of the standard recycled tobacco sheet (Reconstituted Tobacco Sheet, (RTS)) and 0.7 kg (10% by weight) of aggregated tobacco filling material of 800 μm to 1,400 μm made. . That is, an agglomerated tobacco filling material was used in place of the regenerated tobacco.
A tobacco blend consisting of 6.3 kg of blended tobacco with 10% standard RTS removed and 0.7 kg (10 wt%) of 1400 μm to 2000 μm agglomerated tobacco filler was made. That is, an agglomerated tobacco filling material was used in place of the regenerated tobacco.
A tobacco blend was made consisting of 6.65 kg of tobacco blend containing 10% standard RTS and 0.35 kg (5 wt%) of agglomerated tobacco filler from 800 μm to 1400 μm. That is, a combination of recycled tobacco and agglomerated tobacco filler was used.
Further, an aggregated tobacco filling material containing an inert material was prepared by the method of Example 1. This filler material comprises 76% by weight tobacco dust, 19% by weight inert filler material and 5% by weight binder.
Table 4 shows the static burning rate, hardness and tobacco end stability of smoking articles containing the aggregated tobacco filler material of the present invention.
Table 5 shows the physical measurement results of the smoking article containing the aggregated tobacco filling material of the present invention.
Since the agglomerate filling value is less than the tobacco blend filling value, the density of the agglomerated tobacco filling material is expected to be higher than the density of the smoking article without agglomerated material. However, physical measurements show that the density of smoking articles with aggregates is lower than that without smoking articles.
