Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a carbon material in which carbon fibers are grown on a part of a carbon core, a method for producing the carbon material, a gas adsorption device, and a composite material.
Thanks to the accelerating development of science and technology, mankind has produced and used various devices that make everyday activities easier and various devices that provide a better life. And has come to consume enormous energy. This trend will intensify in the future and will inevitably spread around the world, so a serious energy shortage is expected in the near future.
The energy necessary for operating various electronic / electrical devices is electric power, and hydropower, thermal power, and nuclear power generation have been conventionally used as power generation methods for obtaining electric power. In addition to this, recently, clean and inexhaustible power generation using sunlight, wind power, and geothermal heat has been carried out, but it is insufficient to cover the future power shortage situation.
In addition, the conventional power generation method has a serious problem in consideration of the global environment. In other words, thermal power generation, in which fossil fuels are burned and a turbine is rotated to generate electricity, discharges a huge amount of carbon dioxide gas and spurs global warming. In nuclear power generation, unlike the thermal power generation, the power generation method itself is clean and highly efficient, but has a difficult problem of processing radioactive waste.
On the other hand, in automobiles, ships and aircraft, an internal combustion engine called an engine is mounted as a power source. The energy required to operate the internal combustion engine is fossil fuel such as gasoline, light oil, heavy oil, kerosene and natural gas. Therefore, operating the internal combustion engine means that, like thermal power generation, it emits carbon dioxide and accelerates global warming. Furthermore, internal combustion engines sprinkle particulate carbonaceous materials and emit sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides to cause air pollution, which has a great adverse effect on the health of human beings and other living organisms on the planet.
As a means for simultaneously solving the above power shortage situation and air pollution situation, attempts to put the fuel cell to practical use and widespread have recently become active. A fuel cell is an excellent power generation method in which hydrogen gas and oxygen gas are used as fuel to extract electric power through an electrochemical reaction, and exhaust gas is only steam.
A fuel cell uses hydrogen gas as a fuel, but hydrogen hardly exists in the atmosphere, and since it is a gas, it is dilute and low-density, and further, since it has a small molecular size, it easily leaks and involves an explosion risk. Therefore, whether or not a fuel cell can be installed in various devices, on-site power generation devices and automobiles depends on how hydrogen fuel as a fuel can be supplied with high density and safety.
Hydrogen gas cylinders and liquefied hydrogen cylinders have been put to practical use as methods for storing and transporting hydrogen gas, and hydrogen storage alloys have been studied for many years.
The volumetric hydrogen density when the cylinder is filled with hydrogen as a gas is as low as 6.75 mol H 2 / dm 3 (273 K) at a filling pressure of 15 MPa, and it needs to be filled at a considerably high pressure for use as a fuel cell. There is a problem that the risk of explosion and leakage increases with the development. On the other hand, if hydrogen is liquefied and filled in a cylinder in a liquid state, the volumetric hydrogen density can be increased to 35 mol H 2 / dm 3 (20K) (see Non-Patent Document 1), but it is 20K for the liquefaction. Must be cooled down, which requires complex systems and enormous energy.
Hydrogen storage alloys have been studied for a long time about various alloy systems such as lanthanum (La) -nickel (Ni) system, vanadium (V) system, magnesium (Mg) system, and 50 mol H 2 / dm 3 (273 K). A high volumetric hydrogen density can be obtained. However, since the hydrogen storage alloy is a metal, it has a high specific gravity, and the density of heavy hydrogen, which is the amount of hydrogen stored per unit weight, is 3 to 5% by weight (0 to 100 ° C.) at a pressure of 12 MPa. Portable fuel cell systems are required to be compact and lightweight, but the hydrogen storage alloys that have been developed so far have low hydrogen density and require heating up to 500K when releasing hydrogen. As a result, it is difficult to mount the personal computer on a personal computer or a mobile phone.
The above hydrogen storage technology is described in detail in Non-Patent Document 1.
As the hydrogen storage material, in addition to the above-described hydrogen storage alloy, the existence of a carbon-based material is also known. Activated carbon that has been conventionally used as a gas adsorbent for malodors has many structural defects and a high density of adsorption sites, and can therefore adsorb a large amount of gas molecules. However, with respect to hydrogen adsorption, the weight hydrogen density is known to be as low as 1% by weight or less.
There is an amorphous carbon material as a carbon-based hydrogen storage material other than activated carbon. An amorphous carbon material is a dense macroscopic structure composed entirely of amorphous carbon, and is used in various forms such as granular, plate-like, and fibrous. Amorphous carbon material is composed entirely of amorphous carbon and contains a number of structural defects that can be adsorption sites. However, since the particle diameter and fiber diameter are at least about 1 μm, gas diffusion into the interior is slow, Substantially only some adsorption sites near the surface can contribute to adsorption. Therefore, the apparent hydrogen storage amount is smaller than that of the activated carbon, although the amorphous state is more advanced than that of the activated carbon. If the amorphous carbon material is miniaturized, the hydrogen absorption amount should be improved because it can be effectively used up to the internal adsorption site. However, in reality, the fine amorphous carbon material quickly re-aggregates to form dense macroscopic particles. Therefore, it is difficult to effectively use the internal adsorption site.
On the other hand, recently, it has been reported that carbon nanotubes, which are a kind of nanocarbon fiber, store 5 to 10% by weight of hydrogen far exceeding hydrogen storage alloys (see Non-Patent Document 2).
A carbon nanotube has a structure in which a graphite sheet (also referred to as a graphene sheet) is rounded into a cylindrical shape, and a single carbon layer (single wall carbon nanotube (SWNT)) is a carbon layer constituting a cylinder. And those having two or more layers are called multi-walled carbon nanotubes (also referred to as multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs)). Of the multi-walled carbon nanotubes, those having two carbon layers are sometimes referred to as double-walled carbon nanotubes (also referred to as double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNT)). It is known that various physical properties vary depending on how the graphite sheet is wound, the arrangement of six-membered ring carbon as a structural unit, the diameter of the tube, and the like. Any of the carbon nanotubes described above is completely crystalline carbon composed of a network of carbon atoms with sp 2 hybrid orbitals, like graphite.
Single-walled carbon nanotubes and double-walled carbon nanotubes have diameters of less than about 2 nm and less than 3 nm, respectively, and nothing is usually contained inside the tube. Attempts to change are being made. On the other hand, multi-walled carbon nanotubes include those having a hollow portion at the center and those having a hollow portion at the center and no hollow portion.
Carbon nanotubes are produced by an arc discharge method using a graphite electrode, a CVD (chemical vapor deposition method) method using a catalytic metal, a laser ablation method, or the like. In the arc discharge method and laser ablation method, a large amount of various graphite particles and amorphous carbon particles are present in the product, and in the CVD method, it is inevitable that catalyst metal is mixed. Therefore, a process of separating and purifying these impurities and taking out only carbon nanotubes is required. For separation and purification of carbon nanotubes, a method of dispersing in a solvent and filtering and centrifuging (see Patent Document 1) or heating to 600 ° C. or more together with an oxidizing agent (see Patent Document 2) is known.
As for the hydrogen storage capacity of carbon nanotubes, there are reports of extremely large values as in Non-Patent Document 2, but there are also negative reports as in Non-Patent
However, since the above-mentioned carbon particles and carbon fibers have small particle diameters and fiber diameters of nanometer to micrometer scale, they have the property of agglomerating into coarse particles or very thick fibers. When carbon particles or carbon fibers are used as a gas adsorbent, there is a possibility that the adsorption performance is enhanced when the particles are not aggregated.
Even when carbon particles and carbon fibers are dispersed in a polymer material, ceramic material or metal material to increase the mechanical strength of the base material, or dispersed in a polymer to have conductivity, it is homogeneous. To avoid agglomeration as much as possible in order to obtain good performance. For these reasons, the emergence of an innovative technology that avoids aggregation and disperses uniformly is eagerly desired.
Therefore, the present invention provides a carbon material in which a plurality of carbon fibers are formed on the surface of a carbon core made of carbon particles or carbon fibers, so that the carbon material itself does not aggregate and has high gas adsorption performance. It is an object to provide a material and a method for producing the carbon material.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a gas adsorption device with high adsorption performance by using the carbon material as a gas adsorbent.
Furthermore, it is an object to disperse the carbon material and use it for a composite material such as a polymer material, a ceramic material, or a metal material.

First, the configuration will be described. The

Further, when it is desired to make the
Hereinafter, the first step of depositing the
A
The deposition method may be any method of dip coating in an organic metal solution and organic substance evaporation by heating, vapor deposition, sputtering, and plating. The most suitable method is to immerse the
Thus, the

While introducing argon (Ar) gas whose flow rate is controlled as an inert gas into the
In addition, what is necessary is just to continue the 3rd and 4th process demonstrated below, when making the
Hereinafter, a third step of activating the
The
Here, an example of O 2 gas will be described. While introducing the flow-controlled O 2 gas into the

Conceivable. When used in the activation process, the oxidizing gas according to the present invention may be chemically bonded to the surfaces of the
