Description
【0001】

(Technical field)
The present invention relates to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical networks, and more particularly, but not exclusively, to WDM networks in a passive ring configuration, and to add and remove elements for use in such networks. Related to drop light filters.
[0002]
(Background technology)
As is known, WDM optical networks include a plurality of connection points interconnected by optical waveguide means, typically optical fibers. At each node, one or more selected wavelength channels are added or deleted, and WDM optical signals can be routed between the nodes based on the wavelength channel. Generally, a single unique wavelength channel is assigned for a given connection between two connection points, but using more than one wavelength channel for the same connection to increase transmission capacity It has been known.
[0003]
One network topography, often referred to as a ring configuration, is one of which is where the connection points are connected in a point-to-point series by optical fibers in a continuous loop or ring configuration. At each connection point, one or more add or drop optical fibers are connected in series within the ring, each adding or removing a single selected wavelength channel of the WDM signal. Add filters allow certain wavelength channels to be introduced (added) to the ring at the point of attachment, while allowing the remaining wavelength channels to pass without substantial attenuation, while drop filters It allows certain wavelength channels to be removed (removed) from the ring at the point of connection, while allowing the remaining wavelength channels to pass without substantial attenuation.
[0004]
For each duplex connection to the ring, the connection point is provided with an add-drop filter module including an add optical filter and a drop optical filter, respectively.
[0005]
A WDM network configuration is either a complete mesh network where every connection point is connectable to every other connection point for wavelength connections, or where one connection point, called a hub, is connected to every other connection point. , I.e., hub networks connected to one or more other nodes, i.e., no single wavelength channel is shared with one or more other nodes.
[0006]
Ring optical networks are either passive in the ring or at the point of connection without optical amplification, and optical amplification means (typically erbium-doped) that amplify optical signals to compensate for losses in the network. Fiber amplifier EDFA or Raman optical amplifier). Generally, the former, which is dozens of kilometers around the ring, is often used as part of a local area network and is called a metro (metropolitan) network.
[0007]
To the inventors, the limitation inherent in passive metropolitan ring optical networks is that the transmission loss (sometimes also referred to as insertion or pass loss) of each add-drop filter module is the number of connection points in the network. It was found that this was due to a great restriction on The transmission loss of a filter module is the loss experienced by a wavelength channel passing through and around the ring. In particular, a single duplex connection between two points requires two add-drop filter modules, ie a total of four filters, since all of the add-drop filter modules are connected in series in the ring And the pass loss can quickly consume the link loss setting of the network. For example, this link loss setting for a receiver having a sensitivity of -28 dBm and a transmitter operating at +5 dBm is 33 dBm. In a fully meshed network of six nodes, the network requires 15 wavelength connections (ie, 15 WDM channels), each of which has two addendums for a duplex connection. -Requires a drop filter module, i.e. 30 filter modules. More generally, even with a transmission loss of 1 dBm per filter module (i.e., transmission loss of 0.5 dBm per add or drop filter), the best of the known filter modules is currently 1.5 dBm It has a close loss and the loss to the entire circuit around the ring is 30 dBm, leaving little link loss setting for optical fiber loss, resulting in a ring with a very limited circumference.
[0008]
(Disclosure of the Invention)
The present invention seeks to provide a WDM ring configuration that at least partially alleviates the limitations of known networks.
[0009]
According to the present invention, there is provided a WDM optical network including a plurality of connection points connected in series to each other in a ring configuration by optical waveguide means, and an add and drop optical filter at each connection point connected in series in the ring. Provided, wherein the WDM optical network comprises: one or more of the filters adding or removing at least two selected adjacent wavelength channels of the WDM optical signal to the ring while the remaining channels of the WDM signal Are configured to pass without substantial attenuation, and the respective wavelength channels for each connection point are selected to maximize the number of adjacent wavelength channels at each connection point. .
[0010]
This choice of wavelength channel connection minimizes the number of add and drop optical filters required, thereby minimizing the transmission losses associated with the filters and providing more for a given link loss setting. Number of connection points can be connected.
[0011]
The passband of the filter (or the stopband, depending on whether the filter is operating as a transmitting or reflecting device) is sufficiently large so that at least two selected adjacent wavelength channels can be added or deleted. Preferably, it is selected widely. By carefully designing such a filter, the transmission loss can be configured as low as the transmission loss of known filters that can add / drop a single wavelength, which is And / or the distance between connection points can be increased for a given link loss setting.
[0012]
Preferably, the ring configuration is passive and does not include optical amplification means for optically amplifying WDM optical signals passing around the ring. Alternatively, the ring may include optical amplification means for optically amplifying WDM optical signals passing around the ring.
[0013]
The network is fully meshed, and each connection point preferably includes add and drop filters such that every connection point is connectable to every other connection point by a respective wavelength channel. . In a preferred arrangement, a single wavelength channel forms the connection between each pair of connection points, but using one or more wavelength channels to increase the transmission capacity, each wavelength channel A connection between the connection points can be formed. Each filter advantageously adds or removes either a single or two adjacent wavelength channels.
[0014]
The add and drop filters advantageously include a dielectric filter stack. Alternatively, the add and drop filters can include a resonant cavity or a fiber optic Bragg gate. Each filter preferably has an insertion loss of 0.5 dBm or less. Each filter preferably has a figure of merit of 0.7 or greater.
[0015]
For a better understanding of the invention, a wavelength division multiplexing optical network according to the invention will be described below, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
[0016]
(Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention)
FIG. 1 shows a schematic diagram of a fully meshed duplex fiber optic wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network according to the present invention. The network includes six connection points 2a-2f, which are connected to one another in a point-to-point series by optical fibers 4a-4f in a continuous loop or ring configuration. In the configuration shown, the typical total path length around the ring, which is the coupling length of optical fibers 4a-4f, is on the order of 40km, giving a loss on the order of 10dBm associated with the fiber.
[0017]
There are many, three add-drop filter modules 6 in the network shown in FIG. 1, installed at each connection point and connected in series in the ring. One such add-drop filter module 6 is shown in FIG.
[0018]
Each add-drop filter module 6 includes a respective add optical filter 8 and a respective drop optical filter 10, each of which is connected in series in a ring. Each add filter 8 is configured such that one or more selected wavelength channels λ N, M can be added to the ring, while the remaining wavelength channels pass around the ring with substantially no attenuation. It can be so. Each drop filter 10 is configured such that one or more selected wavelength channels λ N, M can be removed from the ring, while the remaining wavelength channels can pass through the ring with substantially no attenuation. To do.
[0019]
Both optical filters 8, 10 include thin film dielectric filter stacks, resonant cavities, or Bragg gates, which allow one or more selected wavelength channels of the WDM optical signal to pass, but not others. Have transmission passbands selected to be able to reflect the wavelength channels of In general, each filter will have a transmission (insertion or pass-through) loss of about 0.5 dBm associated with the wavelength channel that the filter reflects, and add or remove the or each selected wavelength channel. And a transmission loss which is a loss of 1.5 dBm. An important characteristic of the optical filters 8, 10 is the figure of merit (FOM), which gives a measure of the selectivity of the filter with respect to the wavelength channel, which is the figure of merit of the passband wavelength in the transmission of -3 dBm, -25 dBm It is the ratio to the passband wavelength in transmission. The passband of each filter is wide enough to allow the selected wavelength channel or wavelength channels to pass without substantial attenuation, and that the wavelength channels pass through with substantially no attenuation. It is necessary that the passband can be selected sufficiently to be substantially reflective to the other channels in order to guarantee. For example, for wavelength channels with 100 GHz spacing, the FOM would typically need to be 0.7 or more.
[0020]
Referring again to FIG. 1, at the connection points 2a to 2f, the wavelength channel to be added or deleted by the add and drop filters 8 and 10, it should be noted that represented by lambda 15 from lambda 1. According to the report, in the configuration shown, the connection point 2a is, for the wavelength channel, are connected to the connection point 2b by wavelength channel lambda 1, also respective connection points wavelength channel lambda 7, the lambda 10, lambda 9 and lambda 6 It can be seen that they are connected to 2c to 2f. For purposes of illustration, the connections of the wavelength channels are shown in dashed lines in FIG. 1, but it should be understood that the connections do not imply a physical connection by optical fibers between these connection points. As can be seen from Figure 1, the network is a point to say that the connection points 2a~2f is connectable to all other connection points by a respective wavelength channel lambda 1 to [lambda] 15, is fully reticulated I have.
[0021]
An important feature of the network design of the present invention is the manner in which wavelength channels are assigned to each connection. Referring to FIG. 1, note that wavelength channels have been assigned to maximize the number of adjacent wavelength channel connections at each connection point using the algorithm shown in the flowchart of FIG. I want to be. For example, node 2a has adjacent channels λ 6,7 and λ 9,10 , node 2b has channels λ 1,2 and λ 12,13 and node 2c has channels λ 2,3 and λ 9. 7 , 8 ; channels λ 3,4 and λ 10,11 at node 2d; channels λ 4,5 and λ 8,9 at node 2e; channels λ 5,6 at node 2f. And λ 11,12 . For each of these adjacent wavelength channels, a single add-drop filter module is provided, in which each add and drop filter is adjacent, as described above. It has a passband wide enough to add / remove channels. Therefore, in the case of the network shown in FIG. 1, a total of 18 add-drop filter modules 6, that is, 6 single-wavelength channel filter modules and 12 2-channel filter modules are required. is there. In contrast, known network designs, in which each add-drop filter module adds / removes a single wavelength channel, require a total of 30 filter modules. As discussed above, by carefully designing the add and drop optical filters, their transmission loss is substantially the same as the transmission loss of a filter module operable to add / remove a single wavelength. Which results in a significant advantage in terms of transmission (pass) loss around the ring due to the reduced number of add and drop filters. Perhaps the filters will have larger transmission losses for their chosen wavelengths, but the increase in this loss is more than offset by the loss in the transmission path around the ring. .
[0022]
In an optimal full mesh network configuration, each add-drop filter module adds either a single wavelength channel or two adjacent wavelength channels to minimize the total number of filter modules And must be deleted. Table 1 tabulates the number of such filter modules required for a fully meshed duplex network having three to nine attachment points. For comparison, the table also includes the number of filter modules required for a fully meshed duplex network using filter modules that can add and remove only a single wavelength channel. As can be seen from the table, the reduction in the number of filter modules, and thus in the transmission losses, is more pronounced as the number of connections increases. Of course, for a given link loss setting and a given transmission loss for each filter, the network configuration according to the invention can have at least one more connection point than known network designs. Although the above network was related to a passive ring, it goes without saying that the network according to the invention also has advantages in networks that include amplification means for amplifying WDM optical signals passing around the ring. Bring. In such a network, the length (perimeter around the ring) and / or number of connection points can be increased or the amplification can be reduced as compared to known networks.
[0023]
Referring to FIG. 3, there is shown a flowchart for assigning a wavelength channel to each of the add / drop filters at each connection point of the WDM network according to the present invention. The algorithm for maximizing the number of adjacent wavelength channels at each connection point is suitable for any network configuration, and is not limited to the above-described complete mesh ring configuration.
[0024]
The input data n, k and c (x, y) of this algorithm include the number of connection points, the number of duplicated interconnections between connection points, and an array specifying the required connection between connection points, respectively. The calculated wavelength lambda (λ) for each connection is stored in the array w (x, y) and the temporary numerical variables a, b and c are used during the calculation. The arrays c (x, y) and w (x, y) are n-by-n matrices, with rows representing starting connection points and columns representing final connection points. A zero in the matrix c (x, y) indicates that no connection is required between each connection point, and a value greater than zero, generally one, indicates that a connection is required. Show. Since it is not possible to have an interconnect for a single connection point, x = y in both arrays, i.e. all values on the descending diagonal will be zero. In any case of a fully meshed network with duplicated connections between all connection points, the remaining values in the array are all ones. For example, in the case of the network of FIG. 1 where n = 6 and k = 15, the arrays c (x, y) and w (x, y) are respectively given by the following equations.
[0025]
From the matrix w (x, y), the connection between
[0026]
As described, this algorithm is for assigning a single wavelength channel or interconnect between all two attachment points. Of course, this algorithm allows multiple wavelength connections between all two nodes up to the maximum number of wavelength connections between all two nodes by specifying an additional connection array c (x, y). You can easily change it to The algorithm then needs to be modified to check these additional connection arrays for whether a wavelength has already been assigned for the connection. For example, if it is required to have two wavelength connections between the connection points 2b and 2d of the network of FIG. 1, c 1 (2,4) = c 1 (4,2) = 1, One additional connection array c 1 (x, y), where all remaining values are zero, will be required.
[0027]
Needless to say, the WDM of the present invention is not limited to the specific embodiment described, and can be modified within the technical scope of the present invention. For example, it will be appreciated that many add and drop filters are unidirectional in nature, and thus only allow WDM signals to pass around the ring in a single direction. With such an arrangement, all of the wavelength interconnects between the connection points are unprotected. For example, in the network of FIG. 1, the wavelength channel for connecting the connection point 2b and 2d each other are lambda 13. In such a network, in which WDM optical signals can only propagate in a clockwise direction, information is transmitted from node 2b to node 2d via optical fibers 4b and 4c, while node From 2d to 2b will be transmitted through the fibers 4d, 4e, 4f and 4a. As a result, if any fiber breaks, one direction of each interconnect will be lost. To provide a protected path, a double ring optical fiber or a bidirectional ring can be used.
[0028]
At each connection point, using both add-drop filter modules that can add / drop single and adjacent wavelengths minimizes the total number of filter modules, and in another arrangement, 2 Add-drop filter modules can be additionally used to add / remove more than one adjacent wavelength channel. In one such arrangement, three different types of filter modules can be used, such as adding / deleting a single adjacent pair and three adjacent channels. In a network of 6 nodes using such a filter module, a total of 16 filter modules are required. While such an arrangement reduces the total number of filter modules, it requires many more different types of add and drop filters, and the potential increased costs associated therewith can benefit from a loss perspective. May be spoiled.
