ボールマーカーは、他人のものと識別できるよう各競技者が異なるデザインのものを使用することが望ましい。したがって競技者は、自分専用のボールマーカーを常に持ち運ぶべきだが、競技者のポケットの中にはボールマーカー以外にもティーなどの各種道具やロッカーの鍵など、多くの小物を持ち歩いている。そのためボールマーカーをポケットから取り出す際、探り当てるまでに時間が掛かったり、気づかないうちに鍵などを落としてしまう恐れもある。
