Abstract
Description
【0001】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a portable fuel cell used as a portable power supply for portable electronic devices such as a mobile phone, a portable terminal, and a notebook personal computer.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Conventional fuel cells are equipped with a capacitor and a small secondary battery in case the amount of information processing of the portable device increases and the amount of power generated by the fuel cell alone cannot cover the required power of the portable device. Electric power is supplied from fuel cells and capacitors and small secondary batteries. Further, electric power is supplied from a secondary battery for starting to a heater as an auxiliary heating means of the fuel cell, and the heater directly heats a peripheral portion of the fuel cell (for example, see Patent Document 1).
[0003]
[Patent Document 1]
Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 2002-231290
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, in such a portable fuel cell, although a fuel cell and a secondary battery are combined, no consideration has been given to protection of each cell. If one of the fuel cell and the secondary battery deteriorates because there is no protection circuit, the maximum output cannot be output. Therefore, only a limited function of the portable device can be used, or the use time is shortened.
[0005]
If a backflow prevention circuit is not provided as a protection circuit for the fuel cell, when the output of the fuel cell is reduced due to running out of fuel, current flows from the secondary battery back to the fuel cell. Further, when the device circuit is suddenly cut off, a surge current flows to the fuel cell, and the characteristics of the fuel cell deteriorate.
[0006]
Further, a normal secondary battery protection circuit has an overcharge / overdischarge prevention circuit that monitors the voltage between terminals of the secondary battery and prevents overcharge and overdischarge. That is, when the inter-terminal voltage drops below a preset threshold, the outflow of current is stopped to prevent overdischarge, and when the inter-terminal voltage rises above a preset threshold, the inflow of current is stopped. Prevents overcharging. However, in a portable fuel cell in which a fuel cell and a secondary battery are combined, the terminal voltage of the secondary battery is equal to the output voltage of the fuel cell. Therefore, even if the voltage between the terminals of the secondary battery alone decreases, the voltage between the terminals connected together does not change because the fuel cell is generating power. As described above, it is useless in a normal secondary battery overcharge / overdischarge prevention circuit. As a result, there is a problem that overcharge and overdischarge occur, and the life of the secondary battery is shortened.
[0007]
An object of the present invention is to provide a portable fuel cell in which the characteristics of the fuel cell and the secondary battery are less deteriorated.
[0008]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
A portable fuel cell according to the present invention comprises a fuel cell connected in series to an electric load, a secondary cell connected in parallel to the fuel cell, and a switch means for switching connections between the fuel cell, the secondary cell and the electric load. When an overcharged or overdischarged state of the secondary battery is detected based on the voltage between the terminals of the secondary battery, the switch means is controlled to disconnect the secondary battery from the fuel cell and the electric load, and Overcharge / overdischarge prevention means for preventing overcharge or overdischarge.

For example, after repeating charging and discharging a large number of times compared to the new full charge capacity, the full charge capacity decreases to about half, but it is determined from the voltage between the no-load terminals that the battery is fully charged, and the secondary battery at that time is determined. Since the capacity is calibrated to the full charge capacity, it does not discharge too much.
[0028]
In addition, since the temporary current is interrupted during charging and discharging and the voltage between the no-load terminals is measured, the capacity can be accurately obtained without the influence of deterioration of the secondary battery. In addition, it is possible to eliminate the influence of the fluctuation of the inter-terminal voltage due to the magnitude of the current consumption of the device circuit, so that overcharging does not occur.
[0029]
Further, since current can be prevented from flowing into the fuel cell, deterioration of the electrodes of the fuel cell can be prevented.
[0030]
Although a lithium ion battery has been described as an example of a secondary battery, it is also possible to prevent deterioration of the secondary battery when a nickel cadmium battery, a nickel hydride battery, a lead storage battery, or the like is connected in parallel to the fuel cell. it can. The difference between the full charge and the end of discharge of the voltage between terminals of nickel cadmium batteries and nickel hydrogen batteries is about 0.3 V. However, use a high-precision voltmeter to estimate the capacity from the no-load terminal voltage. Can be.
[0031]
A similar effect can be obtained by using the decrease in terminal voltage (−ΔV) or the rapid increase in battery temperature (ΔT), which is observed when the nickel cadmium battery and the nickel hydride battery are fully charged, together with the charge / discharge control. .

Therefore, when the fuel cell is manufactured by micromachine technology, the space efficiency is increased. Further, when a fuel cell is formed using a silicon substrate, a semiconductor circuit can be formed over the same silicon substrate, so that a control circuit such as a diode or a transistor can be easily formed. By doing so, the volume of the control circuit is reduced, so that the fuel portion of the fuel cell can be increased. Further, the volume of the secondary battery can be increased. As a result, the use time can be extended and the maximum output power can be increased.
[0037]
In such a portable fuel cell, since the separator of the fuel cell is processed on a silicon substrate by a micromachine technique, a control circuit can also be formed on the silicon substrate, and the volume of the control circuit is reduced. Therefore, the fuel of the fuel cell can be increased, and the volume of the secondary battery can be increased. As a result, the use time can be extended and the maximum output power can be increased.
[0038]
The protection circuit may be formed on the surface (air electrode side) of the cell or may be formed on the back side (fuel side). When formed on the back side, the area of the air electrode can be increased, so that the output of the fuel cell can be increased.

【The invention's effect】
The effect of the portable fuel cell according to the present invention is that the fuel cell connected in series to the electric load, the secondary battery connected in parallel to the fuel cell, and the connection to each of the fuel cell, the secondary battery and the electric load are switched. When the overcharge or overdischarge state of the secondary battery is detected based on the voltage between the terminals of the switch and the secondary battery, the secondary battery is separated from the fuel cell and the electric load by controlling the switch to control the switch. Since it has overcharge / overdischarge prevention means for preventing overcharge or overdischarge of the battery, it is possible to prevent overcharge / overdischarge of the secondary battery and to prevent current from flowing into the fuel cell. In addition, deterioration of the fuel cell can be reduced.
