TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention includes an image carrier on which a toner image is formed on a surface, and an opposing member disposed to oppose the surface of the image carrier, and a transfer nip portion between the image carrier and the opposing member. The present invention relates to an image forming apparatus that passes a recording medium and transfers a toner image formed on the surface of the image carrier to the recording medium by the action of a transfer electric field formed between the image carrier and the opposing member.
[0002]
[Prior art]
An image forming apparatus of the above type configured as a copier, a printer, a facsimile, or a multifunction peripheral thereof has been conventionally known. The image carrier is configured as a photoconductor on which a toner image is formed, or as an intermediate transfer body on which the toner image formed on the photoconductor is transferred. The toner image formed on the surface of the image carrier is electrostatically transferred to a recording medium as a final transfer material.
[0003]
In the image forming apparatus of the type described above, so-called pre-transfer occurs in a region upstream of the transfer nip in the recording medium transport direction, and as a result, toner scatters around a regular toner image transferred on the recording medium. There is a problem that transfer dust adheres in a state where the toner image is deteriorated, and the image quality of the toner image is deteriorated. An electric field is formed in the area upstream of the transfer nip in the recording medium transport direction so that the toner on the image carrier moves to the recording medium. Pre-transfer that occurs electrostatically occurs. At this time, if there is a large gap between the image carrier and the recording medium, the toner on the image carrier flies toward the recording medium, thereby causing transfer dust. It happens.
[0004]
In order to eliminate the above-mentioned drawback, in a region upstream of the transfer nip portion, the recording medium is brought into contact with the surface of the image carrier so that no gap is formed between the recording medium and the image carrier. There has been proposed an image forming apparatus that prevents transfer to a recording medium in a state where toner is scattered even when pre-transfer occurs (for example, see Patent Document 1).
[0005]
FIG. 11 is a schematic diagram showing an example of the image forming apparatus according to the above-described conventional proposal. The image carrier of the image forming apparatus shown here is constituted by an endless belt-shaped

Here, a region upstream of the transfer nip portion N in the recording medium conveyance direction is defined as a transfer entrance portion a, and a region downstream thereof is defined as a transfer exit portion b. An electric field in a direction in which the toner on the
[0008]
As described above, even with the image forming apparatus according to the conventional proposal, it is possible to suppress the occurrence of transfer dust.
[0009]
However, in this type of image forming apparatus, in addition to the above-described transfer dust, a phenomenon called “bleeding” occurs in which the toner on the recording medium P is scattered at the transfer outlet b, which also reduces the image quality of the toner image. to degrade. The occurrence of such a bleeding phenomenon cannot be prevented by the conventional image forming apparatus shown in FIG. This bleeding phenomenon often occurs in a solid portion of the toner image transferred on the recording medium P when the toner amount is large, particularly when a plurality of toner images of different colors are transferred on the recording medium. , Also known as Bettachiri.
[0010]
The cause of the above-mentioned stickiness is considered as follows.
[0011]
When the recording medium P enters the transfer nip portion N, the recording medium P is charged by the action of the electric field formed at the transfer entrance a, and at this time, the surface P1 of the recording medium on which the toner image T is transferred. An imbalance occurs between the charge amount and the opposite charge amount on the back surface P2 side. As shown in FIG. 11, if there is a large gap between the recording medium P located at the transfer entrance a and the
[0012]
FIG. 12 is an explanatory diagram schematically showing the recording medium P after passing through the transfer nip portion and the toner image T transferred to the surface P1. The back surface P2 of the recording medium is charged to the opposite polarity (positive in the example in the figure) to the toner charge polarity of the toner image T, and the charge amount is larger than the charge amount of the front surface P1. For this reason, the toner located near the background portion of the surface P1 of the recording medium P is electrostatically attracted toward the background portion around the toner image T as indicated by an arrow X in FIG. The toner adheres to the background. This is a phenomenon that is referred to as bleeding or fouling.
[0013]
As shown by
[0014]
As described above, the image forming apparatus according to the conventional proposal can suppress or prevent the generation of the transfer dust on the side of the transfer entrance a, but can prevent the generation of the dust on the side of the transfer exit b. The occurrence could not be prevented or suppressed.
