[0007]
The present invention has been made to solve the above problems, and has as its object to provide a lighting device that can efficiently use a light beam emitted from a light source.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a projection display device capable of securing the brightness of an image.
[0008]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to achieve the above object, the lighting device according to the present invention is a lighting device in which a virtual image formed by a light emitting unit in a light source or a lens effect of a package in the light source is disposed at a first focal position of a concave mirror. Among the light emitted from the lens, a lens that converts light that does not enter the concave mirror into parallel light,
(Equation 6)
And the lens is arranged such that the front focal position of the lens coincides with the first focal position of the concave mirror. Where L is the radius of the lens, f2 is the focal length of the lens, Ymax is the maximum radius of the concave mirror, Xmax is the maximum depth of the concave mirror, and f1 is the first focal point of the concave mirror. Distance.
[0009]
According to this configuration, all the light emitted from the light source at an angle equal to or less than the predetermined angle with respect to the optical axis and not incident on the concave mirror can be incident on the lens and converted into parallel light by refraction. Thereby, the utilization efficiency of the light source light can be improved.
[0010]
Further, the reflecting surface shape of the concave mirror is
(Equation 7)
It is desirable that it is formed so as to satisfy the following. Here, X is a coordinate value in the optical axis direction, and Y is a coordinate value in the radial direction of the concave mirror. According to this configuration, light emitted from the light source at an angle equal to or larger than the predetermined angle with respect to the optical axis can be reflected by the concave mirror and converted into parallel light. Therefore, all of the light emitted from the light source can be converted into parallel light, and the efficiency of using the light source light can be improved.
[0011]
The radius L of the lens is
(Equation 8)
It is desirable that it is formed so as to satisfy the following. Here, β is the light distribution limit angle of the light source with respect to the optical axis.
Further, the light source is a solid-state light source whose light distribution limit angle with respect to the optical axis is about 90 °, and the radius L of the lens is:
(Equation 9)
And the focal length f2 of the lens is
(Equation 10)
May be formed.
[0012]
According to this configuration, the light emitted from the light source in the vicinity of the light distribution limit angle of the light source is not reflected on the concave mirror and converted into parallel light, and thereafter does not enter the lens disposed behind. Therefore, such light can be emitted as parallel light without being refracted by the lens, and the utilization efficiency of the light source light can be improved.
[0013]
On the other hand, a projection type display device according to the present invention includes the above-described illumination device, and light modulation means for receiving light emitted from the illumination device. According to this configuration, since all of the light from the light source is converted into parallel light by the above-described lighting device, almost all of the light from the light source can be used for image display. Therefore, the brightness of the image can be secured.

LEDs are diodes that emit light when current flows through the junction. In an LED having a simple homojunction structure, p-type semiconductor and n-type semiconductor crystals are made of the same material. When a forward bias voltage is applied to an LED having a homojunction structure, electrons of the n-type semiconductor move to the p-type semiconductor, fall from a high-energy conduction band to a low-energy valence band, and recombine with holes. The energy lost at that time is emitted as light, and the LED emits light. Note that the color of emitted light depends on the energy difference (band gap) between the conduction band and the valence band, and the band gap is determined by the semiconductor material used. For example, red light is emitted when AlGaAs or the like is used, green light is emitted when GaP or the like is used, and blue light is emitted when InGaN or the like is used. Thus, the LED is a monochromatic light source.
[0018]
In addition, since the light emitting efficiency is low in the LED having the homo junction structure, it is preferable to adopt the LED having the double hetero junction structure or the quantum well junction structure as the

(Equation 11)
Here, r is the radius of curvature of the reflector, and k is a constant determined by the shape of the reflector. Assuming that the distance from the base point of the reflector to the front (upstream) focal point is f1, r = 2 · f1 holds regardless of the shape of the reflector. Here, f1 is the first focal length of the reflector, which is the distance from the base point of the reflector to the first focal position. On the other hand, as the shape of the reflector, a spherical mirror or an elliptical mirror having a light condensing function can be used, but a parabolic mirror (parabolic mirror) in which reflected light is parallel light is preferably used. In the case of this parabolic type, the above constant is k = -1. By substituting these into the above equation and rearranging for Y, the reflecting surface shape of the parabolic reflector can be expressed by the following equation.

[0030]
As described in detail above, the illumination device according to the present embodiment has a lens that converts light that does not enter the reflector into light parallel to the light emitted from the light source, and has a focal length f2 and a radius of the lens. L is
[Equation 23]
, And the lens is arranged such that the front focal position of the lens coincides with the first focal position of the reflector. According to this configuration, all the light emitted from the light source at an angle equal to or smaller than the predetermined angle with respect to the optical axis and not incident on the reflector can be incident on the lens and converted into parallel light by refraction. Thereby, light use efficiency can be improved.
[0031]
Further, the reflection surface shape of the reflector is as follows:
(Equation 24)
Was formed so as to satisfy the above. According to this configuration, the light emitted from the light source at an angle equal to or greater than the predetermined angle with respect to the optical axis can be reflected by the reflector and converted into parallel light. Therefore, all of the light emitted from the light source can be converted into parallel light, and the light use efficiency can be improved.
[0032]
Further, the radius L of the lens is
(Equation 25)
Was formed so as to satisfy the above. According to this configuration, light emitted from the light source near the light distribution limit angle of the light source does not enter the lens after being reflected by the reflector and converted into parallel light. Therefore, such light can be emitted as parallel light without being refracted by the lens, and the light use efficiency can be improved.

Further, a polarizing plate (not shown) is arranged on the incident side and the outgoing side of each liquid crystal light valve. Then, of the light beams from each light source, only linearly polarized light in a predetermined direction passes through the incident side polarizing plate and enters each liquid crystal light valve. Further, a polarization conversion means (not shown) may be provided in front of the incident side polarizing plate. In this case, it is possible to recycle the luminous flux reflected by the incident-side polarizing plate and make the luminous flux enter each liquid crystal light valve, thereby improving the light use efficiency.

[0038]
As described above, since all of the light from the light source is converted into parallel light by the lighting device according to the present embodiment, almost all of the light from the light source can be used for image display. Therefore, the brightness of the image can be secured. In addition, since the light beam can be made incident on the light modulating means such as a liquid crystal light valve at a nearly vertical angle, all the light beams can be modulated by the light modulating means. Therefore, the contrast ratio of the image can be improved.
[0039]
Note that the technical scope of the present invention is not limited to the above-described embodiments, and includes various modifications of the above-described embodiments without departing from the spirit of the present invention. That is, the specific materials and configurations described in the embodiments are merely examples, and can be appropriately changed.
