Abstract
Description
【0001】

The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display device having a backlight and a liquid crystal display element enclosing a STN (Super Twisted Nematic) liquid crystal composition, and in particular, the STN liquid crystal composition contains an anthraquinone dichroic dye. Liquid crystal display device.
[0002]
[Prior art]
2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, a liquid crystal display element in which an STN liquid crystal composition is sealed between two transparent substrates on which an alignment film is formed (hereinafter, referred to as an STN type liquid crystal display element) is suitable for high-density display and is therefore used in automobiles. It is widely used for displays of various in-vehicle devices such as a speedometer, a tachometer, an odometer, and a trip meter in an instrument panel. In addition, as a display of the vehicle-mounted device, a negative liquid crystal display element that displays black when a background color is applied (in a cut-off state) when an off-drive voltage is applied and white when an on-drive voltage is applied (in a transmission state). In the STN-type liquid crystal display element, a negative type STN-type liquid crystal display element for displaying, for example, yellow-orange (on part) on a black (off part) background color is often used. Has been.
[0003]
The negative type STN type liquid crystal display element has a high temperature dependency, and has a problem that a display color is different depending on an environmental temperature. Therefore, light is absorbed in the STN liquid crystal composition depending on the direction of polarized light. The so-called "guest-host effect," which contains azo dichroic dyes of different amounts and changes the color and intensity of transmitted light by controlling the orientation of dye molecules with respect to incident light by changing the molecular arrangement of liquid crystals. Had to be made.
[0004]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
By the way, as described above, the liquid crystal display element as the display of the in-vehicle device may have a use environment temperature in a low temperature range near -25 ° C, and conversely, a high temperature range near 70 ° C. In some cases, driving in a wide temperature range is required.
[0005]
However, it is known that the azo dichroic dye has a structure in which the azo group (-N = N-) has a double structure of two nitrogen atoms and is easily decomposed structurally. In particular, there is a concern that when the operating environment temperature is high, specific resistance is reduced due to thermal decomposition, which may cause display unevenness.
[0006]
In view of the above, the present invention provides a liquid crystal capable of maintaining a background color, enabling uniform display, and obtaining good visibility in a wide temperature range, particularly in a high temperature range near 70 ° C. It is an object to provide a display device.
[0007]

The angle θ1 to the polarization axis of the polarizing plate on the viewing side is 130 to 160 °, and the angle θ2 from the reference line to the polarization axis of the polarizing plate on the anti-viewing side is 75 to 105 °, and the STN liquid crystal composition It is characterized in that an anthraquinone dichroic dye having a maximum absorption wavelength of 530 to 615 nm is contained in a ratio of 0.8 to 4.0% by weight.
[0008]
Further, another liquid crystal display device according to the present invention is a liquid crystal display device in which an STN liquid crystal composition is sealed between two substrates on each of which an alignment film is formed, and a polarizing plate is provided on an outer surface of each of the two substrates. And a backlight having a main emission wavelength of 610 to 680 nm, and a clockwise rotation with respect to the alignment axis of the alignment film on the viewing side of the liquid crystal display element from the reference line to the viewing side. The angle θ1 to the polarizing axis of the plate is 30 to 65 °, the angle θ2 from the reference line to the polarizing axis of the polarizing plate on the opposite viewing side is 15 to 45 °, and in the STN liquid crystal composition, An anthraquinone dichroic dye having a maximum absorption wavelength of 600 to 680 nm is contained in a proportion of 0.5 to 3.0% by weight.
[0009]
By adopting these structures, the liquid crystal display device of the present invention can obtain a desired display with no display unevenness and good contrast in a wide temperature range.
