Abstract
Description
【0001】

Description of the Related Art In recent years, in electronic devices such as a notebook computer, a mobile phone, and an electronic organizer, a display device such as an organic EL device including an organic electroluminescence (hereinafter, referred to as an organic EL) element corresponding to a pixel as means for displaying information has been proposed. ing.
[0003]
As one of such organic EL devices, there is a passive matrix type (simple matrix type) organic EL device. In general, this passive matrix type organic EL device has a plurality of first electrodes formed on a substrate and extending in a band in a predetermined direction, and a plurality of bands arranged in a direction perpendicular to the first electrodes. A second electrode, and an organic functional layer vertically interposed between the first electrode and the second electrode in an intersecting region of the first electrode and the second electrode. The organic functional layer includes a light emitting layer that emits light when a current flows through the first electrode and the second electrode. In the passive matrix type organic EL device, the organic functional layer including the light emitting layer corresponds to one pixel. It is configured by providing a plurality of such components.
[0004]
Incidentally, the second electrode of such a passive matrix type organic EL device is generally formed by a vacuum evaporation method. According to this vacuum deposition method, as is well known, a separator having a predetermined thickness is provided between the regions where the second electrodes are formed, and the second electrode material is deposited in a direction perpendicular or oblique to the substrate surface. By doing so, the second electrodes are separated from each other. When the organic functional layer is formed by the droplet discharging method, the organic functional layer material is discharged by discharging the organic functional layer material on the first electrodes exposed between the above-described separators, and then drying to form the organic functional layer. .
[0005]
However, depending on the drying conditions, the organic functional layer may be formed so as to protrude along the side wall of the separator. When the second electrode material is deposited in such a state, the second electrode deposited on the separator may be formed. The material and the second electrode material deposited between the separators may come into contact with each other, and as a result, the second electrodes may be electrically connected to each other, causing a short circuit.
[0006]
Even if the organic functional layer is formed in a state of being raised along the side wall of the separator, the second electrodes are separated from each other by depositing the second electrode material obliquely with respect to the substrate surface. be able to. However, in this case, since the second electrode does not completely cover the organic functional layer, there is a problem that the organic functional layer is easily deteriorated by moisture or the like.
[0007]
[Patent Document 1]
JP-A-11-87063
The present invention has been made in view of the above problems, and has the following objects.
(1) To provide an organic EL device in which a short circuit caused by contact between second electrodes is prevented.
(2) To provide an organic EL device having a good emission life.
[0009]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to achieve the above object, an organic EL device according to the present invention includes a plurality of first electrodes formed on a substrate, a plurality of first electrodes extending in a band crossing the first electrodes, and a plurality of first electrodes. A plurality of separators for separation, a second electrode formed between the separators, and an organic function formed between the first electrode and the second electrode in an intersection region between the first electrode and the second electrode An organic EL device, comprising: a bank layer having an opening corresponding to an intersecting region between a first electrode and a second electrode, wherein the organic functional layer is formed inside the opening of the bank layer. It is characterized by being performed.
[0010]
Further, the method for manufacturing an organic EL device according to the present invention is a method for manufacturing an organic EL device in which an organic functional layer is formed between electrodes, and includes a step of forming a plurality of first electrodes on a substrate, Forming a bank layer having an opening corresponding to the region, forming a plurality of separators for separating the second electrode, and forming an organic functional layer inside the opening of the bank layer; Forming a second electrode between the separators.
[0011]
According to the organic EL device having such a configuration, since the separator and the bank layer are provided separately, when the organic functional layer material is discharged by the droplet discharge method into the opening formed in the bank layer, the organic EL device is not used. All of the discharged organic functional layer material enters the opening without adhering to the side wall of the separator. Therefore, the organic functional layer material does not adhere to the side wall of the separator after drying. For this reason, since the organic functional layer does not rise along the side wall of the separator after drying, even if the second electrode material is formed by vapor deposition, the second electrode material deposited on the separator and the second electrode material deposited between the separators Does not contact. As a result, it is possible to separate the second electrodes. That is, it is possible to provide an organic EL device in which a short circuit caused by contact between the second electrodes is prevented.
[0012]
In the present invention, the thickness of the bank layer is preferably equal to or greater than the thickness of the organic functional layer. By employing such a configuration, all the layers are formed, particularly when the organic functional layer is a laminate in which a hole injection / transport layer, a light emitting layer, an electron injection / transport layer, and the like are laminated. In this case, the material for forming each layer can be discharged to the opening of the bank layer. Therefore, it is possible to prevent the above-mentioned material from adhering to the side wall of the separator, and as a result, it is possible to more reliably separate the second electrodes.
[0013]
Further, the second electrode of the present invention is formed so as to cover an opening formed in the bank layer. By employing such a configuration, the organic functional layer is accommodated in a space surrounded by the first electrode, the second electrode, and the bank layer. For this reason, it becomes possible to protect the organic functional layer from moisture, air, and the like that enter from the outside, and as a result, it is possible to provide an organic EL device having a good emission life.
[0014]
Further, the separator of the present invention is preferably formed in a reverse tapered shape, and the second electrode material is preferably deposited from a direction perpendicular to the substrate surface. When the second electrode is formed by a vacuum deposition method, it is not easy to accurately position the end in the width direction of the second electrode. Therefore, by adopting the above-described configuration, the second electrode material can be surely deposited so as to cover the opening of the bank layer without accurately positioning the end in the width direction of the second electrode. Becomes possible.
[0015]
Next, the method for manufacturing an organic EL device according to the present invention includes a step of making the surface of the bank layer lyophobic and making the first electrode exposed at the opening of the bank layer lyophilic. By this step, the surface of the bank layer is made lyophobic and the first electrode exposed at the opening of the bank layer is made lyophilic, so that the position at which the organic functional layer material is discharged by the droplet discharging method is shifted. Even when a part of the organic functional layer material adheres to the upper surface of the bank layer or the like, it is possible to reliably guide the organic functional layer material onto the lyophilic first electrode.
[0016]
Next, an electronic apparatus according to the present invention includes the above-described organic EL device as a display unit. Examples of the electronic device of the present invention include a notebook computer, a mobile phone, an electronic organizer, a clock, and an information processing device such as a word processor. By employing the organic EL device according to the present invention for the display portion of such an electronic device, it is possible to provide an electronic device in which a short circuit caused by contact between the second electrodes is prevented, and to display a good emission life. It is possible to provide an electronic device including the unit.
