TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an image processing apparatus and method, and more particularly to an image processing apparatus and method for expanding compressed image data and performing resolution conversion.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Conventionally, an image processing apparatus of this type is, for example, a laser printer, which transmits image information described in a printer description language (PDL) or the like from a host computer, converts the image information into bitmap data in a control unit, and converts the information into a printer engine. And a printer engine transfers and fixes it on recording paper or the like to obtain a desired print result.
[0003]
As such a laser printer, there is one that prints at a resolution of, for example, 600 dots / inch. In that case, the pixels that make up the character or image are printed at grid positions at 600 dpi. Recently, higher resolution of a printer engine has been realized, and a printer capable of printing at a resolution of 1200 dpi has appeared.
[0004]
However, the amount of bitmap data of A4 size paper at a resolution of 600 dpi reaches 4 Mbytes and reaches 16 Mbytes at 1200 dpi. Further, in the case of a printer having a double-sided printing function, two pages are required to guarantee printing, that is, 8 Mbytes at 600 dpi and 32 Mbytes at 1200 dpi.
[0005]
For this reason, it has become common to reduce the capacity of the image memory by compressing and storing the bitmap information on the image memory, and transmitting it while expanding it when sending it to the printer engine.
[0006]
On the other hand, a method of increasing the resolution in the main scanning direction is relatively easy due to the structure of the laser printer, and various methods such as a smoothing process have been tried. The smoothing process is a method of outputting a pixel having a resolution of 600 dpi or more from a target pixel of 600 dpi and its surrounding M × N to remove jagged edges, and a resolution equivalent to 2400 dpi × 600 dpi can be obtained.
[0007]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
In order to increase the data compression ratio, more reference tables for encoding are required. Since the reference tables require high-speed access to data, they are often constituted by SRAMs. The look-up table is realized by storing data in a data holding circuit. Generally, an SRAM or a flip-flop is used. However, if a large reference area of the table is required, a flip-flop is used to increase the gate scale. Therefore, the SRAM is used. Since a reference table of the same size is required for the decompression process, a data decompression circuit is configured by using an external SRAM or an SRAM with a built-in ASIC. Also, the smoothing processing circuit needs a reference window near the pixel of interest and needs to perform high-speed processing in the main scanning direction. Like the reference table in the circuit, an external SRAM or an SRAM with a built-in ASIC constitutes a smoothing processing circuit.
[0008]
However, when the resolution of the SRAM is 600 dpi and the size of A3 paper is A200, the number of main scanning dots of A3 is 7200 dots. If 8 lines of sub-scanning are required, the capacity of the SRAM reaches 7200 × 8 = 57.6 kbits. Since it is necessary for both the smoothing process, the SRAM capacity is increased, and especially when the ASIC is built in, the die size of the chip becomes large, which is a big problem in cost.
[0009]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to solve the above-described problem, the image processing apparatus that expands the compressed image data according to the present invention and further performs resolution conversion is an expansion processing unit that expands the compressed image data, and performs a smoothing process on the image data. A smoothing processing means for outputting smooth characters and images, and a data holding circuit control means capable of commonly using a data holding circuit used in the decompression processing means and a data holding circuit used in the smoothing processing. And

BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
Hereinafter, preferred embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.
[0011]
FIG. 1 is a block diagram of a laser beam printer (hereinafter, referred to as a printer) according to an embodiment of the present invention. In FIG. 1, reference numeral 101 denotes a host computer connected to the printer 102, which transmits image information created by application software or the like as a command or data D1 to a controller 103 in the printer 102 via an interface (not shown). Is done. The controller 103 develops RGB multi-valued bit data D2 (for example, 8 bits) corresponding to 300 dpi pixels according to the command or the data.
[0012]
The 300 dpi RGB bit data D2 output from the controller 103 is next input to the color conversion processing unit 104, and the color conversion processing unit 104 converts the input 300 dpi RGB multivalued bit data to YMCK multivalued data. Is converted into the bit data D3. The YMCK multi-valued bit data D3 is sent to the data compression / expansion processing unit 105, where it is compressed and stored in the memory as one page of YMCK multi-valued bit data. Then, the data compression / decompression processing unit 105 sequentially outputs 300 dpi YMCK multi-valued bit data D4 decompressed in accordance with the process timing of the engine unit 106 from this memory. The multi-valued bit data D4 of YMCK is subjected to a smoothing process or the like in a resolution conversion processing unit 106 in the next stage, converted to multi-valued bit data of 600 dpi, and output to the engine unit 107 as bit data D5. . The bit data D5 is subjected to pulse width modulation according to the data in the engine unit 107, and a laser is driven based on the pulse data to obtain a color image.
[0013]
FIG. 2 is a block diagram showing a conventional example of the data compression / decompression processing unit 105 and the resolution conversion processing unit 106. The data D3 color-converted into YMCK by the color conversion processing unit 104 is subjected to data compression by the compression processing unit 151. In this case, the reference table required is 152, and the data compressed according to the data held in the reference table 152 is stored in the memory 111 composed of a DRAM. Needless to say, the capacity of the memory 111 is smaller than the memory capacity of the size of the bitmap data required for the printing guarantee of the printer.
[0014]
When the compressed data stored in the memory 111 is decompressed, it is processed by the decompression processing unit 153, and is decompressed according to the data held in the reference table 152 in the same manner as the compression processing unit 151. Sent to the unit 106. Upon receiving the bit data D4, the resolution conversion processing unit 106 holds the bit data D4 in the reference window 161, and is input to the pattern matching unit 162 as soon as the target pixel and the bit data in the vicinity thereof are aligned, and performs resolution conversion such as smoothing. After the processing, the image data D5 is output.
[0015]
FIG. 3 is a block diagram showing the data compression / decompression processing unit 105 and the resolution conversion processing unit 106 according to the present invention. 2 includes a reference table 201 in which the functions of the reference table 152 and the reference window 161 are commonly used, and a memory access control unit 202 that controls memory access of the reference table 201 including a single-port SRAM or a dual-port SRAM. The memory capacity of the data compression / decompression processing unit 105 and the resolution conversion processing unit 106 can be managed, thereby reducing the memory capacity.
[0016]
【The invention's effect】
As described above, according to the present invention, the decompression processing means includes decompression processing means for decompressing compressed image data, and smoothing processing means for smoothing image data and outputting smooth characters and images. By providing a data holding circuit control means that can commonly use the data holding circuit used in the above and the data holding circuit used in the smoothing processing, the memory capacity can be reduced, and the cost can be reduced.
