Description
【0001】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a variable optical attenuator for attenuating light intensity, and can be applied to, for example, a waveguide optical component used for optical fiber communication.
[0002]
[Prior art]
With the rapid development of optical communication technology, various optical components have been researched and developed. Among them, a waveguide type optical component based on an optical waveguide on a flat substrate occupies the most important position. This is because the photolithography technique and the microfabrication technique have a feature that a waveguide-type optical component can be mass-produced with a reproducibility with an accuracy of a light wavelength or less.
[0003]
Among various waveguide-type optical components, the variable optical attenuator is used for correcting the variation in signal strength between channels in wavelength division multiplexing communication and for equalizing the gain of an optical fiber amplifier. It is an optical component for which improvement of the optical performance is desired. In particular, for equalizing the gain of an optical fiber amplifier, strict specifications are required such that the variable attenuation is 15 dB or more and the polarization dependence is 0.2 dB or less.
[0004]
Hereinafter, a conventional variable optical attenuator will be described with reference to the drawings. FIG. 8 is a schematic configuration diagram of a conventional variable optical attenuator. As shown in the figure, in the variable optical attenuator 100, a light wave incident from an

FIG. 9 is a characteristic diagram showing an example of an attenuation characteristic when the above-described conventional variable optical attenuator is manufactured using a silica-based optical waveguide. In the figure, the horizontal axis is the applied power (W), and the vertical axis is the attenuation (dB) expressed by the above equation (1). In manufacturing an optical variable attenuator, a general method of manufacturing a silica-based optical waveguide by a flame deposition method and reactive ion etching is used. As shown in the figure, the amount of attenuation is the maximum (that is, the output intensity is minimum) of about 25 dB at an applied voltage of 0.5 W, indicating good characteristics (for example, see

[0010]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, in the conventional variable optical attenuator, as the amount of attenuation increases, the polarization dependence of the input light also increases. For example, the condition under which the maximum amount of attenuation is obtained with respect to the TM polarization (in FIG. 5W), a difference of up to 6 dB occurs between the TM polarization and the TE polarization. This is because the first arm waveguide 103 has different thermo-optic constants for the TM polarization and the TE polarization. This was because the shift amounts were different.
[0011]
Therefore, in the conventional waveguide-type variable optical attenuator, although it operates at low power and the maximum attenuation is sufficiently ensured, and good optical characteristics are realized, there is a problem that polarization dependence is large. I was In particular, in a region where the amount of attenuation is large, the polarization dependence becomes extremely large, and this has been a major obstacle in applying to an actual system.
[0012]
The present invention has been made in view of the above circumstances, and an object of the present invention is to provide an optical variable attenuator in which polarization dependency is eliminated.

[0056]
FIG. 4 is a relationship diagram showing the result of measuring the relationship between the applied power to the thin film heater 16 and the amount of attenuation of the variable optical attenuator according to the present embodiment. As shown in the figure, when a power of 0.23 W was applied to the thin film heater 16, an attenuation of about 18 dB was obtained. Further, at this time, the polarization dependent PDL was as very small as 0.1 dB, and it was found that the characteristics were good, that is, the same attenuation could be obtained for both the TM polarization and the TE polarization.
[0057]
In the conventional optical attenuation method, a change in the refractive index caused by the thermo-optic effect in the interferometer arm has polarization dependency, so that a PDL as an optical variable attenuator has occurred. That is, the reason why the PDL as the optical variable attenuator occurs is that the stress applied to the substrate in the vertical direction and the horizontal direction differs in the interferometer arm. On the other hand, the light attenuation method according to the present embodiment utilizes a change in the refractive index caused by the thermo-optic effect in the free propagation region. Here, since there is no specific waveguide structure in the free propagation region, there is no difference between the stress in the vertical direction and the stress in the horizontal direction. As a result, in this embodiment, the change in the refractive index due to the thermo-optic effect depends on the polarization. Does not occur.
[0058]
From the characteristics described above, the optical variable attenuator according to the present embodiment is sufficiently applicable to gain equalization of an optical fiber amplifier that requires strict specifications of an attenuation of 15 dB or more and a polarization dependence of 0.2 dB or less. It is possible to do.

[0066]
The variable optical attenuator according to the present invention has a refractive index n in the free propagation region. 2 And the refractive index n of the waveguide 1 By changing the ratio, a light attenuation function is exhibited.
[0067]
For example, the refractive index n of the free propagation region 2 And the refractive index n of the waveguide 1 As a means for changing the ratio with respect to, for example, one that modulates the refractive index by changing the temperature (the thin film heater according to the first embodiment, the Peltier according to the second embodiment, etc.), The one that modulates the refractive index, the one that modulates the refractive index by applying a mechanical stress (strain), and the like can be considered.
[0068]
Also, the refractive index n of the free propagation region 2 And the refractive index n of the waveguide 1 As a method of changing the ratio with respect to the refractive index n of the free propagation region, 2 And the refractive index n of the waveguide 1 , The refractive index n of the free propagation region 2 And the refractive index n of the waveguide 1 , The refractive index n of the free propagation region 2 And the refractive index n of the waveguide 1 And a method of changing both.
[0069]
Also, the refractive index n of the free propagation region 2 And the refractive index n of the waveguide 1 In order to change the ratio, it is preferable that the materials forming the respective members have largely different environmental dependencies of the refractive indexes.
[0070]
For example, one of the members is formed of a material whose refractive index changes largely due to environmental changes, and the other is formed of a material whose refractive index hardly changes due to environmental changes. Further, one of the members is formed of a material whose refractive index increases due to an environmental change, and the other is formed of a material whose refractive index decreases due to an environmental change. The environmental dependency of the refractive index means that the refractive index of a material placed under the environment changes due to the above-mentioned temperature change (heating and cooling), electric field change, mechanical strain, and other environmental changes. In the case of a temperature change, it becomes a thermo-optic constant (temperature dependence of refractive index).
[0071]
Further, in the above embodiment, the input optical waveguide and the output optical waveguide are connected to the opposing surfaces of the free propagation region (the left and right sides of the free propagation region in FIGS. 1 and 2), but the present invention is not limited to this. Instead, the input and output optical waveguides may be connected to the same surface of the free propagation region. In this case, a mirror or the like may be provided on a surface to which the input / output optical waveguide is not connected so that a light wave incident from the input optical waveguide is reflected by the mirror and output from the output optical waveguide. Conceivable. Further, when it is desired to attenuate light waves of a plurality of wavelengths with one variable optical attenuator, it can be dealt with by connecting a plurality of input optical waveguides and a plurality of output optical waveguides.
[0072]
【The invention's effect】
The main effect of the present invention is that it is possible to realize an optical variable attenuator that achieves both large attenuation and low polarization dependency.
[0073]
According to the first invention, the refractive index of the free propagation region is changed by the refractive index modulation means, and the propagation direction of the light wave input from the input optical waveguide is changed in the free propagation region, whereby An optical variable attenuator that can change the coupling efficiency of a light wave to a waveguide, change the attenuation rate of a light wave output from an output waveguide, and achieve both large attenuation and low polarization dependence. Can be realized.
[0074]
According to a second aspect, in the variable optical attenuator according to the first aspect, at least one of the input optical waveguide and the output optical waveguide has a mode in which a numerical aperture with the free propagation region is small. With the conversion structure, the spread of the propagating light wave can be suppressed, and an effective light attenuation effect can be obtained.
[0075]
According to the third invention, in the variable optical attenuator according to the first or second invention, when a light wave is input from the input optical waveguide to the free propagation region, the incident angle θ1 (0 ° ≦ θ1) <90 °), the input optical waveguide is connected to the free propagation region so that a variable optical attenuator that more effectively achieves both large attenuation and low polarization dependence is realized. can do.
[0076]
According to a fourth aspect, in the variable optical attenuator according to any one of the first to third aspects, the free propagation region is formed between the input optical waveguide and the output optical waveguide. Groove, and a filler filled in the groove, for example, an input optical waveguide and an output optical waveguide are manufactured on the same substrate, and between the input / output optical waveguide.
