【発明が属する技術分野】
本発明は、カーナビゲーション装置，テレビジョン受像機や携帯電話，ＰＤＡなどのモバイル情報機器などのコンテンツを選択するのに表示画面でメニューを用いる機器でのメニュー表示方法に関する。

【従来の技術】
上記のような機器では、多様化，多機能化を図るために、利用する機能やコンテンツが増加し、膨大化してきている。このような膨大な機能やコンテンツの中からユーザが望むものを探し出すのには、非常な手間と時間とを要することになる。このため、かかる機能やコンテンツをその属性や内容，分野などに応じてグループ化し、かかるグループ化に応じた階層構造をなすメニューを用いて検索する方法が採用されている。

上記文献には、ＴＶ放送番組や各種放送データ，インターネットのホームページの情報などのコンテンツを受信でき、また、これらを記録装置に記録できるようにしたマルチメディア情報機器が記載されており、リモコンの操作により、これらコンテンツの中から利用者が所望のコンテンツを選択して表示させることを可能とするものである。このために、かかるコンテンツは複数のメディア、例えば、ＴＶ，出版，ホームページ，データというブロック毎に大別され、さらに、．各ブロックは複数のジャンルに区分される。例えば、ブロック「ＴＶ」を例にとると、映画，ドラマ，野球，ゴルフなどのジャンルに区分される。さらに、各ジャンルが夫々サブジャンルに区分されている。ジャンル「映像」を例にとると、これは洋画，邦画，アニメなどのサブジャンルに区分されている。

そして、所望のコンテンツを選択して表示させる場合には、リモコンの操作により、表示画面上にこれらブロックと各ブロック毎のジャンルとからなるメニューを表示させ、リモコン操作によってカーソルを所望とするブロックでのジャンルに一致させるものである。ブロックとジャンルとが同時に表示されており、ジャンルを選択すると、このジャンルとこれに属するサブジャンルとこれらサブジャンルに属するコンテンツの名称とが表示される。そして、表示されるコンテンツの名称を選択することにより、このコンテンツが表示されることになる。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
ところで、上記従来技術でのコンテンツを選択するためのメニューは、ブロックを最上位階層，ジャンルをその下位階層とし、さらに、サブジャンルをこのジャンルの下位の最下位階層とする階層構造をなしており、かかる階層構造で表示される。コンテンツはこの最下位層のサブジャンルにしたがって区分されているから、各階層を適切に選択することにより、最終的に検索の対象となるコンテンツの数量が少なくなり、コンテンツの検索がし易いものとなる。

一方、メニューの表示形態は、これまで種々のものが提案されている。しかしながら、実際には、カーナビゲーション装置（以下、カーナビという）やテレビジョン受像機（以下、テレビ受像機），携帯電話，ＰＤＡなどの機器に用いられるコンテンツなどの選択のためのメニューの表示形態は一種類であり、ユーザは、常に、その機器で決められた表示形態のメニューを用いることになる。

このために、ユーザとしては、使用する機器で決められている表示形態のメニューでは、メニューが見にくい，メニュー操作に手間がかかるなどといった理由から、使いづらいといったこともあるし、また、たまには、違った表示形態のメニューを使用してみたいと思うようなことがある。しかし、従来の機器では、このような要望に応えることができなかった。

また、各階層の選択を進めていくうちに、どのような選択経緯を辿ってきたかを知りたくなる場合があるが、そのような経緯を表示するものではなかった。

さらに、リモコンなどの入力デバイスのボタン配列に合わせた選択脚とボタンとの対応が判り易いメニュー表示もなかった。

本発明はかかる要望に鑑みてなされたものであって、その目的は、ユーザが希望する表示形態のメニュー画面を提供することができるようにしたメニュー表示方法を提供することにある。

本発明の他の目的は、階層構造を持つメニュー表示で、選択経緯を表示するメニュー表示方法を提供することにある。

本発明のさらに他の目的は、入力デバイスのボタンなどと表示された選択肢との対応が判り易いメニュー表示方法を提供することにある。

【課題を解決するための手段】
上記目的を達成するためには、本発明は、メニュー画面の異なる表示形態を選択可能とする複数の選択項目を表示し、選択された表示形態でメニュー画面を表示することができるようにしたものである。

また、本発明は、表示画面の横方向にメニューの第１階層の選択項目を配列表示すると同時に、第１階層の選択項目毎に、第１階層の選択項目の下位の第２の階層の選択項目を表示画面の縦方向に、かつ該当する第１階層の選択項目の下方に、配列して表示するものである。

さらに、本発明は、表示画面の横方向にメニューの第１階層の選択項目を配列表示すると同時に、第１階層の選択項目毎に、第１階層の選択項目の下位の第２の階層の選択項目を表示画面の縦方向に、かつ該当する該第１階層の選択項目の下方に、配列して表示し、第２の階層の選択項目の１つが選択されると、選択された第２の階層の下位の第３の階層の選択項目を、第２階層が選択されない他の第１の階層の選択項目の第２の階層の項目に代えて、表示するものである。

さらに、本発明は、表示画面の縦方向にメニューの第１階層の選択項目を配列表示すると同時に、選択された第１階層の選択項目の下位の第２階層の選択項目のみを、表示画面での第１階層の選択項目の横位置に表示するものである。

さらに、本発明は、表示画面上に、選択された上位階層の選択項目とこの上位階層に属する下位階層の選択項目とを同時に表示し、この下位階層の選択項目のいずれかが選択されると、選択された下位階層の選択項目とこの下位階層の選択項目に対する上位階層の選択項目とで表わされる項目の内容を該表示画面の所定のエリアに表示するものである。

【発明の実施の形態】
まず、本発明によるメニュー表示方法を用いた機器について説明する。

図１はかかる機器の一例としてのカーナビを示す図であって、同図（ａ）はカーナビ本体を、同図（ｂ−１），（ｂ−２）はリモコン（リモートコントローラ）を夫々示している。なお、同図（ｂ−２）は同図（ｂ−１）に示すリモコンの蓋を開けた状態を示すものである。また、１はカーナビ本体、２は表示画面、３は受光部、４はディスク挿入口、５はリモコン、６は操作面、７は蓋、８ａはカーナビ本体４の電源キー、８ｂはＶＩＣＳキー、８ｃは決定キー、８ｄは８方向キー、８ｅは戻るキー、８ｆはメニューキー、８ｇはテンキーである。

図１（ａ）において、カーナビ本体１の正面には、表示画面２と、図１（ｂ−１），（ｂ−２）に示すリモコン５からの制御信号の赤外線を受光する受光部３と、アプリケーションプログラム用のディスクを挿入するディスク挿入口４とが設けられており、このリモコン５の操作により、表示画面２に本発明によるメニュー表示方法に基づく表示形態のメニューが表示されることになる。

図１（ｂ−１）において、カーナビのリモコン５では、その操作面６にカーナビ本体１の電源をオン，オフする電源キー８ａやＶＩＣＳキー８ｂ，表示画面２での選択項目の選択決定操作をするための決定キー８ｃ，表示画面２上でカーソル（図示せず）を移動させて選択操作を行なうための８方向キー８ｄ，表示画面２上で表示される画面を１つ前に戻す操作をするための戻るキー８ｅ，表示画面２にメニュー画面を表示させるためのメニューキー８ｆなどのカーナビ操作に必要な各種キーが設けられている。

また、この操作面６の一部には、蓋７が被せられており、このふた７の表面にも、カーナビ操作に必要な各種キーが設けられているが、このふた７を開けると、図１（ｂ−２）に示すように、操作面６の蓋７で被せられた部分にテンキー８ｇが設けられている。

ここで、８方向キー８ｄは、表示画面２での図示しないカーソルが８方向に移動可能のときには、これを縦横斜めの８方向に移動させる機能を有するが、カーソルが縦もしくは横の２方向、または、縦横の４方向にしか移動できない場合には、通常の十字キーと同様の機能を持つことになる。

図２（ｂ）において、テレビ受像機のリモコン１５では、その操作面に受像機本体９の電源をオン，オフする電源キー１６ａやテンキー１６ｂ，表示画面２にメニュー画面を表示させるためのメニューキー１６ｃ，表示画面２上でカーソル（図示せず）を移動させて選択操作を行なうための８方向キー１６ｄ，表示画面１０での項目の選択決定操作をするための決定キー１６ｅ，表示画面１０上で表示される画面を１つ前に戻す操作をするための戻るキー１６ｆ，テレビ受像機９での音量を調整するための音量調整キー１６ｇ，チャンネルを切り替えるためのチャンネル切替キー１６ｈなどのテレビ受像機操作に必要な各種キーが設けられている。８方向キー１６ｄは、カーナビのリモコン５（図１（ｂ））の８方向キ−８ｄと同様の機能を有している。

図３は上記機器のさらに他の例としての携帯電話を示す図であって、１７は携帯電話、１８は表示画面、１９ａは戻るキー、１９ｂはメニューキー、１９ｃは８方向キー、１９ｄは決定キー、１９ｅはテンキーである。

図３において、携帯電話１７の正面には、表示画面１８と操作部とが設けられており、この操作部には、表示画面１８上で表示される画面を１つ前に戻す操作をするための戻るキー１９ａ，表示画面１８にメニュー画面を表示させるためのメニューキー１９ｂ，表示画面２上でカーソル（図示せず）を移動させて選択操作を行なうための８方向キー１９ｃ，表示画面１８での項目の選択決定操作をするための決定キー１９ｄ，テンキー１９ｅなどの携帯電話の操作に必要な各種キーが設けられている。８方向キー１９ｃは、カーナビのリモコン５（図１（ｂ））の８方向キ−８ｄと同様の機能を有している。

次に、本発明の実施形態を図面により説明するが、これを用いる機器をカーナビとする。従って、以下に説明する実施形態によるメニュー画面を表示するのは、図１に示すカーナビ本体１の表示画面２である。但し、カーナビ以外の上記機器に適用する場合には、メニューの選択項目の表示内容がかかる機器に応じたものであって、本質的にカーナビの場合と異なるものではない。

図４〜図８は本発明によるメニュー表示方法の第１の実施形態を示す図であって、２０はメニュー方式選択画面、２１ａ〜２１ｃはメニュー選択項目、２２ａ，２２ｂ，２２ｂ１〜２２ｂ６，２２ｃ，２２ｃ１，２２ｃ２はメニュー画面、２３は第１階層の選択項目、２４は第２階層の選択項目、２５は選択番号、２６は表示エリア、２７は指示項目、２８は第３階層の選択項目である。

まず、図１において、リモコン５の電源キー８ａを操作してカーナビ本体１の電源をオンにし、メニューキー８ｆを操作すると、カーナビ本体１の表示画面２に図４（ａ）に示すメニュー方式選択画面２０が表示され、以下に説明するように、第１の実施形態を利用できるようになる。

このメニュー方式選択画面２０では、「メニュー１」，「メニュー２」，「メニュー３」と表記されるメニュー方式の選択項目２１ａ，２１ｂ，２１ｃが選択可能に表示される。これら「メニュー１」，「メニュー２」，「メニュー３」は異なるメニュー方式を表わすものであるが、メニューは階層構造で表わされるものであって、これらメニュー方式は、同じ内容のメニューを異なる表示形態で表示するものである。なお、ここでは、３種類のメニュー方式があるものとして、３個の選択項目２１ａ〜２１ｃを表示するようにしたが、メニュー方式が２個であっても、また、４個以上であってもよく、いずれも以下の説明と同様である。

かかるメニュー方式選択画面２０においては、デフォルトとして、選択項目２１ａ〜２１ｃのうちのいずれか１つ、ここでは、先頭に配列される選択項目「メニュー１」２１ａがカーソルによって選択されており（これを、以下、フォーカスが当たっているという）、決定キー８ｃを操作すると、図４（ｂ）に示すように、メニュー画面２２ａが第１の表示形態で表示画面２に表示される。以下に説明するメニュー画面では、フォーカスが当てられた選択項目に太枠とハッチングを付し、カーソルが当てられていることを示すようにする。

このメニュー画面２２ａでは、第１の表示形態として、階層構造をなすメニューでの最上位である第１階層の選択項目２３を表示画面２の横方向に配列表示し、これら第１階層の選択項目２３毎に、その下位となる第２階層の選択項目２４を、該当する第１階層の選択項目２３の下に、縦方向に配列して表示するものである。ここで、第１階層の選択項目２３が「行く」，「見る」，「変える」の３種類があるものとすると、これら選択項目「行く」２３，「見る」２３，「変える」２３はメニュー画面２２ａで横方向に配列表示される。そして、第２階層の選択項目２４については、選択項目「行く」２３についてみると、その第２階層の選択項目「よく行くところ」２４，「最近の目的地」２４，「さがす」２４が、その上位である第１階層の選択項目「行く」２３の下に、縦方向に配列されて表示される。他の第１階層の選択項目「見る」２３，「変える」２３についても同様である。

常に、これら第２階層の選択項目２４のいずれか１つにフォーカスが当てられているが、８方向キー８ｄを操作してカーソルを移動させることにより、フォーカスを当てる第２階層の選択項目２４を変更させることができる。また、選択項目「よく行くところ」２４に「１」，選択項目「ランドマーク」２４に「２」，……というように、各第２階層の選択項目２４に順に選択番号２５が付されており、この選択番号２５をテンキー８ｇで指定することにより、この指定された選択番号２５の第２階層の選択項目２４を選択することができる。

図４（ａ）に示すメニュー方式選択画面２０において、この状態で８方向キー８ｄの下方向部を操作（下押し）してカーソルを選択項目「メニュー２」２１ｂに合わせ（即ち、選択項目２１ｂにフォーカスを当てると）、決定キー８ｃを操作すると、図４（ｃ）に示すように、メニュー画面２２ｂが第２の表示形態で表示画面２に表示される。

このメニュー画面２２ｂでは、第２の表示形態として、階層構造をなすメニューでの最上位である第１階層の選択項目２３を表示画面２の縦方向に配列表示する。また、この第２の表示形態のメニュー画面２２ｂでは、第１階層の選択項目２３の１つに必ずフォーカスが当てられており（図示では、選択項目「行く」２３）、そのフォーカスが当てられている第１階層の選択項目２３の下位となる第２階層の選択項目２４が、このフォーカスが当てられている第１階層の選択項目２３の横（ここでは、右側）に、縦方向に配列して表示されるものである。

ここでは、第１階層の選択項目「行く」２３，「見る」２３，「変える」２３がメニュー画面２２ｂの左辺に縦方向に配列表示され、フォーカスが当てられている第１階層の選択項目「行く」２３の下位となる第２階層の選択項目「よく行くところ」２４，「最近の目的地」２４，「さがす」２４が、第１階層の選択項目２３の配列の右側に、縦方向に配列されて表示される。他の第１階層の選択項目「見る」２３，「変える」２３がフォーカスされた場合も、同様である。

また、このメニュー画面２２ｂの上辺部には、表示エリア２６が設けられ、これにフォーカスされた選択項目からなるコンテンツの検索標題が表示される。ここでは、第１階層の選択項目「行く」２３のみがフォーカスされているので、その表記「行く」に基づく選択内容が、例えば、コンテンツの検索標題が「行先を決める」といった文章形態で表示エリア２６に表示される。これにより、どのようにコンテンツを検索するのかが判ることになる。

図４（ａ）に示すメニュー方式選択画面２０において、８方向キー８ｄの下方向部を２度操作（下押し）し、カーソルを下方に移動させて選択項目「メニュー３」２１ｃにフォーカスを当て、決定キー８ｃを操作すると、図４（ｄ）に示すように、メニュー画面２２ｃが第３の表示形態で表示画面２に表示される。

このメニュー画面２２ｂでは、第３の表示形態として、階層構造をなすメニューでの最上位である第１階層の選択項目２３が表示画面２の上下方向の中央部で横方向に配列表示される。但し、フォーカスが当てられている第１階層の選択項目２３のみが表示画面２の中央部に表示され、それ以外の第１階層の選択項目２３は表示画面２からはみ出している。

ここでは、「道案内」，「渋滞情報」，「各種設定」の３つの第１階層の選択項目２３があるものとして、「道案内」の右側に「各種設定」が、また、左側に「渋滞情報」が夫々配列されているものとし、「道案内」にフォーカスが当てられているものとする。従って、この第１階層の選択項目「道案内」２３が表示画面２の中央部に表示される。

また、この第３の表示形態のメニュー画面２２ｃでは、第１階層の選択項目２３の下位となる第２階層の選択項目２４が、この第１階層の選択項目２３の上下方向，右斜め上方向，右斜め下方向，左斜め下方向，左斜め上方向の６方向に配置表示される。即ち、第１階層の選択項目２３を中心として、８方向等距離（即ち、同心円上）に指示項目２７と第２階層の選択項目２４とが配列表示されることになり、これらをフォーカスするのに、８方向キー８ｄにカーソルを８方向に移動させる機能を持たせる。これにより、例えば、この８方向キー８ｄの右上斜め方向を指示する部分を操作すると、第２階層の選択項目「場所を捜す」２４がフォーカスされ、８方向キー８ｄの左方向を指示する部分を操作すると、指示項目「渋滞情報」２７がフォーカスされて第１階層の選択項目「渋滞情報」２３が選択されることになる。

いま、図５（ａ）に示すように、メニュー画面２２ａが第１階層の選択項目「行く」２３に属する第２階層の選択項目「よく行くところ」２４がフォーカスされた状態にあるものとする。かかる状態で８方向キー８ｄの下方向指示部を操作（下押し）したものとすると、図５（ｂ）に示すように、フォーカスが１つ下方に移動し、同じ第１階層の選択項目「行く」２３に属する次の第２階層の選択項目「最近の目的地」２４にフォーカスが当てられることになる。

また、図５（ａ）に示す状態のメニュー画面２２ａで８方向キー８ｄの右方向指示部を操作（右押し）すると、図５（ｃ）に示すように、フォーカスが１つ右方に移動し、右側に配列される第１階層の選択項目「見る」２３に属する第２階層の選択項目「ランドマーク」２４にフォーカスが当てられることになる。この第１階層の選択項目「見る」２３に属する第２階層の他の選択項目、例えば、選択項目「案内情報」２４を選択するためには、さらに、８方向キー８ｄの下方向指示部を操作（下押し）すればよい。また、さらに右側に配列される第１階層の選択項目「変える」２３に属する第２階層の選択項目を選択するためには、さらに８方向キー８ｄの右方向指示部を操作（右押し）すればよい。
