【0001】
線順次駆動法には、非選択行の走査電極の電位を一定にするAPT(Alto Pleshko Technique)や、一定周期で非選択行の走査電極の電位を変化させるIAPT(Improved APT)等がある。

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a method for driving a liquid crystal display device, and more particularly to a method for driving a liquid crystal display device that reduces power consumption.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Liquid crystal display devices are widely used as display devices for man-machine interfaces. For example, taking advantage of the feature that a lightweight and thin display device can be realized, it is widely used as a display device such as a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) or a mobile phone.
[0003]
As a driving method of a liquid crystal display device in which liquid crystal is sandwiched between a plurality of scanning electrodes and a plurality of signal electrodes arranged to be orthogonal to the scanning electrodes, the scanning electrodes are selected by selecting the scanning electrodes one by one. There is a line sequential driving method in which a predetermined voltage is applied. The line-sequential driving method includes APT (Alto Plesko Technique) that makes the potential of the scanning electrode of the non-selected row constant, IAPT (Improved APT) that changes the potential of the scanning electrode of the non-selected row at a constant cycle, and the like. In addition to the line sequential driving method, there is also a multiple line simultaneous selection method (multiline addressing method: MLA method) for simultaneously selecting a plurality of scanning electrodes.
[0004]
FIG. 16 shows a driving waveform when the liquid crystal display device is driven by APT. FIGS. 16A to 16C show changes in the potentials of the scan electrodes in the (L−1) th row, the Lth row, and the (L + 1) th row, respectively. FIG. 16D shows an example of a change in potential of one signal electrode. In APT, each scan electrode is sequentially selected as time T elapses. For the selected scan electrode, a predetermined voltage V r1 Power supply circuit (hereinafter referred to as V r1 This is referred to as a power supply circuit. ) To supply the electric charge and the potential to V r1 Set to. V for other scan electrodes r1 A predetermined voltage V different from M Power supply circuit (hereinafter referred to as V M This is referred to as a power supply circuit. ) To supply the electric charge and the potential to V M Set to.
[0005]
Each signal electrode is set to a potential corresponding to the display data of the pixel in the selected row. The potential of the signal electrode where the pixel to be lit is V c1 And the pixel has V r1 -V c1 Is applied. The potential of the signal electrode where there is no pixel to be lit is V c2 And the pixel has V r1 -V c2 Is applied. As a result, a desired image is displayed on the selected row. However, the potential V c1 , V c2 Is (V c1 + V c2 ) / 2 = V M And V c1 <V M <V c2 <V r1 To be satisfied.
[0006]
In addition, the height relationship between the potential of the selected scan electrode and the potential of the signal electrode is often reversed at regular intervals. Driving so that the potential of the selected scanning electrode is higher than the potential of the signal electrode is called positive polarity driving. Driving the selected scan electrode so that the potential of the selected scan electrode is lower than the potential of the signal electrode is called negative polarity drive. When switching from positive polarity drive to negative polarity drive, the voltage V r2 Power supply circuit (hereinafter referred to as V r2 This is referred to as a power supply circuit. ) To supply the electric charge and the potential to V r2 Set to. However, the potential V r1 , V r2 Is (V r1 + V r2 ) / 2 = V M It is determined that For example, V r2 = -V r1 , V M = 0V.
[0007]
In the case of negative polarity driving, the potential of the signal electrode where the pixel to be lit is V is V c2 And the pixel has V r2 -V c2 Is applied. The potential of the signal electrode where there is no pixel to be lit is V c1 And the pixel has V r2 -V c1 Is applied.
[0008]
Period T shown in FIG. s Indicates the selection period of each scan electrode. In the case of positive polarity, in the selection period of the (L-1) th row, the potential of the scan electrode of the (L-1) th row is set to V r1 And the potential of the other scan electrode is set to V M Set to. In addition, each scanning electrode forms a capacitor together with each opposing signal electrode. The capacitance of the capacitor formed by one scanning electrode and each signal electrode is defined as C r Then, in the selection period of the (L-1) th row, V is applied to the liquid crystal layer between the scanning electrode of the (L-1) th row and each signal electrode. r1 ・ C r Is stored. This amount of charge can vary depending on the potential setting of each signal electrode. Here, the potential V c1 Number of signal electrodes and potential V c2 The number of signal electrodes is the same, and the average potential of each signal electrode is V M The description will be made assuming that it is (0V). When the selection period of the (L-1) th row ends and the selection period of the (L-1) th row starts, the scan electrode of the (L-1) th row becomes V V M The potential is V by the power supply circuit. M Set to At this time, the liquid crystal layer between the scanning electrode in the (L-1) th row and each signal electrode is V M (V r1 -V M ) ・ C r Discharge the charge. On the other hand, the liquid crystal layer between the scanning electrode of the Lth row and each signal electrode is V r1 The electric charge charged and accumulated by the power supply circuit is (V r1 -V M ) ・ C r Only increase. The potential of the scan electrode in the Lth row is V M To V r1 To change. The same applies to the change in charge when the selected row is switched from the Lth row to the (L + 1) th row. Thus, the potential of the selected scan electrode is changed to V while selecting each scan electrode. r1 And the potential of the other scan electrode is V M Go on. Here, positive polarity driving has been described as an example, but the same applies to negative polarity driving.
[0009]
In IAPT, the potential of the scan electrode in the non-selected row is changed between positive polarity driving and negative polarity driving. In MLA, a plurality of scan electrodes are selected simultaneously, and the potentials of the selected scan electrodes are set to predetermined potentials. For example, four scan electrodes are selected simultaneously, and the potential of each scan electrode is set. Subsequently, another four scanning electrodes are simultaneously selected and their respective potentials are set.
[0010]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
In the conventional APT as shown in FIG. 16, when the selected row is switched, the liquid crystal layer between each scan electrode and the scan electrode selected so far is (V r1 -V M ) ・ C r The charge of V M Discharge to the power circuit. No charge discharged from the scan electrode is used. The same applies to IAPT and MLA.
[0011]
Therefore, an object of the present invention is to provide a driving method of a liquid crystal display device that can reduce the power consumption by effectively utilizing the charges accumulated in the scan electrodes.

As shown in FIG. 9, it is also possible to connect a capacitor to the SHARE terminal side. In this case, the scan electrodes are short-circuited, and at the same time, each scan electrode to be short-circuited is also short-circuited to the SHARE capacitor.

[Embodiment 5] Next, a fifth embodiment will be described. FIG. 10 is a block diagram illustrating an example of a driving device of a liquid crystal display device to which the driving method of the fifth embodiment is applied. In the fifth embodiment, MLA is adopted. The

In addition, the liquid crystal layer between each scanning electrode and each signal electrode selected previously has a charge (V r ・ C r / 2 or -V r ・ C r / 2) is discharged from the accumulated state. The potential of the scan electrode is V M become.
[0119]
Thereafter, each scan electrode is selected while switching the subgroup in the same manner. As in the other embodiments, the period during which SHARE is set to the high level is set to ½ or more of the time constant of at least one scan electrode. Time T 1 Is determined by subtracting the period during which SHARE is set to the high level from the selection period.
[0120]
According to the driving method shown in the fifth embodiment, at the end of the selection period, the scan electrodes of the selected subgroup and the next selected subgroup are short-circuited, and the charge of the selected subgroup is reduced. A portion is supplied to the next selected subgroup. Accordingly, at the time of subgroup switching, the amount of discharge from the scan electrode selected so far and the amount of charge to the scan electrode to be selected next can be reduced. As a result, power consumption when driving the liquid crystal display device can be reduced.
[0121]
In the fifth embodiment, the potential of the shorted scan electrode is V r It does not always become / 2. For example, assume that the first column of the selection matrix shown in FIG. 11 is applied during positive polarity driving. At this time, the potentials of the four scanning electrodes selected at the same time are all V. r become. In the next selection period when the second column is applied, the potential is V r There are two scan electrodes to be formed. Therefore, when these 6 are short-circuited, the potential of each scanning electrode is 2 · V. r / 3.
[0122]
[Sixth Embodiment] Next, a sixth embodiment will be described. The sixth embodiment employs MLA as in the fifth embodiment. The driving device of the liquid crystal display device to which the driving method of the sixth embodiment is applied is the same as that of the fifth embodiment. However, the

According to the driving method shown in the sixth embodiment, the power consumption when driving the liquid crystal display device can be reduced, as in the fifth embodiment.
[0129]
As shown in FIG. 5, a capacitor can be connected to the SHARE terminal side. In this case, the scan electrodes are short-circuited, and at the same time, each scan electrode to be short-circuited is also short-circuited to the SHARE capacitor.
[0130]
In the first to sixth embodiments, the case where the scan electrodes are short-circuited at the end of the selection period has been described, but the period in which the scan electrodes are short-circuited may be provided at the beginning of the selection period. Further, it may be provided at the beginning and the end of the selection period. FIG. 12 shows the selection period T as the period for short-circuiting. s The signal output timing when it is provided at the beginning is shown. Here, the case where APT is employed has been described as an example, but IAPT or MLA may be employed. When the MLA is employed, the scan electrode of the subgroup to be selected and the scan electrode of the subgroup selected in the immediately preceding selection period are short-circuited. At this time, the potential is V r The scan electrode to be set to (first predetermined potential) and the potential V in the immediately preceding selection period r The scan electrode set to 1 is short-circuited. FIG. 13 shows signal output timing when the period for short-circuiting the scan electrodes is provided at the beginning and end of the selection period. [0138]
Here, the case where APT is employed has been described as an example, but IAPT or MLA may be employed. When the MLA is employed, the scan electrode driver short-circuits the scan electrode of the selected subgroup and the scan electrode of the next selected subgroup when SHARE becomes high level at the end of the selection period. At this time, the potential is V r The scan electrode set to (first predetermined potential) and the potential V in the next selection period r The scanning electrode to be set to be short-circuited. In addition, the potential is -V r The scan electrode is set to (second predetermined potential) and the potential is -V in the next selection period. r The scanning electrode to be set to be short-circuited. When CL is output and a new selection period starts, the scan electrode driver short-circuits the scan electrode of the subgroup to be selected and the scan electrode of the subgroup selected in the immediately preceding selection period. At this time, the potential is V r The potential of the scan electrode to be set to V and the potential in the immediately preceding selection period r The scan electrode set to 1 is short-circuited. In addition, the potential is -V r The potential of the scan electrode to be set to -V and the potential in the immediately preceding selection period -V r The scan electrode set to 1 is short-circuited.
[0139]
Even when the period for short-circuiting the scan electrode is provided at the beginning of the selection period or when the scan electrode is provided at the beginning and end of the selection period, the scan electrode can be short-circuited to supply charges to the scan electrode with a low potential. it can. Accordingly, power consumption can be reduced as in the case where the period for short-circuiting the scan electrodes is provided at the end of the selection period.
[0140]
However, the period for short-circuiting the scan electrodes is preferably provided at the end of the selection period. The reason for this will be described below. FIG. 14 shows the selection period T s An example of a drive waveform when the scan electrode is short-circuited at the beginning of FIG. It takes a little time to change the potential (rising of the potential, etc.). Therefore, as shown in FIG. 14, the selection period T s First, it takes time until the potential of the selected row rises, and it also takes time until the potential of the row selected in the previous selection period decreases. As a result, the display of the selected line appears slightly on the line selected immediately before. Such a phenomenon is called ghost and is also found in a general liquid crystal display device. However, in the drive waveform as shown in FIG. s At the beginning, a ghost appears strongly because the selected row and the selected row of the previous selection period are short-circuited.
[0141]
On the other hand, the period during which the scan electrodes are short-circuited is the selection period T. s It is assumed that it is provided at the end of In this case, the selection period T s At the start of the scanning, the scanning electrodes of the selected row are charged from a state where electric charges are accumulated by a short circuit. In addition, the scan electrode selected immediately before is discharged from a state in which charges are accumulated by a short circuit. Therefore, the occurrence of ghost at the start of the selection period is less than in the case shown in FIG. On the other hand, the selection period T s Finally, the display of the selected row appears slightly in the next selected row by shorting the scan electrode and raising the potential of the next selected scan electrode. However, the display of the selected line does not affect the line selected immediately before. The influence of the display of the selected line appears in a distributed manner before and after the selected line at the start of the selection period and at the end of the selection period. Therefore, better display quality than the case shown in FIG. 14 can be obtained. Therefore, the period during which the scan electrodes are short-circuited is the selection period T s It is preferable to provide at the end.
[0142]
When the period for short-circuiting the scan electrodes (the period for setting SHARE to high level) is set longer than the time constant of the scan electrodes, the scan electrodes are set at the beginning and end of the selection period as shown in FIG. It is preferable to short-circuit.
[0143]
Next, stabilization of the potential when the scan electrodes are short-circuited will be described. As described in the fifth embodiment, in the fifth embodiment, the potential of the scan electrodes when the scan electrodes are short-circuited is not always constant. The potential when the scan electrodes are short-circuited can be kept substantially constant by connecting a capacitor to the wiring used for the short-circuit. FIG. 15 shows an example of a scan electrode driver provided with a capacitor. The scan electrode driver shown in FIG. 15 is the same as the configuration shown in FIG. 3 except that
[0144]
Not only in the fifth embodiment, but also in the first embodiment and the third embodiment, a capacitor may be connected to the wiring used for the short circuit. In the first embodiment, if the
[0145]
In the second, fourth, and sixth embodiments, a capacitor may be connected to the SHARE terminal. In the second, fourth, and sixth embodiments, as shown in FIGS. 5 and 9, if a capacitor is connected to the SHARE terminal, the discharge amount and the charge amount can be obtained even at the timing of switching between the positive polarity drive and the negative polarity drive. Can be reduced.
[0146]
【The invention's effect】
