Abstract
Description
【0001】
【0045】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a transmissive liquid crystal display device and a light source device and a member suitable for the transmissive liquid crystal display device. More specifically, the present invention relates to a laminated polarizing film for the purpose of enhancing the brightness enhancement effect of a reflective polarizing film, and a high-brightness polarized light source device and a liquid crystal display device using the same.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Liquid crystal display devices are used in various fields because of their small size and light weight. The liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal display device are not luminescent substances used in cathode ray tubes (CRT) and the like, but merely function as light valves for controlling the polarization state of light. The part is dark and invisible. Therefore, a transmission type liquid crystal display device in which a light source device is disposed on the back of the liquid crystal display unit is provided.
[0003]
A conventional transmission type liquid crystal display device will be described with reference to FIG. The liquid crystal display device generally controls the polarization state of light passing therethrough by electrically changing the alignment state of liquid crystal molecules sealed in the
[0004]
On the front surface of the
[0005]
In recent years, a brightness enhancement system in which a reflective polarizing film is inserted between a rear-side absorption polarizing film and a light source device has been adopted. For example, as described in Japanese Patent Application Publication No. 9-511844, this brightness enhancement system converts a polarized light component, which is absorbed by the back-side absorption polarizing film, out of the light emitted from the light source device into a reflection type light. By returning the light to the light source device in advance by interposing a polarizing film, the light can be reused, and the amount of light that can be used is increased, thereby improving the brightness of the display device.
[0006]
In this brightness enhancement system, how efficiently the polarized component returned to the light source device by the reflective polarizing film can be converted into the polarized component transmitted through the rear-side absorbing polarizing film is important for increasing the brightness enhancement rate. It is. As a method of increasing the luminance improvement rate, for example, as proposed in JP-A-2001-147321, a reflective linear polarizing film and a retardation film are arranged such that their optical axes cross each other at 45 ° or 135 °. There is a method of using a quarter-wave retardation film as the retardation film. According to this method, since the brightness enhancement system uses the circularly polarized light, the polarization conversion functions effectively and the brightness enhancement effect can be enhanced.
[0007]
In order to effectively utilize this concept, it is preferable that the circularly polarizing property functions over the entire visible light range. However, a retardation film formed by stretching a normal polycarbonate resin has the property of increasing the retardation for short wavelengths. Therefore, a single retardation film has a circular polarization property over the entire visible light range. Was not satisfied, and thus the effect of improving the luminance by the circularly polarized light was not sufficiently obtained.
[0008]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
Therefore, the present invention provides a brightness enhancement system using circularly polarized light, which enhances the polarization conversion efficiency by securing circularly polarized light at a required wavelength in the visible light region, thereby increasing the brightness improvement rate by the reflective polarizing film. With the goal.
[0009]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
The present inventors have found that, by specifying the wavelength dispersibility of the retardation film, the effect of improving luminance using circularly polarized light can be further increased, and the luminance improvement rate increases.
[0010]
That is, according to the present invention, there is provided a laminated polarizing film formed by laminating a reflective linearly polarizing film and at least one low wavelength dispersion retardation film or reverse wavelength dispersion retardation film.
[0011]
The low wavelength dispersion retardation film or reverse wavelength dispersion retardation film used here preferably has a quarter wavelength retardation. Then, it is preferable that the optical axis of the quarter-wave retardation film and the polarization transmission axis of the reflective linearly polarizing film are laminated so as to intersect at an angle of about 45 °.
[0012]
In addition, in addition to the reflective linearly polarizing film and the low wavelength dispersion or reverse wavelength dispersion retardation film, an absorption linear polarization film is used, and the absorption linear polarization film / reflection linear polarization film / low wavelength dispersion retardation film or There is also provided a laminated polarizing film laminated in the order of the inverse wavelength dispersion retardation film.
[0013]
At least one light diffusion layer having an in-plane retardation value of 30 nm or less can be further laminated at any position on these laminated polarizing films in order to impart light diffusion. This light diffusion layer may have adhesiveness. In order to facilitate handling of the laminated polarizing film of the present invention and to avoid unnecessary interfacial reflection, it is preferable that at least one pair of adjacent films or layers is tightly laminated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive.
[0014]
According to the present invention, there is provided a polarized light source device comprising any one of the above laminated polarizing films, a light source member and a reflector, and the light source member and the reflector are arranged in this order on the retardation film side of the laminated polarizing film. Provided.
[0015]
Furthermore, according to the present invention, the polarized light source device, a liquid crystal cell and a front side absorption type polarizing film are provided, and the liquid crystal cell and the front side absorption type polarizing film are arranged on the laminated polarizing film side of the polarized light source device in this order. Liquid crystal display device is also provided. Here, a light scattering layer may be laminated between the liquid crystal cell and the front side absorption type polarizing film. Further, it is preferable that at least one pair of adjacent members from the laminated polarizing film to the front-side absorption polarizing film is closely laminated by a pressure-sensitive adhesive.

BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
In order to clarify the present invention, a detailed description will be given below with reference to drawings showing specific examples. The laminated

[0018]
Examples of the reflective linearly polarizing film include a reflective linearly polarizing film (for example, a film described in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 6-508449) utilizing a difference in the reflectance of a polarized light component depending on the Brewster angle, and a fine metal wire. A reflective linear polarizing film (for example, described in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 2-308106) on which a pattern is formed and at least two types of polymer films are laminated, and the anisotropy of the reflectance due to the refractive index anisotropy is provided. A reflective linearly polarizing film (for example, one described in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 9-506837) utilizing a property, having a sea-island structure formed of at least two kinds of polymers in a polymer film, and having a different refractive index. Particles in a reflective linearly polarizing film utilizing anisotropy of reflectivity due to anisotropy (for example, those described in US Pat. No. 5,825,543) and a polymer film are used. Inorganic particles are dispersed in a reflective linearly polarizing film (for example, disclosed in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 11-509014) utilizing the anisotropy of the reflectance due to the refractive index anisotropy, or the polymer film. And a reflective linearly polarizing film utilizing the anisotropy of the reflectance based on the scattering power difference depending on the particle size (for example, one described in JP-A-9-297204).
[0019]
The thickness of the reflective linearly polarizing film is not particularly limited, but is preferably thinner from the viewpoint of reducing the thickness of the liquid crystal display device. Specifically, it is preferably 1 mm or less, more preferably 0.2 mm or less. Therefore, in order to reduce the thickness, at least two types of polymer films are laminated, and a reflective linearly polarizing film utilizing anisotropy of reflectance due to refractive index anisotropy, or at least two types of polymer films in a polymer film. A reflective linearly polarizing film having a sea-island structure composed of a polymer and utilizing anisotropy of reflectance due to refractive index anisotropy is particularly preferable.

The inverse wavelength
[0022]
In the present invention, these low wavelength dispersion or reverse wavelength dispersion retardation films are laminated with a reflective linearly polarizing film to form a laminated polarizing film. The retardation film is preferably a 波長 wavelength retardation film. It is good also as a quarter wavelength retardation film using two or more retardation films.
[0023]
As shown in a schematic diagram in FIG. 2, the direction of the axis is such that the
[0024]
The retardation film used in the present invention may have biaxiality. Biaxiality means that the maximum refractive index direction in the plane of the retardation film is the x-axis direction, the axis in the plane orthogonal to the x-axis direction is the y-axis direction, and the thickness direction is the z-axis direction. n x , N y And n z Then, n y ≠ n z It is what becomes. Nz coefficient used to express the orientation state = (n x -N z ) / (N x -N y ), The orientation state with Nz coefficient ≠ 1 is called biaxial.
[0025]
In the present invention, an absorption type linear polarizing film may be further laminated to form a laminated polarizing film. When an absorption type linearly polarizing film is used, the absorption type linearly polarizing film / reflection type linearly polarizing film / at least one low wavelength dispersion or reverse wavelength dispersion retardation film is laminated in this order. FIG. 3 shows a state in which an absorption type linear

[0027]
The absorption type linearly polarizing film transmits linearly polarized light in a specific vibration direction and absorbs linearly polarized light in a direction orthogonal thereto. The polarization transmission axis of an absorption type linear polarizing film refers to a direction in which the transmittance becomes maximum when linear polarized light in a specific vibration direction is incident from the vertical direction of the polarizing film. The direction orthogonal to this becomes the polarization absorption axis.
[0028]
As such an absorption-type linear polarizing film, for example, a known iodine-based polarizing film or dye-based polarizing film can be used. The iodine-based polarizing film is a film in which iodine is adsorbed on a stretched polyvinyl alcohol film, and the dye-based polarizing film is a film in which a dichroic dye is adsorbed on a stretched polyvinyl alcohol film. These polarizing films are preferably coated on one or both sides with a polymer film in order to improve durability. As the material of the polymer to be coated for protection, cellulose diacetate, cellulose triacetate, polyethylene terephthalate, norbornene-based resin and the like can be used.
[0029]
The thickness of the absorbing linearly polarizing film is not particularly limited, but when the laminated polarizing film of the present invention is used for a liquid crystal display device or the like, it is preferable that the absorbing linearly polarizing film is also thin. Specifically, it is preferably 1 mm or less, more preferably 0.2 mm or less.
[0030]
In the present invention, since the main purpose is to optimize the brightness enhancement system generated between the reflective linear polarizing film and the light source device, a diffusion sheet generally used for the light source device may not be preferably used. . For this purpose, it is preferable to incorporate a light diffusion layer having an in-plane retardation value of 30 nm or less into the laminated polarizing film. The place where the light diffusion layer is laminated is not particularly limited. An example of this case is shown in FIGS. FIG. 5A shows a layer structure of the absorption linear

In order to facilitate the handling of the laminated polarizing film according to the present invention, it is preferable to adhere the constituent films and layers with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. The close contact can prevent light loss due to unnecessary reflection. Various known pressure-sensitive adhesives can be used. For example, acrylate-based pressure-sensitive adhesives, rubber-based pressure-sensitive adhesives, silicone-based pressure-sensitive adhesives, urethane-based pressure-sensitive adhesives, and the like can be given. Among them, acrylate-based pressure-sensitive adhesives are preferably used. The thickness of the pressure-sensitive adhesive is not particularly limited, but is usually 1 μm or more and 100 μm or less, preferably 20 μm or more, and more preferably 50 μm or less.
[0034]
A retardation film for performing optical compensation can be further laminated on the laminated polarizing film of the present invention. Examples of suitable retardation films include polycarbonate-based resins, polyarylate-based resins, polysulfone-based resins, synthetic polymers such as norbornene-based resins, and films made of natural polymers such as cellulose diacetate and cellulose triacetate. A film obtained by applying a compound having an optical anisotropy or a liquid crystal composition on a transparent polymer film (for example, “WV film” sold by Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd.) "NH film" and "LC film" sold by Nippon Petrochemical Co., Ltd., and "VAC film" sold by Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd .; each of which is a trade name). When the purpose is optical compensation of the liquid crystal cell, a retardation film is disposed on the liquid crystal cell side of the laminated polarizing film. It is desirable that these members be closely laminated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive in order to prevent light loss due to the interposition of the air layer.
[0035]
The laminated polarizing film according to the present invention is a polarized light source device having the reflective linearly polarizing film side, or, when an absorption linearly polarizing film is further laminated, the absorption linearly polarizing film side as an emission light surface. Can be. In addition, a liquid crystal cell for display may be arranged on the emission light surface of the polarized light source device to provide a transmission type liquid crystal display device. The polarized light source device and the transmission type liquid crystal display device will be described based on an example shown in a schematic cross-sectional view in FIG.

Is an optical element of 10% or more. Here, the total light transmittance of the diffusion sheet is preferably as high as possible, and more preferably a material showing a total light transmittance of 80% or more. Such a diffusion sheet is not particularly limited, and for example, a plastic sheet or a glass sheet obtained by roughening a plastic sheet or a glass sheet, or a plastic sheet or a glass sheet in which cavities are formed or particles are added. Can be used. The material of the plastic sheet referred to herein is not particularly limited, but examples include polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene naphthalate, polycarbonate, norbornene-based resin, polyurethane, polyacrylate, and polymethyl methacrylate.
