【発明の詳細な説明】

【発明の属する技術分野】本発明は、スーパーマーケッ
ト及び他の小売店内のチェック・システムに関し、特に
バーコードリーダ及び無線周波数ＩＤ確認装置を含むア
イテム処理装置に関する。
【０００２】
【従来の技術】チェック・システムは、通常、バーコー
ドリーダを含む。今日、ほとんどすべての製品には、上
記製品のメーカー又は小売業者によりバーコードが表示
されている。
【０００３】バーコードリーダは、種々の目的に従って
種々のタイプのものがある。最も普通に使用されるスキ
ャナは、レーザ及び走査パターンを生成するためのミラ
ーを含む光学式バーコードリーダである。あるスキャナ
は、チェック・カウンタ内に装着されていて、一方、他
のスキャナとしては、持ち運ぶことができる手のひらサ

号が、ＲＦＩＤ技術のいくつかの使用方法を開示してい
る。

【課題を解決するための手段】オペレータが、バーコー
ドリーダが位置する１つの領域でのアイテムの入力に集
中し続けるためには、バーコードリーダとＲＦＩＤ確認
装置とを一体化して１つの処理用周辺装置にすることが
望ましい。

ドリーダと、バーコードリーダに接続している無線周波
数製品ラベル確認装置とを備えるアイテム処理装置を提
供する。

ドラベルから第１の識別情報を入手するための制御回路
と、無線周波数製品ラベルから第２の識別情報を入手す
るために、制御回路に接続している通信ポートとを含む
バーコードリーダと、通信ポートに第２の識別情報を提
供するための無線周波数確認装置とを備えるアイテム・
チェック装置を提供する。
【０００８】第３の態様によれば、本発明は、第２の識
別情報を入手するために、アイテムと無線周波数識別製
品ラベル確認装置から第１の識別情報を入手するための
バーコードリーダを含むアイテム処理装置を作動するス
テップと、アイテムがバーコードラベルを持っている場
合に、バーコードリーダにより第１の識別情報を入手す
るステップと、アイテムが無線周波数製品ラベルを持っ
ている場合に、無線周波数製品ラベル確認装置により第
２の識別情報を入手するステップとを含むアイテム処理
方法を提供する。

ザクション・システムの主要構成部品は、チェック・カ
ウンタ１２とトランザクション・サーバ１６である。

リーダ２６、及びラベルリーダ３０を含む。
【００１２】端末装置１８は、チェック・カウンタ１２
の動作を制御し、トランザクション・ソフトウェア４６
を実行する。
【００１３】入力装置２０は、顧客の選択したアイテム
を記録する。入力装置２０としては、タッチスクリーン
又はキーボードを使用することができる。
【００１４】表示器２２は、トランザクションを通して
顧客を助けるために、プログラム命令を表示する。表示
器２２としては、液晶表示器を使用することができる
が、表示器は入力装置２０と組み合わせてタッチスクリ
ーンとすることもできる。

ザクション情報を印刷する。
【００１６】カードリーダ２６は、顧客の支払い及び識
別カードから情報を読み取る。カードリーダ２６は、磁
気ストリップリーダ又はスマート・カードリーダ、又は
両者の組合わせを含むことができる。
【００１７】アイテム・チェック装置３０は、ＲＦＩＤ
ラベル１４及びバーコードラベル２８を読み取る。アイ
テム・チェック装置３０は、ＲＦＩＤラベルリーダ３
２、秤３４及びバーコードリーダ４６を含む。
【００１８】ＲＦＩＤラベルリーダ３２は、ＲＦＩＤラ
ベル１４に記憶している識別情報を読み取る。
【００１９】バーコードリーダ４６は、バーコードラベ
ル２８を読み取る。
【００２０】秤３４は、農産物アイテム及び他の重量が
一様でないアイテム、又はバルクアイテムの重量情報を
提供する。
【００２１】ＲＦＩＤラベル１４は、識別ラベルであ
る。ＲＦＩＤラベル１４の大きさは、製品の大きさによ
り種々に変えることができ、製品に取り付ける場合に、
目で見ることができるようにすることもできるし、目で
見えないようにすることもできる。ＲＦＩＤラベル１４
は、製品に取り外すことができるように取り付けること
もできるし、取り外すことができないように永久に取り
付けることもできる。
【００２２】１つの実施形態の場合には、ＲＦＩＤラベ
ル１４は、ラベル連絡機構３８、ＲＦＩＤメモリ、及び
バッテリー４２を含む。
【００２３】ラベル連絡機構３８は、ＲＦＩＤメモリ４
０に記憶しているアイテム識別情報をラベルリーダ３２
に送る。ラベル連絡機構３８は、ＲＦトランシーバを含
むことができる。
【００２４】メモリ４０は、アイテム識別情報を記憶
し、１回だけ使用するための読取専用メモリ（ＲＯ
Ｍ）、又は反復使用するためのプログラマブルＲＯＭ
（ＥＰＲＯＭ）を含むことができる。
【００２５】バッテリー４２は、ラベル連絡機構３８に
電力を供給する。
【００２６】他の実施形態の場合には、ＲＦＩＤラベル
１４は、受動ラベルであってもよい。受動ＲＦＩＤラベ
ルは、非常に少しのエネルギーしか消費しないので、ラ
ベル連絡機構３８しか内蔵できない。電力は無線周波数
から受け取ることもできる。
【００２７】ラベル連絡機構３８は、ＲＦＩＤラベル１

置１８からアイテム識別情報を受信し、価格参照データ
ファイル４４から価格情報を返送する。端末装置１８
は、アイテム・チェック装置３０からアイテム識別情報
を入手する。

テム・チェック装置３０の詳細図である。
【００３０】ＲＦＩＤラベルリーダ３２は、好適には、
バーコードリーダ４６のハウジング４８内に設置するの
が好ましいが、ハウジング４８の外側に設置することも
できる。ＲＦＩＤラベルリーダ３２は、ラベル確認装置
６４、アンテナ６６及び制御回路６８を含む。
【００３１】ラベル確認装置６４は、識別情報を入手す
るために、ＲＦＩＤラベル１４に対して問合わせを行
う。ラベル確認装置６４は、ＲＦトランシーバを含むこ
とができる。ラベル確認装置６４は、アンテナ６６を使
用する。
【００３２】制御回路６８は、ＲＦＩＤラベルリーダ３
２の動作を制御し、バーコードリーダ４６により端末装
置１８に識別情報を提供する。制御回路６８は、あるア
イテムの存在を検出するために、共通利用回路を含むこ
とができる。制御回路６０は、また、レーザ５０のよう
なある構成部品を起動することができる。
【００３３】制御回路６８は、直列ポート６２を通して
制御回路６０に識別情報を提供するが、また、直列ポー
ト６２又は制御回路６０を通さないで、端末装置１８
に、直接識別情報を提供することもできる。
【００３４】バーコードリーダ４６のある例の主要構成
部品は、レーザ５０、光学式トランシーバ５２、多角形
スピナー５４、パターン・ミラー５６、光検出器５８、
及び制御回路６０等である。しかし、携帯用又は手のひ
らサイズのバーコードリーダを含む他のタイプのバーコ
ードリーダも使用することができる。
【００３５】レーザ５０は、レーザ・ビームを供給す
る。レーザ・ビームは、ミラー付きの集光面及びレーザ
・ビームを通すための装置を含む光学式トランシーバ５
２を通過する。
【００３６】多角形スピナー５４は、レーザ・ビームを
パターン・ミラー５６のところで方向を変えるミラー付
きの小さな面を含む。パターン・ミラー５６は、複数の
走査線を発生するために、レーザ・ビームの方向を変え
る。
【００３７】バーコードレーザ２８から反射した光は、
パターン・ミラー５６により多角形スピナー５４の方向
を向き、多角形スピナー５４は、光を光学式トランシー
バ５２の方向に向ける。光学式トランシーバ５２の集光
面は、光を光検出器５８の方向に向け、光検出器５８
は、反射光の強度を示す電気信号を発生する。
【００３８】制御回路６０は、アイテム識別情報を決定
するために上記電気信号を解釈する。
【００３９】制御回路６０は、そうしたい場合には、直
列ポート６２を通してＲＦＩＤラベルリーダ３２からア
イテム識別情報又はＲＦＩＤラベル識別情報を入手す
る。このように構成されている場合には、制御回路６０
は、バーコードラベル２８及びＲＦＩＤラベル１４から
端末装置１８に識別情報を送る。
【００４０】図３について説明すると、この図は、スタ
ート９０から始まるアイテム・チェック装置３０の動作
の詳細図である。
【００４１】ステップ９２においては、アイテム・チェ
ック装置３０は、ラベルを読み取るために、アイテム存
在信号を受信するために待機する。
【００４２】バーコードリーダ４６内の制御回路６０
は、アイテム検出回路を備えている場合には、信号を発
生することができる。図２の構成の場合には、制御回路
６０は、直列ポート６２を通して制御回路６８を起動す
ることができる。どんな構成であれ、トランザクション
・ソフトウェア４６は、入力装置２０からのオペレータ
の入力に応じて、両方の制御回路６０及び６８に信号を
供給することができる。
【００４３】ステップ９４においては、制御回路６０
は、バーコードリーダ４６の作動していない任意の構成
部品を作動し、バーコードラベル２８を求めてアイテム
を走査し、制御回路６８は、ＲＦＩＤラベル１４を探し
てラベル確認装置６４を作動する。
【００４４】ステップ９６においては、制御回路６０
は、バーコード情報を探して、アイテムからの反射光を
チェックし、制御回路６０がバーコード情報を検出した
場合には、制御回路６０は、アイテム識別情報を入手す
るために、バーコード情報を復号する。制御回路６８
は、ＲＦＩＤラベル情報が受信済みであるかどうかを判
断する。
【００４５】ステップ９８においては、制御回路６０及
び６８の一方又は両方が、端末装置１８に識別情報を送
る。両方の制御回路６０及び６８からの識別情報は、ア
イテム識別情報であってもよい。
【００４６】別な方法としては、制御回路６８は、それ
により、参照テーブルからアイテム識別情報を入手する
ことができるＲＦＩＤラベル識別情報を送ることができ
る。
【００４７】トランザクション・ソフトウェア３６は、
制御回路６０及び６８の両方がアイテム識別情報を送信
した場合には、これらの制御回路から入手したアイテム
識別情報を比較する。トランザクション・ソフトウェア
３６は、トランザクション・サーバ１６にアイテム識別
情報を含む価格要求を送る。処理はステップ９２に戻
り、他の信号を受信するための待機状態になる。

がら本発明を説明してきたが、本発明の範囲から逸脱す
ることなしに、種々の変更及び修正を行うことができ

Claims (10)

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項１】 バーコードリーダと、 前記バーコードリーダに接続している無線周波数製品ラ
    ベル確認装置と、を備えるアイテム処理装置。
  2. 【請求項２】 前記バーコードリーダがハウジングを含
    み、 前記無線周波数製品ラベル確認装置が前記ハウジング内
    に位置する、請求項１に記載のアイテム処理装置。
  3. 【請求項３】 さらに、 前記ハウジング内に秤を備える、請求項２に記載のアイ
    テム処理装置。
  4. 【請求項４】 バーコードリーダを備え、該バーコード
    リーダが、 バーコードラベルから第１の識別情報を入手するための
    制御回路と、 無線周波数製品ラベルから第２の識別情報を入手するた
    めに、前記制御回路に接続している通信ポートと、を含
    み、さらに、 前記通信ポートに前記第２の識別情報を提供するための
    無線周波数確認装置を備える、アイテム・チェック装
    置。
  5. 【請求項５】 アイテムから第２の識別情報を入手する
    ために、アイテムと無線周波数製品ラベル確認装置から
    第１の識別情報を入手するためのバーコードリーダを含
    むアイテム処理装置を作動するステップと、 前記アイテムがバーコードラベルを持っている場合に、
    前記バーコードリーダにより前記第１の識別情報を入手
    するステップと、 前記アイテムが無線周波数製品ラベルを持っている場合
    に、前記無線周波数製品ラベル確認装置により前記第２
    の識別情報を入手するステップと、の各ステップを含む
    アイテム処理方法。
  6. 【請求項６】 前記アイテム処理装置により前記アイテ
    ムを検出するステップと、 前記アイテム処理装置による前記アイテムの検出に応じ
    て、前記バーコードリーダ及び前記無線周波数製品ラベ
    ル確認装置を作動するステップと、の各ステップを含
    む、請求項５に記載の方法。
  7. 【請求項７】 前記アイテムが前記バーコードラベルと
    前記無線周波数製品ラベルの両方を有している場合に、
    前記第１及び第２の識別情報により前記アイテムを識別
    するステップを含む、請求項５又は６に記載の方法。
  8. 【請求項８】 さらに、 前記第１及び第２の識別情報が、前記アイテムに関連し
    ている場合に、前記アイテムの価格を入手するステップ
    を含む、請求項５乃至７の何れか一項に記載の方法。
  9. 【請求項９】 さらに、 前記第１の識別情報だけを入手した場合に、前記第１の
    識別情報により前記アイテムの価格を入手するステップ
    を含む、請求項５乃至８の何れか一項に記載の方法。
  10. 【請求項１０】 さらに、 前記第１の識別情報だけを入手した場合に、前記第２の
    識別情報により前記アイテムの価格を入手するステップ
