BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Smart cards are well known in the industry as cards with embedded computer chips connected to metal pads on the major surface of the card. These smart cards can be inserted into a smart card reader that makes electrical contact with the pads of the smart card through contacts mounted in the smart card reader housing. Currently, two types of smart card reader connectors are available, a sliding type and a landing type. One example of a sliding type reader is disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 5,334,827 to Bleier et al. In the sliding type reader shown in this patent, a smart card is inserted into the reader and slid over the contacts until the contacts make contact with the pads of the smart card. While the smart card is slid into the reading position, the contacts are spring biased against the smart card. During the insertion and removal cycle, maximum orthogonal force is applied to the smart card, and a wiping action is applied from the leading edge of the card along the main plastic surface and ultimately to the contact pads of the smart card. Affected above. A problem that exists with sliding-type card readers such as disclosed by Brier et al. Is that significant wear occurs due to the strong orthogonal forces applied over long wiping paths during repeated insertion and removal of the card. It is to be. Also, as a result, the leader contact picks up wear powder when the leader contact slides along the surface of the card. This powder adheres to the contact pads of the card, making it more difficult to achieve a reliable electrical connection. Another problem that exists with such a sliding type connector is that undesirable streaks appear on the surface of the surface that has undergone the wiping action, damaging the picture of the wiping path along the plastic surface of the card. One example of a landing-type smart card reader is disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 4,976,630 to Schuder et al. The smart card reading device shown in this patent includes a stationary frame and a contact support member mounted in an opening in the frame for reciprocating movement between a reading position and an initial position. . The movement of the contact support member to the reading position occurs by pushing the smart card into the reader. The return of the support member to the initial position is achieved by a spring that biases the support member to the initial position when the smart card is removed from the reader. Such a configuration is complicated because the contact support member must move in the contact direction and in the opposite direction to land the contact on the contact pad of the smart card. Another example of a landing type smart card reader is disclosed in EP 0 468 828 which shows a smart card reader with a control lever. The control lever is pivotally supported by a support frame. The lever engages the pad when the card is in the reading position and disengages the contact from the card as the card is pulled to the idle position. The movement of the contact is controlled so as to be in the combined state. A pair of coil springs are used to bias the control lever and contacts to the idle position, thereby preventing the contacts from engaging the card. Upon insertion, the card engages the cam surface of the control lever, pivoting the lever and contact toward the card pad and establishing an electrical connection therebetween. The problem that exists with both of these landing-type smart card readers is that they have a complicated actuation mechanism. Both configurations require a separate spring member to drive the contacts and / or control lever. In order to achieve simplification of the landing type smart card reader, it is desirable to reduce the required number of parts. Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a simple configuration for a landing type smart card reader that allows multiple mating cycles without excessive wear of the contacts. DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION The above objects of the present invention are achieved by a smart card reader having a base, a contact support, and a cover. The cover has a profile with a top wall, from which at least one spring arm extends into the card receiving area and engages the contact support, so that the card is in the inserted reading position. Until the contact is reached, the contact support is offset so that the contact is spaced from the smart card pad. A fixing member also extends from the cover and cooperates with a complementary fixing area on the base to fix the cover to the base. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The invention will now be described by way of an embodiment with reference to the accompanying drawings. FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a smart card reader according to the present invention. FIG. 2 is an exploded perspective view of the smart card reader according to the present invention. FIG. 15 is an exploded perspective view of the smart card reader of FIG. 14 viewed from the bottom side. FIG. 16 is a sectional view showing an assembled state of the smart card reader of FIG. A preferred embodiment of the invention Referring first to FIG. 1 illustrating the present invention schematically. The smart card reader 10 has a configuration including an insulating base 14, a cover 12 attached to the base 14, and a contact 18 also attached to the base 14. An opening 24 is formed along the first end surface 26 for receiving a smart card into the card receiving area 30 (FIG. 2). The cover 12 has a configuration including a fixing protrusion 16 for coupling to the base 14 and an optional board lock 17 for fixing the smart card reader 10 to a printed circuit board (not shown). A spring arm 22 is formed on the cover 12 and extends into the card receiving area 30. A switch actuator 20 is also formed on cover 12 and extends into card receiving area 30 as well. Each of the main components is shown in detail in FIGS. The base 14 has a contour along a first end surface 26 with a guide 25 leading into a card receiving area 30. A contact fixing passage 44 is provided near each of the first end face 26 and the second end face 27. A plurality of grooves 36 extend from the corresponding contact fixing passages 44 to the center of the support receiving area 40, respectively. The support accommodating region 40 has a central portion and two side portions and is formed substantially in an H shape. Each side terminates in a first end surface 26, where a hinge bar 42 extends between the side walls of each side. A switch housing area 38 is provided along the second end face 27 and communicates with an actuator housing area 46 also arranged along the second end face 27. A micro switch 100 is provided in the switch housing area 38. The microswitch 100 has a contact piece extending from the switch housing area 38 to the printed circuit board. A fixing member receiving area 34 is provided along the side wall 32 of the housing, and a positioning projection 35 for correctly positioning the insulating housing 14 on the printed circuit board is provided on the bottom surface of the housing 14. Referring again to FIG. 2, there is shown a substantially H-shaped support 50 having a center arm 52 to which two side arms 54 are connected. The center arm 52 has a contour with a plurality of contact receiving grooves 56 along the bottom surface. Each side arm 54 has a hinge portion 58 at one free end and an actuation pad 60 at the opposite free end. Here, the contact 18 will be described in detail again with reference to FIG. Each contact 18 includes a leg 62 for attaching to a printed circuit board, a fixing portion 64, and a cantilever arm 66 extending substantially at a right angle from the fixing portion 64. The cantilever arm 66 has a contour with a contact portion 68 and a tab 70 at its opposite free end. The cantilever arm 66 is bent in advance and applies a force to the contact receiving groove 56. Here, the cover 12 will be described in detail with reference to FIGS. The cover 12 is substantially planar and has a top wall 13 on which all the features to be described are formed. The spring arm 22 is stamped from the top wall 13 and has a profile with a body 76 slightly bent toward the card receiving area 30. An intermediate portion 78 extends from body portion 76 and is bent again from body portion 76 toward card receiving area 30. Finally, a free end 80 extends from the intermediate portion 78 and is bent back toward the top wall 13 so as to be substantially parallel to the body 76. The switch actuator 20 is also formed by punching from the top wall 13 and has a first arm 82 extending from the top wall 13 and a second arm 84 extending substantially perpendicular to the first arm 82. A guide portion 86 is bent from the second arm 84, and an operation protrusion 88 is also provided along the bottom surface of the second arm 84. A plurality of depressions 72 are also formed in the top wall 13, and serve to firmly press the inserted card against the contact 18. The fixing projection 16 is bent from both side edges 19. Each fixing protrusion 16 has an extension arm 16a extending from the top wall 13, and a fixed arm 16b is formed at a free end of the extension arm 16a. An optional guide surface 89 for guiding a card to the card receiving area 30 may be provided along the first edge 90. An optional boardlock 17, also stamped and formed from the cover top wall 13, is shown extending below the locking lugs 16 and cooperating with the boardlock holes in the printed circuit board. An advantage of this board lock configuration is that the board lock 17 is provided from the front to the rear in the card insertion direction and resists a strong card fitting force. An additional advantage of this arrangement is that protection against electrostatic discharge can be provided by soldering the board lock 17 to the ground circuit of the printed circuit board. Here, the fitting cycle will be described in detail with reference to FIGS. Referring first to FIG. 5, the smart card reader 10 is shown in an idle position prior to the insertion of the smart card 102. It should be noted at this point that the spring arms 22 are in a position where their free ends 80 have engaged the actuation pads 60 of the support 50 (FIG. 6). Therefore, the support 50 and the contact 18 are biased downward so that the contact portion 68 does not engage with the lower surface of the inserted card 102. When the card 102 is inserted, the card first engages the intermediate portion 78 of the spring arm 22. When the card 102 is further inserted, the card 102 presses the spring arm 22 and separates from the support 50, and the contact 18 naturally rebounds toward the card 102, so that the support 50 moves to the movement of the spring arm 22. Follow (FIG. 7). As the card 102 is further pushed into the card receiving area 30, the spring arm 22 continues to move upward until the contact 68 engages the pad of the card 102. A wiping action occurs while the card 102 moves from the position of FIG. 7 to the position of FIG. FIG. 8 shows a state where the card 102 is completely inserted into the reading position. 9 to 11, the operation of the switch actuator 20 is shown in detail. FIG. 9 shows a state in which the switch actuator 20 is in a loose idle position away from the microswitch 100. When the card 102 is inserted into the card receiving area 30, the card 102 first engages the spring arm 22 as described above, and then engages the guide surface 86 of the switch actuator 20 (FIG. 9). When the card 102 is further pushed into the card receiving area 30, the card 102 pushes the second arm 84 until the projection 88 contacts the microswitch 100 (FIG. 11). The time when the microswitch 100 is actuated is defined as a reading position (FIG. 11). The microswitch 100 is configured to detect when the card 102 is in the reading position to activate circuitry on the printed circuit board that reads the inserted card 102. When the card 102 is removed, all of the movable parts perform the operation of sequentially returning from FIG. 11 to FIG. It should be noted that the spring arm 22 has a tendency for the spring arm 22 to apply a light pushing force to the card 102 when the spring arm 22 is withdrawn because the intermediate portion 78 has an inclined relationship with the card 102. is there. The advantage of this embodiment is that the contact 18 can be moved from the idle position (FIG. 5) to the reading position (FIG. 5) where the card is fully inserted using simple features formed on the cover 12 to actuate the support 50. 8) is provided with a simplified structure for pivoting. Another embodiment is shown in FIGS. Referring to FIG. 12, the base 314 is configured to include fewer contacts 318 and a substantially U-shaped contact support 350. It should be noted that this arrangement does not require the stamping of any feature on the cover, not shown, to simplify the drawing. The base 314 includes a board lock 335 and a similar card receiving area 330. The contact accommodating grooves 336 are provided near the respective end faces 326 and 327 and extend inward toward the support 350. The support 350 has a contour with hinge projections 358 that extend from opposite sides into corresponding grooves 342 in the base 314. Cam surfaces 321 are formed at both free ends of the support 350, and a switch actuator 320 is similarly provided at one free end. In this embodiment, the contact 318 has a spring force that urges the support 350 away from the card receiving area 330, as opposed to the contact of the first embodiment. When the smart card 102 is inserted, the card 102 is not engaged until the card 102 first engages the cam surface 321 to pivot the support 350 and contacts 318 upwardly toward the pads of the smart card 102. Passes above contact 318. The switch actuator 320 simultaneously rotates and pushes down the microswitch 100 to indicate the reading position. An advantage of this embodiment is that it has a simplified configuration of supports and contacts, which does not require the formation of special features on the cover 12. In addition, this arrangement does not require a spring because the contact is formed to rebound spontaneously away from the card. Still another embodiment is shown in FIGS. Referring first to FIGS. 14 and 15, it can be seen that the cover 412 is substantially similar to the cover 12 except that it does not include a switch actuator. Base 414 is substantially similar to base 14 except that switch housing area 438 has been modified (FIG. 15). The switch housing area 438 is open on the bottom surface of the base 414, as shown in FIG. A hole 440 is formed in the switch housing area 438, and the hole 440 has a size for housing the actuator 420. Preferably, hole 440 conforms to the shape of the actuator at its taper 441 to confine actuator 420. A locking projection 410 protrudes from one side of the switch housing area 438, and a latch projection 411 protrudes from the opposite side of the switch housing area 438. A groove 415 for receiving the contact piece 103 of the switch 100 extends from the switch receiving area 438. The switch 100 has an outline with a pair of tabs 105 protruding from the opposite end faces and a contact piece 103 for attaching to a printed circuit board (not shown). The button 104 (FIG. 14) that forms the contact surface is biased outward from the switch 100. When the button 104 is depressed, the switch 100 is operated, and when the button 104 is released, the switch 100 returns to the original one-sided position. The actuator 420 is spherical and is located above the button 104, as best shown in FIG. When the switch 100 is mounted on the base 414, the actuator or ball 420 is trapped between the button 104 and the tapered portion 441 of the hole 440. Actuator 420 has a profile that partially protrudes from hole 440 during assembly (FIG. 16). Note that although the actuator 420 is preferably confined between the taper 441 and the button, the actuator 420 may be trapped between the cover and the button without the taper 441. Should. The shape of the actuator 420 is preferably a ball, because the actuator 420 has a curved surface for engaging the card 102 inserted into the card receiving area 30. However, it should be noted that other shapes can be used as the actuator 420 as long as the actuator has a guide surface that engages the card 102 and an activation surface that activates the switch 100. . Here, the operation of the switch 100 will be described in detail with reference to FIG. When the card 102 is inserted into the card receiving area 30, the card 102 engages the aforementioned spring arm and then engages the actuator 420. When the card 102 is further pushed into the card receiving area 30, the card 102 causes the actuator 420 to press the button 104. When the card 102 is removed, the button 104 pushes the actuator 420 to return to the original position shown in FIG. An advantage of this embodiment is that it has a simple actuation mechanism that does not require an actuator to be formed on the cover 412. Although the above has been described with reference to the embodiments, various modifications within the spirit of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art. For example, the configuration of each embodiment may be combined with the configuration of another embodiment. Further, the above embodiments have been described with reference to a smart card, but the present invention is not limited to such a card. Therefore, it is to be understood that the invention is limited only by the appended claims.
