The friction material of various vehicles such as automobiles, such as a brake lining material, exhibits a high degree of homogeneity throughout the friction material so that the friction characteristics do not change depending on the contact position of the friction system. Although it is desirable, according to the study of the present inventor, in the fibrous base material such as a fibrous magnesium compound or a spherical zonotlite known hitherto, the fiber length of the fibrous base material is long or relatively bulky. It has been found that due to the structure, the dispersibility in the friction material is insufficient, which tends to reduce the homogeneity. Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide a sheet-like friction material having a high degree of homogeneity and a friction material composition which can be advantageously used for producing a sheet-like friction material having a high degree of homogeneity.

[0010] The friction material composition of the present invention is a composition mainly composed of a fiber base material, a friction modifier and a binder similarly to a normal friction material composition. The main feature is that a known fiber base having a long fiber length and a fibrous zonotolite having a very short fiber length are used in combination.

As an example of the fibrous zonotolite having a very short fiber length used in the friction material composition of the present invention, there is Zonoheige (registered trademark), which is a synthetic fibrous zonotolite sold by Ube Materials Co., Ltd. be able to. This Zonoheidi has an average fiber length of 1 to 5
μm, average fiber diameter is 0.1 to 0.5 μm, average aspect ratio is 10 to 20, whiteness is 93 or more, and specific surface area is 20

Hereinafter, the pH is about 9.8, and the decomposition temperature is 680-70.
It is an inorganic fiber material having high heat resistance at 0 ° C. and high dispersibility in a resin material. Moreover, the synthetic fibrous zonotolite is further divided into small pieces when kneaded and dispersed in the resin, and each of the fiber length and the fiber diameter becomes about 1/3 to 1/20 before kneading and dispersing. Since such fine fibers are highly dispersed in the composition, a friction material molded article having high homogeneity can be obtained.
