所定の空間内を移動する人間を検出する移動物体検出装置として、物体から放射される赤外線を検出する受動型赤外線検出装置が多用されている。この装置は、一つの焦電型赤外線検出素子に、凹面鏡やフレネルレンズ等の光学系により複数の方向からの赤外線エネルギーを集束し、その焦電型赤外線検出素子から得られる検出信号をもとに、移動物体の存在の有無を判定するものである。
従来より、広い範囲を一台の装置によりカバーするために、複数の焦電型赤外線検出素子、光学系及び信号処理系統を備えたものも実用化されている。焦電型赤外線検出素子と光学系及び信号処理系統を一つの検出ユニットととらえたとき、そのような検出ユニットを複数個内蔵した移動物体検出装置は存在していたが、それらの検出ユニットがカバーする検知範囲は、装置全体の検知範囲を拡大するという目的から、相互に重複しない形態を基本としており、それぞれの検出ユニットから得られる検出信号が所定の検知レベルを超えるかどうかを個々に判定して、どれかひとつでも所定の検知レベルを超えた検出ユニットがあれば、ただちに移動物体有りという検知信号を出力するよう構成されていた。
