Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To impart uniform alignment to a liquid crystal up to the end part of a liquid crystal display device and to maintain uniform display characteristics all over the screen by forming a dummy part outside a display part and forming a laminated body consisting of an electrode at the same surface level as that of the display part, dummy color filters and an alignment controlling film. SOLUTION: The right three pixel electrodes 4 in the figure are used as dummy pixels, and the TFT element connected to each pixel electrode is in contact with the scanning line and display line, but the scanning line or display line is not connected to the driving circuit so that only the dummy pixels are electrically insulated. The right three color filters 27 facing the above-mentioned electrodes are used as dummy color filters. A light-shielding part disposed to completely cover the dummy color filters is formed wider than the dummy part, and the opening of the light-shielding part forms the display part. By surrounding the display part with the dummy part, same alignment property can be obtd. in the both ends of the screen as that of the center region, and therefore, a sharper image can be obtd.

2. Description of the Related Art In recent years, the characteristics required for a liquid crystal display device have become more severe, and the image quality is required to be at the same level as that of a normal CRT screen. In a liquid crystal display device, controlling the orientation of the used liquid crystal is a major factor that affects the quality of a display image, and it is necessary to uniformly orient the liquid crystal in any part of the display unit. Generally, an alignment control film is provided on a liquid crystal surface to control the alignment of the liquid crystal.

When there is a step on the surface of the alignment control film, the orientation of the liquid crystal changes at the step and becomes non-uniform. When color display is performed by a liquid crystal display device, any one of red (R), green (G), and blue (B) color filters is attached to the substrate on the counter electrode side for each pixel. Has a step because there is no adjacent filter.

In the present invention, preferably, the dummy section has the same structure as the display section, that is, forms a dummy pixel having a wiring, a switching element, a pixel electrode and the like, and each pixel electrode is electrically connected so that no voltage is applied. Keep it insulated. When the same step shape is formed by forming the dummy pixels in this way, the manufacturing process of each pixel of the display section may be expanded as it is, and the manufacturing is easy because an extra process is unnecessary.

The electrically insulated state is not particularly limited, and may be appropriately selected according to the manufacturing process. For example, in the case where the switching element is a transistor, the switching element can be insulated by leaving no contact with the scanning line and the display line. In addition, if the wiring is partially disconnected or the end is not connected to the drive circuit, the wiring is kept in an insulated state.

Further, by providing a light shielding portion in the same region as the dummy portion, the dummy portion is completely blackened and the screen is tightened. Furthermore, the boundary end surface between the dummy part and the display part is provided below the light-shielding part, and the display part is defined by the opening of the light-shielding part, so that the alignment of the dummy part is facilitated, and a reduction in yield due to poor alignment is prevented. can do.
